TONI PALZER
SET YOUR OWN
TO SKI-MOUNTAINEERING VICE WORLD CHAMPION AND MOUNTAIN RUNNING GERMAN CHAMPION ANTON PALZER, THE PHRASE ‘THE SKY’S THE LIMIT’ COULDN’T BE MORE LITERAL.
Few teenagers reach the dizzying heights of elite ski-mountaineering. Fewer still go on to compete against the best seniors in the world. But, after proving himself one of the best junior ski-mountaineers in the sport’s history, Anton ‘Toni’ Palzer has gone on to race in multiple world championships against men many years his senior, bringing home silverware in the process. At 24, there’s little wonder it’s his name on the lips of mountain-sport enthusiasts across Europe.
HOMETOWN: BERCHTESGADEN, GERMANY But then, when you’re born under the shadow of a mountain, chances are you’re going to take well to mountain sports. Toni was raised at the base of the Watzmann Peak in the Bavarian Alps, Germany, and made its near 2000ft ascent his playground, strapping on his first pair of alpine skis at the age of three.
6
It’s no exaggeration to say the sport is in his DNA. “My parents spent a lot of time with me in the mountains,” Toni says. “My dad was the first German champion in ski-mountaineering and often took me into the mountains for fun.”
DAT E O F B I RT H : 1 1 TH M A R C H 1 9 9 3
Fun can certainly start you on your sporting journey, and get you to a point where you can begin taking it seriously, but it’s hard work that paves your way to the top. “I train 25-30 hours each week,” he says. “Skiing in winter, of course. But also trail running, mountain biking, climbing, swimming. I just love being in the mountains.” That mindset led to Toni making a mark on the mountain running circuit as well as ski-mountaineering, clinching medals in major running events in both 2012 and 2013. Not bad considering it’s his summer hobby.
“I JUST LOVE BEING IN THE MOUNTAINS.”
F I N D I N G Y O U R F LO W The benefits of all this training aren’t simply physical. Throwing yourself into a variety of disciplines gives you the mental boost needed to rub shoulders with, and indeed brush past, other elite athletes. “It’s important for me to train a lot, to know I am in good shape,” Toni says. “Then I’m not as nervous before a competition. I can focus. I can find my flow.” He believes that being able to completely lose yourself in each moment of a race is what makes the difference between a good performance and a great one. You need unyielding focus. Confidence in your preparation. Belief in your team. And on the rock face or a downhill ski, on the bike or on a trail, knowing your gear won’t let you down is as integral to your sport as turning up.
7
“Gear is one of the most important things,” says Toni. “Especially in the uphills, where you have to wear very light equipment.” That’s why, during his training ascents, Toni turns to both the Terrex Skyclimb Fleece Jacket and Terrex Agravic Down Jacket. While offering superior protection against the elements, these jackets are lightweight and easily packable. “Anything too heavy will stop you from being able to push yourself hard enough,” Toni says. And in the mountains, that can be disastrous.
C A R V I N G A PAT H With reliable kit comes a free mind. And with a free mind comes the ability to create. Up in the mountains, this means being open to ever-changing scenarios. Adapting and thriving. Mastering the elements. For athletes like Toni, to be a creator is to always be pushing yourself to try something new, to never look at the obvious route from A to B – rather to carve your own path.
“When I’m in the mountains near my home, I don’t follow regular trails,” he says. “I always look for new routes, new runs, new climbs – I want to create my own. It’s great to know, when you’re somewhere new, you’re the first one to go there, to run there.” To Toni, exploration and being a creator are one and the same. “Finding your flow and being creative require you to be relaxed as well,” Toni says. That means different things to different people. Perhaps it’s always making room for down time. Maybe it’s knowing when to loosen the rules and celebrate (“After a victory, I like to party and drink beer,” Toni says). It could even simply be surrounding yourself with the right people. “It’s important for me to spend time at home before competitions – with my friends, my family. I relax. I sleep well. Then I can be more focused.”
“I ALWAYS LOOK FOR NEW ROUTES, NEW RUNS, NEW CLIMBS – I WANT TO CREATE MY OWN.”
