HUDSON — As cases of the virus creep closer to Columbia and Greene counties, including two new cases in Albany County on Friday, local cancellations and postponements are piling up. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced that all mass gatherings of 500 or more will be banned. Any gathering under that threshold will be required to cut capacity by 50 percent. The governor also imposed new limits on visiting nursing homes. In an effort to protect the vulnerable elderly population, only medically necessary visits will be allowed. All state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision locations are implementing new screening protocols for visitors. Visitors should expect additional security procedures and be prepared to answer questions regarding recent travel and contact with individuals displaying
symptoms associated with COVID-19. Visitors will likely experience longer-thanusual wait times and may be denied entry if they appear ill or pose a risk to the health and safety of the facility based on questionnaire responses, according to the DOCCS website. This includes the medium security Greene Correctional Facility, the maximum security Coxsackie Correctional Facility and the Hudson Adolescent Offender Facility. Catskill Central School District will have a half day Monday to provide time for teachers to develop contingency plans for continued learning in the event of an emergency district closing, a letter from Superintendent Ronel Cook on Friday said. Middle school and high school students will be released at 10:30 a.m. and elementary school students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m.

ALBANY — Capital Region hospitals established outside testing areas, suspended routine visits and restricted patient visitation as part of their coronavirus COVID-19 response protocols, health officials said Friday. Area hospital representatives outlined their COVID-19 preparedness plans in a media briefing Friday afternoon at Albany Medical Center. More than 10 area hospitals and health care facilities were represented at the briefing, including Albany Medical Center, St. Peter’s Health Partners, Columbia Memorial Health, Ellis Medicine, Saratoga Hospital Glens Falls Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare Amsterdam. Dr. Clifford Belsen, CMH’s chief medical officer, said CMH has tested fewer than 20 people for COVID-19 as of Friday afternoon. Those tested in the Twin Counties includes two people who were under precautionary quarantine this week, but all results came back negative. “It’s about 15 — we haven’t had to test many,” Belsen said. “It’s obviously a smaller area. The fear of a large number of cases and larger need for testing will be coming, but we have not had that yet.” The Twin Counties had no positive cases of COVID-19 as of See HOSPITALS A2

Gov. Andrew Cuomo opened the state’s first drive-through COVID-19 mobile testing center Friday morning as the state’s number of confirmed cases surpassed 400. The state has a total of 421 positive cases of the coronavirus statewide, including 96 new cases, with Schenectady County joining the list with its first case, the governor said Friday. “New York now has the highest number of cases in the country,” Cuomo said, adding the state has surpassed Washington state, which has seen several dozen deaths. Cuomo opened the six-lane, drive-through testing center in the city of New Rochelle in
partnership with Northwell and BioReference, the mobile testing center, which serves all parts of Westchester County. The facility tested up to 200 people Friday, and is expected to reach a daily testing capacity of 500 people in the coming days. New Rochelle is a coronavirus “hot spot,” where many of the state’s positive cases reside. “The single most important thing we can do to combat and contain the novel coronavirus is test for it,” Cuomo said. “The state’s first drive-through testing facility [will] ensure the highest-risk population gets the tests they need to help us contain and combat this pandemic in an efficient, safe, smart way. As we run our own test and test more people, the number of people that we find with the virus is
going to keep going up, but New Yorkers should continue to remain calm and remember that the more positive tests we find, the more we can limit the virus and reduce its spread.” The mobile testing center is prioritizing tests for Westchester County individuals that are part of the highest-risk population, or senior citizens and those with underlying conditions. New Rochelle residents who would like to be tested can make an appointment by calling 1-888-364-3065. After speaking with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, Cuomo also announced Friday the state received approval for 28 state and local labs to do testing for the
