LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS
Bookbinder is busy in a rare trade By Kevin Shea
B
ooks up to hundreds of years old have their lifespans doubled in the cozy office in Anastasia Osolin’s home. On the outskirts of the desk lamps above her bench, worn books sit in wait for her on a shelf just out of hand’s reach while she sits. There are Bibles, dictionaries and children’s books that people have mailed to her for rebinding and repairs. To fix each one takes about a week, and she has several months’ backlog. For 23 years she’s been doing this. “I have been binding books since 1996,” Osolin said. She’s also a local artist who makes “assemblages” out of old tools and equipment. She went to art school and worked in a secondhand bookstore in North Carolina. She said books were always something she felt drawn toward, even before she could read. No other work has interested her. At the bookstore, The Avid Reader, the owner wanted to do
bookbinding in-house. Therefore, one of the employees had to learn the trade. The possibility piqued her interest. She joined an apprenticeship in Durham, North Carolina, where she was taught the craft. She impressed her teacher, who asked her to work weekends when she wasn’t working at the bookshop to help him. For five years she remained. Now she works out of her home on Old Military Road, Saranac Lake. Her dog and her son wander the halls, occasionally jumping into the small office where she works on her art as well as the bookbinding. She has a backlog right now, so the wait will be longer than the work. One book in line is a copy of the 1856 Illustrated London News. When she begins, the process will be the same as with any other book: Assess, prep and repair. For this book, the spine is in bad shape. She’ll have to scrape off any glue and remaining binding, find the same leather and then rebind. She doesn’t use animal-based adhesives. She makes her
own, which are water-soluble. The pages at the back of the book are loose, so she’ll have to redo the sewing before she rebinds. The covers are worn but salvageable, she said. Dusting, polishing and cleaning can save them. The process often lasts less than seven days, but it can double the lifetime of a book. If in 200 years someone were to find the copy Osolin repaired, they could repair it as well, preserving the book for another 200 years. Most of her customers are book dealers. She also works with libraries and universities. But there’s another group she works with: the owners of books with sentimental value. Bibles, children’s books and cookbooks are often brought to her to be repaired. These have been kept in the family. The stains, notes and messages are invaluable and can’t be found elsewhere, Osolin said. They are the testaments and archives of loved ones. “People really value the original thing,” Osolin said, “even if you can get another copy.” Osolin is one of only a few bookbinders in the state. She has taught classes to show others the basics of the craft, but it’s possible that the trade might die off. The lifeline of these books might end.
Anastasia Osolin learned how to bind books and repair them, sometimes doubling their possible lifespan, 23 years ago. She continues her craft out of her home in Saranac Lake.

New York’s First-time Homebuyers DARE to DREAM
High taxes and fees create barriers for New Yorkers who work hard to save for a first home. The NY First Home proposal (supported by NY REALTORS®) would establish a new tax-free savings account modeled after the state’s 529 college education savings program.
Edward Legacy Director
PJ Whitbeck Director
Nick Politi Past President
Michael Coughlin Association Executive
If adopted, the NY First Home program would allow New Yorkers to save to help cover costs associated with buying a first home by allowing them to: - Deposit up to $5,000 ($10,000 for couples) of after-tax dollars annually. - Receive a state income tax deduction on the principal - Apply the savings and any interest earned towards the purchase of a first home in New York State. For additional information visit – NYFirstHome.com The bill sits on the Governor’s desk awaiting his action.

Lana Del Rey Sings her way home By Elizabeth Izzo
L
ana Del Rey, a former Lake Placid resident turned internationally renowned recording artist, reminisces about her childhood growing up in the Olympic Village in a recent single. Released Aug. 9, “Looking for America” brings listeners into Del Rey’s longing for a peaceful place in the aftermath of the recent series of shootings throughout the United States. According to Pitchfork, the single was written and recorded in response to the tragedies. Del Rey’s journey takes listeners from San Francisco to New York City, before she decides to take a train up to Lake Placid, where she lived as a child. “I flew back to New York City, missed that Hudson River line,” she sings, “Took a train up to Lake Placid. That’s another place and time, where I used to go to drive-
ins and listen to the blues.” It’s unclear what drive-in Del Rey might’ve been referring to. The Sara-Placid Drive-In in Ray Brook closed in 1974, before she was born. But even in Lake Placid — the place where her memories are tinged with idyllic scenes, a place she sings about with a sort of bittersweet, retrospective reverie — even here, peace can’t be found. “I’m still looking for my own version of America, one without the gun, where the flag can freely fly,” she says with a slow, plodding rhythm. “No bombs in the sky, only fireworks when you and I collide. It’s just a dream I had in mind.” According to Rolling Stone magazine, Del Rey said she knows she’s not a politician, but “all of the mass shootings and the back-toback shootings in the last couple of days” have “really affected me on a cellular level.” The proceeds from the single benefit the Gilroy Garlic Festival Victims Relief Fund, the El Paso Community Relief Fund and the Dayton Foundation, funds to help families of victims of recent mass murders in California, Texas and Ohio, respectively. Locally, Del Rey, 34, is still known by her original name:

Elizabeth “Lizzy” Grant. The daughter of Robert and Patricia Ann Grant, her family moved to Lake Placid when she was 1 year old. The everyday moments of her life in Lake Placid are chronicled in archives of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and the Lake Placid News: photos of a baby-faced girl at a Christmas event in 1987, a small snippet about a time when her photo was featured on the cover of an Abercrombie & Fitch bag in 2000. She spoke to a local reporter about her first EP, “Kill Kill,” more than three years before the song “Video Games” made her a star, while she was still making her transition from Elizabeth Grant to the then-Lana Rey Del Mar moniker. She attended Lake Placid schools until she was 14 years old and her parents sent her to Kent, a private boarding school in Connecticut. When she graduated, she went on to Fordham University in the Bronx and majored in philosophy. She got her first record deal halfway through college, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper in Australia. She told GQ magazine in 2011 that she still visited Lake Placid to see her family but hadn’t spent a lot of time here since she left to attend Kent. But she said it is a beautiful vacation destination. Del Rey’s new album, “Norman (expletive) Rockwell,” came out Aug. 30.

Everyone needs and looks forward to vacations. So if you find yourself visiting the same area frequently, owning a vacation home there makes a lot of sense. If you are considering such an investment, here’s some helpful considerations suggested by Realtor’s Magazine as you begin your quest.
THE M ARK ET Depending upon where you’re looking to buy and the type of home you seek (singlefamily, townhome, condo), what you’ll pay will revolve around inventory, demand and current market conditions locally and nationally. The most recent survey by the National Association of Realtors found than the majority of buyers favored single-family homes and purchased a property for vacations rather than to diversify their investments. So trending prices and long-term return on that investment may be of lesser consequence than simply the enjoyment of owning a vacation home. S AVIN G S AN D C O S TS Chances are with your own vacation home, you’re savoring not only the relative luxury and privacy but the savings potential. No more expensive hotel stays or spending on eating out for all meals. But the costs of owning a second home are also significant: higher

But buyer beware: Some homeowner’s associations ban or restrict renting, the NAR warns. Realtors also recommend consulting insurance agents and lenders on guidelines and tax consequences of renting — rules differ if the home is primarily an investment property or a true vacation home. Finally, the NAR suggests the old adage of try it before you buy it. Renting a potential vacation home for a year should give you a good idea if fantasy meets reality.
