Faithful Friend Adapts By Glynis Hart
W
hen Laura Landon Cook’s father had a stroke, she needed a way to explain it to her twins, who were in the first grade at the time. Bruce Landon, her father, had come out of the stroke with aphasia, trouble with spoken communication. Laura, a teacher, decided she needed a book she could share with her children — but there weren’t any. So she wrote one herself. “Ruby and the Big Guy” is available now through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and the Community Store in Saranac Lake. Written from Ruby the dog’s point of view, it tells the story of Bruce’s stroke and aphasia for first- or second-grade readers.
Dogs and books have been an important part of the Landon family’s life for a long time. For many years, Bruce worked as a caretaker of a private estate. “It was dog heaven,” said Connie Landon, Bruce’s wife and Laura’s mother. “When he was a caretaker, he had a dog with him at all times.” During the interview, Bruce was quiet but not unexpressive. He could interrupt with a gesture, or point, or shake his head. His blue eyes flashed occasionally with frustration as words rushed to the surface but then stayed just out of reach. He gestured to me to follow him into the other room,
where a map of the estate hung on the wall. Two hundred acres of mountain, stream and pond. His eyes lingered on the map, then swept back to me: It was a beautiful place. Ruby, Bruce’s yellow Labrador retriever, had lived a happy life riding around with him in the truck or snoozing in his office. The Landons had always had dogs, but Ruby was special. After the stroke, the Landons began to think Ruby might make a good therapy dog. She took commands well, and she didn’t worry much. Therapy dogs, however, have to pass some pretty rigorous tests. In one test, Ruby had to lie down and wait calmly when Bruce left the room, and stay down until he came back. She was exposed to walkers, wheelchairs and hospital equipment so it wouldn’t frighten her. But the hardest test of all was a plate of cookies. “She’s a Lab, so she’s a pig. They wanted her to be able to walk past a plate of cookies set in the middle of the floor,” said Connie. Bruce walked Ruby past the cookies twice, reminding her gently: “With me, with me.” “She passed with flying colors,” said Connie. As a certified therapy dog, Ruby then had a job: Bruce took her to Petrova Elementary School to work with the kids. Some kids would practice language skills by reading to her. Ruby always listened patiently. Bruce would take some of the older kids outdoors and teach them how to give Ruby commands such as “sit” and “fetch.” When Bruce suffered the stroke in February 2012, his family was devastated. At first they thought he might never walk again. As he recovered, doctors diagnosed him with aphasia. Inside his brain, he’s the same guy as ever, but he faces challenges in communication and using his right arm. He feels sad, and his dog feels it, too. A year after the stroke, they moved from the estate to the house they now live in on Stevenson Lane, Saranac Lake. It’s beautiful, with a yard sloping down to the Saranac River, but it’s not the same, says Bruce with a sweeping gesture and a head shake. “Ruby and the Big Guy,” reminds readers — and the author — that what’s really important is being near the ones we love. When Bruce was in the hospital, Ruby had to stay at a friend’s house. Not knowing what had happened, she wondered whether she’d ever see her people again. For Ruby, being taken to visit Bruce in the hospital was a big relief. “It was good therapy for Laura to write the book,” said Connie. Although they have not been able to resume their old routine at school, Ruby and Bruce still spend their days together. They’ve added another, younger dog to the family, and Connie thinks she might make a therapy dog one day, “if she calms down.” Meanwhile, they take a lot of walks, and Bruce throws the ball for Ruby. Maybe not as many times as she wants him to, but enough.

Growing plants indoors adds vibrance and cheer to our homes in winter, and may even offer a squeeze or sprinkle of homegrown culinary delight to winter meals. Try your hand at growing these colorful blooms and easy edibles indoors this year, and reap the benefits of tending living plants throughout winter.
W in ter Bloom ers
If you’re a fan of cut flowers but want your beautiful blooms to last even longer, try these plants that add color to winter interiors. O rchid s Though orchids require a slightly different care regimen than the average houseplant (they need less water and more fertilizer, for instance), their blooms can last for months, brightening any room with their tropical feel. Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) are easier to find than ever. Buy one with a few closed blooms to get the full flowering experience. Check out the American Orchid Society for reliable care instructions. Rieg erBeg on ia Referred to as winter-flowering begonias, Rieger begonias produce boisterous blooms, ranging from white to fuschia, during short days. Place plants in an east- or west-facing window and fertilize monthly while in bloom. With proper care you may be able to get it to rebloom.
C hristm a sC a ctu s Though now you can find hybrid varieties that bloom any time of year, these plants traditionally produce their vibrant blooms, ranging from salmon pink to yellow to ruby, closer to the holidays. Keep these succulents in sandy soil and only water when soil is completely dry. C ycla m en Reliable winter bloomers, cyclamens’ pink to red blooms are as stunning as their variegated foliage. The plant requires excellent drainage; water when soil is dry, avoiding getting water on leaves or stems. Fertilize bimonthly with watersoluble fertilizer mixed at half-strength.
