From the EDITOR

Dear Readers,

It was hard to pen down this editor's note, but somehow I managed to sneak out a few hours from a bustling family function event. For a family function, I'm in a place called Godda in Jharkhand. It's so nice to see how these old villages have changed into blossoming cities. I was expecting this place to be a very old-style village, but it turned out to be a place with entirely different hustle and bustle, with posh cars, sports bikes, huge houses, and quite efficient urban city life. I must say India is the place to be now and in the future. Who could imagine this place being completely digitalized on payments, with Amazon and Flipkart being their main sources of ordering things and Zomato and Swiggy being super active in the whole village, turning it into a city? I was expecting a village experience, but this turned out to be a complete mix of village and city life. I also spoke to many retired relatives and guests here and talked to all of them about their lives after retirement. All of them seemed to be in a different zone altogether. The cover story is based on the same subject, where we interviewed five retired profiles living in Hong Kong. Thanks to my very talented writer and friend Ritu Churiwala for doing this cover story, and a special mention to Jayaji Peesapathy, who let us interview five profiles from our retired persons welfare group, Jolly Good Maitrivan.

Up next is a question: Who all attended the Zakir Hussein Show recently held in Hong Kong? I'm sure over 80% of the socially active Indian community attended this show and were mesmerized by the performance by Zakir Sahab. Keeping someone engaged and entertained by singing and a live band is quite easy, but this man could hold back an audience of over 1200 with just two tablas and those magical fingers. I'm sure many of you'll be amazed by the performances before Zakir Hussein starts his magic. Let me introduce you to one person whose classical singing performance during the Zakir show was no less than that of any big star performing in Hong Kong. Mehdi Hasan Niazi, son of HK's classical singing maestro Ustad Siraj Niazi, was forced by my wife to be covered in our profile section for an interview, and he very humbly, as always, with a smiling face, said yes. Mehdi and his sister Haleema are those two people in Hong Kong whom I have known personally for many years, and these two siblings, along with their other musical gharana family, deserve the highest respect and gratitude from the entire Indian community of Hong Kong for putting together these fabulous shows in Hong Kong.

I would also like to share another interesting incident with my readers. Recently, I had a client from Poland who is originally from Turkey. During his office visit, he picked up a copy of A-Desiflava magazine, and the first thing he opened up was the Numerology and Horoscope section. I was astounded by the way he was readying all the pages for 10–15 minutes, and then he said, Wow, Gary, everything mentioned in the Horoscope and Numerology section is very interesting and accurate in terms of his personal predictions. I was very delighted and happy to hear this from a foreign reader.

I think now that my time is up, I have to go back inside and attend to some of my wife's close relatives and childhood friends in Godda. All the best to all my readers, and I thank each one of you for offering this support to A-Desiflava Magazine over so many years. A-Desiflava Magazine has become my pride label on my shoulder, and my wife and I are always welcoming everyone to come forward and engage, enlighten, and entertain our fellow Indians and South Asians through our magazine. So please feel free to connect with me any day, anytime.

Happy Reading.

A NEW CHAPTER LIFE AFTER RETIREMENT

Exploring different dimensions, looking through different perspectives, and experiencing what it is like to transition into the next phase of life!

Retirement marks a significant milestone in a person's life, transitioning from decades of structured work to a period of freedom, self-discovery, and new opportunities and redefining self-identity. While to some this may mean a period of exploration of new income avenues, reconnecting with family and grand-children, immersing themselves in social causes, rekindling long-lost hobbies, immersing themselves into religious activities or building groups and communities of their own; there are significant others who feel side-lined and lost. “Many retirees report a profound sense of loss as they transition from the structured life of work to the unstructured life of retirement. This often leads

to feelings of irrelevance and a perception that life is now playing in the background.”"The Retiree’s Guide to Mental Health" by Dr. John Doe.

We spoke to some of the retired professionals in Hong Kong to gather their perspective and try and understand this stage of one’s life better. A special mention here for Jaya Peesapaty, a Mentor at Resolve Foundation Hong Kong 2024 Fellowship for the theme "Adding Life to Years - Upholding Dignity in Aging" who spearheads Jolly Good Maitrivan, a community for the old and retired. This is a completely voluntary activity, involving no membership of any kind. She started this group 15 years back to find friends for her retired parents

when they came to visit her in Hong Kong. What started as an informal get-together over chai and biscuits between parents of friends, grew into a meaningful, activity led initiate where different organisations like HKUST started participating. Through this wonderful initiative Jaya found a way of giving back to the society in a meaningful and wholesome way.

The interviewees for the purpose of this article are all part of the Jolly good Maitrivan and come from different walks of life. They have worked in India or Hong Kong and have been very kind and enthusiastic about sharing their life experiences with us.

YOB: 1956

A retired private school teacher from Delhi, India

Q1: What do you miss most about your professional life, and why?

Ans: I miss the classroom setting where students are listening to me, giving me immense respect and endless affection. Seeing students learn and grow is a joy that can’t be expressed in words. Going out to picnic and excursions was definitely something I used to look forward to. Staff room gossip and friendship among fellow teachers is something I really miss.

Q2: How has your relationship with family and friends changed since retirement?

Ans: I was secondary school teacher for Hindi language and literature in Delhi, India. My son and daughter are living in Singapore and Melbourne respectively. Since I took retirement, I relocated to Singapore to be close to my son and his family. I helped them in the upbringing of my newly born granddaughter. As I become closer to my kids after retirement, my relationship with all of them has become stronger. I have more time to give them

and also enjoy cooking in my spare time.

Q3: In what ways has retirement allowed you to grow or change as a person?

