FRANKIE BALLARD:

Ballard says. [When I was a kid], “records were playing in every part of my house… even the garage.” His Dad’s favorites became his, too. “I loved Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis.” Today he calls them the Holy Trinity of country rock. Ballard knows his stuff. Album #2, Sunshine and Whiskey was recorded at Muscle Shoals Recording Studio in Alabama. Known for the work of legends including Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Levon Helm and the Rolling Stones, his close affiliation with Bob Seger (again, as an opening act) got him in the door. Ballard’s most recent album, El Rio (named one of the 25 best country albums of 2016 - Rolling Stone) was recorded at the famed Sonic Ranch just south of El Paso. Known for its collection of over 55 vintage and modern guitars as well as top end vintage recording equipment, Ballard lived there throughout the recording process for this third album. “There’s rock & roll. There’s country stories and country lyrics and country songs,” he says. “And there’s a lot of blues swagger and blues guitar playing. It’s all those things together. It’s just my own brand of American music.” The 179th Columbia County Fair, Route 66 (GPS: 182 Hudson Avenue), Chatham, NY, opens on Wednesday, August 28th at noon and runs through Monday, Labor Day, Sept 2nd. Admission includes all entertainment and parking. Daily hours are Wednesday: noon to 11PM, Thursday – Monday 10AM – 11PM. Daily admission is $10.00. Sunday, $15.00. Children 12 and under are always free. Thursday, seniors can enter for half price until 4PM and youth under 18 are free until 4PM. Discounted advance sale ticket information is at www.columbiafair. com or call 518. 392.2121.

rock singer and songwriter. By 2013, Ballard’s second album, Sunshine & Whiskey won him 3 gold records – “Helluva Life”, “Sunshine & Whiskey” and “Young & Crazy”. –Not a bad trifecta.

Moriah Formica

Stop by our booth on Austerlitz Place for a prize!

At the age of 16, Albany, NY native Moriah Formica decided that she was ready to put her talents on the biggest stage that a teenager could dare to step on. She auditioned for NBC’s “The Voice”, leaving fans around the world (and four judges with very successful careers) awestruck by her booming, declarative rendition of Heart’s “Crazy On You.” 2019 marks a pivotal moment in Moriah’s mission. Once an eager 7 year old drawn to the swagger and emotion of rock music, the now 18 year old Formica yearns to make the kind of music that inspired her all those years ago; all while forging a sound that speaks to both the new generation and the ones before it. Her resume now equipped with accolades and live shows accompanied by the likes of Joan Jett, Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Michael Sweet (Stryper) and Maria Brink (In This Moment) just to name a few. There’s no gimmick to this overnight sensation, regardless of what the critics might say. The formula is simple: show up, rock out, and leave the whole world asking, “who was that?”

THE DEMOLITION DERBY:

White Doors, White Knuckles

All the fun of road rage and none of the consequences. The Demolition Derby literally brings brave men and women together behind the wheels of expendable vehicles. The object is to hit your opponents so hard that their cars stop running. Last man or woman still able to drive, wins.

“It’s fun. It’s a real adrenaline rush,” says Samantha McMurray, a demolition derby driver. “It’s a sport that never seems to lose interest by drivers or the people in the stands,” says Assistant Fair Manager, John Craft. “Drivers need to make contact with a live automobile every 60 seconds,” says Frank Roberts, owner of the management company Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby. Now’s the time for aspiring drivers to head over to www.ColumbiaFair.com and download applications for the 4, 6 or 8 cylinder competitions as well as those for mini-vans/light trucks and full size vans/pick-ups. The competitions take place Wednesday and Thursday evenings of Columbia County

