TRAVEL: CLARE VALLEY
I can see Clare-ly now
WORDS Millie Looker
There’s an abundance of beautiful small businesses in Clare, just waiting to be celebrated.
Watervale Hotel. Battunga Cottages. The Clare Valley is one of SA’s ‘must visit’ regions. Why? Because it’s overflowing with picturesque scenes, bountiful produce, award-winning wines and cosy accommodation. If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to take you on a tour of spots in Clare that we can’t stop thinking about…
WATERVALE
Battunga Cottages Our hearts are fluttering at the thought of staying in one of Battunga’s four self-contained cottages on a privately-owned property surrounded by rural landscapes. Two of these nineteenth-century-style cottages can host up to four guests, so you can hire them privately or fill each one with your friends for a 12 person getaway. Each cottage includes a separate living area, kitchenette, bathroom and wood fireplace, plus all the modern amenities. And on arrival, prepare to be wowed with brekky supplies from the best local producers — plus some extra treats! battungacottages.com.au @battungacottages
Watervale Hotel The multi-award-winning Watervale Hotel offers ethical, epicurean experiences that celebrate local and seasonal produce. Let your senses sing with their four different dining styles — there’s à la carte or a Feed Me menu featuring organic produce from Penobscot Farm; a Gourmet or Farm Feast with shared plates best enjoyed in a group; or a six-course degustation menu that can be matched with Clare Valley wines or mocktails. Fancy! You can also make a day of it by booking a signature experience like the Six Senses Penobscot Farm Tour or a full-day interactive cooking masterclass. watervalehotel.com.au | @watervalehotel
Billie Vintage Van Are you planning a wedding or big event in the glorious Clare Valley? You have to invite Billie along! AUBURN
Koonowla Winery With a historic homestead, glorious botanical gardens, vast lawns and a restored heritage winery, Koonowla in Auburn is one of the Clare Valley’s most picturesque settings. Bask in the sun on their cellar door patio or in the lush gardens with a glass of wine, and breathe in that fresh country air. Or, if you’ve got a wedding coming up, this pioneering property steeped in drama-filled history has also proven to be a sought after wedding location. koonowla.com | @koonowla
Paulett Wines.
CLARE
Knappstein Wines If wine is your drink of choice, you’ve got to pop Knappstein on your list of must-visit destinations. It’s one of the Clare Valley’s most popular wineries after all! Their medal-winning drops showcase quality fruit in its purest and most vibrant form, plus you’ll find them right in the heart of Clare in the original nineteenth-century Enterprise Brewery — a landmark of the town. Wander inside and enjoy a tasting any day of the week! knappstein.com.au | @knappsteinclare
Paulett Wines A delightful wine or two with a view? Yes, please! Paulett Wines is a familyowned, highly awarded winery making exceptional vino for all to enjoy. But the crown jewel is the Canapé and Wine Flight, where guests can enjoy five wines of choice, exquisitely matched with canapés prepared by Head Chef Thomas Erkelenz. And if you’re looking for a beautiful meal, the Bush DeVine Winery Restaurant menu changes seasonally and offers some uniquely Australian flavours — it’s a true celebration of local produce and quality wines. paulettwines.com.au | @paulett_wines
TRAVEL: CLARE VALLEY
Kirrihill Wines The Kirrihill team is busy in the valley, crafting fabulous wines for all to enjoy. Since their first vintage in 2000, Kirrihill Wines has collected over 500 accolades domestically and internationally, most recently being awarded the Best Shiraz in Australia and Best Clare Valley Riesling Winery. The secret to their success? They are passionate about their vineyards, the valley and love creating wines to drink and share. They don’t currently have a cellar door, but you don’t need to miss out — jump online to shop their drops. kirrihill.com.au | @kirrihillwines

