Spreading Kindness in Saranac Lake schools
T
By Aaron Cerbone
“Paws,” Petrova Elementary School’s polar bear mascot, high-fives Allie Ott on Jan. 28 at the culmination of the school’s participation in the Great Kindness Challenge. Ott was ecstatic about meeting Paws, grinning from ear-to-ear and hardly able to contain her excitement. Staff photo — Aaron Cerbone
eachers were dancing, police officers were cheering and a polar bear was handing out high-fives in front of Petrova Elementary School on Friday morning, Jan. 28. Counseling staff at the school had welcomed the community to greet students getting off their buses, returning the kindness the children had been showing all that week as part of the Great Kindness Challenge. Members of the Winter Carnival Court, New York State Police troopers and village police officers, members of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, business owners and politicians were there to greet the students. Bloomingdale Elementary School students
also participated in the challenge and on Jan. 28, families and Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department members greeted students with posters and cheers as they arrived to school. The event week was organized by counselors Katelyn Rose, Katie Gaylord and Tara Cassidy with administrative support from Principal Bryan Munn and Dean of Students Katie Laba. The Great Kindness Challenge is a weeklong international event where schools and other organizations take time to teach and practice kindness. Gaylord worked with a co-founder of the challenge when she lived in Virginia. When she moved to Saranac Lake to work at the school, she brought the idea with her. SLCSD Superintendent Diane Fox was glad to participate. “Who could say ‘no’ to this?” she asked, laughing and holding a sign as students hugged “Paws,” the school’s polar bear mascot. Members of the Carnival Court kindly chided some students for not layering up for the cold weather — several were walking in without winter jackets and one boy had shorts on in the 17-degree weather. Each day during the week, students were assigned to be kind to different people — family, neighbors, people at school and themselves. They had a checklist of 48 kind acts to choose from. Some were easily done — sincerely compliment five people, call your grandparents or learn to say “thank you” in a new language. Some would take more effort — go a full day without complaining, raise funds and donate to your favorite cause or make a wish for a child in another country. On one day, they wrote letters to the school’s custodians. Gaylord said the staff was touched by children writing them letters thanking them for their work. She said they’d never seen letters like that before. Rose said they plan to continue this kindness week every year.

Morelli hired as the new historical society director

T
LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS
By Lauren Yates
he Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society’s new director and collections manager, Sophie Morelli, has history with Lake Placid. Morelli is only 24, but her list of achievements in Lake Placid runs deep: an adjunct English professor at Paul Smith’s College, a boat steward for the Adirondack Watershed Institute, a published poet, a playwright, a former varsity tennis and volleyball player, a former Lake Placid Middle-High School Student Council vice president and LPHS Winter Carnival queen. Her interests seem boundless. Morelli says her new position with the historical society is “a little bit out of my wheelhouse,” but as someone who has a master’s degree in education from SUNY Potsdam, her own history shows that she’s equally adept at learning new things as she is teaching. While Morelli said that her relationship with history in general hasn’t been at the forefront of her academic career, the history of Lake Placid has always interested her. “Definitely, growing up here led me to just always have an inherent interest in the history of Lake Placid,” she said. Morelli the third generation of women in her family who have made their home in Lake Placid and graduated from LPHS. She’s been learning about the history of the area her entire life, shuffling through her own family archives that have photos of her grandmother who sat on the LPHS Winter Carnival court two generations before her. Those Nordic sweaters, like a uniform for the carnival court, were
worn by both women. “It’s really cool seeing how strong tradition runs in this town,” she said. Since starting the full-time job with the historical society on Jan. 3, Morelli’s learned a lot more about Lake Placid. While the museum is closed for the winter, she’s working with former Director and Collections Manager Courtney Bastian on some administrative work, like getting the society’s newsletter together, sending out thank you letters, sending emails and updates, and coordinating the society’s winter lecture series. Morelli said she’s also learning how to detail and store artifacts. She said a lot of people who live or have lived in Lake Placid send their old photos and other items to the society for archiving. Once the society’s museum on Station Street opens this summer, Morelli said her job will be like a “whole different position.” She’ll shift her office at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts Annex to the museum, where she’ll be working on a new exhibit about the Northville-Placid Trail centennial that will feature some photos and a history of the trail. Her enthusiasm for the work was visible in her smile. Morelli’s new position has brought her own history full circle in a way. As she sat in her office at the LPCA and music flowed in from a class outside her door, she said she’s spent her whole life doing theater in that building. She keeps in touch with those roots, too, often volunteering with the LPHS theater program.

Understanding PMI First-time homebuyers might be surprised to learn that your monthly mortgage payment is more than the amount due on your home loan. That’s what’s called the principal; the payment also includes interest, taxes and something else: private mortgage insurance, or PMI. Understanding how PMI works is an important part of any homebuying experience.
ADOBESTOCK®
WHAT IS IT? PMI is an additional fee that lenders attach to conventional loans as a safeguard. Established in 1998 by the Homeowner’s Protect Act, private mortgage insurance is designed to encourage banks to lend to those with smaller down payments or fewer resources for mortgage payments, since it protects them from borrower default. Lenders have less risk, and buyers in turn have more choice in buying a new home. DO YOU NEED PMI? PMI is provided by individual outside companies, and arranged for by your chosen lender. It’s typically required when you make a down payment of less than 20 percent of the total
home purchase price. PMI is also usually needed if you refinance with a conventional loan, but have less than 20 percent of the value of your home in equity. HOW DO I PAY? Your PMI premium is most commonly paid as part of your regular monthly mortgage obligation. Details about it can be found under the closing disclosure heading in the projected payments section of your loan documents. Loan estimates distributed before you sign the mortgage will detail the amount. Some lenders offer different payment options, however, so ask if there are other choices available. For example, PMI can sometimes be paid as an up-front one-time premium at your closing. Just be aware that
you may not receive a refund on this premium in certain instances if you refinance or move. CAN I AVOID PMI? Anyone who applies a down payment of more than 20 percent and agrees to carry a loan balance for the rest can choose to waive PMI coverage. Those with PMI can sometimes set a date of termination with their lender, after which the policy will be canceled — as long as mortgage payments have been consistently made. Recently, it’s become more difficult to receive a PMI termination without some sort of refinancing, so review your agreement before signing. You may also no longer need PMI coverage if the value of your home has significantly increased.
