the forward

Unveiled Welcome to our very first edition of The Archway. As we’re sure you’ve noticed, something is different about the newsletter you’re holding. And that’s because something very different has happened at the Edmonton Dream Centre and with it has come some new changes. As of October 5, 2017, the Edmonton Dream Centre has transformed our look and feel to reflect the spirit of our work better, and have rebranded to become Adeara. 2 | the forward

Our mission, of course, remains the same; we continue to help change the lives of women who are at risk in our community. But as we grow in size and scope to help, even more, we recognize the need to ensure that our purpose and our message unite under a banner that unites every facet of what we do and whom we work to aid. From humble beginnings in a street ministry and a little pink house, two families with big hearts—Harry and Ellen Baur and Bruno and

Hertha Buchstein— wanted to make a difference for those who are impoverished, vulnerable and struggle with addictions and mental health challenges. They had a dream to make real change in our community by changing the lives of the women and children we serve. Born of that wish was the Edmonton Dream Centre and as we evolve into Adeara, we reflect that new dream in our new identity.

Adeara’s new logo pays homage to that little pink house from which we started by its incorporation into the “A”—that of a home and archway to safety and recovery. At the heart of it all, the name, Adeara, is inspired by the Hebrew word meaning strength. In this name, we hope that the inspiration for our w omen’s inner strength can be found.

Our Founders they had a dream

From the first steps into Adeara, women can learn to rediscover their inner strength and the strength of God through hope, healing, and transformation. It’s what we like to call “growing forward,” a term that we’ve coined as our new tagline. To Adeara, growing forward means empowering oneself to grow beyond addiction, beyond helplessness and forward into the light of God and into our community again. And with these changes comes an even brighter hope for Adeara’s future. With renewed vigor and purpose, Adeara, today, works to expand and evolve into a newer, larger centre where we can help even more families grow beyond their vulnerable situations. As one of our founders, Bruno said, “I knew God had a plan, and we just did the best we could and put all of our trust in Him.” God is good, and here we are, growing forward because of our faith and service. And Adeara will remain strong with that continued faith and all of your continued support.

a spotlight on...

The 2017 Evening of Dreams Gala This year’s Evening of Dreams, which took place on October 5, 2017, was another historic milestone for us as we unveiled our new identity, Adeara, and raised over $45,000 along with some anonymous generous donations in support of our work. With nearly 300 guests in attendance, it was an honour to begin our evening by sharing a special story about the challenges of addiction and being an overcomer of former resident; Tamara G, who also blessed everyone with a hand-crafted, de licious candy flower at every place setting. She is truly a creative and courageous woman. Sheis now a mom working and volunteering, giving back and making a difference. Our emcee for the evening, Glori Meldrum, Founder & Chair of Little Warriors, graced us with inspiration and hope that our women are dear to her as many of them are ones who missed getting help from their trauma and abuse as children. Mark Evans, our Chairman of the Board, began with the history of our organization and the need

for change and expansion. He informed our audience that addiction and trauma are at epidemic proportions and that change can happen. He shared, also, how Adeara is embarking on a bold new community expansion project in association with the Salvation Army and Par Foundation. The project, called Carus, will be able to serve up to 50 women and 20 children in the future, and more news will be coming down the pipe on this soon (check future newsletters to hear more!). We engaged with the talents of local marketing agency, g[squared] where Glori, Gary, Terry and Gennelle and their creative team assisted us in making our new identity, Adeara, become a reality. Terry Elkins, the C reative Director for g[squared], took the torch and shared the heart of Adeara’s new brand with the crowd. Their support of Adeara continues in new marketing avenues that will ensure and sustain future growth for us. The evening was then blessed with an inspiring prayer with grace shared by Pastor Carmen Lynn from Great Church.

thanks to the beautiful, brave women who shared how our program has impacted them, Amber, Danielle, Mavis and Tamara. Adeara would also like to thank and acknowledge Paul Doucette and his team for being great hosts and for an absolutely delicious meal enjoyed by all, and to our talented entertainment by Soap Box Duo, who shared their gift of music for the evening.

Glori Meldrum, Founder & Chair of Little Warriors

We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who continued to make our event one to remember. Adeara was proud of our team and volunteers who were working hard behind the scenes, and to Marleen Gray, our Program Director, and Bethany Zelent, our Communications Director for openly sharing and educating everyone about addiction and its challenges and influences. Also, special

For our architectural renderings, thank you to PGA Architects, Chris Laing and Jaco Erwee for putting some of our ideas into perspective, and to Nick Evans for graciously donating his time and talent to create for us our beautiful door, signed by many of the women we’ve served and the community who helps us to do our work (more opportunities to come!). This will be hung in our new facility for all to enjoy! And thank you to all the wonderful p eople and organizations in attendance at our gala. The difference you’ve made will help women and children in the days and weeks to come.

tales of hope

Testimonies of Growth Adeara has modeled what true recovery looks like, they’ve given me all the tools I need to survive the disease of addiction, along with outstanding supports within the staff. My spirituality has taken on new depths, where I’ve come to experience unconditional love so generously. My daughter is my most precious gift and, because of Adeara, she and I are reconciled through Christ. I am empowered, and now I can empower those around me with my newfound voice and the example of my new life. I am grateful for Adeara. –Mavis L. I learned the God is not an angry, vengeful, and judging man on a throne and that he does not cause bad things to happen when I sin. I learned that negativity doesn’t come from Him and, instead, comes from the devil and his demons. I learned that God is not like my Earthly father or the people who were a part of the church that hurt me. I learned that God is not out of reach but that He is everywhere and in everything. He is in every cell of every living and nonliving thing on and off this planet. That he doesn’t want religion, but He just wants a connection, a relationship with me. I have been shown situations that cannot be passed up as a coincidence. Thoughts that strike me as a revelation or “ah-ha” moment and it just makes sense. I now know that it's true that God is especially fond of everyone on this planet. He knows they are not sin, but they do sinful things. I learned how to look at others for who they are and not what they do. I listen to the voice that directs me toward good things, like hugging someone because I heard in my head to do so. I now trust in that small, still voice and, so far, it as not lead me astray. –Natasha K. Significant moment in my recovery would be moving to the next home. I was quite scared to move out of the Adeara centre because I didn’t truly believe or trust in myself if I could live a ‘normal life.’ I decided to stay there for as long as I could because of this fear. When the time came for me to move, I knew that it was the right time. It just felt right. Moving gave me the confidence in myself to live on my own, to continue being a great mom and to have healthy relationships by working on boundaries. It’s not scary at all being on my own and I love it. If you were to ask my 3 years ago if I’d be doing this, I would never have dreamed of it. I thank Adeara for it all. –Amber G.
