Living

In the Adirondacks From Slovakia to the American dream By Antonio Olivero / Photo ROOST

A

t that time 13 years ago, she was Andrea Sukenikoba, 22 years old, of Kysucke Nove Mesto, Slovakia. She came to Lake Placid like many other immigrants, through the J-1 visa student exchange program. But unlike many of her fellow J-1 workers, she didn’t want to be here not at first, at least. She was an undergraduate studying journalism at the University of San Cyril Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia, harboring hopes of globetrotting as a travel reporter. She didn’t want to experience something similar to “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Dawson’s

Creek” and “Melrose Place,” the only U.S. television shows that made their way to her part of Eastern Europe. But her parents insisted. This was an opportunity they didn’t have when they were young, before the Velvet Revolution opened up the borders of their homeland. “They wanted an education for us, to travel to different countries, having the freedom you don’t have from small, communistic countries,” Hudak said in a recent interview. She arrived in the U.S. without any knowledge of Lake Placid, not even where it was located. She flew solo to

this country and stayed in a hostel for two nights in downtown Manhattan. There she bought a prized possession, a $300 Nikon camera to capture her experiences. When she arrived in Lake Placid, waking from a nap aboard the Adirondack Trailways bus parked off Sentinel Road, she brought with her no arrangements for housing, no family or friends, and no fear. She soon found employment as a “salad girl” at Mister Mike’s Pizza and shelter with a Slovakian friend across the street from Mirror Lake. She fell in love with the lake, enjoying daily swims.

“I can hike before work, Hudak said. Who can do that? Not many people.”

While other J-1 students worked second and third jobs to make as much money as possible, Hudak chose to enjoy the recreation Lake Placid offers. “I was more like, ‘I’m here; I’m going to enjoy myself,’” she recalled. “I did all the touristy attractions and swam every day.” She returned home after that first summer to finish her third year of college, but her plan was to return to Lake Placid. In that short time, she had become smitten with the active lifestyle this mountain village offers. A year later, she returned on a two-year visa. “I loved it; there was no place like

Lake Placid for me,” she said. “There wasn’t then, and there isn’t now.” It was during this second stint that she met her eventual husband, Luke Hudak of Lake Placid. She didn’t speak English when she first arrived here, but in her current job at St. Joseph’s Addiction, Treatment and Recovery Centers in Saranac Lake, she advocates to insurance companies on behalf of her clients. In terms of research and communication, it’s somewhat similar to the journalism career she envisioned as a student. “I’m the person who asks the questions to get the full story,” she

said. “But it’s a battle every day. It’s difficult to explain to insurance companies that this client really needs to be here.” The Hudaks intend to live in Lake Placid for the foreseeable future, if not the rest of their lives. They enjoy simple community things such as letting their 2-year-old daughter Gabby run in the Saranac Lake Fun Run. She sometimes worries about her family back in Slovakia, but still, this life on the lake is ideal for now. “I can hike before work,” Hudak said. “Who can do that? Not many people.”

“Our Priorities are Simple... They’re Yours!”

While your away... protect your home I

By Emily R. Luxford t’s that time of year again. The leaves are already starting to change, and the “snowbirds” are taking flight, leaving their summer homes and camps to return south as a nip returns to the air in the Adirondacks. But what will they do with their summer homes while they are away? Most will close up shop for the frigid season and will not return until next spring.

Others may keep things running with the thermostat set low and waiting to be kicked back up upon their return for a skiing vacation, or just a nice weekend away from the city. All in all, if you are a firsttime second-home owner, what should you do with your own little getaway abode? Scott Gibson of Adirondack Premium Pest Services is a licensed pest control specialist and deals with exclusion work, moisture control and insulation repair from damage caused by mice and squirrels. He says consistency of temperature is a big part of keeping a home safe. “Try to maintain a temperature of at least 60 degrees or so,” Mr. Gibson states. “Anything 55 degrees or below can cause moisture buildup.” According to Gibson, powder post beetles can wreak havoc on a home internally, especially with Adirondack rustic trim and/or bark-on natural wood accents. Another good thing to do in the fall is to inspect for mice or squirrel nests, and to check for openings around the house where rodents could enter. Gibson explains that these openings should be “sealed with something other than steel wool, and foam insulation alone is not a good idea.” These products can be easily chewed through. It’s a good idea to consult with a professional. If a spot is closed off where there is activity in

