ANDREW TAYLOR
WITH SIX BIKES AND ONE MAGICAL BUS, ANDREW TAYLOR SEARCHES FOR THE PERFECT FREERIDE ON THE ROAD TRIP OF A LIFETIME. DAT E O F B I RT H : 1 ST J A N U A R Y 1 9 8 8
Imagine the perfect freeride. For Andrew Taylor, 28, that looks like the open face of a mountain with compacted dirt and flowing terrain, open sky and endless scenery soaring in all directions and the choice to drop in wherever you wish. Now… just bomb downhill. That was the vision that Andrew hoped to realize on an epic journey to Alaska. Exploring the big mountains of Alaska had been his dream ever since he was a kid. Alaska is almost 5,000km away from his home in Santa Cruz, however. The question was: ‘How would he get there?’
A L L A B OA R D T H E BU S Andrew initially considered purchasing a Volkswagen van, which is the ultimate road-trip icon. Turns out, however, “V-Dubs” are actually quite expensive. On to Plan B and a most unusual choice. Andrew found a used school bus for sale for $2,000. It was yellow, about seven metres long, full of seats, and had 321,868km on the clock.
6
It was perfect. He tore out the seats, and installed hardwood floors, a bed and a kitchen, complete with a sink, refrigerator and a stove. He installed solar panels on the roof to run his appliances with green energy.
NOW .... JUST BOMB DOWNHILL On the back, Andrew hired a friend to build a custom bike rack that could hold six mountain bikes, a motorcycle and a barbecue grill. But perhaps the most unique feature is the paint job. An artist, another friend, painted a custom mural that wrapped around the entire bus. There was only one thing left for to do. “I didn’t really train for this trip,” Andrew explains. “However, I did grow a sweet beard. If you’re going to Alaska, you need to have a sweet beard!”
HEADING NORTH Andrew posted his plan on Instagram, using the hashtag #AKorBUST. What followed is testament to the ways people now use social media to communicate and connect with each other. Local bikers who were following Andrew’s journey started reaching out. “People were contacting me and saying I should stop by,” says Andrew. “It was actually kind of cool. It’s how I met a few different people along the way.” The first stop was Humboldt County, in northern California, to ride with locals. It was a 7h drive — yet he hadn’t even made it out of his home state! Next up was Ashland, Oregon. A day or two of biking, and then onward to Whistler, in British Columbia, where Andrew competed in the Crankworx competition. “From there, I made my way north,” says Andrew. “This is the part I was most excited about, because I hadn’t really been past Whistler. My first stop was in Farwell Canyon, which had amazing views and trails.” Farwell Canyon blew Andrew away and it ended up being his favorite stopping point on the drive. “You had to hike two hours to the top of the ridges, then drop down toward this big river.” From Farwell Canyon, he reached the start of the forbidding Alaskan Highway — a point of no return.
HEALY
HOMETOWN: S A N TA C R U Z , CALIFORNIA
ENTERING AK Three full days of driving ensued. His only stop was “chillaxing” for a few hours in the famous Liard Hot Springs, in the middle of the Yukon wilderness. Finally, Andrew, with his fully “sweet beard”, crossed the border in Fairbanks, Alaska. As he was driving around looking for a local bike store to get information about where to bike, an interesting encounter happened. A car pulled up behind his bus, and out jumped a teenage kid and his mum. “He’d seen my bus on one of the mountain biking websites and they pulled me over,” says Andrew. “He said he wanted
« I THINK IT WAS THE MOST EXPLORING I’VE EVER DONE ON MY BIKE. »
to show me around. So first thing, I got a tour from one of the local kids.” The recognizable paint job was not just for decoration — it was proving itself to be quite useful! Now, Andrew headed to Healy, at the entrance of Denali National Park. But first, some fishing with a local guide. Throughout the trip, Andrew cooked every single meal out of his bus. “I was eating normal food,” he explains. “But the best meal was that evening, after catching a trout. We barbecued it as the Northern Lights went off all around us. I’d say that was the most memorable meal.” Andrew was itching to get on his bike and explore. “Alaska is just so big,” he says. “In a sense, it’s almost overwhelming.” The Alaska leg of the trip ended up being gruelling. Allday missions on his bike, trying to find new terrain to drop. “I think it was the most exploring I’ve ever done on my bike,” he says. “Just being out for days on end, in the middle of nowhere. In a sense, it was an ultimate exploration.”

