WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is asking Congress to approve a massive economic stimulus package of around $850 billion to stanch the economic freefall caused by the coronavirus, four officials familiar with the planning said Tuesday.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will present details to Senate Republicans later Tuesday. The package would be mostly devoted to flooding the economy with cash, through a payroll tax cut or other mechanism, two of the officials said, with some $50 billion directed specifically to helping the airline industry.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Mnuchin would like to see the package pass the Senate by the end of the week, he told senators Monday evening in a meeting at the Capitol.

“I think the assumption’s going to be that we’re going to do something, it should be big. Because we can’t assume that we’re just going to keep coming back,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Monday night leaving a meeting with Mnuchin and other administration officials.

Rubio said aid to airlines was likely to be included. “We still need to get people around the country. I have no doubt that’s going to be a major feature of the next step.”

It’s unclear how warmly the design of the White House’s proposal will be received.

which is paid by employees and employers and funds Social Security and Medicare benefits. Many Democrats have complained that such a tax cut would not necessarily directly benefit people who have lost jobs because of the coronavirus crisis. But lawmakers have, in recent days, talked about the need for a huge economic package to stabilize the economy, and it’s likely that some ideas are being revisited.

The attempt to inject a massive amount of money into the economy is reminiscent of the bailouts and stimulus steps Congress took during the economic crisis more than a decade ago. This time around, with everyday life in America screeching to a halt,

the intervention may need to be faster and even more extreme. In 2008, Congress passed a $700 billion package, called the Troubled Asset Relief Program, to try and rescue the financial system.

The package the White House is pursuing now would be bigger, not adjusted for inflation, but it would include things like tax cuts that the 2008 program lacked.

Still, the economic fallout from the current crisis only appears to be gaining momentum. Many schools have closed around the country, and the federal government told Americans Monday to limit gatherings of more than 10 people. President Donald Trump warned a recession could be on the horizon.

The massive package now under consideration would be the third step Congress has taken as it moves rapidly to address aspects of the pandemic.

Earlier this month Congress approved $8.3 billion in emergency spending for public health programs, and last week the House passed a package with paid sick leave, unemployment insurance, money for food stamps, free coronavirus testing and more.

That legislation must still pass the Senate after the House approved modifications late Monday that were billed as “technical corrections” but actually scaled back the sick leave provisions.

After President Donald Trump called the novel coronavirus “the Chinese Virus” in a tweet Monday, an evangelical leader responded by calling the label “unacceptable,” warning that it “instigates blame, racism, and hatred against Asians.”

On Monday, Trump tweeted his confidence in American industries before calling the spread of the coronavirus or covid-19, “the Chinese Virus.”

“The United States will be powerfully supporting those industries, like Airlines and others, that are particularly affected by the Chinese Virus. We will be stronger than ever before!”

In a reply, Eugene Cho, a former pastor of a Seattle church who was just tapped to begin leading a large Christian nonprofit called Bread for the World in July, suggested that calling the coronavirus the “Chinese virus” could be dangerous. Cho said in an interview Monday that he was not speaking on behalf of the Washington-based hunger and poverty-fighting organization and is still living in Seattle, one of the epicenters of the outbreaks in the United States.

“Mr. President: This is not acceptable,” he wrote in his tweet. “Calling it the “Chinese virus” only instigates blame, racism, and hatred against Asians - here and abroad. We need leadership that speaks clearly against racism; Leadership that brings the nation and

world together. Not further divides.”

Cho, who was born in Korea and immigrated to the United States when he was 6, said he knows three people who have been assaulted in the past couple weeks, incidents he believes are tied to the spread of the coronavirus.

“I can’t speak for all Asians,” he said. “I know for myself and my family, we’re not just contending with a health crisis . . . there might be backlash verbal and physical.”

He said there’s a growing sentiment that Americans’ fear is intensifying into anger, not just toward those who are of Chinese descent but toward anyone who is Asian. There’s already an undercurrent of animosity, he said, toward people of Chinese descent, which has been exacerbated by recent trade wars.

“I’m not here to call President Trump a racist. I don’t know him. I know some will say I’m being a coward,” he said. “[The tweet was] certainly racialized and very unfortunate.”

Cho, who once led a popular church in Seattle and was ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church, said he didn’t want to add to chaos but felt he had to address the tweet.

“I pray for him and President Pence,” he said. “We want them to succeed, we need them to succeed. I say this not because I’m eager to pick a bone, but because we want to be able to speak calm

and peace into a chaotic situation.”

He said that in speaking out, he’s trying to strike a balance of being pastoral someone who can provide comfort, peace and affirmation, with being prophetic, someone who’s willing to challenge someone and cause disruption.

“As an outsider from D.C., wanting to work with legislative for vulnerable, hungry and poor, we don’t have to be jerks, we don’t have to be demonizing,” he said. “My concern is that our politics informs our theology instead of our theology informing our politics.”

Republican lawmakers have repeatedly referred to the disease, which originated in China, with terms such as the “Wuhan Virus,” “Chinese Coronavirus” and “foreign virus.” In February, the World Health Organization warned against using “harmful stereotypes.”

America has a history of identifying immigrants with a disease. For example, during a cholera outbreak in the 19th century, many blamed the Irish, and many became suspicious of people who were Chinese during plague epidemics in San Francisco.

Cho joins the ranks of few evangelical leaders who have spoken out against Trump’s actions recently, since many pastors and institutional leaders are afraid of losing their jobs or congregations if they denounce him. In December, Christianity Today magazine published an editorial calling for him to be

removed from office after his impeachment.

In the weeks after, Trump tried to shore up his evangelical base with outreach to different evangelical groups.

Since news of the coronavirus has spread, Trump has turned his focus to business leaders and medical experts.

Trump called for a day of prayer on Sunday. On Monday, he recommended that people do not gather in groups more than 10 people. The Centers for Disease Control has recommended that groups of 50 people or more do not meet for the next eight weeks, meaning many churches, synagogues and mosques will likely cancel inperson services around the holidays of Passover, Easter and Ramadan.

Lawmakers rethink shoveling costs at jail site

CATSKILL — After defeating a resolution for nearly $9,500 in hand-shoveling costs earlier this month, county lawmakers reconsidered Monday night.

The county jail project is funded by a $39 million bond from Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. at 2.49% interest and an $8.1 million contribution from the county.

The county expects to start accepting inmates in July 2021.

The March 4 resolution by the Public Safety Committee called for payment of $9,452 to James H. Maloy, of Loudonville, for hand shoveling snow from 35,000 to 45,000 square feet.

Legislators Patricia Handel, R-Durham; Ed Bloomer, R-Athens; Larry Gardner, D-Hunter; and Jim Thorington, R-Windham, opposed the resolution.

Greene County Legislature Chairman Patrick Linger, R-New Baltimore; Legislator Harry Lennon, D-Cairo; and Legislator Charles Martinez, R-Coxsackie, were absent.

Legislators Thomas Hobart, R-Coxsackie, and William Lawrence, R-Cairo, supported the resolution.

On Monday, the members of the Public Safety Committee looked at the resolution again, this time at a reduced price of $8,705.

Thorington still had some skepticism about the fee, he said Tuesday.

After negotiating the lower price, Thorington concluded that the county was better off paying the fee and moving forward with the project, he said.

The contractors were delayed in getting a roof on the building, Legislator Greg Davis, R-Greenville, said at the March 4 meeting.

ALBANY — State Sen. George Amedore announced that the New York Conference of ItalianAmerican State Legislators is accepting applications for four $4,000 scholarships that will be awarded at their annual ceremony.

The scholarships will be awarded to four current or future college students from New York state. Eligibility is based on the student’s GPA, interest in pursuing a higher education, involvement in the local

community, and individual financial need. Both academic and athletic scholarships are available.

“We want to provide every opportunity to help our young people afford to further their education,” Amedore said. “I encourage students in the 46th Senate District to apply for these scholarships to help offset college expenses.”

Students are eligible for the scholarships if they have a GPA of 85 or above, have good conduct and

demonstrate dedication to pursue a higher education degree, are active in community and extracurricular activities, and can demonstrate financial need.

The new reality of social distancing We now have a new phrase in our national lexicon that didn’t even exist three months ago.

Social distancing.

The distance is widening. Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL are postponed indefinitely.

So is fantasy baseball. One sportswriter summed it up nicely: “Baseball in 2020?

That’s the fantasy.”

Bars and restaurants are closed, so nowhere to drown our sorrows. Restaurants are serving only takeout and delivery. There will be no socializing over lunch or dinner.

Movie theaters are closed

until further notice. Some might argue we aren’t missing anything, but James Bond’s 25th anniversary adventure, Disney’s liveaction Chinese heroine, a quiet place of alien monsters and those fast and furious cars are stuck in box-office limbo. The joke going around Hollywood is that Netflix planted the coronavirus to keep people home in front of their televisions. Nothing like a little comic relief.

This is about more than sports and movies, of course. It’s an issue of public health, keeping people safe. It’s a matter of life and

death.

But it’s going to be a long haul of social distancing. It can’t get much more distanced.

