Stag Brook Falls DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: 1.0 mile, round-trip DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of state Route 73 and Route 86 in Lake Placid, follow Route 86 toward Wilmington. Continue for 9.2 miles to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. Turn into the center and park in the lot on the right. You will need to park in the main lot for the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center and hike the road up to the center. As you cross the bridge, there will be the main building on your left and another building straight ahead. Walk to the left of the secondary building and up the gravel road. The trail is at the top of the gravel road, a marker on a power pole is its start. Silver Lake Mountain DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: 1.8 miles, round-trip DIRECTIONS: From the four-corner intersection in the village of Wilmington head north onto Bonnieview Road. Follow this to its end at Silver Lake Road. Take a left onto Silver Lake Road and continue for just under 6 miles to the trailhead on the right. Bear Den Mountain DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: 4.5 miles, round-trip DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of state Route 73 and Route 86 in Lake Placid, follow Route 86 toward Wilmington. Continue for 9.2 miles to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. Turn into the center and follow the road around to the right and to the Bear Den lot.

Whiteface Mountain DIFFICULTY: Difficult DISTANCE: 9.0 miles, round-trip DIRECTIONS: In Wilmington from the four-way stop sign follow Route 431 (Whiteface Mountain Road). Follow this for 2.4 miles to the Atmospheric Science Research Center Road on the left. Follow this road around the one-way roundabout to the trail on the right, just past a dirt road that descends into the woods.

Silver Lake Bog and Bluffs DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: 3.0 miles, round-trip DIRECTIONS: From the four corners in Wilmington, drive northeast along Bonnieview Road (county Route 19). Continue to the end of the road to Silver Lake Road (CR17). Once there turn left and drive toward Silver Lake. Stay on Silver Lake Road for just under 7 miles to Union Falls Road on the left. Follow Union Falls Road for 1.2 miles to Hawkeye Road on the left. Turn down Hawkeye Road for a short distance to the trailhead on the right.

Community mourns for Tina Leonard, who never lost sight of what’s important in life By Andy Flynn

Independent. Fearless. Stubborn.

When it came to Tina Leonard’s eight years of blindness, these are some of the words that help describe her best. The Lake Placid real estate broker — who died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 26 at the age of 63 — didn’t let blindness stop her from establishing her own business, giving back to the community or being the best mother, wife, grandmother and sister she could be. “She didn’t let her troubles in life define her. She still found a way to persevere,” said Heather Perkins, co-president of the Lake Placid Rotary Club, where Leonard was a member for almost 30 years. In 2013, Leonard lost most of her sight due to complications from glaucoma. Even though she had to make major adjustments in her life, she never slowed down. In her own words — on the Tina Leonard Real Estate website on Sept. 14 — she began her first and only blog entry with a quick introduction: “I may be blind but my name is still Tina Leonard. “I’ve learned to be blind and therefore I can help people understand things like being patient, learning to be detail oriented and learning to listen amongst many other things.” Tina Marie Wilson was born on March 18, 1958, in Lake Placid, the daughter of Donald Wilson and Gayle Wilson Trombley. She was a 1975 graduate of the Lake Placid High School. She worked at local businesses such as Howard Johnson’s restaurant and Key Bank before pursuing a career in real estate, on staff for many years at The Prudential Terry Horrocks Real Estate office on Main Street. In 2016, she opened Tina Leonard Real Estate in an office at the back of her McKinley Street home, specializing in real estate sales and rentals. While Leonard was well known in the real estate field — being active with the Northern Adirondack Board of Realtors (2000-2001 president)

When thinking about the Rotary Club meetings, Perkins thought of a word to describe Leonard: “creative.” “She just always had great ideas,” Perkins said. “We’d say, ‘How are we going to pull this off?’ And Tina would find a way to pull it off. ... I feel like we are at such a loss, losing her. She was a huge part of our club and how we did the things we did.” “Service above self” is Rotary International’s main motto, and those are words Leonard lived by every day.

UPS driver makes special connections with Lake Placid dogs By Lauren Yates

E

veryone’s barking over Peter Baker. One of Lake Placid’s UPS delivery drivers, Baker is a dog person, and it shows. He went viral on the UPS Dogs Facebook page when North Elba Transfer Station Supervisor Shannon Porter posted a photo of him with her dog Milo, who was recently diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness. Comments on the post also mentioned Baker’s fellow UPS driver in Lake Placid, Jeffrey Rock, as having a special bond with dogs along his route. Baker said he is “100%” a dog person. When he was growing up, his family had a cat. He loved the cat, but he always wanted a dog. Now, he has an 11-year-old dog named Bonnie, and he said the part-pug, part-Jack Russell terrier is like family. “I don’t have any kids, so she’s my kid,” he said. Unlike Bonnie, Baker is running most days — to and from his UPS truck — but he still makes time to stop and pass out biscuits to the neighborhood dogs. “He hustles,” Porter said. Baker lives in Peru, but he makes his way from the Plattsburgh UPS hub to Lake Placid for his route. Baker said that greeting the dogs is a highlight of his job, but Milo was one dog he’d go see off the clock. About a year ago, after beating cancer, Milo

was diagnosed with geriatric laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy. Porter made the necessary lifestyle adjustments for Milo to help him get on top of his illness, but recently she found another mass on his body. She said it came on so quickly and it was so big that she knew Milo’s time was limited. Porter took the viral photos of Milo and Baker the morning of Sept. 10, and that afternoon Baker stopped by Milo’s again on his break. Baker hopped out of his truck to greet Milo where he laid on the ground, and even though Milo couldn’t move much, his tail was still wagging while he got love and treats. That night, Porter told Baker it might be the last time he saw Milo. And after he got home from his shift, he received a text that read, “Milo’s gone.” Baker said he’ll never forget the image of Milo resting his face in Porter’s hand as he left. Baker left a comment on the UPS Dogs post before he learned of Milo’s passing: “Milo will always have a very special spot in my heart! I can’t imagine the day I pull up and he doesn’t come running out to see me! He is one very special and happy dog!” In late September, Baker learned that his dog Bonnie has a patch of cancer. Porter said that even though their dogs have been through so much, she’s glad that they found supportive friends in each other.
