House Painting Hints From an Artist By Kelly Carroll

P

icking paint colors for a house can be a difficult endeavor for homeowners, but if they plan ahead, they can spend less time wading through paint swatches and more time updating their space. Georgeanne Gaffney, originally from Baltimore, is an artist living in Saranac Lake who works off of photographs to create portrait and landscape paintings. Her process includes the layering of several paints and glazes to make works of art that are full of color and texture while maintaining an aged effect. Occasionally, she consults and is commissioned for decorative finishes in houses and she said there are several factors a homeowner has to consider before choosing a color.

Before painting, a person should have a general overview of what the room is going to look like and what is going to be in it, she said. “The surroundings can affect color reflection or color dominance,” she said. “If you want the color to be a really intense part of the room or you want the color to fade into the background, those are all things to think about ahead of time. “You also have to think of the flow, if you’re working on an entire home, how the rooms all work together so it’s not disjointed or piecey. Even if you have a high contrast, there should be some elements that tie everything together.” As far as choosing a color for a room, Gaffney said earth tones are popular right now with greens, browns and some reds for accents. Creams and offwhites continue to be favorites as people like

neutral colors, but Gaffney said style really varies from client to client. “Usually you stay away from complementary colors, because they’re complementary and they make each other jump out, Gaffney said. “So keeping things a little bit more subdued and natural is sometimes best.” Once a homeowner has a basic color idea, Gaffney said they should take the time to think about it, look at the color consistently and take photographs. “When I do consulting, I’ll pick out a whole range of colors and I’ll paint them on boards bigger than the little chips you see in the color decks,” she said. “The chips are hard for some people to just pick straight out and imagine what the color is going to look like really big, so I’ll do bigger boards that are usually a footby- a- foot or sometimes larger.” Gaffney emphasized that lighting is one of the most important factors when finally choosing a color, because as the lighting changes, so does the color. “I have clients look at the color at all times of the

day and move the boards around the room,” she said, “because sometimes in the morning, it’s really bright, and it can make a color look garish. And in the night time, the artificial light can change the color, so that’s definitely one rule of thumb I suggest for people.” If a homeowner goes through the process and isn’t pleased with their new color, Gaffney said they shouldn’t worry. “You can always paint over paint, so it’s forgiving in that way.”

Getting Crafty for Carnival Heating business builds some of Saranac Lake’s hottest parade floats By Emily R. Luxford

(Photo — Shawn Kittle

n a town that prides itself on an active sense of community, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is one of the most important events of the season. There is a lot to see at this 10day festival, such as the Ice Palace, fireworks, winter-style competitions and the Gala Parade. Nothing says community spirit like a good parade — not only in the parade itself but in the preparation. Parade floats take a lot of time and creativity, but who is responsible for them? Dan Reilly of HomEnergy Services, a Saranac Lake-based business that specializes in heating fuel and equipment, has been building floats on and off for 20 years. “Float building started out as a fun way to involve our children in the parade,” Reilly said. “It has certainly grown over the years.” HomEnergy’s past floats have been among the biggest in each parade, featuring gigantic figures such as Mighty Mouse, to go with last year’s “Superheroes and Villains” carnival theme, and a dragon for the 2014 “Celtic Carnival.” It takes more than one creative mind to come up with such ideas. Reilly, his wife Aggie Pelletieri and friends Lori and Don Rumble brainstorm over dinner, and then they bring their imaginings to fruition after business hours and on weekends. “We have a key group of volunteers and others who come and go, including some employees,” Reilly explains. A float takes a lot of time and patience as well as materials — from the wood to make the

frame that goes over the vehicle to the paper, backed with cloth for strength. It’s quite the family affair, too, with costumes created by Reilly’s mother-inlaw Sully Pelletieri. What’s more, he said, “we like special effects, so over the years we have designed and

built a couple of confetti guns and smoke machines.” When asked what Reilly’s favorite float is, he admits that “everyone has their favorite,” but his is the 2001 “Glory Train,” which featured live musicians. “It’s important to be visually impressive,” Reilly said, “but to also make a lot of noise.” With all the fire trucks and bands playing, a float has to compete for people’s attention. Mark you calendar to join in on the festivities from the Coronation show starting Friday, Feb. 3 through the storming of the Ice Palace with fireworks and slide show at dusk on Sunday, Feb. 12. Saranac Lake has attracted many to settle down in this small community. Engage in the contagious spirit, great quality of life and events related to art, music, history and wellness. Check out the website for a detailed schedule at www. saranaclakewintercarnival.com

I Love New York Ads Show Ice Palace, Whiteface By Kelly Carroll SARANAC LAKE - The Ice Palace and Whiteface Mountain Ski Center will soon be seen on television sets across the Northeast as part of the state’s new winter tourism campaign. The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival’s main attraction, lit up beneath a firework show, leads off a new 30-second I Love New York advertisement to promote winter destinations in the state. “It’s great, and I Love New York has always been very supportive in helping to promote the Carnival,” said Colleen O’Neill, the Winter Carnival Committee’s publicity chair. “They recognize that what we’re doing is so unique here, that more people should know about it and more people should visit. As widely known as we are by many people, there’s still a lot people that find out about the Ice Palace, and they immediately want to visit. The marketing campaign also includes a second advertisement focused on winter sports and recreation, which includes the state-owned Whiteface in Wilmington and Gore Mountain in North Creek, as well as West Mountain in Queensbury, Kissing Bridge in Glenwood and Plattekill in Roxbury. It also shows snowmobiling in Allegheny State Park in Salamanca and ice skating at Canalside in Buffalo. Both ads end with the slogan, “It’s all here. It’s ONLY here.” “The marketing campaign, the whole point of it is showing all the things that you can only find in New York state,” O’Neill said. “I think people don’t realize, especially if they’ve never been to the Adirondacks, there’s so much to offer here as far as recreational opportunities.” The ad campaign will run until Feb. 19 in markets including New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Connecticut, as well as Montreal and Toronto in Canada. Winter travel accounts for 21 percent of New York’s total tourism and contributed more than $13 billion in direct visitor spending in 2015.
