ACTIVITY: Hiking DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: 8 to 10 miles, round trip DIRECTIONS: This hike can be found out of the Adirondack Mountain Reserve which is in St. Huberts, just south of Keene Valley. Parking for the start of this hike is located across state Route 73 from the Roaring Brook Falls and Giant Mountain trailheads.

ACTIVITY: Hiking DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: Less than a mile DIRECTIONS: Locate the Flume parking outside of Wilmington on state Route 86. Parking is available on both sides of the road.

High Falls Gorge

ACTIVITY: Hiking DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: Varies, but no more than a mile DIRECTIONS: High Falls Gorge is located just under 5 miles from the Wilmington town center on state Route 86.

The impacts that these individuals had on this profession, as well as the relationships they created and fostered, inspire us to honor them and their legacy. We miss them dearly…. Bruce Ware- March 7, 1957- October 24, 2020 Bruce opened Venture North Associates in 1997 and was a resident of Westport, NY with his wife and partner of 38 years, also a REALTOR®, Carolyn Ware, Bruce was a past president of NABOR in 2005 and 2006. We truly miss Bruce’s positive outlook and optimism on life, but his smile lives on in all of our memories. Tina Leonard- March 18,1958- September 26, 2021 Tina was a lifelong resident and community activist of the village of Lake Placid, with her husband of 42 years, Joe. Tina believed in giving back and was active in LP Rotary Club, Shipman Youth Center and the Tri-Lake Business Networking Group. Tina was a profession REALTOR® and specialized in long-term rentals. She started her own company, Tina Leonard Real Estate, LLC in 2018. We all looked up to Tina in the perseverance she had to a very debilitating disability. We miss her dearly. Phil Thayer- April 4, 1944- November 29, 2021 After his achievements and service to the US Air Force, Phil came to Lake Placid with his wife, Claire of 46 years, and they raised a family. Phil was an active member of his faith, and started his business, Lake Placid Real Estate, in 1979. Phil mentored other agents in a sales style that was kind and respectable. His contribution to the industry in Lake Placid is forever appreciated.

Homebuying Mistakes It’s easy to become enthralled with an available property, in a real-estate version of love at first sight. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of a colonial, or can’t wait to spend afternoons at the nearby beach. But some very real issues can lurk just below the surface of your so-called dream home, turning that impulse purchase into a nightmare scenario. Here are a few home-buying mistakes to avoid.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE COMMUTE The best bargains are typically far away from downtown, where home buyers get more bang for their buck. Don’t let the allure of more land and square footage obscure a difficult everyday issue associated with suburban or exurban living: the long commute. Make sure you’re not spending more time and money (in the form of increased fuel costs, or public transit fare) than you want trying to get back to work, leisure and retail options. Map out personal routes, or study train or bus schedules. Also be aware of area traffic patterns, since you’re probably not the only one who decided to maximize their buying power by leaving the city center.

TAKE A LOOK AROUND Your purchase option might be priced wrong due to the community that surrounds it. Perhaps the property is too expensive, because you’re looking at the nicest house on an otherwise middle-of-the-road neighborhood. Maybe the house is only available because of out-migration to another, more preferable area for potential homebuyers. Adjustable rate loans are geared for more transient buyers who know they’ll be moving soon. The state Olympic Regional Development Authority Sunday, Jan. 2 recognized two-time Olympic medalist Andrew Weibrecht, of Lake Placid, with the name of Whiteface Mountain’s new chairlift and with the XLIQI SJ MXW YTHEXIH VEGI ½RMWL EVIRE Weibrecht is a three-time Olympian, a native of Lake Placid, and a lifelong skier of Whiteface. He won a silver medal in Sochi in 2014 and a bronze medal in Vancouver in 2010, both in super-G. The bottom of the downhill course features a historic scoreboard that has been wrapped in signage celebrating Weibrecht. The updated scoreboard also includes an announcement of the upcoming FISU World University Games, which will begin at several venues including Whiteface Mountain in one year. The new quad out of the Base Area that services the arena is named “Warhorse,” which is Weibrecht’s nickname because of his reputation for skillfully attacking the mountain when he races. To commemorate the designation of the lift and arena, Weibrecht foreran the annual Hovey Memorial Race on Jan. 2. A brief ceremony with several speakers including Weibrecht, New York Ski Educational Foundation Director John Norton, and Whiteface Mountain General Manager Aaron Kellett followed at the Finish Arena. The Hovey brought teenage athletes from New York state together to kick off the racing season with a supportive, team-oriented event.

Weibrecht won the race in 2001. Signage highlighting Weibrecht’s career is also on display in the Base Lodge. “I’m incredibly proud of growing up here and for having the privilege to represent Lake Placid and Whiteface throughout my ski career,” Weibrecht said in a statement. “Whiteface, NYSEF and Lake Placid provided an environment where I had the opportunity to grow as an athlete and test the boundaries of possibility. It’s an honor to be part of the ongoing Lake Placid Olympic legacy and I am incredibly grateful for everyone who supported me. Thank you for this recognition, I am honored.” “Andrew Weibrecht sets an outstanding example for athletes of all ability levels,” ORDA CEO Michael Pratt said in a statement. “He combines his impressive skills with humility and an inspiring work ethic. A ‘Wonderful’ time of the year Lake Placid senior directs ‘It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play’ for the holidays

ake Placid High School senior Hannah Wylie wants to be a theater educator and director when she grows up. “I strongly believe in the power of theater and the arts to change the world for the better,” she said. So, as part of her required senior project, she decided to direct a holiday play for the first time. Performances were held on Dec. 17 and 18. “I chose ‘It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play’ for two main reasons,” Wylie said, “firstly because it could be performed online via Zoom or in-person with social distancing, but most importantly because it is a story about hope and the importance of friendship and community, especially during difficult times.” And these are definitely difficult times. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, many people have felt isolated — sheltering in place and staying away from public gatherings — and they’ve felt alone.

It’s the same for the play’s main character, George Bailey, who contemplates suicide by jumping off a bridge on Christmas eve. “I feel that was something we all could identify with,” Wylie said. “The message of

‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ is timeless. It is the collective act of living together as a community that makes life truly wonderful.” Bailey’s community was the fictional town of Bedford Falls. Wylie’s community is the village of Lake Placid. She moved here from Charlotte, North Carolina in June 2020 — in the beginning months of the pandemic. For her senior project, Wylie was inspired by her former high school, which had theater classes. Not so at Lake Placid. While there is a fall high school play, spring high school musical and spring middle school play, she sees room for an expanded theater arts program at Lake Placid High School. She will make the case during her senior project report at the end of the year. “I hope to advocate for an increased presence of the drama program at the high school,” she said. With “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play” being Wylie’s first shot at directing. Learning about the weight of responsibility it took to direct a play, she likened it to being a conductor of an orchestra. “You’re kind of a conductor of it all,” she said. With that responsibility, as a leader, Wylie learned that her attitude and mood — no matter what’s going on outside the auditorium — will affect the attitude and mood of the cast and crew. “I have to be in a good spot mentally,” she said. Wylie directed a cast of 18 students, and many acted in multiple roles. “I hope that this play added a little joy, peace, and Christmas spirit to the Lake Placid community and that the message conveyed in the play inspired the audience to live well in community with one another, for only then will we truly live life to the fullest,” she said.