Many, many people are going to spend a long time in their homes with nowhere to go and nobody to visit. It will be time to dust off that book you always wanted to read, bingewatch that television series you’ve been waiting to see or, if you have sports TV networks, switch on that classic game you always wanted to revisit.

Such are the facts of life of 2020’s new normal.

Trump’s reckless decisions have led to unnecessary Middle Eastern crisis The Washington Post

In the shadow of the mounting covid-19 pandemic, the Trump administration has been drawn into another cycle of escalating hostilities with Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. Twice since Wednesday, volleys of rockets launched by Tehran’s proxies have struck the sprawling Camp Taji base north of Baghdad, killing two Americans and seriously wounding at least two others. A retaliatory U.S. strike hit five sites described as weapons depots for the Kataib Hezbollah militia, leaving a number of militiamen and several Iraqi government soldiers dead. Both sides are threatening further action.

The renewed hostilities suggest that Iran and its Iraqi proxies were undeterred by the killing of senior Iranian strategist Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani and a senior Iraqi militia commander in a U.S. drone strike in early January. They raise anew two critical dangers for the Trump administration: that Iran will succeed in pushing U.S. forces out of Iraq, or that it will draw the United States into a larger military conflict.

Those might seem like extraordinary ambitions for the regime of Ayatol-

lah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, at a time when it is grappling with one of the world’s most severe outbreaks of coronavirus, on top of a severe economic contraction and mounting domestic unrest. But the ruling ayatollah may see conflict with the United States as the best way out of his internal challenges; after all, the death of Soleimani produced a rare outpouring of nationalist sentiment.

Moreover, the Iranian campaign against U.S. forces in Iraq is not easily countered. It is hard to defend U.S. forces posted on Iraqi military bases from sudden volleys of short-range rockets, like those that have rained down on Camp Taji in the past week. And retaliatory U.S. action inside Iraq risks further alienating the Iraqi government, some of whose leaders are already pressing for a U.S. withdrawal.

President Donald Trump may well be tempted to withdraw the 5,000 U.S. troops deployed to fight the Islamic State in Iraq. On Monday the anti-Islamic State mission announced that hundreds of troops would be redeployed from several smaller bases to larger ones in Iraq, or in Syria and

Kuwait. While that may be prudent in view of the mounting risk of rocket attacks, a full U.S. pullout would hand Iran a major strategic victory. Having made containment of Tehran’s regional ambitions a pillar of his foreign policy, Trump would have ensured Iranian dominance in Iraq as well as Syria and Lebanon.

One alternative is to step up U.S. counterstrikes against Iranian targets in Iraq and perhaps in Iran itself, in an effort to restore deterrence.

That would risk a political backlash in Iraq and perhaps more U.S. casualties from Iranian counterattacks - which is what the hard-line Iranian leadership may be hoping for. Or U.S. commanders could seek to muddle through with partial redeployments, more defensive measures and appeals to Iraqi leaders to rein in Iran’s proxies.

In all, Trump faces a perilous Middle Eastern morass that is mostly of his own making. His reckless decision to scrap the nuclear deal with Iran and renew economic warfare on its regime has led directly to an unnecessary crisis he must now manage amid the covid-19 pandemic.

Why Joe Biden is the antidote to this virus WASHINGTON — Joe Biden isn’t inspiring. He fluttered some hearts when he first ran in 1987, but he is far less inspirational now, at 77, than he was in his prime. That’s part of the reason, despite his far-abovethe-rest résumé, that Biden’s candidacy stumbled before it succeeded. Democrats were looking for something new and improved before they recognized it was time to settle for Biden.

This is all fine — better than fine, actually. If 1964 was a time for choosing, as Ronald Reagan put it when he went on TV to argue for Barry Goldwater, 2020 is a time for settling, in the multiple senses of that word.

It is a time for settling on a candidate whom a broad majority of Democrats, and Americans, can agree. It’s a time for settling the country down, after three-plus years of ugliness and the divisiveness that both preceded and created the Trump phenomenon. It is a time for settling for Biden.

Biden as candidate is comfort food, calming and familiar.

After flirtations with the new (Pete Buttigieg), the provocative (Bernie Sanders) and the planner (Elizabeth Warren), Biden is, it turns out, the one we’ve been waiting for. He is not the candidate, and would not be the president, of hope and change; he is the avatar of normalcy.

This was, even before the coronavirus, Biden’s fundamental argument: that his would be a restoration presidency — of American values, of America’s place in the world.

And, perhaps even more, of a president who does not whip through three White House chiefs of staff and three national security advisers (Trump is on his fourth, in both cases); who does not tweet and attack incessantly; who can be counted on, if not for the “bold, persistent experimentation” of an FDR, then at least for capable governance.

Biden’s campaign this

MARCUS summer and fall will not be a battle for adopting Medicarefor-all. It will be, as he said in announcing his candidacy, a “battle for the soul of this nation,” a rejection of an administration he described as “an aberrant moment in time.”

And even though Biden’s campaign website brags about his “Bold Ideas,” the verbs belie the adjective: “revoke,” “reverse,” “renew,” “restore,” “reassert,” “rescind,” “revitalize.” That means undoing the damage done by Trump, overturning specific policies and rebuilding the domestic expertise and international alliances trashed by four years under the 45th president.

Jonathan Chait argues in New York magazine that, as much as Biden’s campaign is founded on “the return to normalcy,” his domestic agenda, “while nowhere near as radical as the Bernie Sanders platform, is almost certainly to the left of anything even a Democraticrun Congress would pass.”

Biden proposes a tax increase on the wealthy that would amount to $4 trillion over a decade. He advocates trillions more in additional spending - on clean energy, education and housing. He has endorsed a $15-per-hour minimum wage.

But that seems as much a reflection of how the Democratic voters have moved and how the political debate has evolved as it is about who Biden is. Warren ran under the banner of “bold, structural change.” Biden is more about the art of the

possible.

Under the current circumstances, this is a feature, not a bug. Biden can coalesce the votes of African Americans and women, particularly suburban women, while luring back the white, non-college-educated voters who turned out for Trump in key states four years ago.

Second, Biden at the top of the ticket can help Democrats retain control of the House and -- as important as retaking the White House -- winning a majority in the Senate. So much of what any president can do is determined not by the stated agenda but by the capacity to transmit those policies into action. Just ask Barack Obama.

Third, and even with control of both houses of Congress, there are limits to the transformational change that any president can accomplish. Yes, the country faces large and pressing problems (combating climate change, reducing income inequality), but simply cleaning up the Trumpian mess and restoring order are enough to occupy the energies of any Democratic president for at least a single term.

If that wasn’t clear before the pandemic, it is now. Trump’s response to the coronavirus — a familiar but dangerous combination of ineptitude, denialism and self-interest — has driven that point home.

“This election isn’t about ideology; it’s about competence,” Michael Dukakis proclaimed, optimistically and inaccurately, in accepting the Democratic nomination in 1988, before losing to George H.W. Bush. The 2020 election is about both competence and ideology. Which is what makes Biden, with all his flaws, the right candidate for a scary moment.

Covid-19 won’t stay behind bars The Washington Post

Like cruise ship passengers and nursing home residents, inmates in jails and prisons are at heightened risk of contracting and rapidly transmitting the coronavirus - with the added peril of violent combustion that is ever present in an incarcerated population.

Prisoners at two dozen institutions in Italy rioted this month after the government, seeking to contain the virus, imposed a countrywide lockdown that curtailed prison visits by relatives and others; in the chaos, at least six inmates died and dozens escaped. It is critical that U.S. officials focus right now on how to limit the pandemic’s effects in federal and state facilities.

There are no known major outbreaks yet in prisons and jails, though that may reflect the absence of testing, not the absence of covid-19, in the facilities. Many of them are perfect incubators for the disease, housing packed-in populations more likely than other Americans to have a chronic condition or infectious disease.

Social distancing, the most effective means of impeding the spread of the virus, is all but

impossible at most prisons and jails. Overcrowding; broken sinks; unreliable soap supplies; a steady influx of new inmates; and, at many institutions, substandard medical care - these are the ingredients that could all too easily fuel the pandemic behind bars.

Some 2.2 million prisoners are in U.S. prisons and jails.

They are in danger; so are hundreds of thousands of corrections officers and others who work in such institutions and then circulate in their communities. All of them need timely and complete information on protocols and best practices for contending with the virus.

Even with full notice, however, intensive mitigation will be required, including shifts in policy designed to thin the ranks of prisoners, especially those most at risk. Prisoner advocate organizations have offered suggestions worth considering. Those include supervised release for nonviolent inmates, especially those who suffer from chronic diseases, and, for some elderly prisoners, expedited parole hearings.

Many state and local institutions that house prisoners are already limiting visits by

outsiders, including relatives and lawyers. They would be well advised to compensate by expanding inmates’ telephone privileges to the extent practicable, and supplementing them with video links.

In California, the state corrections department announced that it has begun conducting parole hearings for convicts behind closed doors, barring observers and requiring that any input from prosecutors and victims take place by telephone or video hookup.

That’s not ideal, as the department acknowledged. But it is the responsible thing to do, and other states are following suit.

