INTRODUCTION

The course focuses on comparative concept formation based upon analysis of precedents and basic contextual appraisal and site exploration.

The project shall be structured to form simple exercises on a single functional space for 1-2 persons and will emphasize basic spatial organization, anthropometry and proportion, and functions in design themes and ideas.

Fundamental principles relating to function, form and space will also be emphasised while addressing design concepts, architectural functions and spatial organization. Design Project will focus on small simple structure with integrated knowledge of environmental science and construction.

Focus will be on the organization of internal furniture, fixtures, equipment and built-in elements, internal space functionality and thematic ambience besides a sense of context through a non-nature based setting. The application of simple detailing will test the understanding on structural integration. Part of the studio project will relate to and integrated with the requirement of construction technology course.


Fourth Year

This course focuses on aspects of the Design Process spanning design approaches and strategies, contextual analysis to quality of space for a small to medium-sized projects.

This couse is focused in designing a building project of medium complexity that represents public architecture and identify design constraints/problems that requires integrated solution which address the issues of site and context, social, behaviour and humanity, technical and environmental, economic and build-ability, client-architect relationship and other concerns without hindering the students’ creativity.

Design projects will further develop the ability in circulation and spatial resolution, relationship of indoor-outdoor spaces and site organization through exploration materials and technology. Projects are designed as to encourage the exploration of ideas/concept, identifying issues and suitable approaches through precedent studies to solve design problems. Projects will have elements of site context and involve site analysis and site planning, introducing students to aspects of circulation, relationship of indoor/outdoor and climatic consideration in design and encourage design to local context and community needs.

This exercise is the culmination of the students’ knowledge and experiences drawn from previous years and they are expected to have gathered adequate theoretical knowledge in architectural design, the process and influnce of technology. Students will work as independently as possible from the formulation of design brief to tackle/solve design issues.

Project 2

Participant will look for an object or specimen that represents the idea of nature. Then conduct a research on the bionic’s accompanied with drawings and models, to be translated onto an artifact.

Participants are required to examine a series of Master’s Architect works that reveal distinctive architectural theme and ideas.

Through further investigation, the specimen will be ‘your possession’ to be reassessed. The observation and analysis must be recorded precisely in showing the bionic’s geometries, surfaces, slight movement, the change of motion, the disposition of the ‘wings movement’ and etc. The artifact must potray creative and clarity adaptation of ideas through the development of drawings and series of models.

Examine how basic design principle influence a space design, as you become an avatar, looking through his/her eyes. Building related to theoretical position by these Master shall be ‘visited’ (virtually) in order to experience and recording of the site, space, form, ideas, effect, material. By the end of the phase you need to propose a two meter [200mm3] cube stand-alone activity space for these Master’s. Master selected : Thom Mayne

Project 3 The first part [A], a group work, you are required to search for a narrow ’place’ in-between buildings or any other potential void around the vicinity of Kuala Terengganu. MUHAMAD ADHA SALIM ( BSc Architecture )

You will walk the ’place’, as a peripatetic act, and the continuation of ‘the past’ and ‘the future’. In the second part [B], an individual work, implant an inhabitable unit for a single person that personifies the idea of a single living. The space could be for yourself or your iconic persona [may be reconfiguration or imaginative] or driven from your contextual subject. Ophiophagus Hannah ( King Cobra ). Detail study about the structure and movement of the King Cobra. The skeleton can be seen after the process of ‘unskin’ the King Cobra. Mock ups are made and lead to the final model. It is all about the repetition and layering of wooden stick to mimic the skeleton’s movement of King Cobra. The final model has its own pattern and texture after going through the design process.

41 Cooper Square by Thom Mayne. A study about form and space of the building by focussing on the basic geometry of the atrium. Keywords : facade, double curve, folding, atrium projection cut and panelization. Horizontal and diagonal pattern of the meshes allowed 75% of natural daylight in term of sustainability is one of the main criteria. Idea development comes from the solid shape of the main atrium. The shape of the atrium being rotated in certain degrees to create the form. All the pattern and texture create the skin for the space. The most important element of this building is the stair cut at the atrium that give scale and dimension to the design. One point perspective drawing become one of the methods to show the final design in the 2D and model making for the 3D presentation.

Tikar Mengkuang. The flexibility of Tikar Mengkuang becomes the main reason why it is being chosen as the program for this design. The space in between the building creates a void and only then the name parasite came out to tackle the site characteristic. After a lot of drawings and models are made, the final form takes place and create a new parasite building to the existing site. The idea of creating a parasite building without affecting the main function of the site by turning the box into a curvy shape. The programs consist of open deck area, resting area, working area and wet section. The user can use the space to promote Tikar Mengkuang to the local and tourist. The user also can use all the space with her possessions to express her character.

