177 COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR! TH

Thousands of families will converge on the Chatham Fairgrounds Wednesday, August 30, through Labor Day, September 4, to celebrate the county’s agricultural heritage, reconnect with friends and neighbors, and enjoy over 200 exhibits, shows, contests, amusement rides and attractions.

Presented by the not-for-profit Columbia County Agricultural Society for the past 176 years, the Columbia County Fair is firmly rooted in the area’s farming community, but offers all the variety, excitement and family fun of a contemporary county fair. Headlining an extensive lineup of live entertainment is country music legend Travis Tritt, who performs Sunday, September 3, at 7 p.m. at the grandstand. Brand new acts will entertain fairgoers at the North Gate Stage, including Variety Extreme, the Kenya Safari Acrobats, and mentalist and comedy hypnosis shows by Terrance B. Also new to the fair is the Cincinnati Circus, performing Friday night at the grandstand. The 80th annual Schoolgirl Queen pageant is Friday, September 1, and the 66th annual Firefighters Parade Columbia-Greene Media

At the Columbia County Fair, anyone can learn how to milk a cow.

takes place Saturday, September 2.

The focus of this year’s Bounty Cooking Contest is holiday cookies, with amateur chefs using local ingredients to compete for $1,500 in prizes. Columbia County’s own Nancy Fuller, host of Food Network’s hit show “Farmhouse Rules,” is once again coordinating.

Headlining an extensive lineup of live entertainment is country music legend TRAVIS TRITT, who performs Sunday, September 3, at 7 p.m. at the grandstand. Also returning to the Fair are the Eudora Farms petting zoo, the “Columbia County’s Got Talent” contest, two nights of Demolition Derby, the Monster Tractor Pull, the Painted Pony Rodeo, and the Pig Races.

Also returning to the Fair are the Eudora Farms petting zoo, the “Columbia County’s Got Talent” contest, two nights of Demolition Derby, the Monster Tractor Pull, the Painted Pony Rodeo, and the Pig Races.

the Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts. Tritt won the Top New Male Artist award from Billboard and the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award. Two years after his debut in 1989, his album “It’s All About to Change” was released, rocketing the singer to stardom when the album shipped 3 million copies and all four of its singles reached the top five on the country music charts. Along with his first album, this release earned triple-platinum status. The singer’s lack of a cowboy hat and musical aggressiveness set him apart, building a devoted fan base that continues to fill venues coast-to-coast. The next series of albums, seven of which are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America, scored Tritt more hit singles and led him to garner more than 25 million in career album sales, two Grammys and four CMA Awards. Tritt received two Grammy Awards, both for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 1992 for “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’,” a duet with Marty Stuart, and again in 1998 for “Same Old Train,” a collaboration with Stuart and nine other artists. He has performed at the 1996 Olympics, two Super Bowls, a World Series Game, the opening of the Georgia Dome, the final Braves game at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and the NCAA men’s basketball championship. In 2012, Tritt formed his own label, Post Oak Recordings, and released his album, “The Calm After.”

A ‘Perfect Country Music Performer’ Here’s how National Rock Review described Travis Tritt’s performance at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, in May of this year: “It was Travis Tritt in his all black get-up, who rode in and robbed Stagecoach. The veteran performer and certified platinum artist knows how to sell country music with hit after hit of superior, generous, stadium-like showmanship. “I Wanna Be Somebody,” “Here’s a Quarter,” “and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” are only a small portion of his vast buffet of titles he served up. “He never stops smiling and that energy is contagious all the way through the crowd. Tritt has filled the Palomino with euphoric, happy people, including some of the other acts that performed that day. Demolition Derby

Dust will fly and cheers will rise as two nights of Demolition Derby, a Championship Rodeo, and a Monster Tractor Pull competition take to the track in front of the grandstand at this year’s Columbia County Fair. 20

Monster Tractors

The Monster Tractor Pull will be presented Saturday, September 2, at 4 p.m., one of 22 events on the summer-long 2017 New York Tractor Pullers Association schedule.

Rip-roaring 10-ton rigs with names like “Cornfield Cadillac,” “Udder Obsession,” and “Rotten Mean & Nasty” will compete in the Super Stock Tractor, Modified Tractor, and Two-Wheel Drive Truck, and Super Farm Tractor divisions. Attendees are urged to bring earplugs – it’s that loud!

Based in Harriman, Tennessee, Stoney Roberts Promotions is considered “the original automobile demolition derby company,” staging derbies all over the United States. “It’s great to be working with Stoney Roberts again after all of these years,” said John Craft, the fair’s Entertainment Committee Chairman. “The Demo Derby is a big draw and Stoney Roberts puts on a top-notch event that spectators and drivers really enjoy.”

Painted Pony Rodeo

Back by popular demand, the Painted Pony Rodeo features bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, and bull-riding.

Participants must be at least 18, have a valid driver’s license, supply their own vehicle and comply with safety rules. Drivers can enter in four-cylinder, six-cylinder, eight-cylinder cars, full-size trucks and vans, mini-van, mini-pick-ups and mini-SUV classes. Specialty veColumbia-Greene Media

hicle heats are offered both nights of the Demo Derby. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded.