Indeed, balance is something elite athletes often lack the most. “Last winter, I had problems with my health because I trained too much,” Toni says. “My goals were too big for my body. I am human, not a machine. So now I always listen to my body.” To do the same could elevate your performance in your own sport. “Regeneration is very important. In my opinion, too many athletes train hard without enough rest. It’s important to go swimming, to unwind, to give your body what it needs to work harder next time.”

The placements of these fabrics make a perfect lightweight versatile piece for fast forward mountain sports activities.
KEEPING IT PERSONAL Training has gotten Toni to where he is today. But it’s laser-focused introspection that’s taking him to the next level. “That’s my personal kind of flow,” he says. “During the race, I don’t think too much. I do what I can to push my body. I look to the other athletes to push myself. But I focus on what’s in front of me. Always. It’s about finding the perfect situation for yourself, when you’re not going too hard or too light. It’s very personal.” So what can the young man born at the bottom of a mountain teach you while he’s on his way to the top? Start by just getting out there. “You have to spend so much time in the mountains,” Toni says. “But first, do it without any pressure. No competitions. No races. Just go for fun.
“BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, MAKE IT YOUR PASSION.” “Then, the best way is to take it step by step. Spend your holidays in the mountains. Go trail running, mountain biking, just do something. Then if it’s fun, maybe you can try competitions or races.” Sound advice for anyone who wants to test themselves against the high places. But Toni’s parting wisdom brings everything back down to earth. “The most important thing? Do it with your friends. Enjoy yourself. Love the hills. Be in good company.” It’s his youthful enjoyment of the sport that spurs him on. He’s younger than most, sure. But with this mindset, that’s an advantage. “Before anything else, make it your passion.”

HOW ONE MAN’S CONNECTION TO THE OUTDOORS INSPIRED A CAREER IN PRODUCT INNOVATION.
For Christian Zwinger, design director for adidas TERREX footwear, work is not just an occupation, but an extension of a passion. We caught up with him to discuss how his love of mountain biking shaped his career path and inspired some of the most cutting-edge products in the industry. When did you first discover mountain biking? Everything started when I was 15. It took time before mountain bikes as we know them today were available, and as I saw the first ones it was a complete buzz for me. Back then there was no bike trail information or no routes that were already connected, so everything was a big adventure. How did this influence your professional career? I studied design in Graz and I continued biking there. I also ran trails to help train for ski mountaineering. From university, I went to adidas and initially worked on running. Eventually my boss asked me if I would take over the responsibility for outdoor footwear, and for sure I said yes.
“WORK IS NOT JUST AN OCCUPATION, BUT AN EXTENSION OF A PASSION” CHRISTIAN ZWINGER Design Director of adidas outdoor footwear
12
Where do you gain inspiration for products? The most meaningful ideas actually come when you’re outside. Nature and outdoor sports are so inspiring. Take the collaboration with Continental as an example. That came out of an experience we had at the bike park. I was waiting for my friends on the side of a trail and you could actually see all the riders bumping over this rock and hear how hard the impact was. There’s this immediate feeling that a mountain bike tyre is not doing something different from a trail running shoe. And the connection was very clear. How did the collaboration evolve from this moment? We discovered the innovation team had previous contact with Continental so we reached out to their connections. The first time we visited Continental to check out the rubber profile we just knew we had to collaborate. The tyre shared many of the properties we were looking for in a shoe - rubber which gives you a lot of rebound and is very dynamic over short contact times.
You’ve also helped Continental design a mountain bike tyre? Yes, because everyone is so into outdoor sports we are always pushing each other to come up with new ideas. One day, the Continental guys decided they wanted to turn the whole creative process upside down. To be honest, we didn’t think tyre design was going to be too hard, but believe me it is crazy. All the physical parameters you need to know. How many edges you need, how a tyre needs to behave on clay, on curves, it’s a crazy portfolio of knowledge. But this lifted the collaboration to a whole new level. It really deepened our insight.
