WORKING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

Meet Mirror Lake’s Watershed Steward

L

By Elizabeth Izzo

ake Placid native Sophie Morelli has fond memories of working on her Regents exams in high school and, after completing them, leaping into the cool water of Mirror Lake. The 23-year-old has had plenty of chances to enjoy this waterbody at the center of the village while growing up here. Now she has the opportunity to help protect it. Morelli, a 2016 Lake Placid High School graduate, has been chosen as Mirror Lake’s firstever watershed steward, a new position created by the Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College thanks to some funding through the North Elba Local Enhancement and Advancement Fund. This past weekend was her first of the season at Mirror Lake. Locals may have spotted her in Peacock Park, close to the municipal beach. This isn’t Morelli’s first year as a steward. She’s worked at other Lake Placid boat launches through AWI for a few years. “There’s obviously not as much boat traffic (at Mirror Lake) than maybe the other places on Lake Placid, but I’m really happy that we get to have someone here, and I’m happy that person is me,” Morelli said. “If there were anything that would inhibit our lake, that would be so sad for all of the local people and, of course, the tourists.” It may seem a little strange that someone who studied English and secondary education at SUNY Potsdam — and who released her own book of poetry, “Bad Habits” — may be doing

this job, but Morelli said she’s always been interested in conservation and the environment. Serving as a watershed steward through AWI has allowed her to learn about something she wasn’t able to at Potsdam. “This has been something that’s really valuable to me and really supplemental,” she said. “Everything I’ve learned about this job, I feel that’s information I can use for a long time.” Mirror Lake sees exclusively nonmotorized boats, so the threat of invasive species is somewhat diminished. Invasive species are easier to spot on non-motorized boats because there are fewer nooks and crannies where they may be latched onto the boat — no propellers, no motors, no bait wells, according to Morelli. Though the threat is lessened, it does exist. Morelli’s boat inspections aren’t mandatory, but according to Morelli, most people have been very receptive. At Mirror Lake, the inspections are a quick process. She asks boaters questions, such as the last waterbody they were paddling. If a person does have an invasive species on their boat, Morelli can point them to a free boat decontamination site just a few minutes away, at the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s boat launch at Lake Placid lake. “There’s a lot of boats that come in and out of this area,” Morelli said. “It feels really cool to be taking one extra step to keeping the lake a little cleaner.” Morelli will be stationed on Mirror Lake from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends this summer at Peacock Park near the tennis courts.

Sophie Morelli is seen here at the municipal beach on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid. (Enterprise photo — Elizabeth Izzo)

But as you tackle that electrical update or new tiled shower, understand that dealing with home improvement projects requires safety and precautions. Check out the following findings regarding the most common homeowner injuries from Porch.com, a home services company connecting homeowners with high-quality home improvement professionals. • Ladder accidents result in nearly 200,000 emergency room visits every year. Ladders also kill about 300 people annually. • All in all, using a ladder means a 1 in 1,680 chance of an ER visit, according to the report. • Hardware like nails and screws cause 124,000 ER visits annually and a 1 in 2,615 chance at injury. • Lawn mowers cause nearly 90,000 trips to the ER. • Homeowners’ fingers, arms, eyes, face, feet and the upper torso are most at risk. • About 70 percent of all home repair-related ER visits happen to males, with men 50 to 59 most at risk. • Home repair injuries occur most often on Saturdays and Mondays and in the summer months of June, July and September. RESEARCH IS KEY When it comes to preventing injuries on your home improvement projects, making sure you’re prepared is key. Each project requires unique skills and knowledge, so experts recommend

spending some time doing a little research before you start. You can find helpful videos online or even pick the brain of some of your handier friends before getting started. Visit your local hardware store to chat with associates about your project. The more time you put into researching your project, the less risk you put yourself at during the actual execution of the job. SAFETY GEAR Depending on the tasks involved, it’s likely you’ll need some safety gear to protect yourself from flying objects, dust or debris. Even for homeowners experienced in working on their own projects, safety gear is key to preventing injuries. Here are a few pieces of gear no DIYer should be without: protective gloves with reinforced palms, safety glasses, ear protection, a hard hat, a dust mask, non-slip, closed-toe shoes, flame-

resistant coveralls and harness and safety rope. Also, make sure your home is equipped with a full first aid kit as well as fire extinguishers or blankets. Have a list of emergency numbers ready just in case things do get out of hand. This list should include professional tradespeople, your local fire department and the poison help line. KNOW WHEN TO CALL FOR HELP Even the handiest of DIYers need help from time to time. Plumbing and especially electrical are two areas where it’s advised to depend on an expert. Even on relatively smaller projects, the help of a licensed local expert can make all the difference. You may be out some cash in the long run, but you’ll have confidence that the job will be completed according to current health and safety codes.

Fishing for customers, catching a phenomenon

S

By Elizabeth Izzo

potting the cash at the intersection of Broadway and Main Street, Dan Sporn, owner of the Goody Goody’s toy store in Saranac Lake, bent down to pick it up. Being the good citizen that he is, he said he wanted to return it to its rightful owner. What Sporn didn’t know is that the dollar was attached to a fishing line, and he was about to star in a viral prank video with more than 1.6 million views on Tik Tok, a popular social media platform. “I thought I should bend over and give it to Blue Line (Sports) because someone obviously dropped it,” Sporn said. “I bent over, and it just disappeared.” The video shows Sporn, looking confused, stepping into Blue Line Sports to search for the dollar before looking up, and seeing he’d been pranked. “Well, come on in, sir, how can I help you?” Ryan Baker, a fishing guide with Adirondack TrOutfitters who works at Blue Line Sports, told Sporn. In the video, the camera pans over to show Baker by the store’s cash register, holding a fishing pole with the dollar attached. Sporn laughs hard and looks around the store. “I was just like, ‘Oh, those little boys,’” Sporn said. “It was all in good fun.” The dollar-on-a-string prank was set up by Baker and his roommate Reid Mason, who is also a fishing guide with Adirondack TrOutfitters. Baker and Mason pranked over a dozen people on June 16. Mason, who had filmed the pranks, compiled a few of the reactions

in a video — including Sporn’s, plus the reaction of John Dimon, who owns the Human Power Planet Earth bike shop a few doors down — and set it to a remix of a song from the Nickelodeon show “SpongeBob SquarePants,” a popular choice for comedy videos on Tik Tok. Mason posted it on his Tik Tok account under the name “@up2somthinfishy.” The Tik Tok algorithm brought the video onto the “for you” page — which is like the Timeline on Facebook or the Explore page on Instagram, but features short videos that Tik Tok believes a user would like. Making it on the “for you” page often leads to a person’s Tik Tok getting massive exposure. As of Friday, Mason and Baker’s Tik Tok had garnered over 1.6 million views and had been liked more than a quarter of a million times. Speaking with a reporter while fishing from Saranac Lake’s River Walk on June 18, Baker said he and his roommate were just messing around and trying to drum up some business for the shop. “We just figured, let’s keep fishing,” he said. “We’re always fishing. So I put a dollar bill on the line and put it out on the sidewalk.” As he spoke to the reporter, Baker reeled in a smallmouth bass from the Saranac River. He quickly took the fish into his hand, freed it and threw it back into the water. Mason’s Tik Tok account had something like 50 followers before this video went viral, according to Baker. Overnight, he gained more than 1,900 followers.