Ans: Job as a teacher can be extremely hectic. There is so much to do at school and home- to prepare yearly syllabus, make question papers, answer sheet checking extra. After retirement, I joined yoga group, prayer group. I feel relaxed and a big change has come in my personality. I meet people from different communities and learn different things. My hobbies have widened and expanded because now I have the luxury of time. I especially enjoy learning new cuisines and cooking different things makes me happy!

Q4: Being a seasoned professional, you must have planned your retirement, financially as well as from the perspective of taking up hobbies/giving back to the society etc. Was there any unplanned challenges that you had to face? Something that you could not anticipate before, and realised much later that you should have factored this aspect in while planning your retirement?

Ans: There are two main unplanned challenges that I had to face. Firstly, after I took retirement, I moved to Singapore but within couple of years, my son relocated to Hong Kong and I wasn’t mentally ready for this change initially. But I took some time and came to Hong Kong with a positive mindset. Least did I know then, that I would enjoy here even more! Our society was very welcoming and friendly

and I settled in fairly quickly. Another challenge I faced was I did not plan good health insurance for myself and my kids when they were all healthy. By the time we realized we already had some pre conditions and it wasn’t easier to get coverage without shelling out extra money.

Q5: Describe your experience with JOLLY GOOD Maitrivan, How do you feel about the group? What activities do you enjoy?

Ans: It’s been a year since I joined JOLLY GOOD Maitrivan Group. We all feel the positive change since we joined and are very happy with this group activities. They come up with unique things each time like time to time health check-up, picnic, cooking classes, flower arrangement class, women’s day and mother’s day celebration and many more of such ideas that keeps us engaged in a good way. We meet people from different walks of life and various community in this group. I am excitedly waiting for next meet up every time. Thanks to Jaya Ji for all this!

Jagadish Mishra

YOB: 1952

Profession: Retired professor of Zoology, worked in Allahabad University, India

Also worked as a Principal at one of its affiliated colleges.

Q1. In what ways has retirement allowed you to grow or change as a person?

Ans: Having been free from any scheduled duty, I ignited myself with a fuel of wandering. This gives me energy to study and explore nature. Roaming around freely in the nature itself is a blessing and can teach one many things.

Q2: What brings you to Hong Kong? Do you like spending your time here?

Ans: My younger daughter Shreya, lives in Hong Kong in Lohas Park. I have visited Hong Kong multiple times since she started living in Hong Kong (2014). I can’t begin to express how this place is super-convenient for old and retired people. There is ample space to walk around. There is no fear from stray dogs etc. when one is out alone. There are groups and activities one can engage in. Back home a sense of lethargy over powers me. I hardly move out of my room, whereas I can easily walk for 12-14 kms at a stretch in Hong Kong. It is such a lovely, well-maintained place. I strongly recommend all the people in my circle to visit their once.

Q3: One principal you firmly believe in and has helped you throughout?

Ans: When I was at the beginning of my career, I read in a popular Hindi magazine in those days called Kadambini, that you must have the courage to lose everything you have in life and start a new day tomorrow. No matter how difficult life and its

circumstances are, there is always a possibility of a fresh start with each new day, with each new sunrise. This touched a chord with me and remained etched in my mind. It made my life anxiety free in a way. It taught me to take it easy in life, to live life on the spur of the moment, not plan excessively but enjoy life as it unfolds.

Q4: How should a young professional approach his/her work today, strike a balance between family and work today, to find fulfilment both personally and professionally when they retire.

Ans: I strongly believe in flexible in life. Don’t stick to set notions. You may stick to your job ( I worked in the same place all my life) but be flexible enough to live life as it comes to you, is my advice. The life goes on with rights and wrongs, ups and downs. The experience of learning comes to everyone by making mistakes. It helps every individual to navigate their own unique life-paths.

Q5: What activities or hobbies have you taken up since retiring, and how do they enrich your life?

Ans: No planned activities as such. I think one should care for one's own bodily health. It creates a win-win situation for the person himself / herself, his/her family and the country on a bigger scale. Health is truly wealth.

Ansuya Ganeriwal

YOB: 1956

Profession: Private school across India for about 30 years.

Q1: Do you feel age is just a number?

Ans: Yes, I do believe that age is just a number. I always think positive and motivate others to think positive and I make friends those who think positive too. I firmly believe,

(learning has no age). I have done my M.A. at the age of forty and B.Ed. at the age of fifty

Q2: What advice would you give to someone who is approaching retirement?

Ans: Retirement is the golden period of one’s life, I feel. I give them advice that use this golden period by doing some creative work, read books and be happy with family and friends. Enjoy the company of good things in life, do all the things you previously didn’t have time for.

Q3: Finally, how should a young professional approach his/her work today, strike a balance between family and work today, to find fulfilment both personally

and professionally when they retire.

Ans: Work is Worship (

) We should always have this in our mind . We should never take work as burden neither at home nor at office. We take up any professional role for our family, so we should keep balance between family and work. Last but not the least, we should respect work. It leads to both for a better result and helps us to achieve satisfaction in life.

Q4: Please say a few words about JOLLY GOOD Maitrivan, how do you find the activities conducted.by this group?

Ans: Jolly Good Maitrivan is a very good NGO. It is doing commendable work for senior citizens and social work at large for the benefit of the society. More such groups should be there everyone to bring active engagement and foster learning from peers and same age-group people.

Q5: What is the difference between retired like in Hong Kong vs India?

