Abenaki Storyteller Joseph Bruchac to Kick off PS21’s Just For Fun Program PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century presents celebrated storyteller Joseph Bruchac Friday, July 10 at 1:00pm. This event kicks off PS21’s “Just for Fun,” a series of Friday afternoon events created especially for kids, their families and friends. Admission to all “Just for Fun” events is free and will be held at The Tent at PS21, located at 2980 Route 66 in Chatham, NY. Joseph Bruchac is a skilled teller of traditional tales, a professional musician, and an award-winning author of more than 120 books. they have in their heart. Bruchac lives and works in his family home at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains. Admission to all the Just for Fun events is free and reservations are not required. For other information about this or any other event at PS21, please call (518) 3926121. Bluegrass kids academy
Where do young musicians learn to play bluegrass music? One place is at The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival held every July in Oakdale, New York. In 1999, festival organizer and bass player Mary Burdette returned from seeing kids on stage at the Father’s Day Grass Valley Festival in California with a mission. She told festival promoter Mary Doub that, “we have got get kids more involved and on stage.” Doub agreed and with only a month to go, they started a music program that has become a gold standard for other festival music programs. Most amazing of all is that, while donations are encouraged, the instruction is free! Whether new to an instrument or an old hand, children ages 8-17 are given instruction that meets their musical abilities. They arrive on the first day of the festival, this year Thursday July 16th, and that evening are sorted by instrument and skill-level. They then meet their instructors, get the materials they will need for the week and run through their tunes. The next day, they gather at ten in the morning and they get to work learning what they will all perform together at their “Graduation Gig” on Sunday afternoon on the High Meadow Stage. Each summer, the Grey Fox Kid’s Academy offers instruction to 100-120 students on the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass, guitar, dobro, and cello. From Thursday night until their performance on Sunday, kids receive sectional instruction with an assigned and experienced instrumental teacher, ensemble sessions with the entire group and harmony singing lessons. They also get to meet some of Bluegrass’s most revered musicians who make guest appearances between lessons. To register a child for this unique opportunity, there is a sign up form on the website (http://greyfoxbluegrass.com/ws/pages/bgasignup.php) that helps parents pick the right level of instruction for their young musicians and offer the BGA information about each kid’s musical history. Critical to making this a successful experience is that each child brings along their own instrument and attends all sessions. Now in its 16th year, the BGA also has a senior’s program that offers instruction to a small group of experienced musicians based on instrument and seniority. Long time instructor and agile banjo player Ira Gitlin has been working with kids at the BGA since 2000 and has started two other similar festival Kid’s Academies, one at The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival and another at the Joe Val Festival. So if you have a budding young bluegrass musician at home or you want your child to have an inspirational musical experience, make room on your calendar this summer for the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. With over fourteen colleges now offering programs and even majors that include bluegrass instruction, the future is bright for our youngest bluegrassers.

You Can’t Stop The Beat in ‘Hairspray’ at Mac-HAaydn Theatre
CHATHAM, NY — The Turnblads Edna, Wilbur and their darling and daring daughter Tracy - are back at The Mac-Haydn Theatre in "Hairspray", for three weeks: through July 19. "You Can't Stop 'The Beat" in the fun-filled show that says "Welcome To The 60's", where changes are coming, but kids still want to dance and romance. Based on the popular movie, "Hairspray" is about one girl's crusade for equality on many levels. A TV dance show shares the stage with protests while a lot of songs and humor tell the story. MHT newcomer Chantelle Cognevich stars as Tracy. She's just your normal teen-age girl, who yearns to dance on the Corny Collins show as one of the "Nicest Kids In Town", and who has a crush on Link Larkin, that show's star. Ms. Cognevich has played this role previously at Pensacola Little Theatre; and has also been seen at Jenny Wiley Theatre in Kentucky. John Saunders and Colin Pritchard reprise their roles of Edna and Wilbur, making the touching duet "Timeless To Me" a show-stopper as only this duo can do on stage. Mr. Pritchard played George in "The Drowsy Chaperone" this summer and last year was Nathan Detroit in "Guys and Dolls" and Igor (that's 'Eye-gore') in "Young Frankenstein". Mr. Saunders has recently been turning his talents to directing, but has many memorable roles at Mac-Haydn, including his