But one of the most memorable moments came when he hired a helicopter to land him on top of a remote mountain. All around him were open skies and perfect views of Denali and beyond. Beneath him was an endless ridge and an open face — the choice of where to drop in was his and his alone. “That was one of those moments where it was like, ‘Yeah, this is insane!’” he says.
LAST STOP Healy, Alaska
FIRST STOP Humboldt County, California
S O U T H WA R D B O U N D After six weeks on the road, biking almost every day from sun-up to sunset, Andrew was exhausted. He drove home, taking seven straight days, and completing a nearly 10,000km round trip. He’s already planning his next adventure. “Originally, when I thought of this idea, the mural on the bus is of mountains, representing Alaska. But it wraps around the other side and becomes a desert. And that’s where I want to go next. Drive south, down to Baja, Mexico, and do some surfing and riding as well.” No matter which direction he heads, for Andrew, the joy of riding remains. “I love the freedom it gives me,” he says. “Being able to explore on my bike and bomb sweet hills.”

GOD OF NEW
FABIAN BUHL
OCC U PAT I O N : PROFESSIONAL CLIMBER
HOMETOWN: O B E R S TA U F E N , GERMANY
FABIAN BUHL SOLO REDPOINTS “GANESHA” (8C) AT THE SONNWENDWAND, LOFERER STEINPLATTE, AUSTRIA.
After being the first to repeat Alex Huber’s “Nirwana”, a 7-pitch route on the Sonnwendwand at Loferer Steinplatte considered one of the hardest multi-pitch routes in the World, Fabian Buhl was hooked. The 25-year-old wanted to open his own route in the same style, starting ground-up and solo. Right next to “Nirwana” and the Huberbuam’s fatal route “Karma”, he solo-redpointed “Ganesha” (8c), a 6-pitch route named after an elephant-headed Hindu god that is widely revered as the remover of obstacles and the God of New Beginnings. It’s a great image for overcoming the many hurdles he faced while developing his very own rope management system that has given him the confidence to tackle many more free-climbing projects in the future. It all started with repeating “Nirwana” (8c). The route is located at the Loferer Alm in Austria and is one of the
12 12
masterpieces of Alex Huber. Two years ago, Fabian was standing right underneath that rock face for the first time and was deeply impressed by the overhanging wall with its perfect limestone. It was not only the beauty of the line and the spaced-out protection that impressed the young German; it was mainly the style in which Alex had opened the route that inspired him - ground-up and solo, something Fabian couldn’t imagine doing back then.
TA K I N G H I G H E R R I S K S A N D A C C E P T I N G B I G G E R FA L L S As time passed by and his climbing skills and routines progressed, Fabian decided to give rope-soloing a try to see whether he would enjoy it. He remembered a crack system at Sonnwendwand next to “Nirwana” and was ready to face the challenge of opening a line ground-up
as few bolts as possible. He wasn’t even sure if the third pitch was climbable but was keen to try it. Over the winter, he worked on improving his solo system. After many hours of trying, he finally developed a with rope management that worked for him. It also meant he had to take higher risks and accept bigger falls. Otherwise he wouldn’t be able to get the rope fast enough to clip during difficult pitches.
F I R ST A N D F O R E M O ST A M E N TA L C H A L L E N G E In spring 2016, Fabian cleaned the cracks and brushed the lichen off the holds. During that process he tried to find the beta and realized that the lower pitches would be mentally tough because he wasn’t using a single bolt in them. The crux pitches were N°3 – a very hard boulder around a bad pinch with a complex heel hook – and N°5 – a technical, slightly overhanging face climb with a dyno to the lip – with only two bolts each, making for a total of four bolts on 200m (plus the bolts on the belay).
GETTING
U P AT 4 A M T O S TA R T THE REDPOINT ASCENT
Fabian’s major challenge for solo redpointing was the endurance, due to long holding times while organizing his rope. He had to learn on the move whether he could put out enough rope for the upcoming metres without having too much rope in the system. There was a high risk of hitting the ledge. Whenever possible, Fabian worked on his project… weather permitting. In the summer, the south-facing wall was exposed to the sun all day long. So he had to get up at 4 am to start his redpoint ascent at first light. He had good conditions between 4:30 am and noon, but he still smeared off at the end of the crucial fifth pitch for two days in a row, meaning he had to get up early again and again. On the third day, however, there was a slight breeze and that finally allowed him to solo redpoint “Ganesha” (8c).
« IT WAS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE, TO SAY THE LEAST, ONE THAT I DID NOT WANT TO MISS. »
13
BEHIND THE SCENES When not spending time in the mountains, either freeride skiing or trail running, Fabian Buhl has a whole range of hobbies. Listening to good music and hanging out with good friends gets a new dimension every time cooking is involved.
LOFER
“I am always curious to learn different cooking styles. It sometimes feels like escaping to a different world.”
« GIVING IT ALL AND BEING OBSESSED WITH A PROJECT THAT HOLDS WAY MORE THAN JUST A PHYSICAL CHALLENGE IS AMAZING AND WORTH SOME SACRIFICE! »
Another of his great off-rock passions is wood carving. “It makes me feel completely relaxed. I try to be creative but also keep the piece as natural as possible. It makes me happy to take part in the development and then use the furniture or observe the art I made myself.” While shifting between bouldering, sport - or trad to multi-pitch climbing, Fabian never feels bored or in need of a vacation. Yet his home area or Ticino are the places that enable him to thoroughly recharge, especially before embarking on a new project. “The better I prepare myself for a project, the more secure I feel. That’s the moment when doubts get replaced by the joy of trying and when curiosity wins in my head.”