13
And the TERREX CMTK trail-running shoe was born out of this project? Exactly. We designed the two products together and the lug profile is identical in each. Like the tyre, the shoe is an all-rounder. What this product does is give you the right amount of cushioning across a great range of surfaces. It can run on a lot of different grounds and you know the grip is going to hold. This enables the user to be free in the mind and create in the moment.

SUSTAINABILITY ISN’T JUST ABOUT PERFORMANCE. IT’S DOING WHAT’S RIGHT. BY INCLUDING MORE ECO-FRIENDLY ELEMENTS INTO PRODUCTS, ADIDAS OFFERS SUSTAINABILITY YOU CAN WEAR. S AV I N G WAT E R Water is life, yet for too long we’ve acted without enough regard to the health and sustainability of our rivers and oceans. Through a commitment to water efficiency, quality, and accessibility, adidas is channeling a new way forward. By 2020, adidas will achieve 20% water savings with strategic suppliers, 35% water savings per employee at our own sites, and 50% savings at apparel material suppliers. Our commitment doesn’t stop there. We are constantly imagining new solutions to save and provide even more clean water to our communities.

Oceans inspire the imagination, and bring joy to the soul. Over 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by ocean. At least 97% of all water on earth is in the ocean, and 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by marine plants. Protecting the ocean means protecting life itself, and our planet’s future.
Nearly every person on the planet uses cotton every day. The Better Cotton Initiative’s mission is to make cotton production more sustainable while also promoting fair working conditions. In 2016, adidas exceeded its own expectations by achieving 68% of its Better Cotton Initiative. At this pace, we will reach our goal of sourcing 100% sustainable cotton by 2018.

8 MILLION TONS OF PLASTIC ARE DUMPED INTO OCEANS EVERY YEAR. LET’S PREVENT THE PROBLEM FROM BECOMING WORSE. ENTER THE NEXT ECO-INNOVATION FROM ADIDAS AND PARLEY.
TERREX BOAT PARLEY DLX
PERFORMANCE WITH PURPOSE Many plastic products that we use end up in the oceans. The greatest challenges, however, are often the greatest opportunities disguised. This is why adidas partners with Parley for the Oceans, a network of activists, brands, NGOs and environmental professionals, dedicated to raising awareness about the beauty and fragility of the oceans. We are working with Parley to transform plastic pollution into high performance sportswear by recycling plastic that is collected on shorelines and in coastal areas, to make new products. By collecting plastic we are preventing this plastic waste from entering the ocean. Spinning the problem into a solution. This is performance with purpose.
TERREX PARLEY LONGSLEEVE
PA R L E Y A . I . R . The Parley A.I.R. strategy encourages us to: Avoid plastic wherever possible; Intercept plastic waste; and Redesign the plastic economy. We’ve embraced these tenets through a commitment of using no plastic retail bags, or microbe-ads, and working to decrease our use of virgin plastic. We’re already making products using plastic collected on shorelines and coastal areas, and we’re driving eco-innovation around new materials, methods, and mindsets that will build a better future.

THE
TO RECOVERY
MAYAN SMITH-GOBAT
HOMETOWN: CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND
THROUGHOUT HER CAREER, MAYAN SMITH-GOBAT HAS SUFFERED HER FAIR SHARE OF SETBACKS. BUT TO HER, FAILURE IS JUST ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS SUCCESS. Dedication and determination. For Mayan Smith-Gobat, these two attributes have been the driving force behind her becoming one of the most respected people in climbing.
But Mayan’s career hasn’t been a simple rise to the top, it has been shaped by setbacks as well as successes. Injuries, bad weather, and mental blocks have all hindered her progress in the past, but Mayan doesn’t believe in quitting.
UPS, DOWNS AND UPS “My climbing career has been over 90% failure for the few moments of success,” she admits. “Definitely the most difficult points in my career have been injuries and I’ve had my fair share of them, but the more time I spend trying and failing on something the better success feels in the end.” Mayan’s current challenge is Riders of the Storm - a 2800m wall situated within the Torres del Paine range of Patagonian Chile. Her first attempt was in 2016, and was the culmination of months of rehab and recovery following shoulder surgery.
