The President’s Perspective Holiday Greetings! The Holiday Season is here and with that come thought of the upcoming New Year. As we approach 2019 we’d like to reflect back on some of the Chamber’s activities in 2018. You are currently reading the 3rd edition of our new quarterly publication, “ChamberLink”, which is designed to be a comprehensive business guide for Columbia County Chamber members and the greater community. Inside you will find exclusive content about our chamber including: upcoming events, new initiatives, member profiles, ribbon cuttings and articles about member businesses along with pertinent business information. I would like to take a Jeffrey C. Hunt, CCE, president and moment to thank our media partner ColumCEO, Columbia County Chamber of bia-Greene Media for their support and assisCommerce tance in producing this member content oriented publication. Marketing opportunities in the ChamberLink are available to members at exceptionally cost effective rates, and we are currently working on an enhancement for advertising through the ChamberLink in 2019. Stay Tuned! We also celebrated a record number of ribbon cuttings, business expansions and member milestone anniversaries. In addition we introduced some new membership benefit products including: TASC, a health program that affords sole proprietorships that have a maximum of two employees or 1099 employees an opportunity to realize business expense tax write-offs previously unavailable to them. See January e-newsletter for more details. We also introduced a Chamber travel program that included trips to China and Italy. Our partners, Citslinc and AdventuraWorld, provide the ability to have up close and personal experiences which, really make these trips special. Other destinations are available. Let us know what is on your wish list. More recently the Chamber staff and the Board of Directors just went through a strategic planning retreat where we are planning some amazing things. Thanks to Dick Blouse Jr, former President of the Detroit Regional Chamber and 38 year Chamber veteran and Bob Yingling, a seasoned CIO for AT&T for facilitating the sessions for us. We are working hard to add to the value of your Chamber membership in 2019! Have a Safe & Happy New Year!

December is the month to remember to...
SHOP SMALL AND BUY LOCAL!
This holiday season we encourage you to shop small and buy local. During the last decade many Americans have opted out of shopping in the traditional sense (brick and mortar) or going to the mall and are now increasingly shopping online. The online shopping dynamic has had an adverse effect on shopping malls and main streets. Many economists have differences of opinion regarding the impact of the consumer switching to online shopping. To some economists, online shopping has a direct co-relationship with the closing of malls throughout the United States. No matter who is correct, the benefits for shopping small and buying locally are immense and apparent in Columbia County. Many Chambers’ around the country have begun to focus on this issue and are spreading the word and the importance of staying local. Millions of Americans have heard the call and are actually actively supporting efforts to shop small and buy locally. Our beloved Columbia County is a shining example of how shopping small and buying local can benefit the entire community. From Hudson to Chatham and Hillsdale to Valatie, organizations like Chatham Area Business Alliance (CABA), Hudson
GRAND INVESTOR
Business Coalition (HBCi), Valatie Economic Redevelopment Association (VERA) and Hillsdale Business Alliance (HBA) within our community are committed to the cause of shopping small and buying local. As we look across the spectrum of what is currently happening to big suburban shopping malls our County offers a range of shopping experiences from high end jewelry to locally created crafts. The beauty of supporting locally owned businesses is that money spent within the County often multiplies several times before leaving the local communities. More often than not, money spent locally leads to job creation, sustainable business expansion and growth. So this year, between office parties and family celebrations, please remember to shop small and buy local. If you are interested in learning more about the wonderful array of shopping opportunities in Columbia County, please visit the websites of the aforementioned business organizations or reach out to the Columbia County Chamber directly at www.Columbiachamber

Columbia County Chamber of Commerce
THANK YOU to our MOVE Columbia Investors MOVE Columbia is a County-wide healthy initiative developed by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce in coordination with EP Nevins Insurance Agency, Inc. Blueshield of Northeastern New York, Columbia Memorial Health and Kinderhook Bank are investors in Move Columbia. The committee develops, organizes and facilitates events throughout the county. It is comprised of the Chamber of Commerce employees, Columbia County Department of Health and county business leaders. Columbia County is currently ranked #20 out of 62 counties in a State-wide health ranking system as reported by the Robert Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin. This new healthy initiative is designed to educate, raise awareness, and promote fitness and nutrition, as well as mental wellness to improve the daily lives of our community members. Ultimately, this community Health Initiative is designed to raise our county’s health statistics as collected by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin. In addition, it is our hope and desire to aggregately improve the health of Columbia County residents and to reduce the overall health premiums paid by employers. The partnerships and workplace challenges are excellent ways for your businesses to be involved. Challenges are geared to be inclusive and there is an opportunity for all employees to participate regardless of age, gender or any other differences. Challenges are paired with educational activities
so that there is a greater likelihood of sustainable commitment to whatever activity, healthy choice or exercise chosen by the individual. It has been said, if everyone treated their bodies like the cars they own, people would make better choices as to how they treat their bodies. In 2019, Move Columbia will be involved in numerous organized events to include a Corporate/Community Challenge, various fitness related events and an annual Health & Wellness Fair. Many of these programs will be in partnership with our local health-based businesses throughout Columbia County. This is a great opportunity for local businesses to gain exposure, recruit & retain employees by fostering a positive team environment, engage and educate our youth through the educational partnerships and bring the community together to foster positive relationships and gain success through team-work. For more information, do not hesitate to contact the Chamber at 518-828-4417 or mail@columbiachamber-ny.com.