one place, “animals will migrate to another spot to find an opening” and cause more damage. What can also help is running a dehumidifier in the house throughout the winter, with proper drainage. However, “it’s important to have someone checking the house at least on a monthly basis.” Continuing monthly pest control is helpful, but a caretaker can always keep an eye on things and let the homeowner know if pest control is needed. A caretaker is helpful whether or not a homeowner is completely closing down a house. A lot can go wrong in an Adirondack winter, such as frozen pipes, trees falling on structures and even large accumulations of snow making the dwelling inaccessible. Will Burnett has been a camp owner for close to 30 years and has helped take care of camps for over six years in Long Lake. A caretaker can be in charge of many things, from moving docks and cutting down problematic trees to draining water and putting RV antifreeze in the toilets and washers when closing down the home completely. There is a lot to do when a house is shut down for the winter and throughout the frozen season. If a homeowner is unable to do everything themselves, especially when they are away, a caretaker is one’s best bet. If anything, he or she gives the home/camp owner peace of mind.

Tips Before Leaving

1. Adjust your thermostat to prevent pipes from freezing. 2. Shut off the water at the main shut off valve. 3. Turn off your gas line to avoid leaks while away. 4. Close, lock, shutter or pull drapes to protect windows. 5. Unplug everything to avoid energy surges or fire. 6. Tell your neighbors to look out for your home 7. Transfer or stop mail to avoid piles when returning. 8. Check your sump pump to make sure it’s functioning. 9. Close the damper or flue on your fireplace. 10. Trim dangerous limbs and clean your gutters. 11. Take any live plants you have with you. 12. Clean out your fridge and pantry of all perishable items. 13. Discontinue cable TV and wifi. 14. Check for openings that critters can get in. 15. Arm your security alarm or cameras.

e’ve all probably experienced nature in a multitude of ways, but its transformative power never fades. Today, researchers are beginning to prove the positive effects that time spent in nature has on our minds and bodies. Although fall and winter may not always seem as uplifting as spring and summer, it’s still important to enjoy the natural world throughout the year. Spend time outdoors and bring the outdoors inside with these simple, eco-friendly decorating ideas for Halloween.

Add naturalelem ents to your seasonaldecorations w ith these fun and sim ple ideas S p ooky L u m in a ria Put your recycling to good use! Pull a few tin cans out the recycling bin to create your own luminaria decorated with spooky images. You can choose to keep it simple with bats and ghosts, or get more elaborate using ideas from your favorite Halloween movies. Use these spooky lights to guide treat-ortreaters to your door by hanging them from trees or sitting them along walkways. You’ll need: Tracing paper Permanent market Clean empty tin cans Hammer and large nail Spray paint (orange and black) Wire Tea-light candles Here’s how: 1. Using tracing paper, trace the pumpkin face or bat patterns (find them here: Pho to co urtesy o fBetterH o m es & http://bit.ly/2xaR0ky), or G a rdens make your own design. Transfer the pattern of your choice to a clean tin can; go over the transferred pattern with a permanent marker. Fill the tin can with water; place it in the freezer. When the water in the can is frozen, remove the can from the freezer. 2. Use a hammer and nail to puncture the design in the can. Punch two holes in the rim of the can on opposite sides, centering the design between the two holes. Let the ice melt; allow the can to dry completely. 3. Cut a 16-inch length of wire. Insert one end of the wire into a hole in the rim; twist the end of the wire around the wire length. Insert the other wire end through the other hole in the rim, securing the wire in the same manner. 4. Spray paint the pumpkin can orange and the bat can black. Let the paint dry. Place a tea-light candle inside the can and hang securely from a branch or garden hook. Courtesy Better Homes & Gardens. Use the time needed to collect supplies for these do-ityourself décor ideas as an excuse to spend a little more time in nature with your friends and family. Plus, children, adults, and crafting beginners will find these five decorations fun and easy-to-make. So, whether Halloween is your favorite holiday or just one of many, try one (or more!) of these ideas to mix up your décor.
