ALBANY — Albany Medical Center could run out of testing kits for COVID-19 in the next few days, health officials said Wednesday. Representatives from the hospital said they have a 2-to3-day supply of testing kits remaining, in a media briefing Friday afternoon at Albany Medical Center. “Our current supply is meeting our current need,” Columbia Memorial Health
spokesman William Van Slyke said Wednesday afternoon. “However, any increase in demand could become problematic if additional supplies are not made available.” Officials discussed testing priorities in the event that no more kits become available in the next few days. “If we get to the point where there is an absolute shortage of the testing kits, we are going to take direction from the county. We are going to prioritize those kits for the people

orders and delivery. The regional order excludes essential businesses like grocery stores, gas stations, banks, pharmacies and hospitals. Officials did not release the state’s updated number of fatalities Wednesday. Sixteen New Yorkers have died of the virus as of Wednesday afternoon since the state’s first COVID-19-related death Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins University & Medicine’s COVID-19 live global tracker. At least seven of state deaths were senior citizens with underlying conditions and took place in downstate or New York City hospitals, Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said Monday. The state had 2,382 positive cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday afternoon with 549 people, or about 23% of cases, in the hospital — up 19% from Tuesday. Since the state’s first confirmed case March 1, 108 people have recovered and been discharged from the hospital. “You do build up an immunity to COVID-19,” Zucker said, adding anyone who has recovered from the illness is considered “out of the woods” to become reinfected a second time. To date, the virus has been detected in 33 counties and New York City. New York City has 1,339 cases; Westchester County, 538; Nassau County, 183; Suffolk County, 116; Albany County, 41; Rockland County, 30; Dutchess County,

The low supply of testing kits is being caused by problems in the supply chain, officials said. “We are constrained, if anything, by our outside resources, not by our internal resources,” said Dr. Fred Venditti, executive vice president

The Thruway toll plaza at Exit 21B in Coxsackie at sunrise. The Greene County Legislature drafted letters opposing the proposed consolidation of the state Bridge Authority and Thruway Authority.
To leverage their expertise, increase coordination and operate more
efficiently, the proposed 2020-21 state budget merges the Bridge Authority
into the Thruway Authority, according to governor.ny.gov. With the exception of Legislator Harry Lennon, D-Cairo, who recused himself from the vote, the resolution opposing the governor’s proposed merger received unanimous support. “There is the potential for neglect on the Bridge Authority,” Legislator Jack Keller, R-Catskill, said. “That bridge [Rip Van Winkle] is the lifeline between Columbia and Greene counties.” The Bridge Authority has been selfsufficient over the past 88 years, not relying on tax dollars and never running a deficit, according to the resolution. “The implementation of the governor’s plan would end the state Bridge Authority’s lockbox, opening the door to diversion of funds that currently support its $50 million plus annual expenditures to the statewide Thruway system,” according to the resolution.