The real danger is in doing nothing, on the belief that what takes place in penal institutions is less critical or somehow separate from society - or that the lives of convicts themselves are worth less than those of free men and women. In fact, prisons and jails are porous places; their walls do nothing to impede the spread of disease. The failure to contain the virus on the inside, for whatever reason, will inevitably accelerate its proliferation on the outside.

Investors are turning their attention to one of Europe’s biggest time-bombs: Italy’s stressed financial system.

The coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown will have a significant impact on gross domestic product, and Italy plans to spend as much as 25 billion euros ($30 billion) to blunt the damage of a nationwide lockdown to businesses and individuals.

That means Europe’s most dangerous stock of public borrowing-some 2.4 trillion euros mainly on the balance sheets of banks across the European Union-is going to get bigger.

European banks outside of Italy are holding more than 446 billion euros of sovereign and private Italian debt, based on a Bloomberg analysis of European Banking Authority data. As the coronavirus outbreak spreads to other countries, the Italian debt will be a double burden to financial systems dealing with economic pressure at home.

French banks are the most exposed among non-Italian lenders if a sell-off in Italy starts to spread through Europe’s financial system. The

country’s two largest banks, BNP Paribas SA and Credit Agricole SA own retail units in Italy. Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau will propose changing capital rules for banks at a meeting of France’s stability council next week.

The Italian government has to sell more than 400 billion euros a year to keep its debt in check, which forces domestic banks to buy even more debt, a situation known as a doom loop, where a weak economy and weak banks feed into each other.

Fallout from the coronavirus outbreak could undo years of painful restructuring

by Italian banks. A prolonged lockdown in Italy may boost bad loans that banks have worked for years to reduce and revive the specter of bailouts, sending the whole sector into a crisis.

A Mediobanca SpA spokesman said the bank’s own calculations, which are different from the EBA’s, put its net exposure to government securities much lower at 2.66 billion euros. That includes 150 million euros in state-owned companies.

Nancy Carretta and her two sons had spent part of Monday morning picking up trash at Folger Park in Washington, and now she was holding her exhausted 3-year-old, Joseph, on her hip while swiping a credit card at the counter at nearby We the Pizza. She had heard about a promotion offered by Sunnyside Restaurant Group, the family-run company led by celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, to feed kids free at their establishments, including We the Pizza, while schools are closed during the coronavirus outbreak.

A construction manager by profession, Carretta felt a little guilty about taking advantage of the free slices for her boys, but at the same time, the deal offered a secondary benefit to a family that now has to juggle working, parenting and preserving their sanity in a home where they must all share the same space, for who knows how long. Carretta took the kids out for errands and food so her husband could work.

“I’m trying to keep them busy so he can get his project done, so that tomorrow I can go into work for the day,” Carretta said, as her older son, Frank, 9, almost willed his pizza to arrive. “A 3-year-old definitely doesn’t help working from home or hosting meetings.”

Restaurants around the country are living up to their hospitality tag - providing free food for kids, seniors and hospital staffers, offering a place to stir-crazy parents to chill or just staying and providing paychecks to employees - despite suffering the effects of the pandemic themselves.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, restaurants across the country have closed, been forced to shut down or watched their sales plummet.

Micheline Mendelsohn, deputy chief executive for Sunnyside, said sales have dropped by 50% in the past two weeks.

Still, when she got the idea last week to offer free lunches to children who needed them, it didn’t take long to get her parents and brother, with whom she owns three of the group’s restaurants, and their franchisees on board.

At first she had hoped to limit the offer to kids who got free and reduced-price lunches at school, but she soon realized it wouldn’t be possible to determine who was eligible.

In their haste to make the offer, she says, they circulated some materials saying the lunches were limited to kids with a paying adult and that there was a two-kid limit per family. But she says the meals don’t come with any such conditions. “The bottom line is that if you come in and you’re hungry, we’re going to feed you,” she says.

We the Pizza, along with sister operations Good Stuff Eatery and Santa Rosa Taqueria, are among many restaurants around the country stepping up to feed children, who often rely on the public school system for their daily nutrition and meals. Several establishments in the Asheville, North Carolina, community are offering tacos, bag lunches and biscuits to school-age kids. Restaurants in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and Arkansas are reportedly doing much the same. Little Sesame, a small chain of hummus shops in Washington, is going one step further: In partnership with the nonprofit organization Dreaming Out Loud, the Little Sesame team will deliver meals to residents of the most vulnerable D.C. communities. Its Meals for the City launched Monday at Kelly Miller Middle School in Ward 7.

“We’re adapting to this new reality every day. Two things have become really clear: We want to take care of our team and serve the community most in need,” said Little Sesame cofounder Nick Wiseman in a

Using our kitchen spaces to produce food for underserved neighborhoods, while relying on the goodwill of our fans to help us get it done. It’s a virtuous cycle, and it seems to be working.”

Mendelsohn at Sunnyside says the role of social media as her company undertakes this effort has been mixed.

Social media has led to donations, including from supplier U.S. Foods, which is making sure each entree comes with a piece of fresh fruit. But others have accused her, she said, of doing this solely for publicity.

“Social media, it’s a doubleedge sword,” she says. “My mother always says that you have to look at your business and look at your principles and do what’s right. This was the right move, and we’ll do it until we can’t or we aren’t allowed to.”

Brendan Sullivan, 41, a lieutenant commander with the U.S. Coast Guard who stopped at Good Stuff Eatery for burgers with his two young daughters - Anna, 8, and Mary, 4 - had nothing but praise for the effort. “It’s great,” he said.

“It’s such a hard time for restaurants and businesses generally.”

For Mark Bucher, who owns steak frites mini-chain Medium Rare, the offer to help was a bit impulsive. He was scrolling through Twitter on Thursday and noticed the gloomand-doom tone. “The glass was half empty, according to anyone who had an opinion,” he said in an interview. “And I thought, maybe there can be some good here, maybe people can come together.”

Without really thinking through the logistics and without consulting with anyone, he typed out a tweet: Anyone over 70 who was holed up at home, whether because of a quarantine or simply because they were heeding the advice

of public health experts to avoid crowds, could get a free meal delivered from one of the restaurant’s three locations. “I thought, ‘I’ve got food and I’ve got people,’ so I just put out a tweet not knowing how it was going to go,” Bucher says.

He cobbled together a fleet of volunteer drivers: Some are college students whose campuses have shut down, others are professionals whose commute takes them by a Medium Rare location. On Friday, they delivered 60 meals. He estimated that on Monday night, they would send out about 180. Each afternoon, he gathers all the requests from social media and email and divvies up the orders among his locations and drivers. Orders go out at 5 p.m.

Later in the evening, a different kind of message starts rolling in: grateful seniors or their children and caregivers, writing in tweets and emails and Facebook messages about what the meal meant to them. Photos of smiling faces.

Bucher says he figures that donations, including from the National Football League Players Association, have covered about a third of the cost.

But then again, he says, he’s not actually tallying up how much this is eating into his business. He’s been lucky, he says. So far, his restaurants have stayed relatively busy, although the Maryland and D.C. locations will switch to takeout only now that dine-in service is suspended. “I think if we knew, we’d be scared,” he says. “But I feel an obligation to do it.”

In the Washington area, Po’ Boy Jim, Rasa and Bayou Bakery are also offering free meals to kids. The chain &pizza is offering free pizza to hospital workers.

In Boston, Pamela Carthy, owner of Penguin Pizza, was moved to action by a customer’s order. On Friday night, a call came in: He wanted 10 pizzas delivered to the

Carthy delivered the pies herself, and said she was struck by how grateful the nurses were.

She posted about the encounter on Facebook, thinking people would enjoy the story. They did - and more calls kept coming. One person wanted to send a pizza to an older neighbor they knew was shut in. A woman whose daughter had heart surgery years ago ordered pizzas sent to the hospital that treated her.

Even without a customer to foot the bill, Carthy has started delivering pizzas herself. On Monday, she had just dropped off five to a local firehouse and five to the police department.

She knows the elderly people who live near the pizzeria and leaves food for them outside their doors. She takes a few pizzas home for neighbors.

Her friend came up with a website, feedingthefrontline. com, to urge other restaurants and people who want to help to follow suit. Carthy, who moved to Boston from Ireland in 2002, isn’t surprised by the outpouring. “It all comes down to being Boston strong,” she says, using a phrase the city rallied around after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

She says her business is down, reliant on delivery and takeout. “But there’s always someone who has it worse than you,” she says. “Because of that, I’ll pay it forward. We can feel sorry for ourselves, but what good is that?”

On Monday afternoon, Washington became the latest jurisdiction to shut down restaurants for dine-in customers, limiting operations to takeout and delivery only.

The restrictions won’t stop the Sunnyside Restaurant Group, said Micheline Mendelsohn. It will continue the kids-eat-free promotion as takeout. Parents and kids “can come pick up or we can do curbside,” she said.

American Red Cross faces severe blood shortage WEST HENRIETTA – The American Red Cross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood-drive cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Healthy individuals are needed now to donate to help patients counting on lifesaving blood.

Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-REDCROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

As the coronavirus pandemic has grown here in the U.S., blood-drive cancellations have grown at an alarming rate. To date, nearly 2,700 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools amidst the coronavirus outbreak. These

cancellations have resulted in some 86,000 fewer blood donations. More than 80% of the blood the Red Cross collects comes from drives held at locations of this type.