26

Fair Week in Chatham, Aug. 28th thru Labor Day, Sept. 2nd, beginning at 6:30PM. Drivers start by hunting up a car that mixes durability with expendability. One that is easy to strip down but sturdy enough to withstand some serious impact. All chrome and glass must be removed. All seats except the driver’s must be removed. Airbags must be removed. The windshield must be removed. You get the idea - - just the basics. The driver’s side door must be painted white so that an assigned number will be clearly visible to Derby officials and the commentator. Tires must be stock sizes and no alterations can be made to the engine or frame with the exception of driver side door 2019 COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR

reinforcement. And only 5 gallons of gas will be allowed in gas tanks. Every precaution is put in place to make a screaming, crashing, smoking, smashing competition as safe as possible. The entry fee per vehicle is $30.00 but only a limited number of slots for each heat are available. Last minute entries – the day of – will only be accepted if there is still room in that class. There is an additional $10.00 late fee for each entry. Altogether, the Derby features a total cash purse of $1,400. thanks, in part, to sponsors HudsonValley360. com, Madsen Overhead doors and W&B Golf Carts, Inc. To make things even more interesting, drivers are encouraged to “decorate” Columbia-Greene Media

their vehicles. A theme for each evening has been selected and the most imaginative entry (even if no longer mobile) will be recognized with a prize. Wednesday evening, Aug. 28th, the theme is SMALL FOOT (an animated movie). Wednesday includes 4 cylinder, mini-van, mini pick-ups and mini SUV heats. Thursday, the 29th, drivers can emphasize the bizarre with a TWILIGHT ZONE theme. Thursday’s competitions include 6 cylinder/ 8 cylinder cars and full-size pick-ups and vans. “This is among our most popular attractions,” Craft said. “Families come to cheer on their sons and daughters and a high percentage of the drivers live within 20 miles of the Fairgrounds. Even more live in the upstate region. There is a lot of local interest.” under 18 are free until 4PM. Discounted advance sale ticket information is at www.columbiafair.com or call 518.392.2121. 2019 COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR 27

Along with the hurdy-gurdy sound of the carousel, judges describing the winning traits of a well-configured calf, popcorn popping and the constant background of Fairgoers talking and laughing, there is another sound that can lure folks on the Fairground – music.

Real wood. Redefined

Whether a dance band combo, duo or single player, there is always some appealing music being offered up for ticketholders. At the Columbia County Fair in Chatham, those musicians are carefully selected from both local musicians and those who are “imported”. They may not live just up the road, but they have wide appeal and are a pleasure to listen to.

Columbia County Fair:

COME FOR THE EXHIBITS, STAY FOR THE MUSIC

Jamaican born Jimy Graham (Yup, that’s the correct spelling.) will be among the musicians featured at this year’s Columbia County Fair in Chatham, NY. Jimy is heavy into Motown and the currently trending sounds of the Caribbean. Among others he’s recorded and/or toured with Wilson Pickett, Peter Tosh and Grace Jones. The guitarist is just one of several live musical performers appearing free with admission every day at the Fair.

Performances are featured every day throughout the fairgrounds and are free with admission. 28

LIFESPAN® SOLID SELECT BEVEL SIDING is a premium solid primed bevel siding – offering superior clean finish, outstanding performance, and the benefits of real wood.

