By Aaron Cerbone hen cousins Mike Jaworski, Dan Fronhofer and Paul Fronhofer came out of the woods at the Esther Mountain trailhead Thursday, June 18, they were drained. They had not slept in over 24 hours, they had eaten all but a smidgen of their food, and they had hiked all 46 High Peaks in six days, five hours and 36 minutes a new record. The previous official record was set in July 2019 by SUNY Cortland graduates Michael Jock and Lukas Wear at six days, 23 hours and 45 minutes. Jaworski had set a different kind of record in January this year, hiking the 46 with Nick Glasser in what was possibly the first supported High Peaks thruhike ever in winter. On June 18, the three cousins emerged from their 198-mile, unsupported hike at 10:18 a.m. to a crowd of family and friends waiting for them. Their route, tracked by a SPOT GPS tracker, started at Donaldson Mountain in the western-most portion of the High Peaks. They then traveled south and east before heading back west and then north. Jaworski, 29, of Greenwich, had become a 46er on his winter hike. Dan Fronhofer, 38, of Saratoga Springs, said he had hiked around 20 of the High Peaks while training for this trip. Paul Fronhofer, 42, of Moreau, said he had never hiked a High Peak before; he became a 46er on his first outing. The three had just about eaten the last of their food
a couple of miles up the trial. While they had planned for each to have 5,000 calories a day, when they woke up at 7 a.m. Wednesday, they only had 3,500 each. “I have about 30 sunflower seeds left,” Paul said. Because of their lack of food and their anxiousness to reach the finish line, on their last night, Wednesday, they forsook sleeping and just hiked through the night. Dan said Paul kept him up by singing grunge tunes. They took two-minute rests every half-hour until the sun came up, setting down their loads, resting their eyes and backs against trees until a timer went off, and then dutifully shouldering their packs and continuing on. They had started the hike with a big day, hitting the trail at 4:42 a.m. because they needed to get farther than Bradley Pond before camping for the night to start ahead of previous record-setters. They had mostly perfect weather for the trek, except a snowfall on Saturday, which they said they were not prepared for. Setting out on an unassisted hike, carrying all their supplies in their packs, “It was a little nerve-wracking driving away from the house,” Jaworski said. He said he just wished he had brought soap. All three were visibly sore at the end, and Jaworski said his knees felt like they were being tightened in a vice. Everyone cheered when they popped champagne to celebrate, but Jaworski said he preferred popping the blisters on his feet.

Coach Chadd Cassidy’s Adirondack Lightning under-14 baseball team began its summer season on Monday, July 6 against the Champlain Cougars at the Lake Placid Central School ball field. It was the first game in Lake Placid since last summer, before the coronavirus pandemic hit in March. School spring sports were canceled as COVID-19 precautions were instituted, but on July 6, many low-risk recreational and sports activities were allowed to resume, including youth baseball. There are numerous state-mandated changes this year amid the pandemic. For example, all players will have their own batting helmets; players who touch a ball during an inning on defense are required to use hand sanitizer when they leave the field; and a first baseman must wear a face mask with a runner on base. Olympian Andrea Kilbourne-Hill named new St. Bernard’s School Principal

Ray Dora, principal of St. Bernard’s School in Saranac Lake from January 2011 until last week, sits in the school library.
R
ay Dora says he wanted to make sure the person who succeeded him as principal of St. Bernard’s School was well known by the community, as well as being qualified. He got that with Andrea Kilbourne-Hill, on many levels. Hired in late June as the next head of this Catholic elementary school, she grew up in Saranac Lake, went to St. Bernard’s and has taught there for the last four years. But if that isn’t enough, she is more widely known as a hockey player with the U.S. national team, winning a silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. A plaque with her name adorns the front of the town hall downtown, part of Saranac Lake’s Walk of Fame. “The community knows the dedication and hard work, all of those things she’s put into (hockey),” said Rev. Martin Cline, pastor of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. But people also know of her dedication as a
teacher and mother, he added. “Those things echo through all the steps of her life,” he said. Cline said Catholic schools often lose enrollment when they change principals because parents aren’t sure about the new one, but he doesn’t expect that to happen here. That would be good, because this school more than doubled its enrollment under Dora’s nine-and-ahalf years of leadership. It was close to the brink when he took over in January 2010. For the coming fall, the school has 61 enrolled so far. Dora noted a general decline in school-age children throughout the region, and he and KilbourneHill said the coronavirus is also a factor, leading some families to hold out or consider home-schooling or wait a year to start younger kindergartners. Going forward, Kilbourne-Hill said, “My biggest goal is to really firm up the parish and school connection. ... The families that come to St. Bernard’s, they really feel like it’s their school, and they have a lot of pride and ownership in that, and I would love for everyone in the parish to have that same feeling.” When she went there as a girl, “It felt like a home away from home, and the people here felt like aunts and uncles, not necessarily teachers. It really was a family, and I think that that is the same.” After Kilbourne-Hill’s hockey career ended and she returned home, she taught at St. Agnes School for three years and then for nine years at Northwood School in Lake Placid, where she had been a student. Her job there largely consisted of coaching hockey, and when the frequent travel wore her down, she switched to St. Bernard’s in 2016, teaching fourth grade. She also helped launch the Paul Smith’s College women’s hockey program in recent years. She said she has a few “crazy ideas” she’d like to implement at St. Bernard’s, such as an outdoor classroom and enhanced technology, but “that strong foundation of faith and education is not going to change.”