What started out many years ago with farmers bringing their favorite tractors out of the fields to the local fair to compete for bragging rights by pulling a stone boat the farthest has evolved into the heaviest motorsport in the world.

More than $1,400 in cash prizes and trophies will be awarded each night to this year’s winners of the 2017 Columbia County Fair Demolition Derby as the much-anticipated two-night fair favorite returns under the management of Stoney Roberts Promotions, Inc. after a 25-year hiatus. Two nights of Demo Derby action roar into the grandstand on opening day, Wednesday Aug. 30 and Thursday, Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m.

2017 COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR

“It’s great to be working with Stoney Roberts again after all of these years. The Demo Derby is a big draw and Stoney Roberts puts on a top-notch event that spectators and drivers really enjoy.”

Sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the spectacle will take place Monday, September 4, starting at 5 p.m. in front of the grandstand. Columbia-Greene Media

‘Faces of the Fair’ Continue to Star in Advertising and Promotion

For the second straight year, “Faces of the Fair” is the theme of the 2017 Columbia County Fair, with portraits of fairgoers featured in billboards, brochures, print ads and other promotional materials. Celebrating diversity, individuality, togetherness, and love for the fair, the theme flows from the camera lens of professional photographer and “people watcher” Jamie Hankin of Kinderhook. He and his wife Laura have attended the fair for more than 30 years, and were always fascinated with the range of people they would see. Jamie began envisioning a project that would capture these slices of Americana. With the blessing of the Fair Board, he and Laura set up a photo tent at the 2014 fair, snapping more than 600 portraits, free of charge. The stunning results provided images for a “Faces of the Fair” campaign designed by the fair’s graphic designer, Laura Aloisio of 22

Dandelion Designs. Jamie shot more portraits at last year’s fair and is expected to continue on selected days this year. His tent is just inside the Route 203 entrance near the Information Booth. Everyone is invited to drop by and help enlarge the Faces of the Fair mosaic. Hankin is doing the photographs as a project of love, not as a business venture. “To me, the people are what make the fair interesting and exciting, the variety and the individuality and the joy all together,” he said. Hankin has been a professional photographer for nearly 30 years, working in the retail, catalog and fashion industries shooting for clients such as J. Crew, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, and LL Bean. Along the way, he published a book on vintage racecars and a portrait project of Army Rangers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

FAIR INSIDER Lineup for Saturday’s

Firefighters Parade The annual Firefighters Parade, a Columbia County Fair tradition for nearly 65 years, will step off Saturday, September 2, at 11 a.m., with volunteer fire companies, auxiliaries, and musical units from throughout the Hudson Valley participating.

The Sue Wee Pig Races, always a crowd favorite, will take place all six days at the Fair, with multiple races each day.

Something to Crow About

There will be four “Loud Mouth Crowing Contests” during fair week in the poultry barn, leading up to a championship crow-off on Sunday afternoon, time to be posted. Roosters only, please.

Band Concert

One of the most charming experiences of the entire fair is the traditional Labor Day concert by the Ghent Band, this year on Monday, September 4, at 11:30 a.m. at the NorthGate Stage.

Patriotic Salute

If you want to get a lump in your throat, be at the Beer Pavilion a couple hours after the Firefighters Parade on Saturday afternoon when DJ Jack Bogarski plays Lee Greenwood’s “I’m Proud to be An American.”

Rocky II

This year marks the 55th anniversary of a Labor Day 1962 appearance at the fair by New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller. He had also attended in 1958, and would return in 1966 and again in 1970, during his final campaign for Governor, this time riding into the fairgrounds aboard the Ghent Fire Company’s antique pumper.

Father-Daughter Duet

If you haven’t seen the YouTube video of fair headliner Travis Tritt singing a duet of “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t 24

Enough” with his teenage daughter, Tyler Reese, what are you waiting for?

How’s Your Appetite?

The Watermelon Eating Contest is Thursday at 12 noon, while the Ice Cream Eating Contest (product donated by Stewart’s Shops) is Friday at 12 noon, both at the Northgate Stage. Just show up a few minutes early and tell ‘em you want to participate. Trophies will be awarded.

Parade Root

It’s only lasts a few glorious seconds, but Saturday’s Firefighters Parade wouldn’t be complete without former Kinderhook Mayor Bill Van Alstyne’s exuberant sideline cheer for his village fire department as it marches into the fairgrounds.

Parade Route

Don’t sit in the grandstand waiting for the Firefighters Parade. It’s not coming. The parade no longer passes the grandstand. It disperses before then. The place to watch the parade is near the North Gate, the entrance along Route 203 by Stewart’s. Bleachers are set up there.

First Aid

Remember, if someone in your party twists an ankle or gets stung by a bee, the first aid station – staffed by the Chatham Rescue Squad – is situated on the back side of the grandstand, ready to assist.