TRAVEL: PINK LAKE TINY HOUSE
WORDS Em Worthington
A tiny house opposite a pink lake? Sounds like the stuff of fairytales, but it’s completely real and totally worth a stay!
Just 95 minutes from Adelaide, Pink Lake Tiny House is a cluster of three tiny houses in Lochiel, which make the ideal base to check out both the Clare Valley and Yorke Peninsula. At the heart of these unique, custom designed, ecofriendly houses is some big love for our Mama Earth and a treat for your eyes, as they’re perfectly situated overlooking the spectacular pink salt lake, Lake Bumbunga.
The tiny house phenomenon is all over our screens these days, and Michael and his wife Christina haven’t cut any corners in creating these cosy abodes. “It’s all been designed as an entirely eco-friendly accommodation experience with solar panels, a 5,000-litre rainwater tank, bio-composting toilets and a grey water system that waters plants. A stay here has a very low impact on the planet.”
With over 30 years’ experience in tourism, Michael and Christina added many thoughtful touches that make for a memorable stay. “We had everything custom-built using high-quality materials, so it’s well insulated, has reverse cycle air con, and we’ve used compact spaces cleverly. We also provide you with plenty of extras, including free wi-fi, a Bluetooth speaker, games, a hairdryer and even karaoke microphones. Our five-star reviews speak for themselves.” PICK A HOUSE, ANY HOUSE Tiny they may be, but your options are plentiful when you book a stay in one of the three houses on site — the original, Sakura, means Cherry Blossom and has a Japanese theme; the Peony house is designed as a modern (as large as you can build) tiny house with a queen bed made from applewood downstairs and a loft bedroom. Finally, there is the smallest studio-sized house called the Dandelion Retreat.
Choose from a two-day, one-night tour, where you can drink delicious vinos in Clare Valley one day; and soak up the spectacular coast of the Yorke Peninsula the next day. Book a self-drive, self-catering experience, or if you opt for a hosted experience, Michael will personally look after you with a welcome drink, butler services, a Korean barbecue dinner, a campfire and star talk (in winter).
“We cater for everyone, including babies right through to 98-year-olds, best friends, families, couples on a romantic getaway — we just want you to relax, connect, enjoy the tiny house and the incredible pink lake. It’s like nothing else!”
For a big adventure that leaves a small footprint, check out this unique accommodation in beautiful SA.
Mention this article for a free bottle of special purple wine during your stay. Direct bookings only.

Into the wild
WORDS Hayley Pearson Lions and sharks and koalas, oh my!

The land Monarto and the Adelaide Zoo have so many incredible experiences that will get your heart pumping and eyes smiling — just try and name a better zoo! Whether it’s a Giraffe Safari, Cheetah Experience, Meet the Rhinos Encounter, Meerkat Mingle or Keeper for a Day experience, you can be at one with these wild and wonderful animals. Some experiences The sea Imagine splashing in the ocean like a dolphin swimming in a pod. Wouldn’t that be insane? Temptation Sailing has added a brand new Front Swim Experience where dolphin lovers can lie down in a secure net and experience wild dolphins at an arm’s length as they playfully swim with their pod. You’ll also learn about these magical creatures from Temptation’s marine biologists who are there to educate and assist you throughout the whole experience. @temptationsailing

even combine two of our favourite things — lions and wine! You get to travel in luxury in a private helicopter over the Adelaide Hills and land in the heart of Monarto Zoo where you’ll enjoy Australia’s only 360 degree lion encounter and a delicious five-course menu, paired with wine at The Lane Vineyard.

