Welcome to the Team! We are pleased to announce Lori Patrick as the new Executive Director of Adeara. Lori comes to us with experience in Business Marketing and was most recently the Director of Women’s Ministry for the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, as well as the Director of Children’s Ministry for West Edmonton Christian Assembly. We are also pleased to welcome Stacey Bell as the new Director of Operations. Stacey comes to Adeara with a Risk- and Change-Management background, working with policies and procedures and bringing her experience from a legal and financial background. Both Lori and Stacey started at Adeara on January 14, 2019, and are looking forward to working with each other as well as the Adeara team as they take this organization where God has called us to be. We are confident that with the blended strengths of the new Executive Director, Director of Operations, and Director of Communications, together with our fantastic staff, we are going to see great success going forward.

Mark Evans, Chairman of the Board 2 | the forward

Lori Patrick - Executive Director Over the last thirty years, Lori has found herself in places she never expected, participating in opportunities she would never have dreamed of. Thirty years ago was when she met, married, and began a life of full-time ministry with her husband, Glenn. Together they have four daughters, two married and two still at home. In 1988, Lori and Glenn started out serving together in youth ministry at West Edmonton Christian Assembly. Ten years later, they transitioned into the lead role. Throughout their ministry, Lori developed her leadership through various roles, such as the Women’s Ministry Director for fourteen years for the PAOC Resource Centre, as well as

the Children’s Ministry Director for the last ten years at West Edmonton Christian Assembly. While her vocational training is through NAIT, Business Administration-Marketing, her heart has been shaped in ministry. Lori’s passion is people, and seeing them succeed and reach their full potential energizes her more than coffee! Welcome, Lori!

Stacey Bell - Director of Operations Stacey was born and raised in a Christian home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After high school, she attended Briercrest Bible College and Saskatoon Business College, and then she moved to Alberta to start her career as a paralegal in various law firms in Edmonton and Calgary. From there, she obtained a position of Risk Manager at Christian Credit Union, where she has worked for the past five years. Last October, Stacey attended our Evening of Dreams gala, and God used that encounter to open the door for her to become our Director of Operations. “I am so excited to see how God is working in the lives of Adeara clients, employees, and the Board, and I'm so thankful that I can be part of it as well.” Stacey and her husband, Troy, have been married for twenty five years and they have two daughters, ages eighteen and sixteen. They currently enjoy attending Gateway Alliance Church. Stacey is passionate about people—babies, kids, teens, women—and she loves pouring her life into others. Her favourite question when getting to know you is... "What energizes you?" Welcome Stacey! the forward | 3

a spotlight on...

2018 Christmas Appeal—Let's Build This Together It takes courage and a strong spirit to break the cycle of addiction, trauma, and abuse, and it takes generous and faithful supporters like you to keep us the centre of excellence in addiction recovery that we are.

Thank you, Wawanesa Insurance, for your generosity toward us, and to Tailor Made Insurance for connecting us. We are so grateful!

This past Christmas, our faithful donors once again blessed our socks off! Here are some of the highlights.

Our next big surprise was to hear that Hope City Church had donated the money we so desperately needed to repair our roof. That's phenomenal! They adopted us as their outreach project, and generously committed to raising $110,000 to fix the roof and balcony areas, and replace our railings. Roof repairs took place during the final weeks of 2018 and the first few weeks of 2019, and the roof looks AWESOME!

Wawanesa Insurance & Tailor Made Insurance Our first surprise was to hear that Wawanesa Insurance had donated $25,000 toward the renovation of our top floor facilities. That means that our counseling rooms, classrooms, living room, kitchen, dining facilities, and admin offices are all going to get a much-needed facelift. To show our gratitude, the fourth floor of our centre will be officially re-named the 'Wawanesa Floor.'

Hope City Church

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our friends at Hope City! We pray God's richest blessings on you, your members, and your bright future in the city! God bless you!

