Snowmobile brawl under investigation
By Bill Williams Columbia-Greene Media
Columbia and Greene counties are preparing for February’s first winter storm that is expected to have an impact on travel late Thursday and all day Friday. The National Weather Service posted a Winter Storm Watch for Greene and Columbia counties from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon. The area should see a little of everything, starting with rain, and then freezing rain, sleet, ice and snow over the 24-hour period, local meteorologist Allan Porreca said Wednesday. The storm will move into the region early Thursday morning as rain, with temperatures remaining in the upper 30s, Porreca said. The rain will become heavier Thursday afternoon before transitioning to freezing rain as temperatures drop below 32 degrees, when a cold front moves slowly through Columbia and Greene counties, Porreca said. The freezing rain could continue until midnight, accumulating up to two-tenths of an inch of ice, before changing to sleet, Porreca said. Several hours of sleet and snow could accumulate 1-4 inches early Friday morning, before changing to all snow around dawn.

PALENVILLE — State police are continuing to investigate a large fight that occurred early Monday morning in Palenville that involved individuals riding snowmobiles and residents of a cabin, said Beau Duffy, director of information for state police.
At about 1 a.m., multiple police agencies responded to 560 Route 32A after Greene County 911 received reports of a large fight. The caller said the melee involved baseball bats and reports of shots fired. State police would not confirm the type of weapon used in the brawl because
the incident is still under investigation, Duffy said. Police did not say if anyone was injured in the fight. Police remained at the scene for several hours on Monday investigating the incident. The initial investigation indicated that a dispute See BRAWL A2

Greene and Columbia counties will share a state senator if the Legislature’s proposed new Senate and Assembly lines for the next decade are approved as anticipated this week. The current 46th Senate District, represented by freshman Sen. Michelle Hinchey, D-Saugerties, is proposed to include the western half of Columbia County as the 48th Senate District under the Democratic-led body’s maps released this week. The Legislature, with a supermajority of Democrats, voted to accept their proposed lines for the state’s 26 congressional districts Wednesday.
Legislative committees are expected to move the bill proposing the Senate and Assembly lines for the next decade Thursday. The bills will be sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul, who can change, veto or sign the maps into law. Candidates are eager to start campaigning in early March for the scheduled June 28 primary, for which the new lines must be in place for. Hochul declined to comment on the maps until an adopted set arrives on her desk. The map revision process must See SENATE A2
