Winter Carnival has been a tradition in Saranac Lake since 1897, and this year’s 10-day festivities built all kinds of warm memories amid the cold, snowy weather. Carnival began Friday, Jan. 31 with the Coronation of the king and queen, reached its peak with the Gala Parade Saturday, Feb. 8 and closed with fireworks Sunday the 9th. This year’s theme, “Myths and Legends,” spawned all kinds of creativity, especially in parade cosumes and floats. Photos – Lou Reuter and Griffin Kelly

MALL little jewels of texture and shapes. Everyone has a name for these, but generally called a Pouf, an Ottoman or a Hassock. I like to use these with a chair to add contrasting design interest or next to your bed for an extra surface or in the living room as extra pull up seating. They come in handy in most rooms and that is why this should be a “must have” in your space.

New kids book ʻBear Goes Sugaringʼ promotes self-reliance By Griffin Kelly

M

axwell Eaton III has written children’s books about hippos, dolphins and crocodiles. For his latest, he wanted to cover a topic a little bit closer to his home in the Adirondacks. “I had been working on an idea with a bear that cuts some firewood and goes through the process of dropping a tree, bucking it up, splitting it, seasoning it,” he said. “I think it’s something that people around parts of the country aren’t familiar with. It gradually morphed into making maple syrup.” “Bear Goes Sugaring” presents the indepth process of making maple syrup in an easily understood narrative. The bear taps trees, builds an evaporator and boils maple syrup to perfection. All the while, her friends, a dog and a squirrel, scream about their hunger for pancakes. “I wanted an illustrated book that really spelled out how to make maple syrup,” Eaton said. “It is my belief that anyone can make maple syrup by picking up this book. “What appealed to me was a classroom being able to take on this kind of project.” Originally from Cornwall, Vermont, Eaton now lives in Wilmington. Like Vermont, northern New York is well known for its sugarhouses, and this year’s New York’s Maple Weekends are the third and fourth weekends in March. Eaton said sugaring lends itself nicely to an illustrated book. To make sure he got all the info and drawings correct, Eaton had the book fact-checked by Joseph

Orefice, who used to direct the Uihlein Maple Center and teach forestry at Paul Smith’s College. He’s now the director of forest and agricultural operations at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. The only tough part, Eaton said, was showing how and why trees produce sap, which scientists are still figuring out. “Wrapping your head around that and illustrating it in a way that is easier to grasp would be difficult, period,” he said, “but then, making it interesting and putting it into a picture book was a struggle. That’s something (Orefice) really helped me with in terms of the science and the mechanics.” At the end of the book, Eaton has an author’s note promoting organic lifestyles and doing things yourself. “No corporations. Just backyards, buckets, campfires and friends,” it says. Eaton said he thinks a sense of selfreliance is missing from today’s American culture and that making maple syrup is an approachable way to take that back. Whether it’s gardening, sugaring, home repairs, cutting firewood or brewing beer, Eaton said if it’s within his power to do it, he will. “I think it’s really important that kids and readers realize just how much power they have and to do things on their own and that they don’t need maple syrup from the grocery store. They can do it themselves,” he said. “Bear Goes Sugaring” can be found at the Bookstore Plus in Lake Placid or on penguinrandomhouse.com.

Meet Brendan Wiltse

Chief Steward of the AuSable River Watershed

LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

W

By Elizabeth Izzo iltse, the science and stewardship director for the Wilmington-based AuSable River Association, is known for his reports on the impacts of road salt contamination in Mirror Lake. It’s an issue of critical importance to the Lake Placid community, and his research on the issue has driven lawmakers to consider ways to protect the resource by paring down salt use. “My number-one goal right now is to stop being the guy that’s telling everyone all the things wrong with Mirror Lake,” he said, “and start being the guy that’s telling everyone that, ‘Hey, we’ve actually turned things around.’” Wiltse, 35, grew up in the city of Watertown, outside of the Adirondack Park. He attended Hudson Valley Community College and earned an associate’s degree in environmental science, but it was when he transferred to Paul Smith’s College that his interest in environmental science really blossomed. “I had some really great professors there, particularly Curt Stager,” he said. “He was one of my mentors when I was there, and he got me hooked on studying lakes, and particularly the history of them, which is what my graduate research was on.” He went on to study at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he earned a Ph.D in biology. “I was in graduate school up in Canada, but working still down here in Lake Placid for the Adirondack Mountain Club,” he said. “Just because I love the Adirondacks so much, I couldn’t get away completely.”

A position with the AuSable River Association happened to open up at the right time, in 2014. It’s a job that takes him to every corner of the AuSable River watershed. Some days he’s out in the field, collecting water samples from Mirror Lake or one of the other 30 streams the association monitors. Other days, he’s at the association’s Wilmington headquarters, sitting in front of a computer, analyzing and compiling data. “A big part of my job is communicating that science to all kinds of stakeholders and hopefully seeing that science used by those stakeholders to make our lakes and rivers either better or better protected,” he said. There are some challenges to clearly communicating the threats to the watershed. Simplifying complicated chemistry is a big one, he said. But Wiltse loves his job. Despite his role as a director, he still gets to venture outside and work directly with lakes and streams. Working with Mirror Lake in particular, he said, presents a unique opportunity. “It’s the center of Lake Placid. Out of all of the places that I’ve worked — and I’ve worked on dozens of lakes across North America — I don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere where I can be collecting a water sample in the middle of winter and have, like, three or four people ice skate up to me, asking me what I’m doing,” he said. “Or that I have to worry about hitting an Ironman athlete training with my canoe while I’m headed out to collect a water sample. It really does feel like it’s the center of the community.”