Ans: I haven’t spoken to many people here, but I love walking around the plaza close to our home in Discovery Bay, and observing people in general. I notice senior citizens here are active, even in their 80s or 90s. They take time to be outdoor and move around independently. The perspective here on life after retirement itself is very different. Back home, people often feel dejected or unmotivated, they feel they cannot do anything productive anymore. This has a domino effect and the society at large thinks in the same way. Here, by being part of different groups I have

learnt so much even at this age. Do you know, I learnt crocheting all by myself by watching YouTube, it was such a satisfying feeling, to put my crochet pieces around the house for décor!

Nisha Harjani

YOB: 1952

Profession: Retired Accounts

Assistant, worked for 27 years with the same organisation

Q1: What do you miss most about your professional life, and why? Do you stay connected with your former colleagues and professional community? If yes, how?

Ans: I miss being active and efficient. I loved to finish all the house work and be ready in time for my job which was not very near to my home. It felt good to move about as a working lady. I am in touch with some of my colleagues especially during festivals. It works both ways. They also put in effort to stay in touch with me. And yes, I am in touch with my late boss's wife and children mostly through WhatsApp and sometimes by phone call.

Q2: How has your relationship with family and friends changed since retirement?

Ans: Things have improved since retirement on a personal front. I could help more around the house and spend more time with my mother and my daughter. However, I also feel that by taking over the household chores I have made my mother more dependent on me rather than independent.

Q3: The body grows old but the mind is forever young. Or would you say after all these years a mental fatigue is bound to set in.

Ans: I totally agree that age is just a number. It is all in the mind. I am very much a kid at heart, I like to give love and get love. I am 71 years of age and quite healthy. Recently, I underwent a massive weight loss but I am recovering and happy now on the health front.

Q4: Finally, how should a young professional approach his/her work today, strike a balance between family and work today, to find fulfilment both personally and professionally when they retire.

Ans: My advice would be, the young today should not compete. This will help them come out of undue pressure and stress. Be yourself and do your best. Have priorities for family first, as family stands with us with no expectations. They love us unconditionally and will always help us when we approach them. Be honest with work and the responsibilities given to you. This mantra will help anyone achieve success both personally and professionally, leading to a sense of fulfilment in life.

Q5: How would you describe your association with JOLLY GOOD Maitrivan?

Jolly Good Maitrivan leaves no stone unturned to make us lively and encourage us to be happy in all situations. This group is led by hard-working people like Jayaji who strive to meet all the needs of various people, smilingly finding solutions for all the different issues they face.

Raghunath Sharma

Retired Civil servant

YOB: 1949

Q1: In what ways has retirement changed you as a person?

Ans: I have the leisure of time now. I ponder over old things, try to look after my health. Exercise regularly and eat mindfully. Go for walks. I didn’t have time for these things earlier.

Q2: Which hobbies or activities have you taken up after retirement?

Ans: I joined few volunteer groups like MES and Don Bosco Learning Centre for Ethnic Minority for Kids. Working as a volunteer gives me a sense of purpose and fulfilment. I makes my very happy to be able to do

something for others and give back to the society. I also enjoy watching sports, especially cricket. I love sports in general and fondly remember the days when I played football in college. I am deeply devotional too and often go to the temple to worship. All these things give me happiness and keeps me engaged.

Q3: What advice will you give to someone approaching retirement?

Ans:Plan ahead, at least a year before you must a detailed plan. Try to engage yourself in a variety of activities.

Q4: What are your views on organised activities and groups for senior citizens?

Ans: Yes, it’s a wonderful thing, like a breath of fresh air for senior citizens. A close family friend recommended that I join Jaya ji’s Jolly Good Maitrivan which is a senior citizen group for Indians. I am so glad I joined it, it keeps us entertained and we feel good about being there as a community.

Q5: Finally, what advice will you give to yound profesionals today?

Ans: Times are very different now. The things we practiced or experienced in our work life have changed with time. I feel young professionals today should focus on being financially stable and give quality time to friends and family. I mean stay away from social media and WhatsApp as much as possible and engage with people in-person. That will build strong bonds in the long run!

Speaking with all these seasoned professionals sharing their life learnings was such treasured experience for me. I could feel the popular book Ikigai come to life before me. All these individuals were so positive and full of purpose-the purpose to live life to the fullest!

Key insights I can draw their lives for the benefit of all the readers here:

1. Health is Wealth

One of the most significant insights from speaking to senior citizens is the paramount importance of health. Good health is often cited as the foundation for enjoying retirement. Physical well-being enables them to participate in various activities, pursue hobbies, and travel, contributing to a higher quality of life. Nutrition and exercise also play crucial roles. Engaging in regular physical activity, such as walking, or yoga, helps them maintain physical fitness and mental sharpness. Mental well-being is also equally important. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and staying socially connected are essential for preventing depression and anxiety, which can be prevalent in this stage of life.

2. It’s all about perspective

Retirement is a significant life change, and the way individuals perceive this transition can greatly influence their experience. A positive outlook can

transform retirement into a period of growth and opportunity. Embracing change and being flexible in expectations can lead to a more satisfying retirement. Viewing retirement as a chance to explore new interests rather than a loss of career identity is crucial here. At this stage of life, many people find joy in spiritual pursuits and community service, viewing retirement as a phase for giving back to the society through whatever means possible and a golden period of personal growth.

3. Being active is key

Engaging in regular physical exercise is critical for maintaining health and energy levels. This can include anything from gardening to participating in light sports or dance classes. In Hong Kong, retirees can often be spotted practicing tai chi in parks, which combines physical exercise with social interaction and provide deep mental relaxation. Keeping the mind active through reading, or learning new skills also helps greatly in preventing cognitive decline and keeps people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s intellectually stimulated. Even a simple morning or evening walk and take their quality of health to great heights!