PROJECT BRIEF A field trip to Georgetown, Penang will be organized for academic exposure to the students as it has many attractive heritage shophouses, as well as 19th century mosques, temples, churches and colonial buildings. MUHAMAD ADHA SALIM ( BSc Architecture )

As part of observation of quality spaces and appreciation of the architectural scenery, students are expected to experience the participatory tourism. Students are then required to do sketches that depict their observation of the journey and discovery. This is to enhance their observation and drawing skills. These sketches will be composed into a sketch journal for submission.

Individual design task designing a function space for the tourist to experience the traditional crafts or trade and awareness of one’s surroundings with additional activities such resting and sleeping, or cleaning and cleansing; should be designed within a compact area of approximately 30 meter square (habitable spaces of two persons) and the materials of the main structure must be of timber. The understanding of timber construction must be shown clearly in the presentation drawings and the final model. In turn, human identification with a place presupposes that place have “character”, that is attributes which distinguish one place from another and which lead to a place its unique presence or genius loci.

A series of sketches are made during my studio trip to Georgetown, Penang. There is an artwork that becomes the main idea behind the design. This artwork, named ‘Little Girl in Blue’ that shows the concept of how the column support the main arc in every facade of historical building in Penang. Spaces being arranged according to the concept of load distribution. Main structure supported by other structure and distribute the load equally. Hierarchy of arrangement by interlocking the spaces. The structure that face the main road become octagon in shape to increase the angle of visibility. From the basic shape to complex form by using the gridline method. The material of timber beautifully enhanced the design. After all shape being mixed into one final form, horizontal floor becomes the starting point to divide the spaces and make it comfortable for the user. The plan consists of cafe, mini studio, mini library, graffiti area, a bedroom and a bathroom.

Students are required to examine a series of Master’s Architect works that reveal distinctive architectural themes and ideas on NATURAL contecxt.

This project is planned so that students should be able to understand and recognise the application of certain approach of design through readings and research, and also the application of an alternative approach in genarating design ideas, in this case is the SITE NATURAL ELEMENTS.

Presentation will include biography, design principles and one example of their project that represents the idea of nature. Examine how those basic design principle, the philosophy, ideas and concept derivation influence a space design of the choosen projects. Fisher House by Louis Isadore Kahn. This house becomes the inspiration of how a building merges into the nature. A process of measuring nature being conducted at Gua Tempurung, Perak. Focussing on sun orientation and wind flow, tracing the contour by the grid system on site, vegetation and shadow mapping. The relationship between the trees on site creates a unique shape together with up and down of the contour to become the solid form of the design. Gridline of the contour wrapped around the solid form to create the skin and final form of the design. This design is lifted from the ground to preserve nature and give calming effect to the user.

Surfer’s Retreat for Greg Noll. The site characteristics become the main factor for this design. This site located at Perhentian Island, Terengganu. Everything on site is unique because it follows the changing of the water tide. By manipulating the site characteristic, programs, and idea generator which is the water turbulence, this creates a dynamic design for the user. Site analysis being conducted and all the materials collected were analyzed at the studio. The spaces consist of workshop for surfboard making, bedroom and bathroom, place to eat according to the water tide, natural training ground, and a living room. Through synthesis, all the normal programs being improvised to become such a unique program. As an example, the user needs to paddled up from the first level to the next level instead of using staircases. The water body inside the building preserved the site naturally. This building merged with the site in every aspect of the design.

Environmental Site Study encompasing site topography ( include all man-made and natural surfaces ); mapping contours in the town area and more localised contours; identifying gaps or missing links in building elevations; section through streets and boundaries; etc.

Design the scheme to promote people’s interactivity, efficient flow of movement, goods and services.

Identifying green spaces and water bodies; building profiles; prevailing wind flow and turbulence; noise levels and sound contours and sound reflections; temperature and humidity; sun path and daylight; sunshade and visualisations; impact of sun angles and reflecting surfaces; lighting levels on the streets; etc.

Golden Valley, a place for the gold and art lover. Two artists will display their artwork for the exhibition. Both artists are young jewelry designer. This place has a gold factory, gallery, children’s playground, cafe, courtyard and exhibition centre. This building shows the symbol of wealth and prosperity, also as an iconic building in Perak. The idea is to celebrate the community to participate in the programs that being offered without any hesitation.

