I think that a vibrant small town is the heartbeat between the mountain peaks.

Rebecca Kelly & Craig Brashear Photo – Robin Limerick

W

hen ballet dancer Rebecca Kelly took her first trip to the Adirondacks in 1987, her stay at the Last Chance Ranch gave her a real welcometo-the-wilderness experience. She and her group of self-described “city kids” were hiking on a trail near the ranch when they encountered a mother black bear with her cub. “We were told to make noise (if we encountered a bear),” Kelly recalled with a laugh. “We had received some advice before we went on the trail: ‘Don’t look, and don’t divide the mother and cub.’ It

was berry season. It must have been August, and we must have been passing through a berry patch.” These days, Kelly is no longer just passing through the Adirondacks; she is embedded in its culture and business as she now calls AuSable Forks home for part of the year. She lives here with her husband and business partner Craig Brashear for four months in the summer as well as long weekends throughout the rest of the year. They are the proprietors of Rebecca Kelly Ballet, a New York City-based, chamber-sized dance company. They’ve worked hand-in-hand with the Lake

Placid Center for the Arts since 1987, but in July 2006, Kelly’s connection with AuSable Forks really began. The catalyst was a question by New York’s then U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton at an event in Plattsburgh. “When we were introduced, she knew a lot about us and asked really precise and perceptive questions, and challenged us to think about how many years we’d been in the Adirondacks,” Kelly recalled, “and she said: ‘What do you want your legacy to be? What do you want to do? Where is your building?’ “It was like a light bulb went off for both Craig and I.” At the time, the couple had built a cabin home in the Silver Lake area along the Saranac River, a 20-minute drive from AuSable Forks. During many trips into town to get gas, eggs and other goods, they had noticed an unassuming building that seemed similar to the kind of loft they inhabited in New York City. They began to realize this structure may be their answer to Clinton’s question. “We thought it had plenty of space for a dance studio,” Kelly said. Fast-forward more than a decade, and Kelly has opened up the long-neglected, 105-year-old former Masonic lodge to her dancers and the public over recent summers. But restoration of the Tahawus Cultural Center, as it’s now called, is at a critical juncture right now. Fundraising efforts are underway so it can also be used during harsh Adirondack winters as well. As she’s fallen in love with AuSable Forks’ authentic small-town character more and more over the years, she sees a stronger Tahawus Center as a way to help provide jobs and help the local economy. She and Brashear just hope a few more people are willing to take a chance on this hamlet at the confluence of the AuSable River’s East and West branches. “I think that a vibrant small town is the heartbeat between the mountain peaks,” she said. “People want to come down from their beautiful houses in the hills and have a place to gather, because it’s very human to gather every now and then. It was just, to me, exactly what a town needs.”

T

he Friends of Eagle Island is moving forward to re-establish the children’s summer camp with an anticipated soft opening in summer 2018. The Santa Clara town board amended the local Land Use Code on Jan. 12 to allow group camping on the island, which opened doors for fund development and partnerships, Executive Director Paula McGovern said. It would not be a Girl Scout camp, as it was for seven decades until 2008, but would serve as a camp for kids to learn about the Adirondacks and to sail, canoe, swim, climb and camp. FEI was also recently awarded a $498,825 grant through the 2016 state Regional Economic Development Awards and a a $10,000 grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation from the Hart Family Fund for Small Towns. “We’ve gotten an awful lot accomplished in a little over a year,” McGovern said. “We’ve gotten the land use approval. It’s gotten a lot more money through individual donations and through this grant from the state, which is incredible in two ways.

Obviously it’s money, a half a million dollars towards the renovations, but of course it also shows the state believes in the value of this island and the historic value of the camps.” It will still take a lot of work to get the camp up and running, including a new water supply system, septic upgrades, a new electric supply, foundation work, new roofs and kitchen upgrades, which will

total approximately $1.5 million. “We’re continuing our fundraising, and we’ve got a lot of long-term supporters,” McGovern said. “It’s all good stuff right now. We’re really ready to move forward full speed ahead.” McGovern said she is looking forward to reopening the camp as it should have many benefits to the community. “One, it gives the kids the opportunity to learn about the Adirondacks, learn about nature, learn about the environment,” she said. “It will also provide jobs for the local economy. Young people could be staff as counselors and advisors. And also as a National Historic Landmark, it’ll let people be able to see this unique facility with a unique history.” Eagle Island is a 30-acre property located on Upper Saranac Lake. It was designed in 1903 by architect William Coulter for Levi Morton, former New York governor and U.S. vice president under President Benjamin Harrison.

In 1910, Morton sold the camp to industrialist Henry Graves from Orange, New Jersey, who gifted the property to the Girl Scouts of the Oranges in 1937. Campers used the island from 1938 until 2008, as the local New Jersey Girl Scout council decided to discontinue its use in 2009 and sell the camp in 2010. The camp was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and in 2004 the property was named a National Historic Landmark. FEI purchased the island in November 2015 from the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Council for $2.45 million through the contribution of an anonymous donor.