In the Eastern New York region, 23 blood drives have been canceled, resulting in 674 fewer blood donations.

The Red Cross is adding appointment slots at donation centers and expanding capacity at many community blood drives across the country over the next few weeks to ensure ample opportunities for donors to give.

The Red Cross expects the number of cancellations to continue to increase, which is causing heightened concern for blood-collection organizations and hospitals across the country. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer.

“I am looking at the refrigerator that contains only one

day’s supply of blood for the hospital,” said Dr. Robertson Davenport, director of transfusion medicine at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor. “The hospital is full. There are patients who need blood and cannot wait.”

“In our experience, the American public comes together to support those in need during times of shortage and that support is needed now more than ever during this unprecedented public health crisis,” said Chris Hrouda, president, Red Cross Biomedical Services.

“Unfortunately, when people stop donating blood, it forces doctors to make hard choices about patient care, which is why we need those who are healthy and well to roll up a sleeve and give the gift of life.”

“We know that people want to help, but they may be hesitant to visit a blood drive during this time. We want to assure the public that blood donation is a safe process,

and we have put additional precautions in place at our blood drives and donation centers to protect all who come out,” said Hrouda.

The Red Cross has implemented new measures to ensure blood drives and donation centers are even safer for our donors and staff, including:  Checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering a drive to make sure they are healthy.  Providing hand sanitizer for use before the drive, as well as throughout the donation process.  Spacing beds, where possible, to follow social distancing practices between blood donors.  Increasing enhanced disinfecting of surfaces and equipment.

At each blood drive and donation center, Red Cross employees already follow thorough safety protocols to help prevent the spread of any type of infection,

including:  Wearing gloves and changing gloves with each donor.  Routinely wiping down donor-touched areas.  Using sterile collection sets for every donation.  Preparing the arm for donation with an aseptic scrub.

There is no data or evidence that this coronavirus can be transmitted by blood transfusion, and there have been no reported cases of transfusion transmission for any respiratory virus including this coronavirus worldwide.

“Volunteer donors are the unsung heroes for patients in need of lifesaving blood transfusions. If you are healthy, feeling well and eligible to give, please schedule an appointment to give now,” added Hrouda.

To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms

of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent, where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.

Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass®.

HUNTER TANNERSVILLE ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

A new home town hero has been discovered in Cairo!

While looking through old 1926 editions of the Catskill paper “The Examiner,” I came across a front page article titled “Fighting Chaplain Here on Memorial Day.” The article said the following: “Probably the most important feature of the day will be an address by Rev. Francis A. Kelly, rector of St. Mary’s church in Cairo, and known as the ‘fighting chaplain’ of the famous TwentySeventh Division. Father Kelly saw long service in France with his outfit and is greatly in demand as a public speaker.”

Immediately I wanted to learn more. First, I researched the history of the 27th Division. As it turns out, the division was more properly known as the New York 27th Division. It was one of only three divisions to fight in WWI entirely from a single state National Guard, the other two being Illinois and Pennsylvania. Its initial strength was 991 officers and 27,114 enlisted men. Over the course of the war which ended in November 1918 the division lost 1791 soldiers and another 9,427 were wounded.

At this point I won’t go into the battles the 27th was involved in because this is about the Rev. Kelly. The American Legion is a good source of information. Their website says this about him: “Rev. Kelly was born in Cohoes, and whose early priesthood was in and around Albany, came out of the World War acclaimed as one of the greatest heroes of the day.

Known as the ‘fighting chaplain of the 27th Division,’ his work under fire brought him the admiration and love of his ‘buddies,’ and honors from his own and other governments. Many were the stories of self-sacrifice by the beloved priest at the greatest personal danger that he failed to heed, that he might administer to the wounded

and suffering on the battlefields.”

Remember, he was a chaplain. So, did he really fight?

No, and the moniker “The Fighting Chaplain” is a misnomer. As a priest, I have to wonder if he even liked the title. The May 25, 2017, issue of the “The Evangelist,” the official publication of the Diocese of Albany, had this to say about Father Kelly’s service: “Amid battles, Father Kelly raced to fallen men to carry them out of harm’s way and give them the Last Rites.

Three times, he was the victim of gas attacks, which left his lungs permanently damaged. One dying soldier scolded the priest for exposing himself to danger. ‘For God’s sake,’ the man said, ‘get back of the lines. The men need you.’ In response, Father Kelly gave him water.

Just before dying, the serviceman said, ‘You’re some priest.’”

The Diocese publication also contained this account: “During one of World War

I’s many horrific battles in France, an American was blown 30 feet backwards by an enemy shell that exploded nearby. He got to his feet and marched forward, as many other men did. The only difference is that the man was Rev. Francis A. Kelly, a priest of the Albany Diocese who was serving as a military chaplain.”

As a result of his heroic service to the 27th Division, the Rev. Kelly was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross of the United States, the British Military Cross and several other citations.

The Distinguished Service Cross citation reads in part, “…constantly at the front caring for the wounded and supervising the burial of the dead, often under heavy shell and machine-gun fire.”

The Rev. Kelly’s World War I service is not the end of his story. More on that next week.

About the dreaded ‘IRMAA’ provision Dear Rusty: About a month or two ago I was notified that my Social Security was being reduced from $1,583 a month to about $1,283 a month — a $300 deduction!

They said it was because my income was over the limit on my last return. I filed my taxes “married-filing separately” because my wife has her own income. If we had filed jointly, I would not have had the reduction. My question is why wasn’t this told to us when we filed our Income Tax last year instead of a last-minute thing?

I am a 77-year-old and a 100% disabled veteran, which probably has no effect on this, but wanted to add that information. Any light you can shed on

(not gross) Social Security benefit payment was probably reduced as a result of a rule known as “IRMAA” — the “Income Related Medicare Adjustment Amount.” This is a supplement added to your Medicare Part B premium as a result of higher income, and a higher Medicare premium would mean a lower net Social Security payment.

Although filing your taxes separate from your wife does mean a lower income reported to the IRS for you, it also reduces the clip levels at which the IRMAA rule kicks in. For those who file income tax as an individual, IRMAA applies if your “provisional” income from all sources, including

IRA or 401(K) withdrawals and half of your SS benefits for the tax year, exceeds $87,000. For those who file taxes jointly as a married couple, IRMAA applies if your combined income is more than $174,000.

Incomes above those clip levels result in corresponding higher IRMAA premiums, up to a maximum of $491.60 (for 2020). So apparently your income for your filing status exceeded one of the higher IRMAA clip levels, which resulted in your monthly Medicare Part B premium going from the standard $144.60 to an IRMAA premium about $300 higher. Note that if your income in a subsequent year falls below the IRMAA clip

levels, your Medicare premium will also go down to the level appropriate for your more recent income level.

As far as why you weren’t told this in advance, neither Medicare nor the IRS (nor any other Government agency) will advise you in advance on such matters; the onus is upon you (and your tax preparer or financial advisor) to understand the implications of your income on your Medicare premium as well as your income tax obligation. You may want to speak to your tax advisor to see if there is a tax-filing option for eliminating the IRMAA. Once again, thank you for your service to our country, and I hope the above clarifies

in response to COVID-19 ALBANY - The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley – along with its parent organization, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York – is actively responding to increased emergency food needs resulting from the COVID-19 crisis.

The situation is changing daily, but already food pantries, soup kitchens, schools and other organizations are reaching out for guidance and support.

The Food Bank has provided additional food for several of its school BackPack Programs to ensure vulnerable children have the food they need now that schools have closed. Some food pantries may close temporarily to protect their

elderly volunteer force. In those cases, the Food Bank will either set up special distributions to fill the gaps or provide additional assistance to nearby pantries experiencing an increase in demand.

“We have responded in a positive way to several disasters in the past,” said Mark Quandt, Executive Director of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. “But this situation is unique. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli reissued a revenue projection Tuesday for the state’s 2020-21 budget, which the Legislature is tasked to amend and adopt by April 1.

On March 10, Cuomo asked DiNapoli to reassess the state’s proposed $178 billion executive budget after COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the local and national markets. The executive budget forecast could be $4 billion to $7 billion below the state’s original $87.9 billion projections, DiNapoli said, because the virus will likely serve as the catalyst for a mild to deep recession.

The delay comes as no surprise, Columbia County Election Commissioner Kenneth Dow said. “Things have been changing daily if not hourly.

The state is giving a lot of guidance on these matters.”

Delaying the election is better for elderly voters and poll workers, Greene County Election Commissioner Marie Metzler said. “I think it’s best

“Given the growing uncertainty, limited information available in the middle of the unfolding crisis and need to support the response, the governor and Legislature should adopt a crisis-response ‘bare bones’ budget for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2020, recognizing that changes will be needed in the coming months,” according to a statement Tuesday from Citizens Budget Commission President Andrew Rein.

The state will stop collecting medical and student debt for at least 30 days from March 16 through April 15 in response to growing financial impairments resulting from COVID-19, according to a statement Tuesday from state Attorney General Letitia James.