4. Learning has no age

The belief that learning is a lifelong process can be powerful. Many people find joy

and fulfilment in continuing and pursuing new skills and knowledge. It helps keep them young at mind, provides agility of thought, keeps their challenged and occupied for all the good reasons.

5. Same age communities can take away loneliness

Joining clubs or groups based on shared interests fosters meaningful connections and friendships. Peer support groups like Jolly Good Maitrivan and NAAC TOUCH Sub centre in Tung Chung, Hong Kong Christian Services _ Support to Ethnic Elderly in Hong Kong, Mental Health Project Team of HKUST, Resolve Foundation Hong Kong provide a platform for sharing life experiences and coping strategies, enhancing emotional well-being. Senior citizens keenly look forward to such gatherings.

Hope this article motivates you to bring a positive change to the life of the elderly in your family and your neighbourhood!

If you know of more such groups or can volunteer for conducting activities for senior citizens or know a senior citizen in Hong Kong who would benefit from joining the Jolly Good Maitrivan community, please get in touch with rjjaya18@ gmail.com

MY TAKE ON LEGACY, PASSION AND EFFORT

Hasan Niazi

Meet the man behind Indian classical musical shows and events in Hong KongMehdi

Hong Kongers must still be reeling under the dazzle of the SAMMAAN 2024 - Ustad Zakir Hussain Live in Hong Kong concert last month. We try to relive and savor the delights of that Thursday evening in the fully packed Hong Kong City Hall by speaking at length with the man who diligently worked for a year to put this dream show for all music lovers in Hong Kong!

Mehdi Hasan Niazi live in concert singing to an enchanted audience
SAMMAAN 2024 Ustad Zakir Hussain Live in Hong Kong concert at a fully packed Hong Kong City Hall

A teacher by day, an artist by night, an event planner by passion and a musician and songwriter at heart- there are many sides to the very young and talented Mehdi Hasan Niazi. Son of the renowned musician and classical singer Ustad Ghulam Siraj Niazi, born and brought up in Hong Kong, Mehdi, who is in his early twenties personifies what legacy, talent, passion and hardwork can achieve together.

In this candid interview, we explore behind the scene action leading up to the grand event, the roadmap ahead and get to know Mr. Mehdi and his family’s relentless efforts over the years for keeping Indian classical music close to music lovers while horning budding music talent in Hong Kong.

Q If someone asked you to introduce yourself, how would you do it?

A I am a singer or rather Indian classical vocalist. Now in my early twenties,

I started my journey under the privileged tutelage of my father, Ustad Ghulam Siraj Niazi and my grandfather, late Ustad Ghulam Husain Khan who was one of the pioneering classical vocalists of India, when I was just 7 years old. I am forever grateful that I was born into the illustrious and renowned RampurSahaswan Gharana and had the opportunity to learn from many great artists from our gharana/family. I am also passionate about songwriting.

Q Tell us more about songwriting!

A I feel songwriting allows me to showcase my versatility, helps me to try different aspects of artistry, approach different genres of music from Ghazals to Bollywood commercials, it gives me great creative satisfaction. I would say, the credit really goes to my father for encouraging me to pursue the Indian classical genre to carry forward the family tradition while always motivating me to find my own footing in Hindi and English through songwriting.

Q Your journey as a singer or songwriter-which one would you choose and why?

A Songwriting came to me later in life (I mean out of the two decades of my life so far!). Singing is definitely more special! It comes from

a deep place of gratitude for what was bestowed upon me. Being surrounded by so many seasoned artists is an invaluable experience. Without an ounce of doubt, I am forever grateful to be born into privilege, blessed by so many artists in my kin.

Q How would you define Indian Classical Music to someone who knows nothing about it, or to a child growing up here?

A Most simply put, it’s the ABC of singing-the very foundation of singing!

Q Do you play any musical instrument?

A Well, I enjoy playing the Tanpura, Tabla, Harmonium, Sarangi, Swarmandal, Sitar and also a little bit of Keyboard.

Q Being born and brought up in Hong Kong, growing up away from India, how has being in touch with Indian music helped you?

A When you’re born into a traditional musical lineage you have no choice, I guess (laughs) I am blessed to carry the family name…eternally thankful! I have immense respect for our roots and where we come from, a deep instilled love and respect for our glorious Indian culture and roots. Whether here or in any part of the world, no matter where I am, my Indianness will always be a part of me and my art.

Q What is your first memory of organizing a largescale event in HK?

A Let me go down the memory lane a bit (chuckles). It was 2014, as a 13-year-old I saw it unfold in front of my eyes, that was such a special feeling! 2018 was when I first ventured into organizing a large-scale event in Hong Kong. It was for the legendary Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma’s concert. It was an absolutely unfathomable experience; I had always wanted to do this! Manifested this as a

child, really. But, had no idea about the sleepless nights and efforts that organizing an event like this requires. Once the event started, the stress was driven away by the glamor of it. It was my official dip into the river of events and one of our major concerts in Hong Kong.

Q Any artist who made you star struck?

A Who other than the living legend himself, who graced our 10th anniversary event! It was a lifelong dream of mine, to bring him to Hong Kong, I still need to pinch myself to believe we achieved the feat of brining the GOAT himself…Ustad Zakir Hussain Sahab! When I received him at the airport and shared cab space with him, his aura, grace, stature, personality, witnessing the incredible human he is, so accomplished yet so grounded and humble, it was definitely a start struck moment for me. The image of him hugging my 4-year-old nephew so lovingly and with so much warmth, it going be a special memory. He also signed a little Tabla for him, a treasured family souvenir!

Q How has sharing a common passion for music shaped your bond with your sister?

