As judged by the number of voters and votes cast, the popularity of this event continues to boom. This year, over 4500 voters cast over 82,000 votes during the two rounds of voting. And, as we debuted last year, the “red carpet” awards presentation has become a “must do” on the area’s events calendar. Last year, over 375 people attended the gala, complete with celebrity presenters, held at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. Ticket sales so far this year are even more brisk. In an area that rightly prides itself on history, natural beauty and inclusiveness, these awards honor both generations-old businesses and newcomers just starting out. Best Of winners range from all areas of the county, to various age and demographic groups and include public officials, private citizens and natural beauty in the way of parks and historical sites. I’m proud to lead the largest media entity in Columbia County and grateful to work with so many talented people on our staff at C-GM, as well as collaborating with the friendly, professional staff at the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce. This event wouldn’t be possible without all of their efforts. Whenever there is an award/competitive situation, there is a tendency to think in terms of winners and losers, but in this case, nothing could be further from the truth. All nominees have already proven their value by being considered for these awards. In the following pages, we celebrate all the best in this wonderful county. Businesses agree: Receiving a Best of Columbia County award is more than an ego boost. In 2017, 84 local businesses were given a Best Of award after two competitive rounds of voting by visitors and residents alike. This year, 90 more establishments will be added to the Best Of list, but last year’s winners are still seeing the benefits of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and Columbia-Greene Media accolade. Derek Grout, the owner of Harvest Spirits, 3074 Route 9, Valatie, was pleased to receive the Best Distillery in Columbia County award last year. Harvest Spirits has produced some of the best spirits in the Hudson Valley for over a decade, Grout said. “Winning the [Best Of] award really helps our business,” Grout said. “It helps us connect to our customers. come in and see this right next to our spirits, we think it really helps sell our bottles and people connect with our brand.” Tom Crowell, one of the co-owners of Chatham Brewing, 59 Main St., Chatham, said the business was privileged to be named the Best Brewery in Columbia County last year, as well as for the past several years. When Chatham Brewing first won a Best Of award, it was the only brewery in the county, Crowell said. “And now, we’ve been joined by several others, so we really appreciate the local support to be named the best,” he added. “When we started here on Main Street, it was the locals here who supported our business and helped us grow. Columbia County is our strongest market and it really helps our recognition to be named the best brewery in Columbia County.” Jada Kitson contributed to this story
