Plant-Based Art Olympic Museum director preps botanical art for upcoming show

t was a dusky evening on Monday, May 2, but Alison Haas was bursting with color.
Haas was exploring the land around her home in Wilmington, searching for spring flowers — orange and yellow daffodils, sunshiny Forsythia, purple violets — and imagining the art she could make with them. Haas is an artist who’s always been attracted to color, and her medium provides a rich palette. She makes artwork from pressed flowers, leaves and
other botanicals, and on Monday, she was darting from flower to flower as a new season of pressing was blooming. Haas was naturally drawn to pressing from a young age. She remembers finding four-leaf clovers as a kid growing up and pressing them between pieces of tape to preserve them. But even though she’s made art throughout her life, she didn’t start creating artistic pressings until adulthood. Haas, a Potsdam native, said she loved art classes in high school. Her art teacher encouraged her to go to art school for painting, but she ended
LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS up going to St. Lawrence University, a liberal arts college in Canton, because she thought she couldn’t have a career in art. She focused on art history and design in graduate school at Kingston University in England, all the while taking more fine arts painting classes. Throughout her time in school, Haas said she found multiple sources of visual and artistic inspiration — it just took time for her to realize that painting wasn’t her favorite medium. Haas has a process when it comes to making pressed art pieces. First comes the foraging. Choosing a favorite flower isn’t an easy task. It could change with the season, like a daffodil that blooms only in the early spring. Haas said she has a soft spot for tulips because they press well and retain their color. Once Haas has gathered her flowers, she presses them into a wooden press layered with acidfree paper and cardboard until the botanicals are flat, dry and ready to archive for future use. Haas, who’s the director of the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, has come a long way with her preservation techniques since she was a kid sticking four-leaf clovers between two pieces of tape. Now she’s trained in archiving materials, and the art Alison Haas in her Wilmington Studio studio in the second-story loft of her home is like a mini museum of perfectly-preserved pressings. Unsurprisingly, she organizes her pressings by color. Haas said her work is inspired by a number of things — often what she sees and hears while foraging. She said the sound of a pileated woodpecker could inspire her to look more closely at the bird, or she could be inspired by the sight of a “silly little nuthatch” bird that’s hopping upside down on a tree trunk. Haas grew up admiring colorful illustrations of fairies, gods, goddesses and other mythical creatures from the books her parents read to her. She also grew up in her mother’s garden, which she said was mostly made up of flowers. The love of fantastical worlds and flowers combine in her pressings, where a tulip petal could become a Flamenco dancer’s skirt or a wasp nest could become the branch on which a cardinal perches.

n John Brown Day — Saturday, May 14 — three artists who carry the spirit of the abolitionist buried in Lake Placid were recognized for their work weaving art and social justice together -- local artist Karen “Ren” Davidson Seward, who created the Memorial Field for Black Lives at John Brown Farm, choreographer Tiffany Rea-Fisher, and Rage Against the Machine guitarist and activist Tom Morello. The Spirit of John Brown Freedom Awards ceremony was held at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site. This is the first year that all three recipients of the award from John Brown Lives! are artists. “It’s completely accidental but it’s no accident,” JBL! Executive Director Martha Swan said. “These are three artists of tremendous conviction and talent who use their artistic gifts -powers -- in the service of the community and their struggle for justice.” Swan said the “Spirit of John Brown” means different things to every different person. To her, as a white person, it means taking on the struggle for racial justice as an ally, in collaboration with activists of color, and working to have the right relationship with her country’s thorny history. “John Brown sacrificed all to address the greatest evil of his time,” Swan said. Swan said white Americans are often trained to see Black struggles as a Black problem to solve. “Fundamentally, it is an American problem,” she said. Rea-Fisher and Davidson Seward have collaborated at John Brown Farm several times. On May 9, Brown’s birthday, they held a sunset ceremony at the memorial field with a dance performance choreographed by Rea-Fisher, translating the song “John Brown’s Body” into dance. Morello has spent decades “singing truth to power,” Swan said, primarily through the explosive and revolutionary rock band Rage Against the Machine. The band’s songs are intense bursts of powerful political messages, with radical hooks and brutal delivery. In the song “Settle for Nothing,” vocalist Zack de la Rocha screams, “If we don’t take action

now, we’ll settle for nothing later.” In 2020, as the world’s attention was on police violence against Black people after the killing of George Floyd and months of protests, Davidson Seward created the Memorial Field for Black Lives at John Brown Farm. The field around the statue of John Brown is dotted with around 100 panels bearing the names of Black men and women killed by law enforcement or mobs, showing the violence that has persisted for decades. On May 9, she added 37 new panels, titled “Spiraling Round the Promise of the Right to Vote,” focused on people who lost their lives fighting for the right to vote. She described these panels as a sort of “voting rights history 101.” John Brown came to Lake Placid in 1849 to work with abolitionist Gerrit Smith, who granted plots of land in the area to Black men, allowing them the right to vote. At the time, land ownership was a requirement to participate in democracy. “Voting, certainly, has never been absolute for a lot of people. A few people worked very hard to disenfranchise a lot of people,” Davidson Seward said.