A Luckily, never had sibling rivalry and animosity, Haleema and Rashida, my elder sisters are commercial singers both in Hindi and English. Rashida, in fact, is ½ of a musical duo with her husband and my brother-in-law, Qihbad in English. They do shows globally, in Dubai, Belgium and Netherlands, each one of has their own distinct and respective identity and space in music.

Q Tell us more about your experience of organizing the Zakir Hussain show in Hong Kong!

A It was not a piece of cake, it had been a year

in the making, when we booked the Concert Hall for a weekday concert (Thursday) we were very apprehensive about people being at work, but we backed on the countless Indian fans plus ardent followers from other diasporas, on being there. After all, it would be a live performance from the living legend, the maestro himself! The day of the event dawned in a blink. The D-day was nerve-wrecking! We were sold out, 1500 seats all fully booked on a weekday! To top it I got at least 50 calls for tickets on the day of the concert, I wish I had the capacity to accommodate! It was a monumental achievement for us as music lovers and ofcourse as the organizers!

Montage from the SAMMAAN 2024, the highly successful and mesmerizing Classical Indian Music show in Hong Kong

Q What will be your standout memory from this event?

A (Thinks for a minute) It’s very difficult to choose but I would say, the day before the event the Consulate General of India organized a dinner reception at the Bharat Bhavan. It was such an honorable moment for all of us to be a part of it along with Zakir Hussain sahab. This one I’ll surely remember for a long, long time. The other, was definitely the exceptional standing ovation for 3 minutes as soon as Zakir Hussain ji was on stage, I have no words to describe it. All those 1500 plus people present can vouch for the mesmerizing moment that it was!

Q What’s next in the pipeline?

A We strongly believe in elevating aspiring artists. The main goal is to keep our culture and Indian classical music alive through legendary or upcoming budding artists. Another large-scale event like this might take some

time to come together but at OVO Events, which is our commercial events wing, cofounded by me and my two siblings- it’s was buzzing with something new. We did a blast of a Bollywood Night with Salman-Zaman earlier last year, and now new concert projects will be announced soon.

Q I understand your father trains budding singers and musicians in Hong Kong, can you elaborate on this please!

A My father, Siraj Niazi, a veteran and well-respected singer himself, launched our own academy in Hong Kong in TST (Ustad Ghulam Husain Khan Academy in the year 2022), established under PUMHKA. We train music enthusiasts there regardless of age on weekdays and Saturdays in a group class setting for a very nominal price. The intent is to make room and time for all budding artists, bring them together and give them the tools they need to grow and take the music with them where-ever they go!

Q Tell us more about PUMHKA-the charitable wing, how music has helped touch and transform the lives of the needy back home?

A Every concert we do annually or even our workshops, the majority of the revenue we generate goes into helping people struggling with education, healthcare, helping the under-privilege learn music. We serve them irrespective of any caste, creed, sex, religion. We serve human-to human.

Q If you had a chance, would you have chosen an alternative career, why or why not?

A Well, my day job is that of an Early childhood educator! I am employed as a NET (Native English Teacher)-teaching at a Kindergarten. My job gives me immense satisfaction, correlates with my values of playing a role in shaping the future of young children.

A class in progress at Ustad Ghulam Husain Khan Academy
The electrifying performances at SAMMAAN 2024

Q Where do you see yourself in the next 5 to years?

A I am aiming for the stars, my goal is to take both the wings of our organizations forward, scale our events, produce and put out more songs of mine! I have big dreams, the pursuit for excellence is what drives me always! On a personal front, maybe get married, maybe, who knows! (laughs!)

Q If you had to define what music means to you, you would say…

A Everything that I am really grateful for is because of music!

Q Other than Indian classical music, what other forms have had a profound influence on you?

A Ghazals have influenced me a lot. In commercial music or western music, I would say John Mayer, Justin Timberlake are my all-time favorites. In Bollywood, it’s extremely difficult to choose but Sonu Nigam and Hariharan have always stood out for me!

Q On a lighter note, if you were to sing duet with any of the music starts, who would it be?

A I would love to sing with Shreya Ghoshal or Sonu Nigam! Or Justin Timberlake or John Mayer. It would be a dream come true to share the stage space with my favorites!

Whether you have been living in Hong Kong for many years, or are new to this city of possibilities, if you are a budding musician and

LIVING HAPPINESS

The Right Way

Sister Usha is a Senior Raja Yoga practitioner, Motivational Speaker and Business Coach at the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre. She has been honoured with the “Global Order of Dignitaries” award. Recently, during her visit to Hong Kong, she conducted several interesting programs that included – “Sustaining The Sustainer” – a program for society transformation leaders, “A Way of Life from Shrimad Bhagwad Gita” –explaining the true meaning of the great epic – Gita – and how to benefit from it in our day-to-day life, “Holistic Success In Business Through Spirituality”.

Here are some glimpses and mindful outcomes from Sister Usha's event in Hong Kong.

A very important and influential aspect of our life which defines our way of living is hope and determination. Success in life is largely defined by these two powers. Very often we see a difficult situation which affects people so much that after that they no longer believe they can succeed. E.g. a very successful person suddenly falls ill or loses an important relative or experiences sudden financial losses at work. Such

time people are no longer as internally powerful to face life’s different negative events, which are on the rise.

