Luge racer overcomes obstacles to be an Olympian
By Justin A. Levine
L
ake Placid resident Emily Sweeney will make her first Olympic appearance next month in South Korea, but these are the third Olympics that have had an impact on her life. Sweeney, a luge racer who hails from Connecticut but lived at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid before buying a house in the village, is just 24. She’s knocked on the Olympic door before, and after a much-needed mental and physical reset, the luger is prepared to make her splash on the world’s biggest stage. “I think I’m in a good spot going into the games,” she said over the phone from Europe in January. “This has been a jampacked year filled with highstakes races, but I feel like I’m in a good spot.” When she was 16, Sweeney lost out on a spot on the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team to her sister, and then she fell short of

qualifying for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. After Sochi, Sweeney basically walked away from the sport that had driven her life up until then. “At that point, I was just along for the ride,” she said. “I was very young, so I didn’t really address my feelings about it until it was kind of too late, so I think it kind of affected me in 2014. But eight years later, and I have no doubts this year.” Sweeney is coming off of wrist surgery in 2016, but in some ways thinks her injury helped her become a better competitor. “You always hear about athletes getting injured and it made them better, and I kind of would hear those stories and think, ‘Wow, they’re crazy,’ but I kind of experienced that myself,” she said. “By having surgery right before the [World Cup] season, I showed myself that I had different strengths as a glider, and I learned a lot
from that whole experience, and I think I’m better because of it.” Sweeney said her wrist feels much better but still needs some attention. Sweeney had her best World Cup season this year, but oddly enough, her worst competition was at her home track at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid. Sweeney, whose father is from Saranac Lake and who still has family in the area, said that her fans - called Team Sween - are the best she could hope for. Her mother, father, sister and aunt and uncle are all expected to travel to Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the Olympics, along with her sister’s fiancé. “I have the best kind of support group you could ask for, they are awesome,” she said. “They’re happy for me and with me no matter how I do. They’re ready to go. They’re always ready to go.”

ob Maswick and a group of fellow outdoor enthusiasts recently took a six-hour crosscountry ski trip in the High Peaks Wilderness Area near Lake Placid. They started at 8:30 on a Saturday morning to ski with the sun and stay warm. They ventured from South Meadow Road to Marcy Dam. Then they skied from Avalanche Lake to Lake Colden via the hiking trail. The group has gone to these places before, but never on this particular set of trails. Normally, they ski across a land bridge that connects the two lakes, so this route was a new experience. “It’s just something different,” Maswick said. That “something different” is important to Maswick’s view of the Adirondack Park. He enjoys finding new and novel ways to climb a mountain he’s already hiked five times prior. “I constantly marvel that I can ski the same route, bike the same route, or whatever and always see something differently,” he said. Maswick, originally from Troy, has been living in the Adirondacks for the past 18 years. “[My wife Janice and I] would come up here a couple of times a year with friends,” he said. “We kept doing it, kept liking it a little bit more and finally decided it was going to be the cornerstone of our retirement plan, so we bought a house, and the rest was history.” Maswick now works as a real estate associate broker for Engel and Völkers in Lake Placid while enjoying the mountains he loves so much. He has been an avid hiker, skier and mountain biker in the North Country for more than 20 years. Although he no longer races on skis or bikes competitively, he often goes on excursions with a small, confident group of outdoor enthusiasts he describes as “some of the most experienced hikers in the Adirondacks.” Not only a recreationalist in the Adirondacks, Maswick works with the
Barkeater Trails Alliance to ensure his favorite paths stay clean and protected. “Barkeater Trails Alliance is the driving force in the Tri-Lakes area for development of mountain bike and ski trails,” Maswick said. “It’s also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Jackrabbit Trail, which runs from Paul Smiths to Keene. “I spend a lot of time volunteering with them for trail maintenance and trail work, so I can hop on my bike and enjoy the fruits of those labors.” Maswick may plan out certain trips like the aforementioned excursion to Marcy Dam and Avalanche Lake, but a lot of times he’ll just grab his skis or hop on his bike and go on an impromptu adventure. “It all depends on how much time I’ve got,” he said. “If I have a few hours, I might ski out to the Klondike Trail and do a little reconnaissance mission — see what the coverage was like, what the skiing was like. “A lot of the mountain bike trails around here take only an hour or two to ride.” Going back to that “something different,” Maswick is also an Adirondack 46er in both the summer and the winter, meaning he’s climbed all 46 Adirondack high peaks. As both a man who loves the outdoors and one who knows real estate, Maswick sees why people take trips and relocate to the Adirondacks. “They can just simply drive up here, pull off at any place along the highway, look around and start experiencing the natural beauty of this area,” he said. In an email, Maswick wrote, “Look beyond the Tri-Lakes. I travel all over the entire park and have really come to appreciate the (sometimes stark) beauty and richness of different areas. Westport, Elizabethtown, Long Lake, Peru, Newcomb ... all these places (and all the spots in between) are hidden gems with quite a bit to offer. If you stop & get to know people there, it just adds to the experience.”