hilarious Edna in the previous production of "Hairspray". MacHaydn is happy to have someone with Mr. Saunders' comedic talents to continue the tradition of a man playing the role of the mother, which started when Harvey Fierstein took the part in the Broadway production. Rasheem Ford and Aneesa Folds, praised for their roles of Collins and Joanne in "RENT", will play Seaweed J. Stubbs and Motormouth Mabel. Seaweed shows Tracy some moves that help her cause with "Run And Tell That", and Motormouth encourages them all to fight for what they think is right in her anthem "I Know Where I've Been". Mark Edwards, who played a suave Sky Masterson in last year's "Guys And Dolls" will be Corny Collins. Conor Fallon, seen last year as Tommy Djilas in "The Music Man", will be Link Larkin, Emily Franklin is Penny Pingleton and Jamie Grayson returns to play several character parts as the Male Authority Figure. "Hairspray" won eight Tony's, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. The catchy, clever and touching songs include Tracy's salute to her city "Good Morning, Baltimore", the girls' protest "Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now", and Motormouth's tribute to selfacceptance "Big, Blonde and Beautiful". "Hairspray" performs July 2 to

– Leo Tolstoy Hunter artist Steven Dolan believes that his purpose as a painter is to convey the experience of vision, light, and movement, as well as the “awelike” qualities that nature alone portrays in the approaching storm and the radiant sunset. Steven Dolan’s latest series of works entitled “Hunter Sunset” are all created from the same locale on the outer edge of the town of Hunter, facing west towards the lower slopes of Hunter mountain and the view of the Catskills beyond. In these small works, the artist strives to capture the ever-changing light and atmospheres of the Catskills as part of an collection of paintings, each with a similar composition, that displays the variety of “sublime” atmospheres possessed by the Northern Catskills. The show, at the Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Kaaterskill Fine Arts & Crafts Gallery, Main Street, Hunter Village thru Sun., July 5, is entitled “Atmospheres of Hunter & Beyond” and features 40 of the artist’s small-to-midsized canvases. “A successful painting conveys to its viewer a sense of inner awakening, a connection” according to the 26 year old artist, a New Hampshire native who came to the northern Catskills to follow in the footsteps of Thomas Cole, Asher Durand and other Hudson River School artists. “The majority of my work consists of landscapes, which are either “plein air” works done on site, or studio pieces, in which I use conceptual compositional drawings along with detailed studies done from life and combine them using the techniques and methodology of the Early American Landscape Masters, Fredrick Church, Thomas Cole, and Stanford Gifford,” said Dolan. An inveterate hiker, Dolan explains that total emersion in the “sublime” beauty of nature, most recently, the Catskill Mountains, has allowed him to experience some of the most powerful sensations the world has yet had to offer him. “I paint to create and bring what I have witnessed during these moments, back once more into existence,” Dolan said. “Through use of an adept hand, integral mind, and honest heart, I believe the artist is capable of transcending the restricting boundaries of vision, movement and space.” Dolan credits two important events in his life with his artistic growth to this point: Time spent studying at The New Hampshire Institute of Art, and the experience of a Hudson River Fellowship at the Catskill Mountain Foundation in Hunter Village under the tutelage of Jacob Collins, an American realist painter working primarily in New York City, in July 2010.

Old-Fashioned July 4th Festival at Clermont
GERMANTOWN —The sounds, tastes, and smells of the Colonial era will converge at Clermont State Historic Site in Germantown this July 4 during its Old-Fashioned Independence Day Festival. From 2 to 10 p.m., the site will host a lively, family-friendly festival. First, from 2 to 6 p.m., the focus will be on hands-on experiences with daily life of the 18th century. Visitors will be able to sample all kinds of activities, from grueling laundry to polite tea parties, drilling and firing demonstrations by Revolutionary War reenactors, as well as a chance to meet George Washington on his horse! Afterward, from 7 to 10 p.m., the grounds will be rockin’ with oldies hits, as played by The Greyhounds, until the evening is capped off with a beautiful view of the Saugerties fireworks over the Hudson River. Hot food will be available for sale from the Germantown Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sweet Central Express, and Enjoy-a-Ball (serving meatballs of all kinds, including gluten free and vegan). Free hayrides are available from 2 to 4 p.m. It’s a full day of activities for only $10 per vehicle. Visit Clermont State Historic Site’s Facebook page for a complete schedule of activities. In honor of Clermont’s important Revolutionary War history, Clermont staff and volunteers will be dressed in historic costume while they demonstrate the skills and chores of 18th century life. The mansion will be open for free self-guided tours, from 2 to 6 p.m.