Also, the power to control your thoughts, feelings and emotions is reducing and keeping them positive is becoming difficult for many. Of course, there are some who believe that life is all about ups and downs and also happiness and sorrow are both part of life. But, according to spiritual wisdom, experiencing sorrow is a sign of lack of inner strength and stability. Also, happiness is our natural state of mind, which we like and should experience all the time.

require to face these different

Happiness for some people today is based more on materialism and enjoying different mediums of science and technology in every sphere of life. Do you know that there are two sides to this type of happiness? When the going is good in life i.e. when there are no negative situations in your life, you feel you are on top of the world. Also, when there is even a little negative event like a disturbance at home or a little change in your health or if a friend no longer co-operates and talks well with you, then the same material mediums of science and technology

can no longer support you. You feel empty inside. This is the wrong foundation of happiness. On the other hand, true happiness is one which is based on your strengths and qualities and is permanent, even if life presents to you negative events once in a while, which is very common in our present day lives. Try finding one person who has only positive events in their life and you will not find a single person without some problem or the other.

Also, the world is in a way living on a false belief that happiness is increasing because of scientific

advancement or because of better medical facilities or because of more wealth. It seems it is but it is temporary. Aren’t there so many people in the world, in fact a large number of people, who are in pain and unhappy? The richest people, the most famous people, the most educated people and the most advanced people are today looking to spiritual wisdom and meditation to get relief from life’s problems. They also want to be free from the pressures that come in many cases, with being rich and famous and also successful in a materialistic way.

Happiness is a state of mind and not something based on external influences. E.g. you hear a great piece of news –you have got a promotion in your office. That feels very nice to hear and it gives you happiness. There is nothing wrong with that, but when our happiness starts becoming dependent on such events, that’s when the foundation of our happiness is a wrong one. After hearing a positive piece of news, after one day you are told that your favourite sports team has lost the final of a very famous tournament. You see your team losing and suddenly your happiness is

lost. So, enjoy the positive events but don’t think that life will not have its negative events ready to reduce your happiness, if your happiness stands on the wrong foundation.

So what is the right way to be happy? Enjoy everything that life has to offer – all the good things but don’t make your happiness dependent on them. Also, if you are truly and internally happy in this way, as per spiritual principles, then that once in a while negative event or that shocking accident on the road or a sudden loss of wealth will not disturb you either. Constant happiness comes by increasing one’s inner spiritual treasures like peace, love, wisdom and power and not from outside events. That does not mean outside events will not make you happy. They will, but you do not get controlled by their ups and downs, when they happen. Also, by increasing your treasures, you remain happy even when there is a negative situation in your life. That is living happiness the right way!

67 Minutes for Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, to the world, is a phenomenal father of South African and African nations; he is a man who championed peace among all human beings and sacrificed his personal life, spending a long time in prison to liberate the oppressed communities in South Africa. He was the man who stood at the forefront of the fights against racial, social, economic, and classist injustices. He was an antiapartheid revolutionary who was responsible for enabling my journey, an African female, being able to move to a country as beautiful and dynamic as Hong Kong. He is the man who understood how important it was to free people's hearts and souls to allow them to dream and live their lives with dignity, freedom, an understanding of humanism, and to fiercely follow personal dreams and aspirations.

Who is Nelson Mandela

Mandela was born in 1918 into the Thembu royal family in Mvezo, South Africa, a rural community in the Eastern Cape province. He studied law at the University of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand before working as a lawyer in Johannesburg. He joined the ANC in 1943 where he held many roles, a

significant role being a cofounder of Umkhonto we sizwe, which led a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government, at the time making him the most wanted man in South Africa, and ultimately led to his arrest and conviction as part of the Rivonia trial. Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years in a secluded and remote prison on 'Robben Island in Cape Town, along with other prisoners of the anti-apartheid struggle.

I remember being very young; around four years old; still living in Soweto (a township created for black people during the displacement caused by the 1913 and 1936 Native Trust and Land Act of South Africa), and hearing chanting and excitement from the people around the

house; for some reason, as young as I was, there was something incredibly different and imprinted in how February 11th, 1990, played out, that feeling will be forever remembered by all South Africans, a feeling like a positive earthquake Though I was young and don’t recall every detail, I experienced extraordinary excitement from everyone who visited my grandmother's house that day. Even at such a young age, I experienced a behavioral shift in how all the adults were behaving, ululating (African Chanting) in the streets; the sky was clear, and everyone seemed happy. My uncles, aunts, and parents were glued to the small TV screen, and something about the environment felt like something was about to happen, it was of course

the release of a great man, a leader, and a statesman who would lead the country into its first era of nonsegregation in a very long time.

Even after that day, it took much longer, actually not until I was a teenager did I understand the continued change, progression, hope, and general happiness in people due to that one iconic moment, and why I had felt an almost out-of-body experience.

Nelson Mandela’s life represents different life lessons for people around South Africa and the world at large. To this end, people still celebrate his birthday every year on July 18th, as a remarkable day officially recognized as 'Mandela International Day' by the United Nations General Assembly. To this day, many charitable initiatives are organized by different communities worldwide to honour his legacy. Events range from the biggest celebrations to events such as charity walks, donating books, and spending 67 minutes doing an 'act of kindness; the latter is how you can join in the celebrations whilst helping those in need.'

67 Minutes for Mandela

The 67 minutes of 'Acts of kindness' is a global campaign aimed at continuing to commemorate his life and sacrifices, with the number 67 representing the number of years Nelson Mandela spent working for social justice in South Africa.

Whilst the world has evolved based on our current challenges, a hope of creating a better future remains; what I know for sure is that the human spirit has the power to continue fighting for peace, equality, and fairness. It is through these random (or not-so-random) ‘Acts of kindness’ that we can continue to move forward and forge a path where one day we can arrive at a place of change for the entire human race.

Nelson Mandela has passed on the baton to us so we can make an impact, and to influence others to believe in change, my mother always reminds me that its through each person that we can instill those beliefs.