The interaction between local and tourist at this building will revive this dead town. Critical thinking through the process of reviving this town and make this building as the main attraction to the community. The x and y axis of the site become the anchor for the design. The centralised courtyard with the water element will be the public space for the visitors to enjoy the sunlight and have a good sensation.

Practical Training PRACTICAL TRAINING : AAR630 is a course for all Third Year - Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Universiti Teknologi MARA - students that require them to work in a qualified architectural firm. MUHAMAD ADHA SALIM ( BSc Architecture )

This is a one (1) parts training course, which begins during each of their Semester 06. The training period is as follows: 2 February – 31 July 2015. The main objectives of the training require students to: i. Understand and be exposed to the architectural practice ii. Acquire skills/ knowledge of the practice and participate in the working environment of the firm iii. Develop a sense of awareness and responsibility by understanding the organization, function, and rules/regulation of the firm/practice.

Co-housing is an intentional community of private homes clustered around shared space. Each attached or single family home has traditional amenities, including a private kitchen. Shared spaces typically feature a common house, which may include a large kitchen and dining area, laundry, and recreational spaces. Shared outdoor space may include parking, walkways, open space, and gardens. Households have independent incomes and private lives, but neighbors collaboratively plan and manage community activities and shared spaces. Community activities feature regularly-scheduled shared meals, meetings, and workdays. Neighbors gather for parties, games, movies, or other events. Cohousing makes it easy to form clubs, organize child and elder care, and carpool. Cohousing facilitates interaction among neighbors for social and practical benefits, economic and environmental benefits.

Neighbors commit to being part of a community for everyone’s mutual benefit. Cohousing cultivates a culture of sharing and caring. Design features and neighborhood size (typically 20-40 homes) promote frequent interaction and close relationships. Cohousing neighborhoods are designed for privacy as well as community. Residents balance privacy and community by choosing their own level of engagement. Cohousing communities support residents in actualizing shared values. Cohousing communities typically adopt green approaches to living. Because each cohousing community is planned in its context, a key feature of this model is its flexibility to the needs and values of its residents and the characteristics of the site.

Quantization is the process of transition from a classical understanding to a newer understanding. This site located at Seksyen 13, Shah Alam and facing the Damanssara River. This co housing will cater for the musician resident. The idea generator is digital modulation and the goal for this modulation is to squeeze as much interaction into the least amount of space possible. The design scheme aims to maximize the interaction between resident, and also increase the views and wind flow. The concept of sharing a green courtyard within the community and create their own inner courtyard at each and every housing unit is important as the center of attraction for the community.

PROJECT BRIEF The Lumut Naval Museum is a living museum where everyone can come together to explore, engage and experience.

It is a place that would offer a variety of land and water activities and experiences, namely in categories of educational, recreational, social and commercial. To revive and promote the rich historical significance of Lumut Naval Museum particularly and Malaysia generally. To create a dimension in human experiences whereby one walks back into corridors of time and experiences the day of their forefathers. To provide sort of miniature or model whereby one can really knows and understand Lumut Naval Museum within a short period of time, which at present is inadequate and insufficient location and displayed.

To educate the people with the sense of awareness and respect for the past and present environment. The Lumut Naval Museum should have a total floor area not exceeding 2,500 square metres. The main components of the Lumut Naval Museum are educational, recreational, social and commercial.

Introducing the Royal Malaysian Navy to the public. The idea of the programs is to create a journey to educate the visitor about the importance of the Navy for our country. The characteristic of the site creates three main axis. The first axis for the tourist, the second one for the public and the third one for the local. All the axis mainly to celebrate all the visitors from each different background to submerge into the building and enjoy all the programs that were completely designed for them. The abstraction of the crystal (black tourmaline) born from the idea of how this building will become as some sort of awakening to the visitor in order to realise how grateful are themselves to be part of the citizen in a peaceful country. Some vocabulary are chosen to represent the characteristics of the crystal and a series of drawings and models are produced to shape the building and develop the ideas continuously. Idea developments are being set to some limitation to keep it on track.

The intention is to welcome all the visitors into every single entrance that emerged from an empty land into a welcoming architecture. This building is open to public until the first floor and become semi public from the second to the third floor. Water elements are placed within the building and to the open sea. An open ramp toward the cafe can become the center of interaction between the people from the outside to the inside or vise versa. This building has also become an iconic building to the city of Lumut that famous as The City of Royal Navy.