James’ office will reassess the need for an extension after the

30-day period expires.

“In this time of crisis, my office will not add undue stress or saddle New Yorkers with unnecessary financial burden,” James said. “New Yorkers need to focus on keeping themselves safe and healthy from the coronavirus, and therefore can rest assured that state medical and student debt referred to my office will not be collected against them for at least 30 days. This is the time when New Yorkers need to rally around each other and pick each other up, which is why I am committed to doing everything in my power to support our state’s residents.”

Debt that could fit the criteria for suspension include: Patients who owe medical debt to one of the five state hospitals or the five state veterans’ homes, students who owe debt to State University of New York campuses and individual debtors, sole proprietors, small business owners and certain homeowners who owe debt relating to oil spill cleanup and removal costs, property damage and breach of contract, as well as other fees to state agencies.

The policy automatically suspends interest accrual and collecting fees on all outstanding state medical and student debt referred to the attorney general’s office, according to James.

New York has 53,000 hospital

beds and 3,000 ICU beds statewide. With a hospitalization rate between 15% and 19%, experts project the state will seek a COVID-19 peak in 45 days and will need as many as 55,000 to 110,000 hospital beds and between 18,600 and 37,200 ICU beds, Cuomo said.

For several days, Cuomo has called on President Donald Trump and the federal government to take comprehensive action to maximize hospital beds and available intensive care by deploying the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to leverage its equipment and staff to retrofit existing facilities — such as military bases or college dormitories — to serve as temporary medical centers.

In the meantime, Cuomo issued an executive order Monday to allow the state to increase hospital capacity by constructing temporary medical centers before hospital beds are overwhelmed with coronavirus patients.

Cuomo said he speaks to Trump and Vice President Mike Pence daily about the public health crisis, and thanked them for their team’s work on responding to the pandemic.

“We’re not Democrats and we’re not Republicans — we are Americans at the end of the day,” Cuomo said. “That’s who we are and that’s who we are

when we are at our best... President [Trump] is doing the right thing in offering to step up with New York, and I appreciate it.

And New York will do the right thing in return.”

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut closed all bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms in the Tri-State area Monday night, excluding take-out orders and delivery. It excludes essential businesses like grocery stores, gas stations, banks, pharmacies and hospitals.

The governor said he realizes the closures have caused disruptions for business owners and their patrons.

“If you are upset about what we have done, be upset at me,” Cuomo said. “These are all state-ordered rules. I know businesses will be hurt by this.

I know we’re going to have to then deal with that issue as soon as this immediate public health issue is over, but my judgment is do whatever is necessary to contain this virus and then we will manage the consequences afterwards.”

By law, no city in the state will close down or quarantine without the governor’s approval.

“I have no interest to quarantine any city,” he added.

“Nobody was contained in New Rochelle — you could come and go as you wanted.”

The state’s testing capacity is

expected to reach 6,000 per day this week with the opening of three additional drive-through mobile testing facilities. One opened in Nassau County on Tuesday. Others will open in Suffolk and Rockland counties and on Staten Island this week.

The Greater New York Hospital Association and Healthcare Association of New York State are working to develop a plan to create drop-in child care and expand hospital childcare facilities.

To date, the virus has been detected in 27 counties and New York City. New York City has 644 cases; Westchester County, 380; Nassau County, 131; Suffolk County, 84; Albany County, 25; Rockland County, 22; Dutchess County, 16; Orange County, 15; Monroe County, 10; Saratoga County, 9; Ulster County, 8; Erie County, 7; Schenectady County, 5; Allegany, Greene, Onondaga, Putnam and Tompkins counties, 2; One each in Broome, Clinton, Delaware, Herkimer, Montgomery, Ontario, Rensselaer, Sullivan, Tioga and Wyoming counties.

Albany County has 25 confirmed cases of COVID-19, County Executive Dan McCoy said in an updated statement Tuesday — up from 15 positive cases Monday. The cases span a range of ages, McCoy said, including a 7-year-old.

Kinderhook Village Clerk Nicole Heeder called to notify the four candidates running for Kinderhook Village Board, but most had already heard about the delay on the local news.

She went to work early Tuesday morning to send an email blast

notifying village residents of the change, she said.

It is unclear whether village trustee candidates will continue to campaign until Apr. 28.

There is nothing prohibiting candidates who want to keep campaigning, both Bogardus and Metzler said.

Samuel Aldi, a village trustee candidate in Catskill, said he would continue to campaign on Facebook and over the phone during the delay.

Joseph Kozloski, Aldi’s opponent, issued this statement: “Anything that helps address the pandemic is welcome. I’ll continue to share my knowledge, experience and plans between now and April 28 in ways that are consistent with the guidelines that we’re all

following. As a member of the village board now, I’m working closely with all government authorities to make sure our village residents are safe and well informed.”

Grouping the village elections with the presidential primary could present logistical problems.

“For village elections the hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For the presidential primary the hours would be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., so we would be conducting elections with two different sets of hours, which is logistically challenging,” Bogardus said.

Greene County officials are awaiting answers from the state Board of Elections on how

to address absentee ballot voting, which is supposed to come to a close on election day, Bogardus said. “There are lots of questions. We will prioritize the most urgent things.”

Election preparations had already begun when the governor’s executive order was announced, just two days before the election. The Village of Kinderhook was preparing to clean polling stations and protect poll workers and voters, following instructions from the state Conference of Mayors, Heeder said.

Everything is in flux, said all of the county election officials reached for comment. It is possible that the April 28 election could be further postponed,

said Bogardus.

Vellano said that at the Texas location, general admission was $5, with seniors and children at $3.

Legislator Matthew Luvera, R-Catskill, voiced his support for the project.

“This project would be a way to preserve one of our historic buildings and bring new life to a building that basically is empty,” Luvera

said. “It would help Greene County be another destination place for tourists. This would take maintenance and utilities of the building off the taxpayers’ hands and put in the organizations.

The project has the potential to increase sales tax that should reduce property taxes, increase revenue to for local businesses, and that sounds like a win-win for the taxpayer.”

Legislators Thomas Hobart, R-Coxsackie, and Harry Lennon, D-Cairo, agreed that it sounded like a good idea.

Churchill Downs announced Tuesday that it will move the Kentucky Derby from its traditional date on the first Saturday in May to Sept. 5 this year because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

In a teleconference with reporters, Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen said that NBC is in talks with the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, the final two races in the Triple Crown, to move those races to mid-September and early October. Under the traditional Triple Crown schedule, if the Kentucky Derby is Sept. 5, the Preakness would be Sept. 19 and the Belmont on Oct. 10.

“We hope the parties can reach a final agreement, and will make for a really unique triple crown season and a perfect setup for this year’s Breeders’ Cup,” Carstanjen said.

“We gave [Preakness and Belmont officials] a heads up as we got close to finalizing an

Tom Brady broke up with the New England Patriots in an early morning Instagram post on Tuesday.

Brady, an unrestricted free agent for the first time, posted a farewell message to New England on Tuesday but did not identify his destination in a series of messages via Instagram at 5:45 a.m. ET. The public goodbye was a formal farewell but not the only contact Brady had with the team.

Owner Robert Kraft, who deferred to coach Bill Belichick in negotiations, said Brady called him Monday and the two met at Kraft’s residence.

Kraft had been adamant his preference was for Brady to return.

Brady was permitted to discuss contracts with other teams as of noon ET on Monday. He can officially sign with another team on Wednesday.

“Although my football journey will take place elsewhere, I appreciate everything that we have achieved and am grateful for our incredible TEAM accomplishments,” he wrote.

Brady started every game for the Patriots in 2019, including the wildcard playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans. The defeat followed the Patriots winning the AFC East division for the 17th time in Brady’s 20 seasons.

The 42-year-old Brady is being pursued by multiple teams. Among those known to have met with Brady are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami

Dolphins, but several other franchises were connected to Brady during the offseason.

Belichick said in a lengthy statement he has limitless examples of Brady’s greatness.

“Tom was not just a player who bought into our program. He was one of its original creators,” Belichick said in part of his statement. Tom lived and perpetuated our culture. The Jets are still hunting for offensive line help after coveted right tackle Jack Conklin agreed to a three-year, $42 million deal with the Browns on Monday. Conklin’s agreement came about six hours after the Patriots placed the franchise tag on starting guard Joe Thuney, who was expected to be a Jets target.

Although the 26-year-old Conklin was billed as the top tackle on the free-agent market, the Jets shouldn’t shed a tear for not landing him. Truth be told, Conklin wouldn’t have been a good fit in Adam Gase’s pass-friendly offense. The veteran has proven to be a quality run blocker, but his pass protection for the Titans was dubious.

New Jets general manager Joe Douglas has placed emphasis on better protecting Sam Darnold. Although Conklin would have been an overall upgrade for Gang Green, he wouldn’t have solved their protection issues on the right side.

It was not a shut down because of the Yankees minor leaguer who was stationed less than a mile and a half from the major league complex had tested positive for the coronavirus. It wasn’t quiet because of the national emergency the pandemic has created.

It was a scheduled day off for the Yankees when spring training was planned months ago. So, the players, who voted before the announcement of the positive test, went ahead with their plans to take the day off from their voluntary workouts.