20
PASSION: CLIMBING
Alongside Ines Papert, she set out to free climb the entire route - something which had never been done before. Having found a five-pitch variation to get round the notorious iced-up cracks near the top of the route, the pair made significant progress towards their goal before bad weather stopped them achieving their final two pitches.
STO R M I N G T H R O U G H Mayan later required another round of surgery which resulted in three-and-a-half months of rehab. To recover properly, she had to draw on all the mental resilience she’s accumulated from over a decade at the top of the sport. “Determination is an inherent part of me. If I get something in my head, I don’t give up on it until I succeed. There’s no room for giving up, you just keep going.” Just keep going is exactly what she did. A second trip to Riders was within her sights but again, adverse weather conditions stopped Mayan from achieving her dream. “It took a month to climb the first 600m which should have taken two days, At the end of the trip we only really had two days to try those hard pitches. We had one attempt each and we made really good progress.” “You could say that trip was an entire failure but we came back safe and made good progress and by the end of the trip we were both motivated to go back and finish it. It was a very tough trip mentally but we’re both motivated to go back.”
CLIMB UP AND HAVE FUN
TORRES DEL PAINE
Looking back, what life lessons have you learned throughout your career, but also the phases of ups and downs? “When I was younger, one of my biggest mistakes was putting too much pressure on myself. Wanting it so badly you’re actually standing in your own way. At some point, I’ve learned just to have fun while climbing. It was a game changer for me that has helped me to improve and embrace whatever encounters.”
22
“CLIMBING HAS FORMED ME AS A PERSON. I USED TO BE QUITE A SHY GIRL BACK IN SCHOOL. IT WAS WHEN I DISCOVERED CLIMBING THAT I REALLY DISCOVERED MY INSTINCTS.”
DAT E O F B I RT H : 3 OCTOBER 1979 Mayan’s ability to overcome adversity has been a major thread in her career. But it’s also her ability to learn from her mistakes that has characterised her ascent to the top of the sport. “What was pretty major for me, was letting go of my desire to climb and learning to let my body flow. It’s that feeling you get when you’re brain is totally present but not active.
PROJECT OF A LIFETIME Looking to the future, Mayan is more determined than ever to finish what she’s started at Riders. It’s been a project which has made her draw on all her climbing experience. And brought out everything she’s become through the sport. “It taught me to trust myself and believe in myself, and I guess that’s through a lot of trying and failing, and then going back and trying again.” TO FIND OUT MORE: www.adidas.com/Push-your-limits-Mayan-Smith-Gobat
This resilience has defined Mayan over the last decade, and shows no signs of wavering as she enters the next chapter of her career.

GHOST TEAM
ENDURING
THE GHOST FACTORY RACING TEAM IS ON AN UPWARD TRAJECTORY AND SHOWS NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN. THEIR APPROACH TO CREATIVITY WILL HELP YOU FIND FLOW IN YOUR OWN SPORT.
While comprising some of the best female individuals in mountain biking, Ghost Factory Racing Team remains greater than the sum of its parts. The athletes – Alexandra Engen, Anne Terpstra, Lisi Osl, Lisa Pasteiner and Malene
Degn – hold between them an array of trophies. But it’s the newfound bond between five girls that’s the real prize. With it, they’re able to trust in their teammates and find flow when they need it most. It’s never needed more than during big races. “In mountain biking, we all know what it is. If you hit a trail well, you experience it,” says Terpstra. It’s that transcendent, almost intangible moment that allows top athletes to stop thinking and start excelling, no matter their sport.
“LOSING YOUR WAY IS PART OF THE PLAN, THEN. BUT TURNING BACK ISN’T.” “You have this technical flow, where you hit every corner well, do that jump you want to do – that’s one kind,” says Engen. “But you can also create a kind of race flow. Before an event, I put each part of the race into different words
24
– corners of the track, bends, jumps – then I do the race exactly as I want to and go over the finish line knowing I’ve given everything.” When they can find this focus, their minds are left open to react during events. It’s in these moments that the Ghost Team can be truly creative on their bikes.
