t noon — an hour after USA Luge senior team members finished training on their home track at Mount Van Hoevenberg Sunday, Nov. 15 — seven of their mothers tried out the new Cliffside Coaster attraction. It was a Mother’s Day of sorts for the ”Luge Moms.” It’s a strange year with the coronavirus pandemic, and the families aren’t hanging out with each other at the finish line like they have in the past — clanging cowbells and waving American flags to cheer on their sons and daughters. USA Luge officials decided to hold off on World Cup racing until after the new year. In the meantime, the athletes are training in their own bubble on the combined luge, bobsled and skeleton track at the Olympic Sports Complex. It was Saranac Lake’s Marty Lawthers, mother of 2018 Olympic silver medalist Chris Mazdzer, who suggested a trip to the Cliffside Coaster. Moms drove from all over the Northeast to ride the coaster. There was Pam West, mother of two-time Olympian Tucker West of Connecticut; Carrie Britcher, mother of two-time Olympian Summer Britcher of Pennsylvania; Krista DiGregorio, mother of junior team member Zack DiGregorio of Massachusetts; Jill Cardinale Segger, mother of new senior team member Duncan Segger of Lake Placid; Joanne Gustafson, mother of Jonny Gustafson of Massena; and Sue Sweeney, mother of 2018 Olympian Emily Sweeney of Lake Placid. With such a small group of families for a relatively small team at USA Luge, Lawthers said she enjoys the camaraderie of the parents, especially the moms. “It’s like it becomes your own little cult, and you try not to get too wrapped up with your kids, but eventually you do. You get sucked into it,” she said. Jill Cardinale Segger of
Lake Placid has been a Luge Mom for a while, but this is the first full year with Duncan on the senior team, competing with doubles partner Dana Kellogg. She organized Sunday’s outing. “This was the first time we sat down just as women, just a group of moms,” Jill said. “And being a Luge Mom, there’s a lot of feelings and emotions. So when a group of women get together, it’s a little different than just chatting at a party where there’s tons of people.” Sue Sweeney has been a Luge Mom for 22 seasons, first with daughter Megan from 2007 to 2010 and now with Emily, who lives in Lake Placid. “I’ve become the grandma,” she said. “I’m the ‘Luge Grandma,’ I think.” Luge is not a spectator-friendly sport because parents don’t get to see their children very much — only on TV screens as they proceed down the track and at the finish line. “But the sport itself is exciting and nerve-wracking going so fast on the ice,” Sue said. “And seeing the smile at the end. There’s nothing better than seeing your child do well at something that is very high pressure, whether it’s work or play or sport ... especially when they beat the Germans.” Pam West (mom of Tucker West)

T
he long-vacant horse stables on the Trudeau Sanatorium property are finding new use, as a secondary brewing location for Hex and Hop Brewing in Bloomingdale, filling another building on the historic property with a new business. Ethan Mikesell, owner of Hex and Hop, said the brewery will be leasing one arm of the “U”-shaped building to expand its beer production to include kegs and cans for distribution. “We’re staying in Bloomingdale. We’re not going anywhere,” Mikesell said. “We need to be able to make more volume for bars and restaurants that have been asking for it since day one.” Currently the beers with a honey twist can only be found at the Hex and Hop taproom in Bloomingdale and the farmstand bar on Broadway in Saranac Lake. Left Bank Cafe also serves their IPA. The Bloomingdale location is tapped out as far as room goes. It can’t fit any more brewing equipment. Mikesell said he was not planning to expand, but when Sanatorium developers approached him last winter, he took the opportunity. “They came to us,” Mikesell said. “They said ‘We’ve got this perfect building for a brewery.’ ... It provided a path to do an expansion that we never could have done otherwise.” He said he feels fortunate the
property developers are investing in installing water and electric and that he will be able to lease the property. The building -- officially known as the McGibbon Stable -- had fallen into disrepair after decades of no use. They are refurbishing the building inside and out, from the ground up. The structure’s foundation was weak -- the result of sitting on an uncoursed, uncut rubblestone foundation for many years -- so to save it a new concrete wall, a few feet high, has been installed under the walls, “stabilizing it,” Mikesell said, pun possibly intended. He said there are tentative plans to expand a tasting room and pub in the rest of the two-story, 4,800 square foot building in future years, but that he is not planning on that quite yet. Mikesell said this brewing and distribution location can triple the brewery’s production and allow them to meet the demand for its suds in bars, restaurants and refrigerators. After a scary first spring season this year, in which the taproom had to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mikesell said the separate brewing location will also provide stability to the Hex and Hop business. “This would give us the ability to weather a shutdown again,” he said. “We would have another leg to stand on. ... To me, it looks kind of like a big expansion, but it’s almost like, survival.”