In this day and age, however, no one is sure who will return when those workouts were expected to resume Tuesday morning.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told MLB Network Radio that he would be leaving Florida in the next few days, explaining that it “is becoming harder and harder” to have workouts.

The easiest thing to do right now is remind yourself that, during this dangerous and growing coronavirus pandemic, the negative impact on our favorite sports doesn’t amount to much in this crazy, mixed up world.

And you would be wrong.

Obviously, there is no equivalency between the cancellation of sporting events and the ravages of a life-threatening disease that has already killed thousands around the globe.

Everybody knows that and understands the necessity of doing everything possible to slow the spread of the virus, no matter what the economic consequences.

That doesn’t mean, however, that those secondary consequences, both human and economic, are of no consequence. The impact of the nationwide shutdown of professional and amateur sports mirrors the shock wave that has reverberated throughout the global economy and sent markets into free fall.

The financial crisis also pales in importance to the attempt to protect the lives of millions of people, but no one would deny it still matters.

From a Baltimore perspective, even when you think about the magnitude of all of that, it’s still hard to trivialize the damage that a protracted moratorium on large sporting and other big events might do to an already struggling Orioles organization and a strained local economy.

The Orioles now are facing the prospect of a shortened home schedule at a time when attendance already is in stark decline. The 2019 season saw

a fifth straight drop to a season total for a non-strike year (1,307,807) that hasn’t been lower since the 1970s. Even before the crisis, the prospects for avoiding a sixth straight downturn were not good.

The franchise will survive, of course, and the players will get paid. Major League Baseball and the other big professional sports leagues have proven during their various strikes and lockouts that they are well-equipped to weather this kind of economic setback, but Baltimore won’t be so fortunate.

Even with the baseball team struggling to attract the kind of crowds that once routinely packed Oriole Park, the Orioles are a consistent driver of business for the bars and restaurants that surround the Camden Yards sports complex throughout the spring and summer months.

It remains to be seen how dramatically the crisis affects the horse racing industry, but it now seems very likely that the Triple Crown races will be delayed indefinitely. That situation should become clearer later this week when officials at Churchill Downs are expected to announce the postponement of the Kentucky Derby, which is currently scheduled to be run May 2.

Presumably, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes would fall into line behind whatever date is eventually adopted for the Derby, but even if the races are held in, say, mid-to-late summer, there might remain questions about the wisdom of stuffing crowds that average well over six figures into Churchill Downs, Pimlico Race Course and Belmont Park.

Everyone knows what the Preakness weekend means to Maryland racing, which supports an estimated 20,000 jobs across the state. The huge crowds that show up at Old Hilltop for Black-eyed Susan Day and the Preakness are the economic underpinning for the entire local industry.

Racing will continue at Laurel Park in front of empty stands, but that is much less of an issue on regular race days because in-house crowds are generally small and most betting is now done remotely.

The major tracks will feel that more, but fans and bettors can still watch televised races on various betting apps, while fans of the major sports might have to content themselves with rebroadcasts of classic games.

Give some credit to the NCAA — which I rarely do — for doing the right thing to lessen the negative impact on the spring sports athletes who have had their seasons cut short. The addition of an additional year of eligibility for seniors will allow those who decide to continue an opportunity to finish their degrees or begin graduate studies.

The NCAA announced that it is also considering what to do for winter sports athletes who have lost their conference and national tournaments.

That also might involve some eligibility extensions, but it’s sad to see local college basketball stars such as Maryland’s Anthony Cowan Jr. and Kaila Charles unable to make a final run at the Final Four.

Couldn’t be helped, but it’s not a small thing, even if it doesn’t compare with everything else going on in the world.

Everything changed Sunday evening.

That’s when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended canceling or postponing all events nationwide with more than 50 people for the next eight weeks. That recommendation touched virtually every aspect of life in America. That includes, perhaps most prominently, professional sports.

The NHL, following the NBA’s lead last week, put its season on pause because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It instructed its players to remain in their team’s city with the hope of being able to reopen training facilities within a week or two. That hope was dashed after the CDC’s recommendation. Monday, the NHL agreed to shut down for 60 days and told its players to head to their homes — nationally and internationally — and selfisolate until at least March 27. The league’s new hope is to start a training camp 45 days into the 60-day period.

That means no hockey until at least mid-May. It doesn’t take a genius to see the NHL season is very much in jeopardy.

The NHL Network reported Monday the American Hockey League already has decided to cancel its season.

Would you really be surprised if the NHL did the same thing?

Do you really want hockey in August?

The same is true of the NBA season. Teams are preparing for a mid-June resumption of their schedule.

Even that might be wishful thinking.

MLB has a little more time on its side and has a chance to finish its season by playing a large percentage of its games without the interruptions that the NHL and NBA are enduring. Last week, MLB announced it was delaying the start of its season by at least two weeks. As it turns out, “at least” were the key words. MLB said Monday it will follow the CDC’s recommendation, which takes the game to mid-May. After that, players

— certainly pitchers — would need a second spring training of two or three weeks. Now, we’re talking June, at best. Good luck with that.

The NFL, at least for now, is proceeding mostly with business as usual with free agency scheduled to start Wednesday. It has taken severe criticism from some people, including internally, for not joining the other leagues in shutting down. One NFL general manager told Peter King of NBC Sports, “It’s arrogant. It looks gross. We need to chill out for a while. The optics of it are going to be awful.”

That GM was referring to the obscene money that already has been thrown at free agents at a time when there is a worldwide health crisis, people are losing their jobs and ability to feed their family and the economy is beaten almost beyond recognition. I get that to a degree, but I thought we were long past the days when people were upset about the salaries of star athletes.

It is not as if the NFL is putting anyone at risk for the new coronavirus by proceeding. It is not as if it is playing games with packed stadiums. It is conducting its business remotely. Who is hurt by that?

That isn’t to say the NFL hasn’t felt the first sting from the CBC’s recommendation. The league announced Monday it will hold its annual draft April 23-25 but do it without the usual hoopla that surrounds it. There will be no party in Las Vegas.

Expect Roger Goodell to announce each first-round selection in front of nothing more than a television camera.

The NFL could face more difficult decisions in the weeks ahead. Organized Team Activities in May could be — maybe even likely will be — canceled. So could minicamps in June.

The way things are going, the NFL should be happy if its training camps open in July and its season starts on time in September.

You know as well as I do that there are no guarantees with the COVID-19 virus.

When Delonnie Hunt found out that the final two events on his high school basketball team’s schedule were canceled because of concerns about the novel coronavirus outbreak, the senior from Rock Creek Christian Academy in Upper Marlboro, Md., thought not just of the lost opportunity to play a few more games with his teammates before graduation. He also thought about his future.

Rock Creek Christian won’t get to play in the Capital Beltway League tournament or the prestigious, well-scouted Alhambra Catholic Invitational this year. For Hunt, a 5-foot-11 guard who has drawn interest from mid-major programs including Wagner and Miami (Ohio), that means his last chance to impress schools that may not have previously noticed him is gone.

“You still have coaches calling, but of course you also have coaches that you’re waiting for,” Hunt said. “But you don’t want to take the gamble and wait too long and then you have nowhere to go. So you’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. With the coronavirus stuff, you start to think: ‘Should I commit? Or wait?’ “ As high school basketball state

playoffs, local and national showcases such as the McDonald’s all-American game and AAU competitions across the country have been canceled or postponed, recruiting has been thrown into a lurch that could have lasting implications for college basketball.

Many players outside the relatively small group of top-level recruits who have already established their game on a national scale are losing a final chance to prove themselves. College coaches are not only losing the ability to evaluate recruits in person during those games, but they can also no longer host recruits on campus or make in-house visits. On Friday, the NCAA’s Division I Council Coordination Committee banned in-person recruiting for coaches and suspended official and unofficial campus visits for recruits until at least April 15.

“It’s just the new reality,” said Evan Daniels, the director of recruiting at 247Sports. “It’s going to impact the high school Class of 2021. It’s going to impact the high school Class of 2020 - there are still guys that are trying to make decisions. It’s going to impact the transfer market. It’s going to impact all of college basketball recruiting.”

While many players are concerned about losing an evaluation period - Nike’s

Elite Youth Basketball League canceled its April and May events for boys and girls - coaches are more worried about not being able to see their recruits in person.

Even in the spring, relatively late in the recruiting calendar, there are many highly touted, unsigned players left for whom those visits are significant.

Azzi Fudd, the Class of 2021′s No. 1 recruit out of St. John’s College High in the District, is one such player. Fudd said Monday she has had four or five home visits so far. One she had scheduled for Tuesday and another for next week were canceled.

The guard doesn’t have a set timeline for when she wants to commit, but she was hoping to narrow her list this spring.

“Being able to text or call every once in a while to talk is good, but I do think home visits and seeing them face to face - and how they interact with you in your home environment - it lets you see them in a different way,” Fudd said.

Coaches looking to plug holes in their rosters with transfers are also in a jam without being able to show players around their campuses. Daniels estimates there are around 300 transfer players on the men’s basketball market alone right now, many of whom may be choosing their next schools based solely

on relationships they have made over the phone, unless they wait until late May or early June to take visits.

