Take that to Split Rock Road in Gabriels and go left. The Split Rock itself is on the left and soon you’re on Route 86 heading back to Saranac Lake. HILL FACTOR: Relatively flat until just before Gabriels. From there it’s a steady uphill until reaching the high point. TAKE A HIKE
Chasing waterfalls — and good outdoor behavior
T
By Zach Floss here is a specific type of frustration that only comes from watching other people behave with flagrant disregard. On a little hike in April, my partner and I got a taste of it. Having wandered a few miles through the woods to an incredible veil waterfall, we were standing on a vista overlooking the yawning chasm below when a group of eight boys came scrambling up from a section of trail that was very clearly marked “CLOSED,” even sporting a rope to bar passage. I have heard stories of people taking this path in winter and getting hopelessly stuck at the bottom because of their lack of preparedness and awareness. These kids did make the hike back up, barely sticking to thin dirt and wet rock in their tennis shoes. Ignoring even the concept of social distance, they came right up to us, breathing hard, shouting about “how crazy it was down there, bro.” Trying to regain a little peace and quiet, we made for the other side of the gorge. The trail led to a bridge that crosses the stream just above the falls; you could see right off the edge where the water pitched away into the void. We decided to get a little closer look, so we left the trail and carefully wandered through some of the season’s last snowbanks until we were able to get an incredible view out over the edge. After grabbing some photos, we noticed the group of boys had found the bridge. Seeing us, they promptly left the trail and smashed through the underbrush to get to where we were. Again, entirely ignoring the notion of social distance, they all but pushed past to find the view for themselves. The whole event set me spinning, but as we hiked out and debriefed the experience, my partner made an observation that I latched onto: People tend to copy the behaviors of others, especially in wild places. At first, I considered that sentence at
face value. Those kids had seen us off-trail and had taken none of the precaution we’d taken to get to the same spot. But then I had to consider the fact that while watching those ill-prepared kids come back up a closed trail, I had suddenly wanted all the more to go down and check it out for myself. What made that the case? Was I inspired by what they’d done? Was my interest piqued when I heard about what might be down at the bottom of that steep descent? Was I competing with them, subtly, somewhere in the back of my mind? More to the point, why was I tempted to ignore an obviously stated warning just because I saw someone else doing it? Someone, it might be added, that I stood in rather immediate judgment of for their lack of preparedness and general disregard for the integrity of the trail, their own safety or the well-being of others. Either way, I didn’t have a ready answer to any of these questions. While I didn’t ultimately follow in their footsteps, they wound up following mine. I have found that people are often quick to point fingers and slow to turn that finger back on themselves. I am no exception to this rule. Being governed by rules and regulations while you’re out exploring wild places might seem contrary to the notion of freedom in the forest, but setting a good example is critical. It can be difficult to bear this in mind consistently because, for many of us, our local trails feel like home. They’re places we know like the back of our hand and where we feel we can act freely. In truth, however, unless it’s on private land, everyone has the same right to access these places. As the present pandemic continues, more scrutiny is being observed as to how people use the land, where they’re coming from, and what they do when they’re there. This concern was embodied in what I saw while hiking on Saturday, but this also served as a reminder that we need to apply the same scrutiny to our own actions, pandemic or not.
