LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS
And the Emmy goes to... Lake Placid native Craig McCasland and his team at ESPN
L
By Elizabeth Izzo
ake Placid native Craig McCasland was 15 years old when he first stepped behind the lens. A local photographer, Dave Berner, asked him if he’d like to try his hand at filming a Can-Am hockey game at the Olympic Center. “I just said, ‘sure,’” McCasland said. What started as a hobby snowballed into a profession, and last year led to an Emmy Award win. McCasland was part of an ESPN team that was on the ground filming the U.S. Open tennis championship last year, a broadcast that won the network the 2018 Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Team Remote. The team dropped in and patched together video, audio and graphics to capture the event. “It was a huge undertaking,” he said. “But it’s what we do every day.” The 1987 Lake Placid High School graduate has sports in his veins. That’s a natural side effect, he said, of growing up in a village where the Olympic legacy looms large. McCasland went to college at SUNY Canton and SUNY Cortland. While in school, he filmed a live puck drop at an ECAC hockey game, and he realized in that moment that being behind the camera at sporting events was something he wanted to do as a career. It was 2002 when he was first assigned to cover an Olympic Games, in Salt Lake City. His Lake Placid roots made it easier. “We grew up around all these Olympic sports around here, so the technical knowledge of the sport is already embedded in your mind,” he
said. “It becomes second nature to cover.” McCasland was one of the cameramen assigned to film the bobsled events. “I was at the top of the track, where all the action was,” he said. “Everybody at home could see me out there, working every day.” McCasland has been present at six Olympic Games and has filmed athletes in bobsled, luge, skeleton, ski jumping, sailing, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, wrestling, curling and figure skating. Outside the Olympics, he’s covered NBA basketball, tennis, rodeo, soccer, horse racing, golf, rugby, skateboarding, air racing and volleyball. But the sport where he got his start — hockey — remains his favorite to film. “There’s so much drama in it,” he said. “I always call it the ‘cheap seats’ — you get the best seats in the house at these games, and they don’t cost anything. You work hard to get there.” One of his favorite hockey moments is when the New York Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in more than 50 years in 1994. He was there. “It doesn’t get more exciting than that,” he said. McCasland contributes his success as a cameraman to the support he’s received from his community and his parents, Ed and Kay McCasland. “The people that I’ve come across, that I grew up with here, the elder people in this town, the people that built this town,” he said. “Their influence has a lot to do with it. They taught me to just work hard and always represent Lake Placid. “I owe a lot of it to just being from Lake Placid. It takes a village.”

Lewis Mountain Named dʼ Suffragist For Famed Womens

MOUNT INEZ
A
By Elizabeth Izzo
mountain in the Essex County town of Lewis has been formally renamed after a famed women’s suffragist who partly grew up there. Mount Discovery was officially renamed Mount Inez, in honor of Inez Milholland, by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names on Dec. 12, 2019. The town of Lewis had renamed the mountain for Milholland more than 100 years ago, but it was never made official at the federal level. “These collective efforts have secured a lasting monument to one of Lewis’ most notable heroines and a significant U.S. historical figure, Inez Milholland,” Nancy Duff Campbell, a part-time Lewis resident who backed the proposal to rename Mount Discovery as Mount Inez, said in a statement. Campbell is a founder of the National Women’s Law Center. The small mountain — which reaches about 1,552 feet in elevation — had been known locally as Mount Inez since at least December 1916, following Milholland’s death at the age of 30 in Los Angeles, according to an article at that time in the now-defunct Elizabethtown Post newspaper. Milholland had been on a cross-country train trip to shore up support for candidates who backed the 19th Amendment, which guarantees the rights of citizens to vote regardless of gender, when she collapsed while delivering a speech. She died a few weeks later, on Nov. 25, 1916, and on Dec. 5 her body was laid to rest in Lewis, according to the Post. “I have long admired Inez Milholland, not just for
her contributions to women’s suffrage, but also for her work to promote civil rights, labor rights, prison reform and world peace,” Campbell said. “I knew about the effort to rename Mount Discovery as Mount Inez after her death but was mystified by the fact that today’s maps and other descriptions of the mountain continued to refer to it as Mount Discovery. I hoped that historical and legal research would provide the answer.” Campbell discovered that although the mountain was named in her honor locally, it was never changed at the federal level. After learning that, with support from local officials and residents, she submitted a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to formally change Mount Discovery’s name to Mount Inez. “As the nation prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment next year, it is especially fitting to recognize the contributions of Inez Milholland, a lawyer and one of the most prominent suffragists of her time,” Campbell said. The mountain was initially named “Discovery” because it was “a famous point to watch the British fleet during the Revolutionary War,” according to “Whispering Mountains,” a history of Lewis written by Marilyn Cross in 2005. Milholland’s father, John E. Milholland, was the inventor of the pneumatic tube. He purchased a part of Mount Discovery sometime before 1900 and established the Meadowmount Ranch. The Meadowmount Ranch was later leased by Ivan and Judith Galamian in 1944, who established the Meadowmount School of Music there.

FIRST TIMERS
The Bu yin g Process
Congratulations; youʼve decided to buy a home! It can be a scary process, but whether youʼre a first-time homebuyer or seasoned homeowner, itʼs good to know whatʼs ahead for you in the weeks to months youʼre looking for and purchasing a house.
U.S. News and World Report’s Guide to Buying a Home walks potential buyers through the steps, the first of which is to find a real estate agent. This professional can answer questions about the housing market, help you set a price and set up appointments to show houses, negotiate with the other party’s agent and walk you through the entire process. Finding a real estate agent you trust is critical; ask friends for recommendations and interview potential agents. Next, find a lender. Collecting the necessary paperwork and getting credit checks can take a little while, and many sellers require a pre-approval for the loan amount to entertain an offer. The lender can talk you through the different types of loans, how much you can afford based on your finances and any programs for which you may qualify. Make a list of what you want in a home and keep it close by as you’re browsing houses. When you visit houses, ask questions, check out all the nooks and crannies, turn on lights and the stove
and flush toilets. If you’re interested in a house, talk to neighbors about what the area is like, figure out what school district you’re in, how long your commute would be and what traffic is like during rush hour. Check your local police department’s website for crime statistics. When you’re ready to make an offer, get the pre-approval for that amount in hand. Your agent will do the necessary paperwork, though you’ll have dozens of papers to sign. You and the seller may go back and forth on the cost. When an offer is accepted, you’ll make a small escrow payment, then your agent will help you find an assessor to examine the house for problems, which you and the seller can then negotiate to get resolved. Your lender also will hire an appraiser to assess the value of the home; most lenders will not make loans for more than what the house is appraised for. At the end of the escrow period, you’ll go to the title company, sign more paperwork and pay closing costs and down payment.

N this cottage by the lake, the smallest of furnishings take the SPOTlight in the room and can spark up conversation. The spot table is one that can be dramatic and radically different in your interior space. Mixing unique pieces with rich texture, organic forms and metals, like bronze, set themselves apart. They can add opulence, quirkiness or even more, like a tactile experience. Petrified wood and white faux bois give a fresh take on nature that grabs the eye. As they say, it’s a conversation starter...