Children’s contests start at 4:45 and will include a three-legged race, cherry pit spitting, and Grinning for Cheese. Live period music will be in the air throughout the afternoon, with performances by story teller and musician Tom Hanford and period music by Salmagundi Consort. When evening arrives, Clermont’s grounds will be alive with classic rock and oldies by The Greyhounds as guests spread out their picnic blanket to await a view of the Saugerties fireworks after sunset. With ice cream, kettle corn, and dinner on hand, plenty of room to run, and easyout parking, this is a great venue for families to see the fireworks show. Music begins at 7 p.m. The site will close its gates when parking is full, so the public is encouraged to come early to ensure access to a spot. ‘Spy’
Starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Jude Law & Rose Byrne Directed by Paul Feig Rated R
Mission: Hilarious Melissa McCarthy shines in spy-spoof espionage romp
Finally, Melissa McCarthy has struck gold—in a movie gives her everything she needs to shine as the movie comedy star she was meant to be. After a promising debut in the supporting cast of the 2011 breakout hit Bridesmaids, the Mike and Molly TV star shared the billing with Sandra Bullock in The Heat (2013) but couldn’t quite get the traction she needed in the sputtering, sophomoric gags of Identity Thief (2013) and Tammy (2014). But this hilarious spy-spoof-ish espionage romp marks her ascension to bona fide marquee status. And she makes the most of every minute of it as Susan Cooper, a CIA operative toiling away in the bowels of the bureau, feeding intel into the ear of dashing field agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law) as he trots about the globe on his 007-ish assignments. But when Fine disappears, Susan is selected by her boss (Allison Janey) to go undercover and pick up the trail of his latest mission. Excited to finally be a real spy, she’s a bit underwhelmed by the frumpiness of her bureau-issued disguises, and her customized gadgets disguised as rape whistles, super-size hemorrhoid pads, and stool softeners. “I’m just missing a shirt that says, ‘I’ve Never Felt The Touch Of A Man,’” she sighs. And she’s told, in no uncertain terms, to only observe—to stay out of sight and to “not engage.” Of course, that doesn’t happen. Rose Byrne, one of McCartney’s Bridemaids’ co-stars, is superb as a frosty Bulgarian arms smuggler. Bobby Cannavale plays a doubledealing weapons trader. Jason
Statham, with a send-up wink to the tough-guy roles into which he’s usually cast, has a blast as a ridiculously rough, gruff veteran agent who resents Susan’s intrusion on his turf—and who can’t stop reminding her about his mucho macho espionage exploits. “I once drove a car off a freeway on top of train while I was on fire,” he says during a sidesplitting litany of his death-defying derring-do. A couple of lesser-known actors also get plenty of room to bring the funny. As Susan’s CIA backup, gangly British actress Miranda Hart becomes an integral part of the second half of the movie—and brings some huge laughs. Same for Peter Serafinowicz, another Brit, who’s had small parts in dozens of TV shows and films. You may not remember him from any of them, but you’ll certainly remember him as Aldo, the amorous Italian with the roving hands—and some other skills, too! The cast is first-rate all around, but the movie truly belongs to
McCartney, whose synergy with writer-director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) is clearly firing on all cylinders. The dialog sparkles and zings, the scenes deliver one-after-another ka-pow punches of laughter and action, and the performances are finetuned bits of comedic, clockwork perfection.
And McCartney both keeps it anchored and sends it soaring, with fresh, feisty slaps of unbridled, R-rated fun and a message of female empowerment set against a rolling backdrop of scenery in Paris, Budapest and Rome. Spy
