The arts and science are often seen as opposite ends of a spectrum, but in reality, they are inextricably linked. We have always used the arts to tell stories about science and technology, to learn about new discoveries and to help us make sense of our world. So interlinked are the arts and science that the word ‘robot’ was first used in a play, Rossums’ Universal Robots by Karel Capek which premiered a 100 years ago in 1921! The Science at the Fringe Guide brings together all the shows and events which allow us to explore our world, perhaps even teach us something new but most of all will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. Artists from around the world are presenting shows in Adelaide on an eclectic range of topics including: the future of food; the secret sounds of plants; and even bettongs and their buddies. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore your own mind; experience the dreams of flight via VR or perhaps learn about the science on our streets. It is a delight to again collaborate with the Adelaide Fringe to bring you the Science in the Fringe Guide and the Science in the Fringe Award. Inspiring South Australia’s mission is to make science visible, and while we’re sure the shows and events in this guide are great entertainment, we hope some of them will make you think long after the show is over. Happy Fringe! Alison Kershaw Program Manager, Inspiring South Australia
Adelaide Fringe is excited to collaborate with Inspiring South Australia for the fifth year in producing the Science at the Fringe Guide. We have a jam-packed program with over 1,000 events across 350 venues, over 31 nights, making Adelaide Fringe the biggest festival in Australia! This guide is specially put together for those with an interest in science, listing over 40 events across a number of genres such as theatre, music, interactive, comedy, visual arts and design and even some children’s events for those young keen science enthusiasts. You are also able to search by our Science at the Fringe filter which is available on our website, making it even easier to find a show which interests you. Thanks to the Inspiring South Australia team who put this guide together each year. Heather Croall Director and CEO, Adelaide Fringe
