Twin Counties Recruitment Expo

Welcome to the second Twin County Recruitment Expo! Last April, Columbia-Greene Media, Columbia Economic Development Corporation, and Columbia-Greene Workforce NY, along with our many promotional partners, launched the Twin County Recruitment Expos initiative to revolutionize local recruitment and job seeking. The economy currently has a low unemployment rate but still many unfilled jobs, which necessitates a stronger effort than ever before to match candidates with the right position. We were satisfied with the turnout at the April event, and are excited to continue building this event into a cornerstone of the workforce development strategy of Columbia and Greene Counties. As with our last event, employers have also been able to reach thousands of job seekers through our supplemental advertising packages in addition to the hundreds that we expect to attend the job fair on October 8th. Columbia-Greene Media is providing employers to reach tens of thousands of potential candidates through their audience at

TWIN COUNTY recruitment expos

www.hudsonvalley360.com and their partnership with the Job Network, a platform that utilizes matching technology to reach thousands more based on qualifications for given positions. We hope our ability to give employers a larger reach and job seekers more access to important positions results in more people in our community finding the right opportunity for them. This Guide contains a variety of useful information for Recruitment Expo attendees. It has a full list of employers with contact information, informational articles from some of the key organizations that helped but this event together, and helpful articles to help career-seekers in the Twin Counties. We look forward to continuing to improve these events in the coming years and continue to better serve the needs of employers and job-seekers in Columbia and Greene Counties!

The benefits of working in the Twin Counties

Living and working in Columbia and Greene Counties provides unique opportunities for a successful career in an environment that promotes high quality of life. The area has many thriving economic sectors, growing momentum, and a rich physical and cultural environment. The surrounding area is one of our greatest advantages. On a macro-scale, the large markets and cultural hubs of New York City, Boston, and others are just a few hours drive away. Closer to home, the Capital Region is a rising center of technology and 21st century economic development. The Twin Counties themselves offer a scenic landscape with abundant recreational opportunities, numerous cultural and historic assets, and growing strategic industries. Among these growing industries are agribusiness, the creative sectors, health care, tourism, and technology. The Twin Counties have seen an influx in investment in recent years throughout these sectors, which promises to bring increased job creation.

Notable among these investments is the $10 million awarded to the City of Hudson for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, which will bring positive impacts to the broader area. As Hudson rises as a destination for visitors and workers, so too will the rest of Columbia and Greene Counties.

We already have a healthy local job market and regularly h a v e

among the lowest unemployment rates in New York State. At the same time, those involved in building the local economy are always focused on bringing new opportunities to the area to ensure that everyone that is looking for a new career can find one. Some of the ways the region is positioning itself for a prosperous job market in the future is through increased investment in broadband access, supporting strategic industries, and by expanding workforce programming like this Twin County Recruitment Expo event. Through these efforts, we’re working to make sure the local area is an attractive place to live and work for generations to come.

October 2018

Finding work after 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. • Revisit your resume. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their resumes to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skill-sets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their resumes so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. • Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades

prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. • Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. • Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

Accelerating New York’s Capital Region, the heartbeat of Tech Valley.

Unemployment rates continue to hit historic lows: What it means for local job seekers Unemployment rates continue to hit historic lows: What it means for local job seekers In the New York State Department of Labor’s (DOL) Monthly Press Release from September 20, an unemployment rate for the state of 4.2 percent was reported. This is the lowest level for the state since January 2007. The country’s unemployment rate is also at a historic low of 3.9 percent. Columbia County has the lowest rate of any county in the state at 3.1 percent, while Greene County had a rate of 4.3 percent. Albany-Troy-Schenectady also tied as the metropolitan statistical area in the state with the lowest unemployment rate at 3.7 percent. These numbers all indicate a strong economy, but also present some challenges for job seekers and employers. So, what to make of them? One important point is that although the unemployment rate is low, the number of job openings is also high. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in September an all-time high in national job openings a 6.9 million. The DOL press release from September provides insight on what type of job openings are available in New York State. The sectors with the most job gain in the last year were Educational & Health Services and Leisure & Hospitality. Our fall recruitment expo supports these statistics, as a majority of employ-