Even then, as Maryland women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese said over the weekend, no one knows what campus visits will look like.

“For all of us, we’re looking at - if our kids don’t come back to campus, which we don’t know, how do you host recruits without your players and students?”

Frese said.

“It’s going to slow down the process of what our roster is going to look like next season,” Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon said on a teleconference Monday. “ . . . Even though we have a lot of great players coming back, we still need to add some pieces. So patience is going to be a big thing for me, which I don’t have.”

Those entrenched in AAU basketball worry that the cancellation of spring evaluation opportunities will put more pressure on players to impress during tournaments in the late summer and fall. The skewed timetable could also stress evaluators, who have a say in recruits’ rankings and reputations. Daniels canceled eight weeks’ worth of travel Friday and plans to be more aggressive during the fall evaluation periods than he usually is.

Major League Baseball acknowledged Monday that the start of its season would be delayed for months, not weeks. The league offered no timetable but said it remains “committed to playing as many games as possible when the season begins.”

In accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the earliest MLB could begin the season is May 9, although that appears unlikely.

Estimates for Opening Day range among front office employees, agents and players from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July, raising the question: Could the first All-Star Game scheduled for Dodger Stadium in 40 years be delayed this year, or rescheduled for another year? On Monday, the league said only that it remains hopeful of playing the All-Star Game in Los Angeles this year.

The challenge in projecting a timeline for reopening training camps and starting the season is that no one can project the timeline for the progression of the coronavirus.

from the CDC that sporting events and other large gatherings be canceled or postponed through at least May 9.

In its statement, the league said “the opening of the 2020 regular season will be pushed back in accordance with that guidance.” The league had said last week that it would postpone Opening Day for “at least two weeks,” or from March 26 to April 9.

The usual season is 162 games. In 1995, following the settlement of a player strike, the season was cut to 144 games.

In 1981, when a player strike wiped out almost two months of the season, MLB played a split season in which teams averaged 107 games, and the All-Star Game kicked off the second half of the season.

The league also plans to offer recommendations to teams about financial compensation for game-day workers.

“There are people who will need that help,” St. Louis Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Meanwhile, on Monday, MLB and the players’ union jointly announced a $1 million donation targeted toward vulnerable populations during the coronavirus crisis. The donation will be split among Feeding America, for use by food banks helping to feed families with children suddenly displaced by school closures, and Meals on Wheels, for expansion of its meal delivery program to senior citizens.

The Yankees minor leagues are quarantined through March 25 and the team is taking care of their accommodations and delivering meals to them.

The Maryland Jockey Club, which operates the Preakness, has yet to comment on the schedule change announced by Churchill Downs on Tuesday. From 1923 to 1931, the Preakness came before the Kentucky Derby on the racing schedule.

New information about efforts to slow the spread of the virus are constantly emerging, and the ongoing best practices could further delay MLB’s scheduling.

The league is adhering to the latest guidelines established by the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred held a conference call with all 30 clubs on Monday before releasing the new update.

“Following last night’s newly updated recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) restricting events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks, the opening of the 2020 regular season will be pushed back in accordance with that guidance,” MLB’s statement said.

While the league will continue taking precautions and listening to public health experts, the statement included that “the clubs remain committed to playing as many games as possible when the season begins.”

The Trump administration released new guidelines for the public — hours after MLB again delayed the season — including closing schools and avoiding groups of more than 10 people. Trump suggested the duration of the crisis could leak into August.

With new guidelines coming from state and federal health officials, the start of the season is just as uncertain.

While officially MLB has only delayed the start of the season just two weeks, New York City just closed bars and restaurants to keep people a

safe distance from each other.

Large scale gatherings like at Yankees Stadium (which is just 14.5 miles from the hot spot in New Rochelle) are unlikely to happen anytime before May or June. There are reports that baseball will not start its season until Memorial Day weekend and front office executives from two teams said at this point that would not be far-fetched.

In fact, some expect the next step will be for major league clubs to completely shut down their spring training facilities.

Even Friday, when teams met after MLB shut down spring training and delayed the season, some clubs were more forceful in encouraging their players to stay away.

Cashman, however, said the Yankees will adhere to what

the league and health officials tell them to do.

“That would be above my paygrade,” Cashman said. “I can tell you our leadership — Rob Manfred on behalf of the 30 clubs and then obviously the leadership of the Players Association under Tony Clark’s guidelines are doing everything in their power to evaluate, stay connected with the government agencies, with CDC about what we should be doing.

“Clearly throughout the country at this stage, all businesses haven’t been shut down,” Cashman continued.

“They’re evaluating on a day in and day out, week in and week out, month in and month out basis of what should be done or what we should be doing as a society. We are, you know,

walking that fine line ... no different than any other industry or any other community.

“So, you know, I know that the players have great trust in Tony Clark leading them and we have great trust and Rob Manfred and his staff directing us with a very complex circumstance that I think even the scientists that are the smartest people that we all should be listening to are still trying to evaluate and understand and come up with what should be done next,” Cashman said. “So we’re just reacting to that, like everybody else is and trying to find the best practices and trying to do the right thing at all times and sharing that with our personnel at all times.”

The Kentucky Oaks, the annual race for 3-year-old fillies that normally is held the day before the Kentucky Derby, will be run Sept. 4. All tickets already purchased for the Kentucky Derby in May will be honored on the new date.

The Kentucky Derby has been held every year since 1875 but has been held outside the month of May only twice. In 1945, the race was held June 9 after a federal ban on horse racing during World War II - enacted in January of that year - was lifted.

hundreds of thousands of people to Louisville, with last year’s race drawing more than 150,000 at Churchill Downs. But amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, the Trump administration recommended Monday that public gatherings be limited to groups of no more than 10 people. The president himself suggested the outbreak could last until July or August.

Carstanjen said Tuesday that Churchill Downs had no intention of running the race without fans, calling it a “participatory” event.

Moving the Kentucky Derby to later in the year presents a number of issues, considering that the 3-year-old contenders spend the spring running in prep races that leave them in top condition to run on the first Saturday in

May. On Tuesday, Carstanjen said points accrued from the prep races already on the schedule still will count and that he expected Churchill Downs to soon add new prep races to the schedule - “existing stakes races” around the country, he said - in which horses can accrue points toward entry in the derby.

“This will be fun, and give the fans more time to learn about and evaluate this year’s crop of 3-year-old thoroughbreds,” Carstanjen said.

Churchill Downs officials also had to find a date that suited NBC, the broadcast home of the derby, considering its commitments to broadcast Notre Dame football games in the fall. Sept.

5 and Oct. 24 are the only dates the network had available, with the latter one only

two weeks before the Breeders’ Cup. NBC is scheduled to broadcast a Notre DameWestern Michigan football game on the afternoon of Sept. 19, a possible date for the Preakness, and the Fighting Irish’s game against Stanford on the night of Oct. 10, a possible date for the Belmont.

A number of tracks held races over the weekend without fans present and will continue to do so, making horse racing one of the few sports to remain operational amid the coronavirus.

“It’s not a contact sport,” David O’Rourke, chief executive of the New York Racing Association, told the Daily Racing Form on Friday. “The jocks can ride against each other all day and can be essentially isolated from interacting with each other.

We believe this is prudent.

But as we’ve seen in the last week, anything can change.

Regardless, we got to take care of the horses anyway, so running racing incrementally isn’t that far a reach over what we’re going to have to do anyway.”

On Monday, Keeneland in Kentucky announced it would be canceling its popular spring meet after previously saying it would go on as planned without fans present. Officials in England also announced Tuesday that horse racing there will be suspended until the end of April. Despite warnings about gathering in large groups, attendance at last week’s Cheltenham Festival there was down only 5.5% from 2019.

What started as a 30-day hiatus for the NBA is looking increasingly like it will stretch at least into June as the United States continues to deal with a growing number of coronavirus cases.

The Centers for Disease Control released a recommendation Sunday that public gatherings be limited to no more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.

Even without fans, a typical NBA game easily would be pushing that threshold with the number of players, coaches, training staff and officials – not to mention media – who would be present.

In the wake of CDC’s latest announcement and the overall fluidity of the pandemic, the NBA and its teams reportedly are preparing for a possible return to action in mid to late June according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

That timetable, according to Wojnarowski, remains the best-case scenario.

The news took some players by surprise, including Orlando Magic shooting guard Evan Fournier, who posted on Twitter, “Man I woulda never thought it would come to this.”

If the postseason were to start based on the current NBA standings and postseason rules, the Orlando Magic would earn a playoff bid.

Playoffs normally start the weekend after the regular season ends. For this season, the first-round series would have begun April 18. The NBA Finals were set to begin June 4, giving the postseason roughly eight weeks to play out.

Starting the NBA Finals in August would put the playoff start in June, barring any changes to the current seven-game series formats applied to each round.

The league has asked teams to seek out smaller venues, including team practice facilities, that potentially could be used for games under a working plan that the season would resume without fans, Wojnarowski reports.

Marc Stein of the New York Times reports the NBA is looking at the availability of those venues – including G League facilities – through the end of August.