PASSION: W H I T E WAT E R KAYAKING
ADRIAN MATTERN
HOMETOWN: HEIDELBERG, GERMANY
ADRIAN MATTERN TOOK THE PLUNGE AND WON THE 2016 CLAIM FREEDOM ACTIVATION, AND NOW HE’S A FULL-TIME PROFESSIONAL WHITEWATER KAYAKER.
Sometimes you just have to go over the edge to see how far you can go. When you’re in a boat, paddling down the sickest whitewater rapids in the world, the laws of the river rule. It’s all about having respect for the powerful
20
forces of nature, releasing your instinct to try to control every outcome and just going with the flow. Sometimes those principles aren’t just the laws of the river — they’re guidelines for a righteous way to lead a life. This was Adrian Mattern’s feeling when he approached his father to tell him he wouldn’t be going to university right after school. He needed a year, he said… at least. A year to explore the world and follow his passion for kayaking for as long as it burned within him. His father agreed. After all, he had taken his son boating throughout those early years instead of going to the library. How could he say no? He did, however, have one qualifier: “At some point, you get a college degree,” he said. “OK, I promise I will,” Adrian replied. Now, that one year has turned to four and Adrian has realized his childhood dream of becoming a pro kayaker.
HEIDELBERG
AT T E , AT TA C K ! It all started at a small club in Heidelberg, Germany, when Adrian was just nine years old. Back then, his friends called him Atte. By the time he was 11, he was running whitewater. At first it was just about surviving the raging rapids. Soon, it became about play. Freestyle paddling, hocking loops, airs, and rotations fearlessly. It was those skills that landed Atte on the German National Team, which he represented in the 2013 World Championships in the U.S. Comps, though, weren’t the end-all for Adrian. Tricks were cool, but sitting in an eddy and waiting your turn for 45 seconds of performance in front of a bunch of judges was not. For Adrian, adventure called.
CLAIM FREEDOM The adidas Claim Freedom activation began as a way to inspire outdoor enthusiasts to live life without limits. From all over the world, participants shared their dream projects with the community. Ultimately, seven of them were selected and empowered to realize and document their dreams. An action-packed film documenting four of these adventures was created to a huge response. On the night of its premiere, a jury finally announced Adrian Mattern as the overall winner of the campaign and he was invited to join the adidas family as a new Outdoor athlete.

«KAYAKING IS MY LIFE AND I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING THAT COULD MAKE ME HAPPIER.» WILD RIVER RUN As Adrian made the transition from the comp scene to exploring the wildest and most remote rivers in the world, he soon earned a reputation as one of the best kayakers in Germany. Talent was one thing, but the real drivers of his success were passion and commitment. That commitment also played a role in Adrian winning the Claim Freedom activation, travelling to the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. to drop some of the most insane waterfalls in the world and subsequently landing a pro contract with adidas. “If you really, really want something in life, there will be a way to achieve it,” Adrian says. “Even if it seems impossible.” Adrian has several projects that he’s working on now, but even as a pro, he’s still staying true to the lessons of the river and going with the flow. “Right now I am just thankful for every day on the water,” he says. “Kayaking is my life and I can’t think of anything that could make me happier. But by the time I’m 30, I also hope to have a college degree.” After all, he did promise his dad…

