BUYING TIPS
Don’t Skip the Inspection
ADOBESTOCK®
So, you’ve finally found your forever home. Don’t be afraid to have someone take a closer look at it before you buy, just to make sure there aren’t huge unseen issues. If you unwittingly buy alemon of a house, forever might end sooner than you think. Here’s how to get the peace of mind that comes with a thorough pre-purchase inspection. WHAT TO ASK Begin by asking your potential home inspector if he or she is certified and licensed. Some states don’t require that, but this documentation works as an important safeguard for you. You’ll know they’ve been professionally trained to do the work. Ask if they’re bonded and insured; this protects both of you if there is a mistake or something missed in the
inspection. More generally, you might also ask how long the inspection will take. If the answer is less than two hours, you can be assured that they aren’t doing a thorough enough job. Finally, make sure they provide a full report — with pictures — after the inspection. You’ll need it before pursuing any remedy. WHAT THEY DO A licensed home inspector will look at the home without benefit of your rose-colored glasses, searching for maintenance problems, unscrupulous contractor behavior, or other issues that can have huge financial implications for you as a new owner. They’ll be aware of local codes, and provide up-to-dateinformationonthecondition of everything from the foundation to roof — including electrical, appliances and plumbing. They occasionally find issues that are so serious that they
scuttle buyers contracts, though more often these reports are used to strike deals for repairs. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Pay special attention to notes from your inspector involving wiring or plumbing, as these jobs can have associated costs in the hundreds — or thousands — of dollars. New builds may also trigger questions about adherence to local codes, a red flag for any potential buyer. Often these issues can be avoided in advance by checking a contractor’s references through feedback forums on sites such as Yelp, Google or Angie’s List where discussions are held by former clients. Secure a neutral inspector with no ties to the builder so you can be assured he evaluates everything impartially. Your real-estate agent can help, if you’re moving to a new area and are unsure who to hire.

LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS
Local chefs find love and southern charm in Lake Placid By Lauren Yates
L
ocal chefs and life partners Meghan and Jonathan Gravatt’s love story, and their love of the Adirondacks, started with food.
Meghan grew up in a working class community in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Jonathan grew up in “the sticks” of Lakeland, Florida, but the couple found each other while cooking in Lake Placid. Meghan moved to the area with her mom and step dad when she was 16, and Jonathan made his way up a few years later on a road trip that turned into a permanent relocation. Despite the initial shock of the bitter winters to their southern roots, they both fell in love with the area and started to thrive here. Jonathan said he moved here to cook at the Lake Placid Lodge, and he eventually started a private chef company. Once, when he needed an assistant for a private chef job, it was Meghan who came to help out. They’ve been cooking together ever since. Jonathan said he grew up watching the show “The Frugal Gourmet.” He admired the chefs on the show, who displayed an almost evangelical zeal for the dishes they were creating. He wanted to replicate that enthusiasm. Jonathan said he went to college for a bit, but he “always came back to food.” It was in his blood, he said — the focus of every celebration and family function. “So I just dug into anything food, and that’s all I did,” he said. Creating a life around food, he said, isn’t complex or romantic — he studied cookbooks and worked hard to hone his skills. However, his love
of food did help him to romance Meghan. Jonathan said she was impressed by his cookbook collection and well-stocked kitchen. “She loved my kitchen before she loved me,” he said. Jonathan’s love of food rubbed off on Meghan, who said she’s always had a love of learning things hands-on. They worked together as private chefs, then as caterers, and now they’re on to their next adventure as barbecue smokers. Now, they want to bring a piece of the south to the North Country; the Gravatts expect to open their new restaurant, West Shore BBQ, in Lake Placid this summer. Meghan said that she and Jonathan’s dreams morphed together after they met. They’re a different couple, Jonathan said — attached at the hip. “Some say codependent,” he said. “I say I like her.” Lake Placid became home for the Gravatts when they realized they’d lived here longer than they had in Florida. They got married here, they’re raising two daughters here and they’re building a business here — this is their community now. Jonathan said it’s good having Meghan as a best friend, work friend, life partner and ski buddy here through the hard times, especially in the “crazy industry” of food. When Jonathan bolts out of bed at 3 a.m. with new business dreams and ambitions, Meghan’s always there to learn how to make them a reality. “We’re true partners,” Jonathan said.

Lake Placid Students Create Mural for Local Ambulance Service
A
By Lauren Yates
group of Lake Placid teenagers’ artistic talents are now on display in a mural above the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service building on Mill Pond Drive. The mural project, organized by the Lake Placid/Wilmington Connecting Youth and Community Coalition, was unveiled on June 6,
more than two years after the project’s inception. The mural features the emergency medical services Star of Life symbol in various shades of blue, with accents of red and yellow. It’s made out of 100 square tiles that were painted by 100 Lake Placid Middle-High School students. CYC president Tina Clark said that kids were just starting on the project in early 2020 when
represent her love of the sport — but she couldn’t remember when; sixth or seventh grade. She finished her tile ahead of the pandemic, and she said she completely forgot about the mural while school went virtual. June 6 was her first time seeing the completed project. “It looks really cool,” she said. “I just thought I was doing, like, a random brick for some random thing. But now, seeing it, I really get it — why it’s so important to do these things.” CYC Art Director Naj Wikoff said he came up with the idea for the mural while the ambulance service building was under construction. He said he’d drive by and think that no one would know there’s an ambulance service there — he thought the building needed a marker. CYC has already supported murals at the Wilmington Youth Center, the Shipman Youth Center in Lake Placid and the Whiteface Ski Center, so Wikoff thought the ambulance service building would be the perfect location for a new one. Wikoff approached Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service President Larry Brockaway, along with LPMHS art teachers Alan Robinson and Sandy Huber, about the project, and everyone was on board. For Wikoff, it’s a big plus that the mural showcases youth art in the From left, Lake Placid Middle-High School art teachers community. He said kids make art all Sandy Huber and Alan Robinson stand with CYC Art the time in school, but their work Director Naj Wikoff and Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance often goes unseen. He hoped that the Service President Larry Brockaway in front of the mural would make kids feel included ambulance service building’s new mural. in the landscape of the community. “Kids are valuable, and they have a voice, and they have talents,” Wikoff said. “And this is our opportunity to the coronavirus started making its way through the showcase them, so they can feel good about being a area and in-person classes ended temporarily. When part of this community.” the students returned to school, she said, the project wasn’t a top priority at first. The mural tiles sat in CYC’s mission is to foster community the school’s art room for a while. support for kids in Lake Placid and Wilmington, Ninth-grader Norah Galvin said she painted and Clark said that’s the purpose of the new mural. one of the tiles — which pictures a volleyball to She said she wants kids to feel like they matter.
