to the seventh annual installment of the Midwest Aberdeen Association Membership Directory. Once again, we’re excited to present this outstanding set of advertisers and members to you. We are confident the information in this directory will help expand your cattle network, no matter which part of the country you live in. As you browse these pages, you will find experienced Aberdeen and Moderator producers who can provide you with superior genetic opportunities, offer their knowledge and expertise, and share their passion for this tremendous breed.
The Aberdeen breed truly has a lot to offer. These cattle provide elite calving ease and calf vigor, resulting in higher survival rates with less labor input. Our breed’s efficiency is second to none. You will consistently see cows that wean calves at 50+ percent of their own body weights, production females thriving on less pasture acreage per unit than their non-Aberdeen counterparts, and calves that perform well in a feedlot setting and hang high-value carcasses. Without a doubt, Aberdeen genetics will work for you.
We are proud to host numerous Aberdeen gatherings here in the Midwest Region. Our shows each year at the Iowa State Fair, World Beef Expo, and American Royal are some of the most elite Aberdeen events in the nation. We are adding more field days and junior show opportunities this year and are very excited to get more juniors involved. We invite you and your families to attend. We’d be glad to see you.
We also invite you to join our growing regional association if you aren’t already a member. Check out page 8 to find more information on joining and gaining all the benefits of being a member. For the most up-to-date information about the MAA and its upcoming activities, follow us on Facebook or visit our website. If you have any questions about the Aberdeen breed, are interested in joining our membership, or simply want to talk cattle give one of our Board of Directors a call. We look forward to hearing from you.

American Aberdeen Association (AAA) rules require that all registered animals carry a tattoo in one or both ears. Tattoos must consist of the original owner's herd letters, an individual animal identification number, and a year letter.
Herd letters are assigned to each member when application for membership is submitted, and to nonmembers when they first register an Aberdeen with AAA. Herd letters must be a minimum of two and not more than three letters.
Tattoos Required
American Aberdeen Association rules require that all registered animals carry a tattoo in one or both ears. That tattoo must consist of the owner’s herd letters, an individual animal identification number and a year letter.
When registering a calf born to its natural dam, the herd letters of the owner at the time of birth must be used, and that individual must register the calf before its ownership can be transferred. An embryo calf must be tattooed and registered with the herd letters of the owner of the calf at the time of registration.
Herd Letters
Under no circumstances should you attempt to register an animal with herd letters that have not been approved and assigned to you by the Registry Office, or with the herd letters of another member or breeder.
Herd letters are assigned to each member when application for membership is submitted, and to non-members when they first register a Aberdeen with AAA. Herd letters must be a minimum of two, and not more than three letters.
When registering a calf born to its natural mother, the herd letters of the owner of the dam at the time of birth must be used, and that individual must register the calf before it can be transferred.
An embryo transfer calf must be tattooed with, and registered with the herd letters of the owner of the calf at the time of registration.
Under no circumstances should you attempt to register a calf with herd letters that have not been approved and assigned to you by the Registry Office or the herd letters of another member or breeder. Example: ALR
Individual I.D. Number
No two animals can carry the same tattoo, so the individual I.D. numbering system is important. The individual I.D. number can be a minimum of two, and not more than three digits. Example: 1X
Part of the required Aberdeen tattoo must be a letter indicating the animal's year of birth. It is typically the last digit in the tattoo.
Year Letter
No two animals can carry the same tattoo, so your individual identification numbering system is important. The individual ID number can be a minimum of two and not more than four digits, including the year letter.
Part of the required Aberdeen tattoo must be a year letter. Usually it is the last digit in the tattoo. Below are the year letter codes from 2010 through 2019. (the letters I, O, Q and V are not used.)
NOTE: The letters I, O, Q and V are not used in the year-letter succession.
EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTABLE TATTOOS
YEAR & LETTER CODE
2023 - L
2024 - M
2025 - N
2026 - P
2027 - R
The tattoo should be arranged with the Herd Letters followed by the Individual ID Number then the Year Letter. In these examples: The herd letters are ALR, the animal's individual ID is 1, and the year letter is X.
The tattoo should be arranged so that the year letter follows the individual I.D. number. It should not follow the herd letters or be in front of the I.D. number. It is strongly recommended that you use the animal’s individual I.D. number and the year letter portions of its tattoo as its animal herd I.D. number and possible tag number.
2028 - S
Samples can be collected in seconds with minimal animal restraint. A single-squeeze motion collects a clean, uncontaminated sample, minimizing distress to the animal. The genetic material is then sealed in a specially designed preservative for shipment, ensuring success of the on-farm sample. Tissue contains a large quantity of high quality DNA for genetic analysis, yielding excellent lab results with minimal retesting. USE TISSUE SAMPLING FOR: Parentage Verification
With advancements in DNA collection, tissue sampling is becoming very popular with producers. Scientific advancements in the mapping of livestock genomes, along with continued development of affordable analytics, has changed the sampling industry.

THE AMERICAN ABERDEEN ASSOCIATION PROVIDES FOUR DIFFERENT REGISTRATION PROGRAMS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR CATTLE BREEDING GOALS.
FULLBLOOD - 100% ABERDEEN
These cattle trace back to the Triangie Research Center in Australia and the original Angus purchased from Canada
MODERATOR ® - 50-87.499% ABERDEEN
Both the sire and dam of a Moderator ® must be registered with the American Aberdeen Association. Moderator shall be added to registration papers for these animals.
MODERATOR PLUS ® - 25-50% ABERDEEN
A Moderator Plus® has Aberdeen genetics on at least one side of the pedigree, and must be registered with the American Aberdeen Association. Either the sire or dam (or both) of a Moderator Plus® must also be registered with association. Moderator Plus® shall be added to registration papers for these animals.
ABERDEEN PLUS - 25-87.5% ABERDEEN
These are percentage Aberdeen Cattle with the nonAberdeen portion coming from registered American Angus or American Red Angus. The submitting member must supply the registered, genetic defect free pedigree and appropriate fee to enter the foundation animal into the Aberdeen Plus registry. This member must also be the recorded owner of the dam at the time the calf was born. A flush report is required for all embryo transfer (ET) calves. How Will You Sell Your Beef: How you sell your beef will impact the licenses needed. You can choose to sell your beef as wholes, halves, and quarters of beef, or you can choose to sell your beef by the individual cut. Whichever route you choose can have an impact on the rules and regulations required to do so.
Who Will Process Your Beef: Finding the right processing plant is key to building a successful direct to consumer marketing program. Plant capacity, whether the plant is USDA-inspected, and the quality of work done are all factors to consider when choosing a plant to work with.
Where Will You Sell Your Beef: It's important to consider how you will market your beef and where it will be sold. Some options to consider include whether you'll sell locally or across state lines, if you will sell online versus in person, etc.
If you choose to sell a live animal directly to an end consumer for that consumer to process at a local locker or on their own, no license is required. In this case, meat lockers do not have to be state-inspected and can be licensed as custom-slaughter for an end user. If you are not selling the live animal and instead are selling the actual meat products, the processing plant must be federallyinspected if you will be selling across state lines or state-inspected if you are staying within state. If you choose to store meat processed in this manner, you may also need a state license for your meat freezers.
This is a brief overview of a few of the rules & regulations surrounding direct to consumer sales. Be sure to research the rules within your state. State Extension programs are a great resource to utilize.