HOMES THROUGH THE GENERATIONS
Histo ricHo m e C ha rm H
isto ricresid en tia l bu ild in gs a n d n eighbo rho o d s ha ve a certa in “je n e sa isq u o i” tha t a ppea lsto o u rrea lesta te d rea m s. You’ve seen historical homes on movies and TV. There is something about the architecture, the brick and the tree-lined streets that has us mentally moving in our furniture and imagining bringing groceries into a gorgeous, light-filled space. However, our imaginations have a way of glossing over the less glamorous aspects of historic living. If you are considering life in a historically registered abode, reflect on the following lifestyle features before signing on the dotted line. HIDDEN EX PEN S ES Have you looked into what the real estate taxes are for your coveted historic home? What about home insurance rates? Both can be astronomically high and are
above and beyond the sticker price of the home. It is important to carefully go over your finances to ensure you cannot only afford to purchase the home but to keep it. History costs. REPAIRS Having to make repairs to any home is unpleasant, but if your
building or home has been designated a landmark or holds a place on a historic register, it can be a logistical nightmare. Many city landmark commissions require tenants to preserve the historic look of a home or building by using as many historically accurate materials as possible, which can get
expensive very quickly. LAC K O F M O DERN C O N VEN IEN C ES Think central air conditioning. Think small closets. Think pre-war co-op with no elevator. On a beautiful spring day, it’s easy to think, “Oh, this place is definitely worth the sacrifice,” but life isn’t
perfect and day-to-day living is often led through many challenges. There may be less glamorous parts of “living historically” that you are overlooking. Check in with others who have made homes in historical houses. Hearing stories from them can sway your decision.

LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS
NCPR’s Brian Mann joins NPR full-time Longtime Adirondack bureau chief is now national network’s first addiction correspondent
A
fter 21 years of work as North Country Public Radio’s first Adirondack bureau chief, Brian Mann has been recruited to a new position at National Public Radio. He’s now NPR’s first full-time correspondent focused on addiction-related issues. “This is obviously a heartbreaking, challenging moment,” Mann said. “I look forward to helping NPR tell stories that really help people.” Although Mann will leave NCPR, he won’t leave the North Country. He will continue to work from his home in Westport. “Brian will still be heard regularly on our airwaves through the national programs we carry on North Country Public Radio,” said NCPR News Director David Sommerstein. “We’re proud of Brian’s chance to help with national coverage in this difficult time and glad he’ll be a part of our North Country world going forward.” Mann will pivot to cover the science, policy and human impact of addiction, building on his work over the last two years. “With the generous endorsement of North Country (Public) Radio, Brian has been reporting frequently on NPR on addiction and many of the lawsuits around the country. We are delighted that he will be joining us and will be able to devote his attention to the critical national beat full-time,” said Edith Chapin, executive editor of NPR.
“NCPR listeners have been rewarded for more than two decades with Brian’s reporting,” said Mitch Teich, NCPR station manager. “It’s sad that we’ll lose one of the most familiar voices in the region, but I’m delighted for Brian and delighted that listeners around the country will hear more of his remarkable work.” In addition to covering the Adirondack Park and its communities, Mann has contributed to coverage of breaking news coverage around the U.S., from historic flooding in Houston to mass shootings in Las Vegas and Parkland, Florida. Over the past year, Brian has covered litigation against pharmaceutical companies stemming from the national opioid crisis, positioning him to tackle the addiction beat. “Our coverage will examine how communities, scientists and civic leaders are grappling with addiction in the U.S. and abroad,” Mann explained. “My family has been deeply damaged by addiction,” Mann added. “I lost my father and my stepbrother to substance abuse. I’m excited by the challenge of breaking down some of the stigma around this part of our lives and helping people talk about addiction more factually.” Mann has won several Edward R. Murrow awards and is the author of the 2006 book “Welcome to the Homeland.” He worked for NCPR through the end of April and began full-time at NPR on May 11.

RIGHT: Keene Central School senior Isabella Pena Several Adirondack communities did special things in May to honor their high school seniors, who were robbed by the COVID-19 pandemic of traditional graduation ceremonies, proms and other traditions to conclude their secondary school careers. The town of Keene held a parade May 3 in which townspeople lined state Route 73 to cheer Keene Central School seniors as they drove by in their cars, escorted by police and fire vehicles. The Saranac Lake Central School District brought the parade to the seniors’ homes. In a caravan of buses and about 25 cars, school staff and faculty and visited each senior’s home May 5, covering about 120 miles as they spanned the largest school district in New York state, geographically. They briefly greeted the seniors and their families, caught up for a few moments, gave each one a lawn sign and took pictures.