In the local category is Jarrod, a band that has recently reunited and will bring their classic rock and country back to the Fair for the second time. Also local is Grit ‘n’ Whiskey, a Saratoga Springs 6-piece band that plays modern country. Known for their strong vocals, high-energy and danceable music, they cover Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean and many more. The Reverberators, from Albany, are fans of 60s and 70s music and play the Beatles, the Byrds, Creedence and the Eagles. They describe their music as “a little blues, ballads and rockabilly.” Side Show Willie hails from Chatham and plays classic rock and dance music. And the duo ofAllen & Azzaam includes standards and even some jazz. Between the saxophonist and the pianist, they’ve performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Joel and Lou Rawls. Also on the list is a Sunday afternoon performance by The Voice and American Idol competitor Moriah Formica, a Latham native, and Sunday night’s featured singer – triple platinum performer, straight from Nashville, Frankie Ballard. Performances are featured every day throughout the fairgrounds and are free with admission. With such a cross section of musical genres, performers and styles, fairgoers can find the perfect group to sing along with, or clap to, and dance to. There’s something for everyone. “Last year 11 acts went on to the State Fair,” said Talent Coordinator Betsy Braley. “They all placed – even though the competition is really stiff, and all of the 11 acts ranked in the top ten of their age group.” Competitors from all around New York State converge in Syracuse – all bringing their ”A” game. It’s a platform for those who want to move ahead in the entertainment industry and one of the reasons that local talent shows, like Columbia County’s Got Talent, draw such high level performers. Those wishing to compete this year, must fill out entry forms and either mail them or deliver them in person to the Fair office next to the North Gate Stage on Route 66 in Chatham by August 20th. There is no entry fee. For all information, go to https://www. columbiafair.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/DEPT20A-Talent-Show.pdf. Columbia County’s Got

PLENTY of Talent

Right now, all over the county, optimistic individuals are practicing their skills in anticipation of the upcoming Columbia County Fair. The talent competition, with prize money totaling $225.00 in each division, draws out plenty of individuals eager to put their special talents on display. From singing and dancing to more unique skills. One year, a contestant solved a series of Rubik’s cubes in 90-seconds. Then there’s Walter Hughes, a vaudevillian who has competed every year in the adult division. He’s ninety-years-old. Columbia County’s Got Talent is a Fair competition sponsored by the Kneller Agency. It takes place beginning at noon on Wednesday, August 28th. Contestants will be advised of their time slot. Then, the top 6 Division finalists will compete again in the Talent Contest Finals at 7:00PM on Wednesday evening. Schoolgirl Queen Contestants are more than just PRETTY FACES CHATHAM – Contestants for the 2019 Schoolgirl Queen Contest at the Columbia County Fair have wide-ranging interests. From training in Brazilian Jiu-jitzu to membership in a Multi-cultural Club, Taekwondo expertise to playing the saxophone, volunteering as a student director of a musical to helping format an Art and Literary Magazine, they are a diverse bunch. The contest is an annual event and takes place on Friday evening, August 30th as part of the Columbia County Fair in Chatham. For the second year, it will be held at the Northgate Stage beginning at 6:30. Each high school in the county is represented by one of the 6 junior classmates. Judging, by three non-local individuals, is based on personality, poise and appearance. Muriel Faxon, Co-director of the event, says the girls meet with the MC prior to the event and discuss questions that may be asked of them but their extemporaneous responses take place live in front of the Fair audience. The winner receives $500 in prize money, all others receive $300 each. The reigning queen, 2018’s Brook McComb from Spencertown, officiates and crowns her successor. Then the newly designated Queen participates in the Fair Parade that takes place the following day. The event is sponsored by the C-GCC Dean of Students.

Miss Germantown Maria Krein — A National Honor Society member, Maria works backstage on her high school productions. She is interested in journalism and college drawing. When not studying, Maria works to advance her 2nd degree black belt standing in Taekwondo. Other hobbies include video editing, photography and volunteering at her church.

At John Deere, we’re into much more than just the “commercial mowing” business. Quite frankly, we’re in the commercial “growing” business, helping professional landscapers with a wide variety of products and services. Yes, we do have a full-lineup of commercial mowing equipment. But we also have commercial compact equipment like skid steers and backhoe loaders for worksite construction. Our Gator™ utility vehicles are at home on any jobsite. And our compact utility tractors have the easy-to-attach implements to handle just about any task. All with an inhouse financing company named John Deere Financial.

Sierra Shelton — Music figures strongly in Sierra’s extra-curricular activities, from All County Chorus to All County Jazz. She has participated in High School musical productions, too, and taught children to dance as part of her dance studio work. Sierra was 1 Sierra Shelto of 3 volunteer student directors Taconic Hills Hi n gh School for a Middle School musical.
