Before placing your home on the market, these simple repairs can turn a big profit and boost the chances of making a quick sale. FIXIN G UP THE K ITC HEN The kitchen is one of the focal points for homebuyers considering a property. This room is commonly used for entertaining and creating wholesome family memories. A kitchen in impeccable condition will increase the value of your home and grab a buyer’s attention. One of the most common problems in modern kitchens are leaks under the sink. The amount of damage this can cause depends on the seriousness of the issue. However, whenever water is noticed, it is imperative to correct the issue as soon as possible. Uncorrected leaks will not only raise the water bill but can wreak havoc on your floor and surrounding cabinets. Trapped moisture in floor coverings also can become a breeding ground for dangerous mold. Consider hiring a professional plumber to find the source and correct the leak. Potential buyers will

likely be turned off by a kitchen that has suffered from water damage or an unresolved leak. REFRES H W ALLS A fresh layer of paint can completely change the image of your home. Before inviting potential buyers in, make sure your walls have been updated. It’s easy, affordable and quick.

It is recommended that you remove any dated wallpaper and paneling to provide a clear slate for a buyer. Once your walls have been cleared, you should repair any damage and apply paint in a neutral color. BATHRO O M UPDATES Pay attention to the integrity of the objects in your bathroom. Is the vanity

in good working order, or are there chips in the ceramic or stains in the sink? The bathtub is another place where stains are common. If replacing these are not in the budget, consider hiring a professional to refinish them. Buyers will pay a lot of attention to a master bathroom, so be sure it is in peak condition.

LAKE PLACID LANDS

WINTER WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

By Griffin Kelly

I

n early March, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) declared Lake Placid the host site for the 2023 Winter Universiade, otherwise known as the Winter World University Games. The 11-day event is expected to attract more than 2,500 college athletes from 52 countries in sports such as hockey, figure skating, snowboarding, skiing and curling. “Lake Placid is the perfect location to host this event, which will showcase the very best of New York and the North Country to an international audience,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a press release announcing the news. Nowhere else could’ve won it, literally. There were no other bidders. The group that made the bid for the games, the Adirondack North Country Global Sports Committee, recently traveled to FISU headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, and submitted its final presentation on why Lake Placid should be the host city. Though Lake Placid was awarded the title of host city, the plan is to have events throughout the North

Country. Hockey would mainly be held at nearby colleges such as SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Plattsburgh and St. Lawrence University in Canton. Alpine skiing and snowboarding would be at the state-run Whiteface and Gore Mountain ski centers in Wilmington and North Creek, respectively. The bid for the games also proposed building a new curling facility in Saranac Lake; however, details on the exact cost and location are not yet worked out. Next steps The local committee and FISU have until June 15 to finalize a formal agreement. At that point, the two groups will start devising an official organizing committee and a master plan for the games. In February, FISU delegates visited Lake Placid and evaluated ORDA venues and other sporting facilities. At a press conference during that visit, the consensus was that everything looked good but could benefit from some upgrades and renovations. FISU Winter Games Director Milan Augustin said the Mount Van Hoevenburg cross-country skiing and biathlon facilities

From left, North Elba town Councilman Jay Rand, state Olympic Regional Development Authority Executive Vice President Jeffery Byrne, Athlete Minder CEO Mara Smith, Crowne Plaza Resort President and Adirondack Park Agency Commissioner Art Lussi, Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism CEO Jim McKenna and North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi pose in January 2017 in front of Lake Placid’s Olympic Center shortly before making an exploratory trip to Almaty, Kazakhstan, to learn more about the World University Games and if Lake Placid could host the international winter sports event.

would need “to be basically built from scratch.” Jim McKenna of Lake Placid, a committee member and CEO of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, pointed out that many of these venues were built for the 1980 Winter Olympics. “It’s not that the venues can’t handle the event,” he said. “They are 40 years old and just have to be refreshed.” Early in the morning on March 31 in Albany, New York’s legislature agreed to pass a 2018-19 state budget that included $62.5 million to update ORDA venues, as Cuomo had proposed. That’s a real leg up for these games. Infrastructure impact A major aspect of the Winter Universiade is not the games themselves but the lasting impact on the region

and its resources. In previous public forums on the games, many committee members acknowledged how hosting the games is a way to improve infrastructure in the Adirondacks. “It will attract new tourists to our region and fuel a critical engine of the North Country’s economy,” state Sen. Betty Little, a Republican from Queensbury and a committee member for this bid, said in the governor’s press release in early March. “I look forward to witnessing its positive effect on our communities for years to come.” McKenna said sports venues, Plattsburgh International Airport and affordable housing are the first things to consider when updating Adirondack infrastructure. “It’s not only for the event,” he said in early March. “It has a long-term effect similar to the ’80 Olympics.”