TRAVEL: KANGAROO ISLAND
WORDS Hayley Pearson
It all starts with a ferry adventure… and it’s only up from there!
It’s South Australia’s holiday diamond and it sparkles with magnificent scenery, rugged coastlines, world-class beaches and plenty of natural wonders. Kangaroo Island is the perfect destination for singles, couples, retirees and families, and it’s worthy of so much more than just a weekend trip!
With a long list of accommodation options to choose from, you can flop and drop, and spend a few hard-earned days soaking up those island paradise feels. Then, when you're feeling revitalised, why not explore 4,400 square metres of nature’s paradise?
You’ll discover everything from long, sandy, protected beaches like Emu Bay and Vivonne Bay to amazing surf breaks like Pennington Bay, and little postcardperfect gems like Stokes Bay and Snellings Beach. The funny thing about Kangaroo Island is that despite its beaches being on the world stage, you can easily hop between them, sometimes without bumping into a single soul.
The island is massive, much bigger than you’d ever imagine, and you won't want to waste a minute of your exploring time — so having a car to jump between the beaches, cellar doors, distilleries, wildlife experiences and nature parks is essential.
And believe me, there’s a million reasons to holiday on Kangaroo Island — here are just a few… KI SEAFRONT HOLIDAY PARK Overlooking Hog Bay Beach, KI Seafront Holiday Park is the ideal place for a holiday. With a huge range of accommodation, including glamping, camping and caravanning, you can level up or down depending on your budget.
New to the park are five bell tents — they’re all spacious, beautifully decorated and set among a stunning nature-filled backdrop. It’s camping with a twist — you get to lap up those fun camping vibes, with all the conveniences and luxury of glamping! Every tent has its own deck, so you can settle in with a coffee or wine, and let the holiday-feels wash over you. You also get to enjoy the park’s barbecue area, laundry, amenities and communal fire pit. @seafrontholidaypark
KANGAROO ISLAND SPIRITS Exquisite gins and experiences where you won’t be able to wipe the gin off your face — Kangaroo Island Spirits (KIS) offers Garden Table experiences, cocktail masterclasses, blend your own gin and premium gin making experiences, just to name a few. Located in Cygnet River, KIS was South Australia's first boutique distillery, and they’ve been consistently producing great gins and liqueurs since 2006. Their cellar door is open seven days a week, so it’s definitely worth popping in. @kangarooislandspirits
Photo: Meaghan Coles.
COPPERSTONE KI With ten-out-of-ten views of Emu Bay from every room, this immaculately designed, luxurious holiday home is located on fiveand-a-half acres of private land, only a twominute walk from one of Kangaroo Island’s most popular stretches of coastline, Emu Bay Beach.
Sleeping up to eight people, Copperstone is ideal for families, or couples and friends wanting a kid-free weekend. It’s the picture perfect setting to laze and graze — so much so, I spent my fortieth birthday here, kicking back with a glass of Kangaroo Island Spirits in one hand and toasting a marshmallow in the other. With polished concrete floors, four bedrooms, a massive living area, open plan kitchen, and indoor and outdoor fireplaces, Copperstone KI is the whole package. @copperstoneki Kangaroo Island is more than just a weekend holiday. Stay for the long haul — it’s worth it!

After you settle into the five bedrooms, four ensuites, outdoor shower and bath with sea and bush views, you can have a wildlife nature experience. TRAVEL: JIM BARRY BOUTIQUE ACCOMMODATION
One in a mill
WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Wayne Pearson
Oh Jim Barry, you won our hearts with your wine, and now you’ve given our souls a place to unwind, too!
It’s no secret that Clare is a catch and one of the best destinations to road trip and discover exceptional Rieslings. So imagine the pure joy when we discovered that one of our fave wine producers had spread their wings and created not one, but two superb accommodations in the region!
Jim Barry Boutique Accommodation is the mastermind behind two of Clare’s shining stars — The Mill Apartments and the latest addition, Mill St. Retreat. Both sit just a stone’s throw from beautiful cellar doors, eateries and shops. If you can’t choose which is the perfect getaway for you, you could eeny-meeny-miny-moe it and we know you’ll be happy no matter where you end up! The Mill Apartments Located on the northern side of the main street in Clare, The Mill Apartments offer a relaxing and secluded place to base yourself in the Clare Valley. Here, you’ll find four one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom apartments — so whether you’re riding solo or spending a weekend with fam and friends, you’ll feel right at home. Each apartment includes a living and dining area, self-contained kitchen, bathroom with a soothing rain shower and full size bath, brekky provisions and even a bottle of Jim Barry vino to kick-start your stay in wine country.

Mill St. Retreat Think Palm Springs vibes in SA’s renowned wine region, and you’ve got the brand new Mill St. Retreat. The four one-bedroom apartments are uniquely decorated to complement the mid-century modern architecture; and while they each have their own twist, they all have one thing in common — absolute comfort and luxury.
With a complete kitchen facility and dining area, private deck, barbecue, modern bathroom, breakfast provisions, office space and private off-street parking, these apartments are suited to corporate travellers, couples or larger groups wishing to stay close together.
“We wanted to create a haven of absolute luxury for our guests so they could unwind and relax in comfort at the end of a day exploring the region,” says Peter Barry, owner of Jim Barry Boutique Accommodation.
TRAVEL: JIM BARRY BOUTIQUE ACCOMMODATION
Wine, forever This foray into accommodation is a big step for the Barry family, but never fear — they’re still proudly creating wines for all to enjoy! One of their latest ventures has tickled us pink — literally — as they’ve teamed up with the McGrath Foundation to create a special Rosé, raising funds for McGrath Breast Care Nurses.
The strong connection to this cause comes from third-generation winemaker Tom Barry’s wife, Olivia Hoffmann-Barry. Olivia’s father was a breast cancer surgeon for 35 years, and her mother, Anne Marie, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. “Our family has actively fundraised for breast cancer charities for years, but Mum's diagnosis made us think about how to raise money for thousands of Australian families navigating breast cancer by doing what we do so well every day — and that’s wine,” says Olivia.
Based on their popular Cabernet Sauvignon (The Cover Drive), the Rosé showcases a striking pink-striped capsule and label featuring a female cricketer — a fitting label for the McGrath Foundation. You can support the cause and sip this sentimental wine by purchasing a bottle from Dan Murphy's or online.
The next time you’re planning a Clare trip just two hours out of Adelaide, we can’t think of a reason not to give yourself a luxury stay and support a beautiful familyowned business at the same time!

