Lamb Watch

North Country School Students Monitor Pregnant Ewes Overnight

N

By Andy Flynn

orth Country School interns Hania and Melody dropped off a dinner to ninth-grader Arden around 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. She wasn’t in the cafeteria because she’s a day student, and she was on Lamb Watch that night. “The interns were like, ‘Hey, one of the ewes is showing signs of lambing. You might want to get up here,’” she said. Arden rushed through the rest of her meal and headed to the barn. It was full of people, including the interns, Barn Manager Erica Burns and fellow ninthgrader Cocona. As she opened the door, she was shushed, like a librarian would do. “I walked in quietly and shut the door quietly,

and everybody was standing by the fence besides Erica and Hania, who were helping the mother,” she said. “Melody was taking notes, documenting everything that was happening.” A black ram had already been born, but Arden made it in time to see her first lamb birth — a white ewe. Twins. In her mind, she gave them the same names as her twin siblings, Zaide and Johanna. “They’re SO cute,” Arden said Feb. 22. This was the beginning of lambing season at North Country School. In all, 10 ewes were impregnated by the school’s ram, Phantom, last September. And the school is bringing back a tradition after a two-year absence, Lamb Watch. During Lamb Watch, ninth-graders take turns

LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

sleeping in the barn overnight — only three at a time during the coronavirus pandemic. They’re in sleeping bags on the hay-strewn floor and set their alarm several times a night to check on the ewes to see if they’re showing signs of giving birth. “Every ewe is different,” Burns said. “Oftentimes, she’ll get quite restless. She’ll spend some time building a nest, which involves her kind of pawing at the hay and digging around in the hay.” If a ewe looks like it will begin lambing, the students call Burns on the radio to monitor the situation and help with any births. Students learn about biology with Lamb Watch, but lessons about the food supply are also reinforced. The school has extensive gardens and other livestock,

such as chickens and turkeys, which are harvested and served to students, faculty and staff at the school throughout the year. The lambs are no different. Most, if not all, will be processed and put on the menu in dishes such as Greek-style gyros. “Typically, I send them (to be processed) in November,” Burns said. “And that’s because we don’t really have the space to winter them. If they’re born in April or May, I would still need to send them in November.” North Country School is a co-ed boarding school for students in grades 4 through 9, with enrollment from around the world. The 220-acre campus is located on state Route 73 outside of Lake Placid near Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Ruthie’s Run owners retiring, plan on staying in the Adirondacks

C

By Elizabeth Izzo

athy and Wayne Johnston have been in business for a long time, and they’re retiring. That means closing their Main Street shop, Ruthie’s Run, and selling the

building. After leaving the corporate world more than 30 years ago, the Johnstons moved to this area to take on the challenge of running a small, mom-and-pop retail store. Ruthie’s Run at 2415 Main St. wasn’t just any store, however. It carries a legacy few other businesses share. Ruthie’s Run, then called Thaire’s Ski Shop, is believed to be the first ski shop in North America. It was established in 1926 by Thaire Bryant and William Hovey, who grew the business from a small section of a hardware store into a full-fledged storefront. Ruth Prime bought the store in the late 1960s and carried on that legacy under a new name, Ruthie’s Run, named after her favorite ski trail in Aspen. When the Johnstons purchased the store from Prime in 1984, they took on that legacy, too. With help from Peppy Fobare, a Saranac Laker who worked at Ruthie’s Run under Prime, the transition was successful. Now, after 95 years of serving the community and its visitors — 37 of those years under the Johnstons — Ruthie’s Run is expected to close. The Johnstons are retiring once their building is sold, and though they’ve been toying with the idea of keeping the store’s website up and running, their retirement will mark the end of this store’s rich history. It isn’t clear yet when exactly the store will be

closing, but the Johnstons began selling most of their stock in the winter. The decision to close the store wasn’t easy, according to Cathy and Wayne. They hoped that a buyer interested in the business would emerge, or that an entrepreneur would approach them with an offer. But ultimately, no one has stepped forward to take over the business. “The only people to contact us was a liquidator,” Cathy said. Though one might think that the closure of Ruthie’s Run was another casualty of the coronavirus pandemic, their customers kept the business flourishing last year, even when the store was forced to temporarily close. Wayne said Ruthie’s Run did well in 2020, though doing well required them to work a lot of seven-day work weeks. The Johnstons have been wanting to retire for a few years, and the economic pressures brought by the pandemic just reinforced their decision to retire. “This will leave a hole,” Wayne said. “In us, as well. Life goes on, and we’re only allotted so much time. It’s a matter of making some choices about how you’re going to spend that time.” The Johnstons plan to stay in Lake Placid. Cathy said they’re not the moving-toFlorida type. The Johnstons are both native New Yorkers. Cathy is from Plattsburgh, and Wayne is from Long Island. They originally moved here after living in North Carolina and working in the textile and chemical dye industries. “We’ll get to enjoy Lake Placid instead of working,” Cathy said.

BUYERS’ TIPS

Maybe you’ve had your eye on a cabin in the woods, a remote cottage in the mountains, or a cozy condo on the beach. You’re not alone. Especially during the current pandemic facing our country, having a spot to get away from crowded areas has a lot of appeal to Americans. This means you should be prepared for competition in the marketplace. In June, U.S. housing inventory fell by 27 percent from the same period a year before, according to Realtor.com. There are still likely plenty of options available to you, so have an idea of what you’re looking for before dipping your toes into the market.

Consider your space and location requirements, as well as your ideal budget. Work with a Realtor local to the area you are considering, especially if it’s a long distance from your current home. These professionals will have a great idea of the local real estate scene, and will able to walk you through all the available options in your specific area.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MORTGAGE RATES With changes in the economy have come big reductions in mortgage interest rates. This summer, the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dipped to 2.98%. This is the first time the rate has fallen below 3% in the nearly 50 years that Freddie Mac has been keeping records. Check with your local mortgage broker on what a potential home loan may look like for you. Now may be the perfect time to make an investment into that perfect vacation home you’ve had your eye on.

WAIT FOR THE RIGHT PRICE More good news for potential buyers is that home prices are stable. In June, the median listing price was 5.1% higher than a year before, according to Realtor.com. This means you may be able to find a great deal in your target geography. Work with a local Realtor to get a better idea of home pricing in the area so you can stretch your dollar as far as possible. CONSIDER THE DETAILS When considering an investment in a vacation home, ask yourself a few pointed questions: • What type of home best fits your needs (a standalone house, a condominium or maybe a duplex)? • Can you fit additional maintenance costs into your budget, such as lawn mowing, snow removal or landscaping? • Will you rent out the home when you’re not living there? The more you know about what you’re looking for, the smoother your search and buying experience will be.