ers attending are hiring for positions in these two sectors. It is encouraging that there is such a demand for health and education workers in the local economy, as these sectors tend to be more stable during ups and downs in the economic cycle. Leisure and hospitality present some challenges as these jobs fluctuate with seasons and the health of the economy, but the Twin Counties benefit from having attractive destinations in both the summer and winter seasons. While these two areas are the fastest growing in New York, there are opportunities available across all sectors for qualified candidates. An economy with a low unemployment rate may present challenges for employers because the available labor pool is not as big to fill positions, but it also gives job seekers leverage. Wage growth hasn’t increased along with unemployment decreases as it typically has historically, but there have been some signs that wages could start increasing. In past economies with low-unemployment, wages have gone up as the supply of workers has gone down. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports have shown relatively stagnant wage growths, but by some measures July 2018 had the highest wage growth in recent memory. If the low unemployment rate continues for the foreseeable future, it is possible that job seekers could enter a market with better wages, although this is a subject of debate among experts. For now, the most important thing for job seekers is that despite the unemployment rate being low, there are plenty of opportunities available.

Tips to develop top traits for job candidates Here are three tips on presenting yourself as an informed job candidate: • Thoroughly review available materials on the organization you’re applying to: Make sure to go through the organization’s website and search for recent news and events that they are associated with. This will help build an understanding of their activities and mission, as well as your potential role within it, which will help you stand out during the interview process. • Do additional research on the industry that the organization is in, as well as similar organizations or competitors: Having knowledge that goes beyond the organization itself and into larger industry trends will further distance yourself from other applicants and make yourself more valuable to the employer.

Every employer has different needs and every job seeker has a different set of skills and traits, but there are certain things that the vast majority of employers agree are valuable in a job candidate. In 2017, Glassdoor.com, one of the top job posting websites, conducted a survey of 750 hiring decision makers asking what the most desirable factors of a job candidate were. Over 88% agreed that an informed candidate is

a quality candidate. Among the characteristics of an informed candidate are that they are prepared for the interview with a customized resume or cover letter, knowledgeable about the job role and the organization, engaged in their job search, and thoughtful about where they work.

• Develop a well-defined sense of what your goals are in your career, and how the position will help you accomplish them: During the interview process being able to put the position into the context of your career goals will demonstrate to the employer that you are thoughtful about your work, engaged in your job search, and excited to work toward larger goals. Always remember that becoming a top job candidate, and then a top employee, is an ongoing process that anyone can work toward! These traits can all be learned and developed over time and engaging in continual growth in your occupation is one of the keys to career success.

Columbia-Greene Community College Columbia-Greene Community has grown in both size and scope since its start in 1969, while still maintaining its deep community roots. Nestled at the foot of the Catskill mountains, adjacent to the Olana Historic Site and the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, C-GCC is unique in that it serves not one but two counties as a member of the State University of New York. Construction on the heart of the campus was completed in 1974, but to continue to meet the needs of the Twin Counties’ residents, C-GCC has since then has added an on-site daycare center, arts center, technology center, and Professional Academic Center to its grounds, as well as five art galleries and a 450-seat theater that serve as cultural anchors. Both career- and transfer-focused academic options also continue to grow and evolve; C-GCC is a comprehensive, two-year college now offering 39 academic degree and certificate programs, in the Divisions of Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Math and Science, Nursing, and Technology,

including automotive technology and the college’s newest degree program in cybersecurity. Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, and Associate in Occupational Studies degrees are awarded, and one-year certificate programs and specialized non-credit courses geared toward community interest abound. Just last year, C-GCC was heralded for its decades of work to date, achieving a national ranking of 24th of 715 community colleges in the U.S. by WalletHub.com. The ranking used data collected from the National Center for Education Statistics, Council for Community and Economic Research, and College Measures, and places C-GCC second among community colleges in the state. That’s the result of consistent growth from a strong foundation, and of community support that allows the campus to branch out, reach toward the sun, and flourish. Learn more at SUNYcgcc.edu.