In the Adirondacks Brooklyn native finds sense of belonging in mountains

By Griffin Kelly

J

ohn Vallini climbed the 2,876 feet to the top of Mount Jo in Lake Placid, taking in the scenery of the Adirondack High Peaks ahead and Heart Lake below. In what was a relativity silent environment, he breathed in the crisp, fall air and shouted at the top of his lungs, “I’m going to live here!” That was more than 28 years ago, and he said it’s been the best 28 years of life. Vallini grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn in the 1950s and ’60s. Over the years, he likes to say he “lived three lifetimes in one.” He was never afraid to reinvent himself and start from scratch. He originally went to school for chemistry, then later found a career in photo production and finally transitioned to volunteer work and nursing. “I always remember what my dad told me: ‘Make sure you pick a job you like because you’re going to have to go to it every day,’” Vallini said. In the late 1980s, Vallini had been working in Manhattan at his own photo production company. There he shot mainly for fashion and cosmetics companies such as Avon. After a while, he grew tired of the responsibilities and pressures of running his own business. He decided to pack up and leave for the North Country, where he had vacationed many times and saw as an escape from city life. He would often take trips upstate to photograph the mountains. He didn’t even have a job lined up, but he knew he wanted to live in the Adirondacks. “I came up here to hide,” he said. “I wanted to get away from it all. I always liked being outside, and Mother Nature takes real good care of you.”

He went from a 3,000-square-foot studio on 20th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue to barely a one-room barn on the edge of Hoel Pond near Saranac Inn, and he loved it. The house didn’t even have a phone, which he enjoyed. One of the main reasons Vallini moved to the Adirondacks was because he wanted a greater sense of community in his life. He wanted to feel like a part of something bigger than himself. “You don’t find those opportunities in Manhattan too often,” Vallini said, “and I found this community very accepting.” Eventually Vallini moved to Saranac Lake and has since been a member of the village’s rescue squad, flew with helicopter rescue service North Country Life Flight and worked as a registered nurse in the open heart unit at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. For about a decade, he worked with the state Olympic Regional Development Authority as the head of medical operations at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid. Now retired, he has begun organizing a music performance series he calls Strings and Things. Some of Vallini’s friends downstate thought it was funny that he left his hectic life of photo production and found less pressure in an emergency room. “For me, it’s all about helping others,” Vallini said. “There were plenty of times where people would come up to me and say, ‘You took care of my son,’ or, ‘You helped my father in the hospital.’ It’s very satisfying doing something for somebody else.”

Paddling Destinations in the Clifton-Fine Region By SPENCER MORRISSEY

Balsam Pond

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: 0.1 mile carry (flat) PERKS: Seclusion, seclusion, seclusion. For a short carry, this will access you to a small hidden pond just off the Grass River. DIRECTIONS: Follow state Route 3 east out of Cranberry Lake. Continue for roughly 4.5 miles to the carry on the right. The pond can be seen from the road, but not easily. Only a small carry sign is located there on a tree.

Chaumont Swamp

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: Roadside access PERKS: The swamp and pond combined will give you some outstanding opportunities for birdwatching and fishing if the idea strikes. DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of state Route 3 and Tooley Pond Road in Cranberry Lake, follow Tooley Pond Road for just under 3 miles to River Road on the left. Follow River Road 4.5

miles to the widening of the Oswegatchie River called Chaumont Pond. Locate the small public access site.

Cranberry Lake

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: Roadside access PERKS: Cranberry Lake is the thirdlargest lake in the Adirondack Park, and its vast shoreline will not allow you to run out of things to do. Miles and miles of hiking trails access the lake from all corners and much of it is wilderness area. With ample state primitive camping along shore and on the islands, you will be able to camp for weeks and not see everything. DIRECTIONS: The best access for Cranberry Lake is at the state boat launch in the hamlet of Cranberry Lake. The launch is located about 0.25 miles up Columbian Road off state Route 3, just west of Cranberry Lake.

Oswegatchie River from Inlet ACTIVITY: River paddling

DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: Roadside access PERKS: Inlet is the prime entry point for the Oswegatchie River and will access you upstream to the Five Ponds Wilderness. This perk should say enough - what an amazing region of the Adirondack Park. DIRECTIONS: Locate Inlet Road (dirt road) about halfway between Cranberry Lake and Star Lake, then drive Inlet Road to its end to the launch site, which is about 3.5 miles.

Star Lake

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: 200-foot carry, downhill PERKS: Star Lake can only be enjoyed from the water and so much is missed when passing through town and not realizing the wealth of beauty this lake offers. DIRECTIONS: In the hamlet of Star Lake locate Youngs Road from state Route 3, next to the Nice and Easy. The public launch is not far down on Pine Street.