FEEL GOOD: URTH CLAY STUDIO
WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Wayne Pearson
A hobby with a side of healing? Sign me up for a class at Urth Clay Studio in Goodwood or Burnside.
If you’ve ummed and ahhed about learning a new skill, take this as your sign to jump into pottery! There’s so much waiting in the art of clay.
Seven years ago, Zein Akkad took a difficult situation and turned it into a warm and welcoming space. “I experienced some mental health issues and during my healing process, I found that pottery was the most effective tool to help calm my mind,” she explains.
Being the good soul that she is, Zein started looking for signs of stress or struggle in her friends once she felt healthy again. “I invited each person to come and play with clay and it was the same result, over and over again — everyone would leave the session feeling relaxed and asking for more!”
Since then, Zein has worked with her talented team to design classes that give everyone a safe space to make a special little something for themselves. And the music to my ears? You don’t need an artistic background!
“There’s no judgement in our studios! We want each person to experiment, fail, learn from their mistakes and try again. We’ll guide you, but it’s up to you to make each piece your own. It’s mesmerising to hold a piece of clay and turn it into something you can use every day,” Zein says.
IT’S ALL IN THE TECHNIQUE “We use locally sourced clays with different textures, and we teach techniques from all around the world, like mocha diffusion, Russian painting and Japanese Kurinuki. Our techniques are simple and there’s no pressure — perfection doesn’t exist with pottery.”
GIVE BACK “As a proud environmentally-friendly pottery studio, we use a single firing method that saves 50 percent of the energy needed for each piece but has the same result — when you’re firing 3,500 pieces per year, it adds up! We also make it a priority to support mental health organisations by donating a percentage of our merchandise sales.”
WHAT TO BOOK Urth Clay Studios offers four different class types: • Social clay session – In just three hours, make a beautiful piece like a vase, mug or sushi set. • Mindful clay program – Learn multiple techniques over eight weeks. • Private events – Perfect for team building or special occasions — hello, hen’s parties! • Muddy membership – If you’ve got the pottery bug, this allows you to come and go as you please, with all materials and firing provided. • Gift voucher – The perfect gift for someone you love.

With a passion for our pets as big as our own, the team at EAC Animal Care has made it possible for us to naturally support the health and wellbeing of our fur babies.
We’re super excited about EAC’s products, which have been formulated holistically to support the immune system and digestive health of our dogs and cats. Basically, you can now take care of the health of your pets in the same natural way you like to take care of your own.
South Australian and family-owned, EAC Animal Care was established by brothers Luke, Nigel and Daniel Steinborner in collaboration with Immunologist Dr Danny Xue and Veterinarian Dr Lucas Oijen. Their vision was to come up with a preventative healthcare solution for pets that would address gut, joint, coat and other common concerns. You know the supplement section we all raid at the supermarket to keep our bodies fighting fit? It’s like that, but for your pets!
The brains behind EAC and loving owner of puppies Maize and Oscar, Luke highlights the importance the brand places on supporting the health of your pet friends and giving you peace of mind as owners.
Driven by the positive impact they can have on the health and wellbeing of our pups and kitties, all product development is led by a scientific team that includes an animal behaviourist and nutritionist. This means that they’ve taken the guesswork out of how to support your furry friends. “All ingredients used in EAC products are naturally formulated, holistic and supported by science,” Luke says.
Do you love smooching your pooch but their breath leaves you reeling? Or maybe your pup struggles with intestinal issues or allergies? Well, EAC's In-Sideout PreProbiotics can help! And for dogs and cats with stiff joints, the In-Fusion supplement helps to maintain joint lubrication and healthy cartilage so your loved ones can move freely.
Find their range of products in PETstock stores across SA, the stockists listed online or make it really easy and purchase directly from their website from the comfort of your own home. Use code ADELADY10 for 10 percent off all purchases until 31 July 2022. Now that’s super handy when you don’t want to disturb the pet that’s sleeping on your lap!