SPECIAL THANKS to the following organizations who have partnered with us on this project: Arrow Electrical Services Ltd Barcode Construction B Wright Drywall Inc Fineline Locksmithing Inc J Martin Metal Fabrication Ltd Phoenix Fence Corp Platinum Custom Framing Ltd PNV Painting & Cleaning Ritz Mechanical Services Shield Windows & Doors Ltd Sherwin Williams—34th Ave SureFire IT Solutions Inc Surreal Flooring Ltd West Point Roofing Inc

Independent Donations The highlight of our Christmas Appeal campaign was the incredible generosity expressed by each of our Adeara friends who rallied together and donated over $115,000! (Our bookkeeper, Barb, jumped for joy when she added up the totals.) Altogether, we met and exceeded our original goal of $250,000! We are overjoyed! Together, your gifts are helping us to... •

Put a new roof over the heads of our beautiful residents to keep out the snow and cold.

Upgrade paint and flooring in common areas, and freshen up private residences where our women and children live.

And provide essential furniture, like a cozy bed to sleep in or an armchair to read in together, bringing comfort and warmth to moms and children who are starting over and rebuilding their lives.

Thank you for your generosity and faithfulness to us!

FINAL RESULTS As often happens with renovations, we soon discovered other areas that needed urgent repair (i.e., damage to the roof was more extensive than we first thought, faulty plumbing had to be replaced, and water damage had to be repaired). That means, although we met our original goal, we still need to raise approximately $60,000 to complete this project. Would you consider partnering with us once again? tales of hope

Monique's Story - a poem If it weren’t for the Lord, I wouldn’t be here to tell you this story of hatred and fear. From a broken home, I came hurt and confused. “Was I to blame?" I hated being in this fallen world. That’s a lot to take in as a nine-year-old girl. Then in my teens, my mom married again. That’s when I learned to start hating men. He beat her and made her feel she was not a good wife. No wonder I hated the men in my life. That’s when I decided I needed to go. But would she survive? I didn’t know. I got a bit older and began to see that the same thing was happening to me. They used and abused me, but that was the norm. This is why my life looked so torn. I drank my way from the bottom to the top, but that wasn’t so; it’s just what I thought.

Then, in my thirties, I met a wonderful man who introduced me to crack… and so it began. This went on for eighteen years until I decided I had shed enough tears and was getting tired of the abuse and fear. I am in recovery now, seeking my true self. My life is no longer sitting on a shelf. I feel more powerful than I’ve ever felt. I am walking with the Lord now - He is my Guide, and I’ve never felt more peaceful, way down inside. This world can’t take Him away from me. As I look for Him, He is seeking me. The most beautiful Man there has ever been Has looked in my eyes and said, “Marry me.” So with no hesitation, I say, “Yes!” With this being said, you can only guess that the rest of my years will be the BEST! Monique, Adeara resident

Special Thanks - CIP Grant We want to extend a sincere thank you to the Alberta Government—Community Initiatives Program (CIP grant) for investing in Adeara this past year. Through their generous provision, we made much-needed enhancements to our programming, including life-skills development, employment readiness, and parenting courses, to name a few. The real beneficiaries of these improvements are our beautiful women who are making long-term strides toward health, wholeness, and independent living, and the communities that they live in. Thank you! 6 | tales of hope

And a Little Child shall lead them... Don't you just love when God speaks to our children?

Last year, on the occassion of her 8th birthday, Tessa Ferber announced to her parents that she wanted to bless the children at Adeara Recovery Centre. Tessa decided to take $200 of her own birthday money and donate it to the centre so that we could buy some new art supplies for our children. Instead of spending it on herself, she chose to sow into the lives of kids who really needed some love and encouragement. What a delight it was to watch the faces of these precious Adeara Kids light up as they came home from school and were met with an unexpected blessing. We had such fun watching as they explored their creativity! Thank you, Tessa, for blessing our Adeara Kids! You are a beautiful example of the generous heart of God and we love you!