V I TA L S TAT I S T I C S ALEXANDRA ENGEN Date of birth: 05/01/1988 Nationality: Swedish Passion: People, stories, crafts
O U T D O O R C R E AT O R S ANNE TERPSTRA Date of birth: 05/01/1991 Nationality: Dutch Passion: Reading, music, cinema
LISI OSL Date of birth: 21/11/1985 Nationality: Austrian Passion: Shopping, cooking, laughing
LISA PASTEINER Date of birth: 20/06/1999 Nationality: Austrian Passion: Coffee, reading, skiing
MALENE DEGN Date of birth: 02/12/1996 Nationality: Danish Passion: Family, coffee, friends
25
It’s neither trust nor creativity alone, but a hard alloy of both that gives this group of competitors their edge. “We’re very close. I want to show my teammates I’m a good rider, which creates that balance between being over-excited and not excited,” says Degn. “You have to be creative. The level of our sport is very high. To improve, you need to find new ways, new exercises, something that makes you stronger in your body, stronger in your mind.” Physical effort will only get you so far. It’s the creator mindset that pushes you further than you knew you could go. That’s what allows the Ghost Team to live without limits in their sport. And whether you ride as a collective or alone, it’s what will allow you to find your own flow. Even if you’re just competing with yourself.
PASSION: M O U N TA I N B I K I N G
“YOU HAVE TO BE CREATIVE. TO IMPROVE, YOU NEED TO FIND NEW WAYS, NEW EXERCISES, SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU STRONGER.” NO LIMITS It’s for this reason that the team train in the adidas TERREX Agravic Alpha Hooded Shield Jacket. In mountain biking, the elements can be as unpredictable as your opponents – you have to perform in both hot and cold conditions, push through biting winds. Your kit has to be versatile enough to stand up to any task.
The Ghost Team believe that creativity can’t exist without flow. You have to be totally in the moment during your races. And your gear can never get in the way of that. “The best kit is the kit you don’t know is there,” says Terpstra. “You don’t want to get distracted by something that’s irritating or not quite right. If the things are good, you don’t notice it. If it’s not good, you notice it, then you can’t find your flow.”
The Agravic Hooded Shield Jacket is easily packable, so if the weather turns you can bring it out or put it away with ease. This means you’re never weighed down by the wrong kit on your rides, which in turn means that the trail only stops when you do. You’re free to create, to carve out your own routes. “When I’m training, doing my long rides, I like finding one new route every time,” says Engen. “I often get lost.” Losing your way is part of the plan, then. But turning back isn’t.

NUTRITION
FEED YOUR
TO BE THE BEST IN YOUR SPORT, REGARDLESS WHICH DISCIPLINE, NUTRITION IS KEY. IT IS THE CORE OF PERFORMANCE AND CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUCCESS AND FAILURE. As well as fuelling the body, good food can give a psychological boost - it literally fuels your creativity. The impact of taste, smell and texture can give something to look forward to after a cold day on the trails or inspire us to break out of the comfort zone. So how do you combine clean, environmentally-conscious eating with limited time without breaking the bank? The grassroots start at home. Fresh foods such as vegetables, fruits and herbs are a great basis and need not cost the earth. If meat and fish are on the menu, less is more – better to go high-quality, sustainably sourced, than high quantity. The same applies to fuelling on the road – regardless of whether it’s a weekend at your local crag or an expedition to the Andes. Nutrition is a key success factor for endurance performance – we have to tune into our own personal journey and no one else’s. Consider the volume of training, competition rhythm, social demands and sporting environment such as temperature and terrain. All these factors make your situation unique.
28
As athletes, our energy requirements are higher. Whether climbing a crag, biking 100km or trail running at altitude, your body needs more to keep going. The focus is not only how many calories you consume but where those calories come from. Emphasizing nutrient dense foods such as wholegrain carbs, unsaturated fats such as olive oil and seeds and proteins such as fish, chicken or pulses will ensure you are well-fuelled and recover fast from your sessions. Avoid empty calorie foods such as refined carbohydrates (white flour and sugar-based foods), saturated and trans fats and ensure they only feature occasionally in your diet. If you plan in advance, you can tailor snacks and meals to personal tastes and nutrition requirements, save money and have higher quality food.