Take a cue from successful women Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center. Certain traits could help propel successful women to the top. Here’s a look at some of the ways female professionals can overcome professional hurdles and make their mark. • Be passionate about what you do. Women who maintain passion about their careers are more likely to overcome any challenges and stand out in the workplace. If your profession is not stoking any passion, explore alternate career opportunities. • Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it’s public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career. • Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective. • Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic fac-

tor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming. • Go easy on yourself. While many successful people strive for perfection, achieving perfection is unlikely, if not impossible. Successful people often admit to being their own worst critics, but don’t beat yourself up if you endure some trial and error. Mistakes can be a great teacher, so use any you make to your advantage. • Don’t be afraid to take risks. Successful women are not afraid to take risks. Many may have decided they don’t fit a specific mold and want to affect change. However, calculated risks are different from reckless decisions, and it is important to recognize the difference. A calculated risk may involve starting your own business after learning the ropes in a specific field and testing the waters. Reckless behavior would be opening that business with no relevant experience.

Get organized and improve workplace productivity so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.

Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. • Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance

suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed ‘supertaskers’ were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. • Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts

• Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. • Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.

How working parents can create better work-life balance

Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families.

with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect

A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. • Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that

ployees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time. • Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

the amount of time they get to spend with their families. • Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow em-

• Unplug when you get home. Perhaps the simplest and most effective way for parents to regain a healthy work-life balance is to unplug their devices. How to negotiate (and get) a salary increase

Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for full-time male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work full-time earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption. Here’s how women can get the pay they deserve. • Time it right. Many workers wait until they’ve become unsatisfied with their jobs to try to negotiate a raise, likely thinking that the higher salary will justify the stress or unhappiness they associate with their work. But workers may find it easier to discuss salary when they are happy and satisfied at work. Employers may sense your enthusiasm, and you’ll be more likely to focus on the positive rather than the negative aspects fueling your request. • Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. Sell your skills to yourself first before you share them with a boss. Make a list of why you deserve a raise and then back up those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your resume. • Know your worth in advance. According to the book ‘Women Don’t Ask’ by authors Linda Babcock and Sara Lashever, women frequently underestimate their worth, often reporting salary expectations between 3 and 32 percent lower than men for the same jobs. Find advertised positions that are similar to yours to determine the mean salary for your job, and request a salary that’s more in line with the going rate for your position. • Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect. • Bring convincing materials. Have your ‘proof’ in writing or in substantiated documents. You’ll need to be as confident as possible and having the right information on hand can help seal the deal. Double- or triple-check your info before the meeting. Negotiating raises can be nerve-wracking. But women should not hesitate to ask for compensation commensurate with their experience.

A job fair is for everyone By Mary-Alane Wiltse | Career Builders

On October 8th, the Workforce New York Career Center, Columbia Greene Media and the Columbia Economic Development Corporation along with additional sponsors will host a Job Expo at Columbia-Greene Community College. Over 50 local employers are expected to attend. Job Fairs are not only for people who are unemployed. Be sure to leave the kids at home and don’t empty the business’s candy bowls! Also, make sure you wear comfortable shoes because, you can be standing for long periods. You also need to prepare a verbal sales pitch. This “thirty second sell” should begin with an explanation of the type of position you are seeking, and include a description of your career interests, skills and work experience. It should focus on your strengths and be relevant to the needs of the organization. Although you may feel foolish, you should practice your routine until it feels comfortable and natural. This sales pitch will be part of the first impression you make, so you want it to be a good one.

Your final step before the day of the job fair is to research the companies that will be attending. You should always feel free to call the sponsor of the fair to get a list of these businesses. Then go to the companies’ web sites, read their mission statements, and find out what products they make or services they offer. Spend some time analyzing how you could benefit their organization. On the day of the job fair, try to arrive near the start time. As the day progresses, the likelihood of having a recruiter’s full attention diminishes. The crowds, the noise and the effort it takes to speak with hundreds of people can be exhausting for the business representatives that attend. When you first arrive, stop at the registration desk and pick up First impressions are very important. Prepare the wardrobe you a list of employers and a map of the floor plan. Bring lots of copies because you are going to want to leave a resume with every recruiter you meet. If you are not able to create a resume before the event be sure to get the representative’s business card and follow up after the event with a resume and cover letter reminding the recruiter of your meeting.

