Columbia County Chamber of Commerce
We’re All Winners
The 2019 Best of Columbia County awards ceremony has come and gone. The event took place on Thursday, June 27, and was held for the first time at PS21 in Chatham. Now in its seventh year, the Best of was created to celebrate Columbia County’s businesses and people by bringing special attention to them and recognizing the significance of their contributions to the area. Many of us remember the excitement of the first awards, when a big tent was erected outside the Chamber offices on Front Street and you could grab some finger foods on your way to finding a seat in anticipation of the announcements. It was likely the person sitting next to you would be one of the honorees. It was also likely that you knew the person, and knew them well. It’s Columbia County, after all.
I love this quote from Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right.” As the Best of awards come around every year, and as the celebration of them swells, I like to remember that we’re all in the trenches together. Today, and tomorrow, and beyond.
The event has become more than a summer evening of ceremony. Last year’s Best of at the Chatham Fairgrounds sported a red carpet running from the entrance of the main building to the platformed stage, and Masters of Ceremonies including David and Nancy Ginsberg, Melissa Auf Der Maur and Tony Stone, and other local celebrities! The fabulous food was catered by Mara Simons, and local wine and beer were flowing. It was a night out to see and be seen.
For now, here’s what’s happening on the craft beverage scene in Columbia County that makes us all winners every day, every season, every year.
The beautiful amphitheater at PS21 has taken the event to another level. Plenty of comfortable seating with great views from every seat will make it more pleasant to watch and linger. The stage will really showcase the winners. As the event has become more of an event, and as all of us who get nominated in the extensive category selection find more ways to encourage our customers and fans to vote for us, the more competitive it feels. For a business, competition can challenge you to raise your game in ways you wouldn’t have considered unless you needed to. It can be exciting and engaging. It can also tip the scales on what may already be a struggle to keep going. Your perceived competition may seem to be always getting out in front of you and your business in ways that leave you depleted and frustrated.
Chamber Link n
It’s summertime in our beautiful county, and it’s a great place to be. I own a craft beverage business – the Hudson-Chatham Winer - and yes, we’re up for an award, and yes, of course I hope we win. And at the time I’m writing this and up to the moment the winner is announced, I’m on pins and needles and listening to the angel and the devil on my shoulders duke it out: “You’re fine,” says the angel. “Not this time,” says the devil. Like all of us in this arena, we’ll find out in a few weeks.
Chatham Brewing, the County’s first craft brewery, is thriving on Main Street. Open six days a week, you can enjoy all their beers on tap there, get great food, play trivia on Thursday nights, and hear live music on the weekends. Harvest Spirits was Columbia County’s first distillery and is still making exceptional product from tree to bottle, focusing on apples and other fruits grown at Golden Harvest in Valatie and other local farms. The tasting room is open seven days a week and is a direct window into how Derek and his team keep up their spirits. Hillrock Estate Distillery in Ancram produces spirits made with grain grown on the farm which is floor malted and distilled in a copper pot still. This is a simplistic way to describe a labor-intensive process that yields exceptional results. Tours are available by reservation. Hudson Brewing Company is a short walk from the Chamber offices on Front Street and across the lot from Basilica. They boast a laid-back vibe and a line up of beer to please just about anyone. They also have live music and other events, and are open five days a week.
Hudson-Chatham Winery was Columbia County’s first winery. Its tasting room is open 5 days a week and now features a number of wines made from Ghent-grown grapes. Open all year, the summer is a special time at the winery for hanging out and enjoying the views and the wines – and other foods and music and events. They’re having their 12th Annual Sangria Festival on Saturday, August 10. Old Klaverack Brewery is in Claverack, and has a beautiful site where you’ll find hops growing along the driveway to the taproom. They host events throughout the year, too, including their signature Lobster Bake in August. Olde York Distillery is also in Claverack. Defined by their spirits made from locally sourced ingredients as diverse as nasturtium, black walnut, lavender, black currants, and more, they’re also well known for hosting local food producers for pop-ups. You can’t go wrong in Columbia County. In June and every month, there are so many ways to support the locals who are all winners all the time. Cheers! (And see you at PS21 on the 27th.)

Dairy Queen, Stewarts, The Grand, Super Cuts, Applebee’s, Extra Mart, Bartlett House, Cedar Flow Construction, Baker Service Center, Schweitzer-Mauduit International and People Woodland Hills are just a few of the businesses that were represented at this year’s Inaugural “Career Signing Day” in Columbia County. The “Career Signing Day” event was held at Questar III in Greenport. The signing was both a celebration and recognition of Columbia County High School Students that will have successfully matriculated and graduated from High School and are workforce ready and prepared. These students are joining the workforce and will be
contributing immediately to the Columbia County Economy. While we always recognize athletes that are going on to play sports in college, we barely recognize those who are prepared to join the workforce immediately. This year in collaboration with the Chamber’s Workforce Education and Preparedness Committee thru the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and Questar III we were able to host the first ever “Career Signing Day” in Columbia County. Special thanks to Ginsberg’s Foods, Inc., Columbia-Greene Media, Saturn Industries, Dairy Queen and Global Mart (Extra Mart) for their support in making this a successful event.