W in ter E d ib les
Many edibles don’t grow well indoors, but these hardy kitchen helpers can survive in pots year-round. C u lin a ry Herb s In the ground outdoors, culinary herbs are pretty selfsufficient. Indoors, you’ll need to give them a bit of extra care. Light is the most important determining factor for success. Look for a window that gets six or more hours of sun per day — usually south- or southwest-facing. Choose self-watering containers designed for good drainage, and use a well-draining soil mix, such as one containing potting soil plus sand, perlite, vermiculite and/or peat moss. Use filtered water occasionally to flush out sodium buildup, and replace potting soil if it forms a white crust. Fertilize sparingly, not more than every couple of weeks, with seaweed or fish emulsion spritz. Most herbs thrive with consistent moisture, but basil, oregano and sage do better if soil is allowed to dry completely between waterings. Follow these tips from Rose Marie Nichols McGee and Maggie Stuckey, the gardening-expert authors of The Bountiful Container. Keep plants watered according to their specific needs. Some indoor plants prefer consistently moist soil, while others — especially culinary herbs such as basil, oregano and sage — thrive if soil is allowed to dry out between waterings. Fertilize winter bloomers with rinse water from milk or juice cartons, which offers nutrients. Pinch off spent blooms to encourage new growth. For herbs, choose a window with as much sun as possible — ideally facing south or southwest. Manage expectations. We won’t get luxuriant growth on all plants indoors. Instead, relish the homegrown gems that do survive inside.
S p rou tsa n d M icrog reen s Sprouts and microgreens are intensely nutritious, plus they bring the feel of the green garden indoors — and can be grown any time of year. Sprouts are typically grown in water only, and usually from the seeds of legumes such as alfalfa and mung beans. Microgreens are grown in a little bit of soil, and tend to be baby vegetable plants such as beets, cabbages, radishes and sunflowers. Sprouts reach full flavor potential within a few days, and microgreens don’t take much longer — just a week or two. Fresh C itru s Lemons and limes grow surprisingly well indoors in containers throughout the winter, and they will be thrilled to be moved outdoors come spring. As with all plants intended for containers, it’s best to look for dwarf varieties. Two culinary darlings — the sweet-tart Meyer lemon and the kaffir lime, which boasts fragrant, flavorful leaves — are great choices. Check seed catalogs (and seed company websites) for other great container varieties. Container citrus plants need to be at least a couple of years old before you can expect a harvest. They like well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Ambient indoor temperature is fine, but keep your precious trees away from extra-cold drafts or extrahot vents and heaters. When all danger of frost has passed, citrus trees are happier outside in full sun. Add an organic fertilizer a couple of times throughout the winter, and rely on insecticidal soap spritzes (we like Safer brand) for any pests. Spray weekly until pests vacate. ith a smaller population to serve than multiplex theaters, the independently owned cinemas of the Adirondacks fill seats by offering the lowest possible prices, minimal trailers and popcorn with real butter. Tourists visiting Tupper Lake, AuSable Forks or Lake Placid may never get to see a movie as cheaply at home. That does not mean theaters here are safe from competition. More viewers use streaming, $3 rentals from grocery stores and larger screens in the average home than ever before, but theater owners say they offer something better. “I have five-point surround sound and a mounted bigscreen TV,” said Heather Clark, who lives above the Palace Theatre in downtown Lake Placid. “I can watch a movie in my apartment, but watching it on the big screen? It’s completely different.” How does one come to own a cinema? “Barbara, I hope you’ve got money stashed away. I bought the Palace Theatre!” Barbara Clark remembers what her husband Reg, then a
Lake Placid funeral director, told her in 1960, one year into their marriage, when he purchased the cinema where he had once worked in high school. Cory Hanf had been a projectionist at the Palace for around a decade when he and his wife Sierra bought the longdefunct Hollywood Theater in AuSable Forks. While moving from Lake Placid to AuSable Forks, Sierra — an architectural enthusiast — learned that the empty storefront on Main Street had been a movie theater from the 1920s to the 1980s. They decided to purchase the building and turn its restoration into an ongoing family project. Enlisting the help of their sons, now 15 and 18 years old, they set to work repairing the water-damaged roof, uncovering and filling the slanted floor, adding seats and painting the lobby. Sally Strasser ran projectors for film’s heavy hitters for years. Getting her start at a Buffalo theater as a night job in college, she quickly found herself engrossed in the industry and became an expert projectionist. In 2002 she moved to Tupper Lake, and by 2004 she had purchased the State Theater there. Strasser pours the same obsessive attention to detail into movies in Tupper Lake as she did for the Sundance Film Festival or Martin Scorsese’s private screening room. Her goal of providing flawless, finely tuned films has even led her to sneak into the projection booths of other multiplexes mid-film to refocus the lens. Strasser passed the projecting talent on to her sons, and in 2015 the whole family was hired to screen Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” on special 70-millimeter film
in three different locations. Three generations of Clarks currently work at the Palace, doing everything from taking tickets to decorating the lobby. While Barbara, Reg and Heather were in the lobby, the couple’s son and grandson showed up and joined the conversation, remembering film facts, telling stories from years of working there and discussing the ghosts who are said to roam the theater. Evidenced by the film reel tattooed on her arm, Heather inherited her grandparents’ love of cinema. She lives above the

lobby, collects classic film posters and screens throwback films on Sunday evenings to fundraise for refurbishing the Palace’s Robert Morton pipe organ, a relic from the silent-movie era. Cory Hanf, who works at the post office, and Sierra, who drives a bus, are always pushing progress to reconstruct the theater forward. When the project feels tedious and overwhelming, Cory said he remembers why he started it and what it means to the town. At the risk of sounding curmudgeonly, Cory, only 42, said he is troubled by how phones isolate people and that even though it is culturally taboo to talk during a movie, movies provide opportunity to get out of the house, do something enjoyable with other people and discuss it with them afterward. “I really hope that it doesn’t get to a point where everything is homebound,” Cory said. “It’s not good for us as a people.”