does not have any jobs that are right for you, their recruiter may have valuable leads of other companies unknown to you. Remember to conduct yourself professionally at all times. Keep in mind that although the atmosphere may appear casual, you are being evaluated even as you stand in line or move about the fair. Respect other people’s privacy as they complete their contact with a recruiter by leaving some personal space between you and them. When you first walk up to the recruiter’s table, introduce yourself with a firm handshake and maintain good eye contact. Be assertive and ready to launch your 30-second sales pitch as you hand the recruiter your resume. Your goal is to stand out from other candidates. Prepare a couple of questions you want to ask the recruiter, including their hiring process. Pick up any company literature, comment on their “give-aways” and ask for a business card. At the close, shake hands, thank the recruiter and walk away with confidence. Job Fairs are excellent networking tools and a great first step in getting to know the businesses in our community and the people who can help you reach your career goals. Lifelong learning

I am sure we have all heard the phrase “knowledge is power.” What does that really mean? What kind of powers are we talking about? I bet that if we were talking “superpowers”, more of us would have done our homework! On a serious note, knowledge gives us the power to open any doors we want in life, and to be anything we wish. So, where do we get this knowledge? We need to keep learning! Growing up, I always knew I would be going to college after high school, and I did. After finishing my Bachelor’s degree, though, I found that the job market was not what I expected. I wound up taking a job as a data entry clerk at a bank, just for a paycheck. Since this was not how I saw my life going, I found another job at Taconic Biosciences in Germantown as a receptionist. At Taconic Biosciences, I found that there were many more opportunities for me than I had at the bank. I began thinking about where I hoped to see myself in the years to come. Shortly after beginning work, I moved into a job working for the Safety Manager, and discovered that the Human Resources Department is where I wanted to be. I also realized that to increase my chances of success, I needed to get myself some more power, by way of returning to school. Fortunately, I was able to utilize Taconic Biosciences’s Tuition Reimbursement Program to pay for nearly all of my education. I enrolled in an online Master’s Degree program, knowing that it would be difficult enough completing the degree without adding time commuting to class. It was a little strange never actually meeting my professors or classmates, but between the video lectures and the online discus-

sion boards, I still felt like I was in a classroom, except no one but me knew if I was “at school” in my pajamas. The biggest challenge to a program like this is that there is no classroom structure. It is completely up to the student to set a schedule for completing all of the work by the deadlines. If you like to procrastinate, an online degree program is probably not for you. Besides the financial support from Taconic Biosciences, I also had the support (or sympathy) from my manager and co-workers. I spent the next year of my life attached to my laptop, typing papers during every lunch break. As I am sure many of you understand, there is never enough time at home to accomplish what you want, but all of the long hours paid off. I can now add the letters “MBA” after my name. I gained a ton of valuable skills that have helped me be better at my job, which is really what I was going for in the first place. Of course, not everyone is in a position where they would benefit from enrolling in a degree program to further their lives and careers. There are a number of things to consider in your quest for lifelong learning. First, what kind of education do you currently have, and how would more education impact your desired career path? If you already have a graduate degree, enrolling in another advanced program may not provide you with any more of an edge in your career. On the other hand, if you have never been to college, regardless of your career, I would encourage you to take a class or two, even if you do not feel you are ready to commit to a degree program. Second, you need to determine how you will finance your education. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement, so

you should check there first to see what they will or will not cover. If you are not currently employed, or if you are not eligible for tuition reimbursement, there are Federal and State tuition assistance programs, as well as many loan programs that can assist you. Finally, how much time do you have available to spend on education? Do not overextend yourself just to take a bigger course load. You then run the risk of becoming overwhelmed and burned out. Whether you decide that formal education is the right idea for you, learning does not stop at school. I always say “you learn something new every day,” and I try to make that true for myself. How do I do that? I ask a ton of questions, and I read everything I can get my hands on. Give it a try! Find someone at work that you admire (or whose job you want) and ask them about something you do not understand. If you have to take your car in for repairs, ask the mechanic what you can do to prevent the issue in the future. Read the magazines in your doctor’s office, or in the break room at work. Visit your local library and see what they have available. Even the back of your cereal box can teach you a thing or two. Whatever you choose to do just remember that learning really is a lifelong process. All you have to do is ask yourself where you want to be, and then start gathering the knowledge that will take you there! A representative from Taconic Biosciences has served on the Columbia Greene Workforce Development Board since 2000. Visit the website at www.columbiagreeneworks.org, or call 828-4181 ext. 5510.