Š Parley for the Oceans
Every second breath we take is generated by the oceans, a resource of incredible importance and vastness, yet fragile, endangered and, most of all, dependant on human actions. In light of the need to create positive changes, adidas announced a partnership in April 2015 with Parley for the Oceans, an environmental organisation and network dedicated to raising awareness about the beauty and fragility of the oceans and to collaborate on projects that can end their destruction.
« TOGETHER WE CREATE TRENDS, AND TRENDS HAVE THE POWER TO SHIFT THINKING AND BEHAVIOUR – SOMETIMES EVEN OVERNIGHT. » Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans © Jason Childs
With the goal of developing and supporting new technologies to up-cycle marine plastic waste, it didn’t take much for adidas and Parley to put theory into practice. Since the collaboration has been established, several milestones have already been achieved and, in SS17, the very first adidas TERREX Parley products are to be launched: the adidas TERREX Climacool Boat Parley shoe and the adidas TERREX Parley Logo Tee, both made with Parley Ocean Plastic®, high-performance yarn and polymers generated from marine plastic waste.
ARE YOU ONE OF THEM
E C O - I N N O VAT I O N I N M OT I O N The lodestar of this unique collaboration has not only been to focus on creating the next generation of design concepts, technologies, materials and products, but also to redefine product lifecycles and reinvent production methods, as well as engage consumers, athletes, artists, designers, scientists and environmentalists to start walking the talk, raise their voice and contribute their skills for the ocean cause.

As a founding member, adidas supports Parley for the Oceans in its efforts in communication and education, research and development, direct action and eco-innovation. The mutual focus is on Parley’s comprehensive Ocean Plastic Program, which is led by the Parley A.I.R. Strategy (Avoid, Intercept and Redesign) to end marine plastic pollution. MINA!
GETTING TO THE TOP ISN’T EASY. BUT STAYING THERE FOR AS MANY YEARS AS MINA MARKOVIČ HAS IS SIMPLY EXTRAORDINARY. HER OUTSTANDING COMPETITIVE AND ROCK CLIMBING SUCCESSES MAKE HER ONE OF THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED CLIMBERS OF OUR TIME. “That was almost too easy. I’d love to do the whole thing again straightaway”, says Slovenian-born Mina Markovič on a beautiful day in December 2015 in the Spanish climbing destination of Santa Linya. The route she calls “almost too easy” is ‘La Fabela pa la Enmienda’, which comes with a grade of 9a – a magic number in climbing circles: the so-called ‘straight 11’, the boundary between strong and really strong. There’s only a handful of women worldwide who have managed to reach that difficulty level. And even fewer women also have multiple overall World Cup victories under their belt. Mina does. But she by no means got there by accident.
ACHIEVEMENTS: THREE TIMES OVERALL WORLD CUP WINNER IN LEAD CLIMBING
28
TA L E N T A N D D E T E R M I N AT I O N Great success stories usually start small. To be specific: four by eight metres. A very basic climbing wall, erected for sports week at school, was enough to ignite the fire in Mina. But her journey was not without obstacles: the wall was taken down and it took several months for another climbing opportunity to arise. Again it was short-lived as that wall also had to be moved to another location. But one thing was certain: Mina had just as much talent as she did passion. And where there’s passion, there’s a way. Mina pushed her parents to drive her to a climbing wall in another city twice a week. And when her parents were busy, she would hitch-hike or spend her hard-earned pocket money on bus rides or train journeys. This period of her life left a strong mark on Mina – and one that made her strong. And grateful. And committed. Because the things we don’t take for granted are always special. And Mina has maintained that attitude to this day: “I love this sport. But to me, climbing is not just a sport. Climbing is my life. The downsides of it? As far as I’m concerned, there aren’t any!”

Cup, where she ended up in the Top 5. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that she would one day be a force to be reckoned with. Since 2010, Mina’s name has been leading the way. And this consistency, according to Mina, is one of her greatest successes: “Keeping myself motivated over such an extended period of time, avoiding injury and never losing the joy is something very special to me. But it’s no coincidence either. It’s the result of good planning, good structure, good preparation.” In 2016, Mina also received the Competition Award – the socalled “Academy Award of Climbing” – at the legendary Rock Master Festival in Arco. So what does the future hold for somebody who’s basically got nothing left to achieve? “I want to keep getting better. I don’t feel I’ve achieved my life goals yet with the 9a. But, on the contrary. I just want to stay in shape and enjoy climbing.”
