Some testimony about New York City police officers’ use of excessive force was inaccurate and demonstrations were more violent than police have seen in years, the city police commissioner testified Monday as part of New York’s investigation into police interactions with the public during recent protests. New York state Attorney General Letitia James has received more than 300 telephone and email complaints as part of her
investigation into interactions between the New York Police Department and the public during recent Black Lives Matter demonstrations. “I’ve been in law enforcement for almost 30 years, I’ve done police details of demonstrations of 100,000 people .... no two protests are the same,” New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Monday. “These protests stood out almost immediately from executives who had worked in decades and decades of

experience. These were extremely violent — almost from the start — and the violence was directed toward the law enforcement personnel who were present.” Some New York City demonstrations turned violent in late May and early June on the heels of the May 25 death of 46-year-old George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died at the hands of Minneapolis police. Shea said Monday city police responded with force after

ATHENS — Two eco-friendly vessels will be docking overnight in Athens on Wednesday as they make their way south on the Hudson River on an educational voyage from Albany to Kingston. The Solaris and the Apollonia started their downriver sail June 20 as part of the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s RiverWise
initiative. The trip concludes June 26. The Solaris is the only 100% solar-powered, U.S. Coast Guardcertified passenger vessel in the United States. The Apollonia is the Hudson Valley’s largest carbonneutral merchant vessel, powered by wind and vegetable oil. “Introducing the general public See VESSELS A8

Two protest marches from both sides of the Hudson River merged as one Saturday in a show of unity and the search for justice. Organizer Michael Alert worked with Kaya Weidman and Jalal Sabur from the youth advocacy group Kite’s Nest, as well as local youth in Columbia and Greene counties, to hold the Juneteenth Freedom March across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge on Saturday. “This Juneteenth Freedom March symbolizes the importance of Juneteenth,” said co-organizer Jahnessa Mackey. “It is the official holiday of when the last slaves were freed from

Texas.” The rally was also designed to
bring together the two counties in a show of unity.
“There has been a long history of rivalry between the two counties, and this symbolized that whatever is between us doesn’t matter as much as black lives do,” Mackey said. While it is unknown if a rally will be held every year commemorating Juneteenth, there are plans in the works to hold an event of some kind honoring the holiday in Hudson each year, Mackey said. Hudson Mayor Kamal Johnson credited the young people who organized the event with tackling difficult issues. “It was a wonderful display of solidarity that was put together between See ENOUGH A8
