LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

‘POSITIVITY’ Through workouts fills unique fitness studio

Afitness boutique is carving out a space for itself in sports-oriented Lake Placid with unique class offerings catering to all levels and abilities.

Perched on the second floor of 2663 Main Street and facing the Olympic Oval, Studio Upstate is outfitted with Pilates reformer machines and poles, with aerial silks hanging from the ceiling and mud room that is especially handy in the winter months.

Zoe Brown, owner and instructor at the studio, said that when she moved to the area in 2019, the small community of Lake Placid offered her a unique opportunity.

“I was in such a fortunate and unique situation to have the opportunity to be the only Pilates studio here,” she said. “Because if you’re in other states and other communities, there’s probably neighboring Pilates studios within five or 10 minutes of each other.”

However, Studio Upstate has much more to offer than just Pilates. Brown has a panoply of disciplines in her fitness repertoir — from yoga and Pilates to aerials and fire dancing. However, she said pole dancing was her first love, having practiced it for 14 years.

Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Brown’s journey with pole dancing began when she saw a Groupon for a class nearby. She went with her sister and after one class, she was hooked. She immediately bought a pole and installed it in her basement.

Brown was drawn to teaching because she wanted to create these kinds of spaces for other people. She loved being a student in the pole community, a group of people she has always found to be fun and encouraging.

However, there aren’t a ton of ways to get certified in teaching pole, so she went a more traditional route when it came to teaching, first getting a yoga fitness certification in 2015. She started teaching and was eventually juggling classes at up to six studios at a time, but found herself wanting more.

In 2019, Brown moved to Lake Placid and geared up to open her studio in March 2020. The advent of the pandemic delayed her plans and she was able to open — albeit with restrictions that meant she could only teach a few people in the room at a time — in October of that year.

Now, with a cadre of loyal customers and a growing business, she is happy to say that Studio Upstate weathered a time of isolation and emerged with a new community.

“I’m so glad that we thrived through it,” Brown said. “I don’t even want to say we survived — we totally thrived through it.”

Since opening, Studio Upstate has gained four instructors in addition to Brown, each with their own background and specialties. This is something Brown thinks helps them cater to a broad range of people.

Brown emphasizes their classes are intended for everyone, regardless of level or ability. Her clients range from Olympic athletes — the sliding teams do private lessons with her during the off-season — to people coming off of injuries and women who are doing prenatal or postnatal training.

Chelsi Wright, 41, of Saranac Lake was pulled along by a friend who wanted a buddy to try something new with.

“Going into any sort of new space, especially not knowing what you’re doing or what’s expected of you, is so intimidating,” Wright said. “You walk in there, and it’s like a home. There’s this camaraderie.”

“I adore everything about the pole community. I love the support of all of the people, and I love that it felt like my first time that I had permission to be strong and to be sexy,” Brown said. “To have that in such a supportive environment, just was life changing for me.”

Laura Rafferty, of Lake Placid, took her first pole class at Studio Upstate in January 2021. Four years later, she’s still going strong. She earned her Pilates certification last fall and has also started teaching pole classes.

“It definitely took me out of my comfort zone,” Rafferty said. “I knew I would feel kind of awkward and uncomfortable — and I did — but even before the first class was over, I was comfortable in this space.”

‘MIRACLE ON MCCAULEY’

Major upgrade marks new milestone for ski mountain

It’s a new era for the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. The mountain, which is owned and operated by the town of Webb, began spinning a new triple chairlift on Jan. 17. The new lift replaces a 1973 chairlift.

While new to McCauley, the lift is actually in its second life. Formerly known as the ‘Hudson Triple,’ the lift was originally installed at and operated by Gore Mountain beginning in 2010.

Photo –Kurt Gardner

The former double chairlift at McCauley was still working. Town officials, however, knew that a lift installed in the 1970s was prone to breakdown sooner or later

Kurt Gardner — a former member town of Webb board member — said a mechanical breakdown would leave the town in a precarious position, financially and logistically.

“We’re so thankful and thrilled that this actually happened,” he said. “It saved us.”

The chair is the only ski lift at McCauley to reach the mountain’s summit — the only point to access several of its popular trails. The idea of having the lift out of capacity for so long would have been “devastating” to the mountain and the community, according to Gardner.

“That mountain just means so much to every community member around here and so many people who come ski here,” he said.

Gardner said the old double lift was removed in the spring after the last ski season, and installation of the new lift began in late July. He said that having the lift in service by midJanuary was a remarkably fast timeline.

“You guys have the ‘Miracle on Ice’ up there,” he said. “And now we have the Miracle on McCauley as far as I’m concerned.”

From Gore

Gore Mountain, which is owned and operated by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, removed and replaced the chairlift chairlift as part of an expansion, according to Matt Allen, ORDA’s alpine operations manager.

McCauley had reached out previously about acquiring other lifts.

“Nothing was a good fit,” Allen — who spent 28 years as a ski lift mechanic before joining ORDA’s corporate team — said. “Not worth the effort of reinstalling.”

When it came to the Hudson Triple, however, ORDA and McCauley officials agreed that it was a perfect fit. Allen said it is still considered a fairly new lift by industry standards and should have a long life ahead at McCauley.

Allen said ORDA and state lawyers first made sure the potential transfer would be in accordance with the organization’s property disposition policy.

After getting legal confirmation that it was, Allen said Gore worked to carefully disassemble the lift and bring its components to the mountain’s base, with McCauley responsible for handling transportation and installation costs.

“It’s good to see a small (ski) area, especially a municipal area, function,” he said. “It’s good. It’s really good. New York state has the most ski areas

of any state in the Union, and it’s good to see them keep going.”

A family-oriented mountain McCauley is known for being, “New York’s best family mountain,” according to Farmer.

“This works right in with the triple chair,” he said. “It’s just much better at servicing families.”

Farmer said that nickname lends well to McCauley because of the large variety of terrain. Easy, intermediate, difficult and expert trails all accessible directly from the summit — with all runs meeting back up again at or near the same base location.

“The entire family — no matter if you’re a teenager and you think that part of skiing and snowboarding is slam dancing with mother nature, or if you’re a grandparent or parent, or young kid — they all go up there, they’re one trail away from each other ... we’ve got everything from ‘oh boy’ to ‘oh wow’ to ‘uh oh.’”

The mountain will soon undergo several other major improvements. A number of these upgrades are being made to the mountain’s snowmaking infrastructure. One of McCauley’s bunny hill rope tows is being replaced with a magic carpet -- funded by Herkimer County, in which the ski area is — at the end of this season as well.

With high-capacity snowmaking, high-quality skiing will be able to continue long into the future, according to Gardner.