It also remains to be seen what kind of an impact an August finish would have on the 2020-21 regular season.

As MLB scrambles to adjust to coronavirus, minor league players face fear and uncertainty Jesse Dougherty The Washington Post

The players arrived at the facility in Florida on Saturday, right around 7 a.m., with the sun still rising and a workout ahead. They poured milk on their cereal, mixed fruit into yogurt and ate eggs, and, in that way, nothing was different at the Washington Nationals’ minor league camp. But the players were soon told to gather in the facility’s cafeteria, and they knew what was coming.

They were going home.

“You’re not shocked, because you had heard the rumors, but we were definitely scared,” said one player who was in the meeting.

“We now have no clue when our next paycheck is going to come.”

Baseball’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic is still evolving. First, Major League Baseball limited who could be in the clubhouse, removing media and any nonessential personnel. Next, it canceled the remaining exhibition games and delayed the start of the regular season by at least two weeks. Then, on Friday, a joint memo from MLB and the MLB Players Association gave players three options: Stay in their club’s spring training facility, go to their club’s home city or go to their offseason residence.

But minor league players were not given the same choices. Most were sent home without pay or any promise of weekly stipends, which were supposed to get them through the next few weeks, according to interviews with players, agents and executives and a handful of media reports. The minor league regular season was scheduled to start April 9 - a date that could get pushed back by a few months - and the players won’t get paid until games begin.

They cannot apply for unemployment assistance because they are still employed by MLB. They will have trouble finding jobs, a few players noted, because they could have to pick up and leave in a week. Yet without a union, they have no negotiating power in these instances.

Eight minor league players spoke with The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity for fear that doing so publicly, and without their team’s permission, could lead to punishment.

The Nationals player who described himself and others as “definitely scared” made $7,500 in 2019, with his last check coming in early September. He budgeted his winter income, which he made working at a golf course, to last until the middle of April. But now he’ll have to get creative with the $140 stipend he received from the team Friday.

“If it’s a couple weeks, fine, we can scrape by and handle this,” he said Sunday afternoon. “But if it gets to be a month, two months, you could see guys quit because they just have to do something else to support themselves. That’s my biggest worry, that this isn’t sustainable.”

A few hours later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made an announcement that few players missed: It recommended that, for the next eight weeks, organizers

“cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.” MLB announced Monday that it would comply with those guidelines. It will be a while before there are minor league games.

It was Mark Scialabba who broke the news to Nationals minor leaguers Saturday morning. Position players had only arrived in West Palm Beach, Fla., toward the end of the week and had had one formal workout. Pitchers hadn’t been around much longer. Scialabba, an assistant general manager in charge of player development, offered to answer any questions.

Most centered on whether there would be any financial relief from the organization, according to three players who were in the room. Each also described a line from Scialabba in a near-identical way: If it were up to him, the players would receive their usual per diem and get paid come early April. But it’s not up to him.

When asked Monday whether there was a plan to provide financial relief to minor league players in the coming weeks, a Nationals spokeswoman deferred comment to MLB. An MLB spokesman then declined to comment on any specific club’s situation. The understanding is that MLB is in discussions with the MLB Players Association about how to pay major leaguers during this break and will shift its attention to the minor leaguers after that is figured out. “[Minor league] guys are struggling, guys don’t have answers, and there is nothing they can fall back to,” said Jeremy Wolf, a co-founder of More Than Baseball, a nonprofit that provides housing, food and equipment aid to minor leaguers. “They don’t have a union that supports them, so they really have zero say.”

While decisions were made on a team-by-team basis, MLB made clear recommendations on what to do with minor leaguers. In a memo sent to all 30 clubs Sunday, MLB required teams to keep their spring training facilities open to big league players. Those players should continue to receive allowances for food and housing, the memo stated, and be free to work out individually with a limited staff.

Minor leaguers, though, were to “return to their offseason residences to the extent practical.” Teams are expected to cover travel costs and to work with players who cannot feasibly return home, whether home is another country or a high-risk area in the United States. Injured players could stay at spring training to keep rehabbing with their club’s medical personnel.

But those were the only stipulations.

“There are all these reports saying it’s not safe to travel, then they tell us to head home immediately,” said a minor leaguer who was training in Phoenix before the shutdown. “It doesn’t make sense to me at all. It’s really disappointing to see where the priorities lie, as if it would have been too expensive to keep us in camp. Come on.”

The Giants landed Panthers free agent corner James Bradberry on a three-year, $45 million deal with $32 million guaranteed on Monday, according to a source.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman drafted Bradberry, 26, in the second round in 2016 while serving as the Panthers GM. The fifth-year veteran was considered a top-10 corner on this year’s free agent market, though well behind the Dallas Cowboys’ Byron Jones, who chose the Miami Dolphins as his new home.

— seven for loss — and three sacks.

The Giants desperately need help in their secondary, which suffered both from veteran slowdowns and young mistakes in a disappointing 2019. At corner, they released Janoris Jenkins before last season was over and otherwise employed mostly young, struggling or developing CBs. Bradberry has failed to eclipse Pro Football Focus’ coverage grade of 65.0 in each of his past three seasons, but he has good size at 6-1, 212 pounds and should be an upgrade over what the Giants have — though they’re paying a hefty price for it in Monday’s agreement.

The Giants’ available cap space is dwindling quickly, actually, from the

$72.7 million they entered free agency with, per overthecap.com.

Bradberry ($15 million), Leonard Williams’ franchise tag ($16.1 million), new projected 2020 cap hits for LB David Mayo ($2.8 million) and FB Eli Penny ($1.15 million), and a projected $12.7 million they’ll need for their NFL Draft picks leaves them with about $24.95 million in space.

But Gettleman said at the NFL Combine that ideally he’d like to enter the season with around $20 million in reserve for a rainy day or midseason negotiations.

So the Giants can’t keep breaking the bank on contracts during free agency, it would seem, but they’ll certainly search for value buys and maybe even swing some trades to work around it.

NASCAR isn’t coming back until May. Five more races have been postponed.

Monday, NASCAR announced it is postponing five more races through May 3 in accordance with recent CDC guidelines for containing novel coronavirus. NASCAR said it plans to return to racing at Martinsville on May 9.

“The health and safety of our fans, industry and the communities in which we race is our most important priority,” NASCAR said in a statement. “So in accordance with recent CDC guidance, NASCAR is currently postponing all race events through May 3rd, with plans to return racing in Martinsville.”

Words of wisdom impart lesson in self-respect Dear Abby, I have carried a worn clipping of your “Definition of Maturity” with me for many years because it has been inspirational to me. I even gave a copy of it to my younger brother.

Dear Abby, I’ve been friends with “Brenda” for nearly 40 years. We’ve had our share of tough times, but I’ve always been a good friend to her even though it felt one-sided. The last straw for me was a few months ago, when I had major surgery.

I didn’t hear from her for three weeks, and when she did call, she talked about her life the whole time and showed no interest in how I was doing. Brenda has now had major surgery. Two weeks have gone by, and I haven’t called her. I want her to have a taste of her own selfish medicine.

I have been upfront with her in the past that she hasn’t always been there for me. She apologizes but nothing changes. Am I being too sensitive about her lack of caring about anyone but herself?

Over It In California I don’t think so. But if you step back and review your relationship with Brenda, you will realize that it has always been this way. Perhaps it’s time to reevaluate whether maintaining the kind of relationship you have with her is worth the effort because, after 40 years, she isn’t going to change. Either accept her as she is or move on.

What’s causing double vision on downward glance?

For two weeks, I have had double vision when I look down to the lower side. Each eye is individually normal, but I have double vision when using both eyes. An MRI was done by my doctor and was normal. Now my doctor suspects myasthenia gravis.

My textbook lists over 70 causes of double vision on downward gaze. Many of these would cause an MRI result to be abnormal, but not all. Myasthenia gravis, a disease of the specific spot where the nerves interact with muscles (called the acetylcholine receptor), is a common cause of double vision in this situation. Your doctor will likely test you for antibodies to the acetylcholine receptor (or other closely related structures). The diagnosis may be confirmed by an electrodiagnostic study, which evaluates the function of the nerve/muscle junction.

If you do have myasthenia gravis, there are three kinds of treatments: symptomatic medical treatments, immunosuppression and surgery.

Pyridostigmine is a commonly used initial treatment for the symptoms of mild to

moderate myasthenia. It stops the breakdown of the neurotransmitter — the chemical that the nerve uses to tell the muscle to fire — allowing for more effective muscle function. Some people do very well with this treatment, but it is minimally effective for others.

Immune globulin and plasma exchange can be done in people with exacerbations of the disease.

Because MG is an autoimmune disease, suppressing the immune system can help control the course of the disease. This may be necessary for people who do not have a good response to pyridostigmine. Steroids are the usual first treatment. Other agents, such as azathioprine and mycophenolate, are used to improve effectiveness and reduce the many side effects of steroids. These take weeks to months to become effective.

Surgery on the thymus gland is indicated in people with a tumor of the gland, but may also can be recommended for people younger than 60 with antibodies to the acetylcholine receptor. The benefit of surgery takes effect slowly and improves over years.