I have learned so much about his life, the sacrifices he made for humankind, and the life lessons of how to continue striving to become the best citizen and practice a certain amount of 'mindfulness' regarding how we embrace each other and our differences. It is a mark of true freedom to continue taking charge of the future and embracing the world. As a South African living in Hong Kong, I have had an incredible experience of transitioning from where I knew him as a South African

to understanding what he stands for as someone living in a global environment. His unwavering tenacity to create a world that provided 'choice' and freedom has surpassed anything I knew before, and through his lessons I continue to break boundaries for myself and hopefully for others.

His Story of love captured the world

I am proud to keep hearing so many amazing stories from the community of Hong Kong when they explain what they know him for and how they feel about his legacy and true human spirit. I remember a gentleman sharing a story about how he got to meet him and shake his hand at one of the events he attended while visiting London, he describes the moment as a genuine and truly inspiring experience., I also have heard so many stories about the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory, (inspired by a South African team that against all odds beat a New Zealand

team that was hailed as unbeatable with Jonah Lomu) and how that moment when he held the cup aloft was one of the most emotional and sensational moments in their lives. It was a moment where many people witnessed how sports can unite people. In Hong Kong, we all unite and celebrate our differences during the Rugby Sevens. I always take the opportunity to embrace the experience of attending a game to celebrate and enjoy the diverse and multicultural community that Hong Kong continues to create, and always take a moment of gratitude that his actions made this possible. Although I had never met him personally before his passing in 2013, I have met him through the opportunities he has made and the love and care he has summoned to the human spirit.

How to Celebrate Nelson Mandela in July

During July, especially on the 18th, I urge you to

commemorate him in your own space and time by doing something loving and caring for yourself and others. This could be a call to check on a loved one, send a loving message, take a walk, donate to a charitable organization in Hong Kong, or visit someone who needs that extra love and support (Just remember to incorporate the 67 in any way). By actively participating in Mandela Day, you are honoring his legacy and contributing to creating a better world for all.

Let us all be reminded of the human spirit that has the power to love and recreate a better future for all.

flexible spiritual self-care routines and dealing with toxic family members! Stress free holidays,

Answering

your burning questions about spirituality in everyday life.

It’s Michael from Sai Kung. Is it better to question everything about God or is it better to just accept that our little human minds will never understand God fully & why things happen the way they do, and be ok with not having all the answers?

Hi Michael, this is a brilliant question! It’s quite natural to have many questions during our soul journey and the human mind loves answers.

The journey with God requires faith and trust for many reasons. Miracles

Hi, I’m Rina from South Horizons. I will be spending a lot of time with extended family over the holidays. I am excited but I’m also worried about certain family members who compare and compete a lot. How do I keep myself feeling positive?

Hi Rina, it’s great that you will be spending time with your family, and I can understand how negative it can feel when family members start comparing or competing. The great thing is that you are already aware of what to

and infinite blessings are afforded to those who can connect deeply with God through positive and negative moments in their life.

“If we had all the answers, it may deny us the rewards of experiencing this journey and expanding ourselves.”

It may be great to have answers and some answers are available to us, but it’s even more powerful to trust and have faith in the greater source of energy that is God or our creator.

Many books talk about how the ego is the ultimate separation consciousness from God and our journey is truly about reconnecting with

expect before facing these situations.

The best thing to do before meeting with anyone who may trigger you emotionally is to be aware and have strong boundaries.

“Boundaries aren’t designed to change the behaviour of others (although that would be nice!), but they are more for changing how you are affected by the behaviour of others.”

There is no excuse for bad or inconsiderate behaviour, however, the first thing you can do to help yourself is to not take it personally. Comparing is a sign that the person doing it is unaware or is insecure within themselves.

that oneness. The journey would be irrelevant if we were handed all the answers. Sending you love and blessings on your journey.

Understanding this allows you to have compassion and not to take it personally. If you find that this behaviour is unbearable, you can remind yourself that you do not need to engage in these conversations and you are allowed to have clear boundaries. Limit your time and keep the conversation focussed back on them, ask ‘how does that make you feel?’.

Learning how to communicate with people who continuously push your boundaries is a great skill. Above all, remember to breathe and not react. Rather, respond mindfully and in an empowered manner which avoids going deeper into these comparisons.

Hi I’m Darsha from Tung Chung. I have recently started a hypnosis program to lose weight and eat clean foods. I know that it will be very hard to keep this up over the holidays, any tips to get through this?

Hi Darsha, congratulations on this life changing decision. Making this conscious choice to have better healthy habits is sure to be rewarding for many years to come. The holidays are well known for being very tempting with breaking our fitness regimes and clean eating habits.

However, it doesn’t need to be this way! The first thing you need to do is reprogram how you see holidays.

Many people associate the holidays with a time to just let go of all routines (including the ones that are very helpful to us, like clean eating!). Try to see this as a time when

Hi, it’s Tamara from Sai Wan Ho. The holidays are very hard because I need to see my exhusbands family and spend time with them, they tend to say very critical things about me, and I cannot stand it. How can I stay strong?

Hi Tamara, holidays can be a tricky time with families, especially when you are coparenting and the relationship with your ex in laws may be strained.

During these times it’s better to keep the focus on the children, as hard as that may be. Try not to strike up conversations with your ex-in laws about yourself or your personal life, as these could be targets for criticism.

By keeping the focus on the children, you are also

“The first thing to remember is that every behaviour is backed up by a belief.”

“It’s better to strengthen your mind and spirit through meditation, positive affirmations and emotional intelligence, so you learn how to respond, ignore or guide the conversations accordingly.”

displaying healthy boundaries as your only tie to your ex-in laws are the children. They really do not have a right to judge your own life or you at all.

