DJ’s Creativity Leads to Drive-In Pop-Up Movies

time.

ric Wilson of Good Guy Productions in Bloomingdale is helping the North Country get back to some kind of new normal amid the coronavirus pandemic - one movie at a

When the pandemic hit in mid-March, Wilson saw his event business disappear for the foreseeable future. Then in May, the New York State on PAUSE restrictions began to ease, and the North Country economy began to open up in phases. Using social distancing techniques, Wilson began planning different ways to help celebrate life’s special moments. For example, he worked with local colleges and school districts to create unique ways to help graduates mark their milestone. Wilson’s most visible contribution to the local entertainment scene this year, however, has been the pop-up drive-in movie. Working with Tucker Farms in Gabriels and the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department, he first organized a drive-in movie on Thursday, May 21. In an unplanted potato field. Using two screens. About 230 cars showed up to watch “Back to the Future.” Since movie theaters will not be able to open in New York until late June at the earliest, Wilson decided to organize more drive-in pop-up movies. He was back at Tucker Farms June 4 with “The Goonies. Partnering with The Mix and Adirondack 105 radio stations in Lake Placid, they planned three showings in the Tri-Lakes: The screenings will be as follows: “Happy Gilmore” on Friday, June 12 at the North Elba Show Grounds in Lake Placid; “Raiders of

the Lost Ark” on Friday, June 19 at Tucker Farms, Gabriels; and “Men in Black” on Saturday, June 27 at the Municipal Park in Tupper Lake. Wilson is mainly known for providing sound, lighting and DJ services for a variety of events, including weddings, after-prom parties and opening ceremonies for sporting competitions. But he’s found a niche in the pop-up drive-in movie, as long as he can do it. “I’m getting rewarded in more ways than monetary,” Wilson said, adding that he’s received a lot of thank-you messages from people who attended the May 21 event. “It was probably one of the most rewarding jobs or events that I’ve ever been involved with. It was just such a cool event for people. They needed it so badly.” People listen to the movie through the FM radios in their vehicles, and there were strict rules for people attending the events. People were not able to get out of their cars, they were not able to leave, and portable toilets were on hand for emergencies only. Wilson doesn’t know what his summer schedule will look like, as the world remains in the pandemic and social distancing mandates are still in place. But when society finally opens for business again, he’ll be ready to celebrate. After all, that’s his business. “People are definitely still going to celebrate,” he said. “I’m really hoping that when this is over, we have some community events to celebrate getting through this. ... I’m champing at the bit and ready to get out there. I’m a people person. I’m the kind of guy that likes being out and seeing people smile.”

BUYING NEW HOMES

M a kin g a N ew Hom e O ffer I

sbu yin g a n ew co n stru ctio n ho m e m u ch d ifferen t fro m pu rcha sin g a n o ld er,esta blished ho m e? In a w o rd :Y es. A lot goes into purchasing a new-build home that you wouldn’t necessarily think of if you were looking at older homes. It is important to work with a Realtor who has contracted new-build purchases before, which means they will be better equipped to work with your best interests in mind. This doesn’t mean you should solely rely on the experts. Here are a few things you should keep in mind when pursuing a new-build home. What you see isn’t necessarily what you get. The home you tour to get a feel for the builder or a certain layout is a model — and it is designed to entice potential buyers to sign on the dotted line. Be aware that it is most likely full of upgrades that come at an additional cost to the base price. Negotiations tend to

ADOBESTOCK

happen through upgrades — not purchase price. Because they have an entire neighborhood to sell, most builders are reluctant to set a precedent of dropping home prices. You may, however, get a builder to agree to adding in an additional upgrade or to include closing costs into the price of the

home. Get everything in writing. This includes the purchase price but also any upgrades that are to be included in that purchase price, as well as any agreed-upon timeline. While the paperwork is important with the purchase of any home, it is crucial when that home has not been completed.

Written agreements help protect you if construction falls behind schedule or something is built outside of what was agreed upon. Remember, no matter how much you trust your builder, verbal commitments are nonbinding. Understand your warranty. Many new homes come with a home war-

C

ranty from the builder, but all warranties are different. Understand what is (and isn’t) guaranteed by yours. Also be sure to have your home inspected. Even new builds can have problems. It’s important to make sure everything is up to code and in working order before you move in.

FLOWER POWER

Beautifying Lake Placid

Annual flower program a big part of the community

A

By Andy Flynn big flower pot - full of daffodils and gold, white and blue pansies - sat at the entrance to the Main Street parking lot by the post office in early May. It was inches away from a sign of the times: “STAY 6 FT APART; SOCIAL DISTANCING SAVES LIVES.” Lake Placid Beautification Executive Director Cherise Bixler and her crew were doing what their name says: beautifying the community with flowers. When the flowers started showing up in pots around the community, it lifted the spirits of residents when they needed it the most, at a time of uncertainty while New York was on PAUSE during the coronavirus pandemic. Bixler spoke with the News on May 4 and three years ago while working on the springtime flowers. Growing up in Saranac Lake, Bixler now lives in Wilmington with her husband and their 3-year-old boy. She has an extensive background with plants, having graduated with a degree in horticulture from Cornell University in 2000. This is her passion. “Playing with the plants is my favorite part,” Bixler told the News in 2017. “But there really isn’t a part of this job I don’t like. I like the paperwork. I love talking to the people on Main Street when they have questions about the plants or what we do in this community. I love talking to the business owners and finding out what we can do to make it better for them.” Lake Placid Community Beautification takes care of the planting and maintenance of all of the village areas in Lake Placid, about two dozen gardens and more than 150 whiskey barrel flower planters, plus window boxes and hanging baskets. The work is funded by private donors, the village of Lake Placid, town of North Elba, Garden Club of Lake Placid, Uihlein Foundation, civic clubs and local businesses.

Once March comes around, the crew cleans up all the greens in the planters around the village, leftover from the winter. In April and early May, they plant pansies and daffodils. May is filled with garden cleanup, maintenance of the pansies and getting ready for the summer. July, August, September is about making sure the gardens are weeded and maintained, flowers are watered, putting in new plants, and sometimes creating new garden areas. Late September is for planting mums. And for the holiday season, more than 150 trees are placed in whiskey barrels. Making the village a beautiful place is a hard job and one that comes with a lot of costs. As such, Lake Placid Community Beautification can use all the support it can get. “Being a not-for-profit, every year it’s tight,” Bixler said. “People have been so generous every year. It manages to work out, and we appreciate every single dollar that we get.” Anyone who would like to support Lake Placid Beautification can send a check to Lake Placid Beautification, 2693 Main St., Suite 301, Lake Placid, NY 12946.