If possible, you can also limit the time by arranging help with others if necessary. Remember that children are always watching and

observing, so as tempting as it may be to react to negativity, it ends up creating a worse environment for the children.

Above all, the holidays happen for a short time and we can do our best to get through them with grace and empowerment which your future self will thank you for.

you can exercise even more of your clean eating as a commitment to your new life and body.

You can also use this time to be creative and prepare your own clean snacks and treats that you can enjoy with your family while they are eating their own treats.

Your mindset will play a huge role in keeping you on track so make sure that you keep your intentions and goals in mind which will help motivate you to stick to your own clean eating goals and ignore the myth that holidays are the enemy of staying healthy!

Question 2:

Hello Mrs Metha, I am Nitin, a 37-year-old software engineer from Kwai Chung. and I am caught in the relentless grind of the tech industry. With a demanding job that requires constant upskilling and a family to support, I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders. My marriage is strained by late nights and the stress of balancing work with family time. My two young children crave my attention, but my energy is drained by the end of the day. The fear of losing my job due to rapid technological change haunts me, pushing me to work harder, often at the expense of my own health. My ambition clashes with my desire for a fulfilling family life, it is making me feel exhausted and conflicted. Please help me Mrs Metha ?

Dear Nitin,

Being ambitious is a good sign, but unhealthy ambition can disrupt your personal life and throw your work balance off for a sustained period of time.

Self-care offers various benefits to one's well–being. When one cares for one's body, one is more likely to feel energized and ready to face the day.

Please consider sharing a parenting role at home and get permission from the company to allow working from home. Talk this through with the children and get their input. I hope it works.

Stay happy with the family.

Question 3:

I am Priya aged 42 from Nepal. I am living in Kwun Tung , I am grappling with the sudden responsibility of caring for my aging parents. Having built a successful career in marketing, I find myself traveling between my home and my parents’ place, managing their medical appointments, finances, and daily needs. My own life seems to be on hold. My vibrant social life has dwindled, and my career progression feels stagnant.

I feel the emotional and physical toll of caregiving, coupled with the guilt of not being able to give my best to either my parents or my work.

The constant juggling act leaves me feeling overwhelmed and isolated, with little time for self-care. Which thing should I prioritize Mrs Metha ?

Dear Priya,

The turmoil of taking care of aging parents and balancing between work and social life can be rather hard and sometimes it seems there is a between battle guilt and fear. You are not the only one in this situation. If, you are struggling with decisions, contact social work department

in your vicinity they will be able to assist you. Have you considered elderly Home Care Centre? That may be a good option it may ease your burden. There are a number of elderly persons in Hong Kong and more than 1.45 million of them are staying in elderly home.

Question 4:

I am Raj from Tsim Sha Tsui and I am 35 years old. My wife and I have consistent arguments and fights, it seems like the charm that there once was has been dead for years now. Recently, there is a new join in our work who is very beautiful and caring. With time, we got close and I started to develop feelings for her. I am currently in an affair with her, I do not know what should I do . Should I leave my wife or should I leave my new girlfriend ? What should I do, please help

Dear Raj,

‘Look before you Leap’

Your new fond attraction maybe on the rebound or perhaps an infatuation.

Recall your happy days with your wife, revive your relationship with her, take her out for a date, and find out about trivial arguments which are causing resentment and keeping you apart. Once you have taken marriage vows, remember ceremonies are sacred. It is a relationship between a man and a woman.

What guarantee do you have that your girlfriend’s love will remain fresh forever?

‘A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.’

Question 5:

I am Sadia, a 28-year-old marketing professional living in Yuen Long, I am grappling with the complexities of a long-distance relationship. My partner, Ahsan, moved to another country for

a job opportunity, and the distance has strained our once-strong bond. Time zone differences and demanding work schedules make communication challenging, and I often feel lonely and disconnected. The uncertainty of when, or if, we will be able to live in the same place again casts a concern for our future. I am torn between my career ambitions and the desire to be with Ahsan, l am feeling emotionally conflicted and anxious about the sustainability of our relationship. Please tell me what should I do ?

Dear Sadia,

First, be grateful you have a partner who loves you. Due to his job commitment, he was compelled to move.

Right now, you are missing him, which is understandable. You have two options: one to accept the situation and get accustomed to it and deal with it. Second, you are young and career-orientated; search for jobs in the country your partner has moved to. You will probably be stepping into a new world and will be happy with your partner.

Good Luck!

Question 6:

I am Akash and I am a lawyer who is living in central, I am currently facing the painful process of divorce. After seven years of marriage, me and my wife whose name I will not disclose, have decided to part ways due to her cheating on me. She says she was drunk and has made a big mistake. She is asking me to forgive her but I cannot get myself to forgive her. The separation is taking a heavy toll on me emotionally The legal proceedings are contentious, and the division of assets is complicated. I am also struggling with the guilt and sadness of disrupting our children's lives. Because I think if I forgive her, they would not have to see their parents getting divorced. My once-

clear vision of the future is now clouded with uncertainty and doubt. I am finding myself questioning my decisions and grappling with did I take the right decision ? Please tell me what can I do in this situation ?

Dear Akash,

‘When an injury is deep, we never heal until we forgive.’

Although it is hard for you, you seem to understand the financial burden, legal proceedings and the toll it will take upon children; this could be more painful for you both and emotional distress to the children.

Infidelity is one of the most challenging problems. However, if you take time and think calmly you will envisage more clarity. Since your wife has admitted her mistake, try and mend your relationship. The healing process will give you insight into your decision of forgiveness. The relationship can survive and sometime the journey might actually result in better understanding, emotional intimacy and stronger relationship. Best wishes .
