LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

Remembering

SID WARD Chairman of the (cutting board) By Andy Flynn

I

t was time for the chairman of the board - the cutting board, that is - to finally retire.

“Like many things in his life, he went out of this world on his own terms,” Sidney “Jay” Ward III said about his father, 78-year-old Sidney “Sid” Ward Jr., who died at home on Monday, Aug. 24. After 27 years as a co-owner of Ward Lumber Company, Sid retired in 1997 along with his wife Janet, handing over the reins to their two sons, Jay and Jeffrey, who run the business today. But retirement didn’t fit Sid. He soon became restless. So Sid helped create the Riverside Thrift Shop at the Whiteface Community United Methodist Church in Wilmington and worked there for 10 years. During that period, Sid began making cutting boards at his home workshop from recycled wood. That led him to another calling, one that would make him a legend of charity and good will in Essex County. For the past 19 years, he made and sold thousands of cutting boards and donated 100% of the proceeds to community groups such as churches, libraries and fire departments. He sold his 10,000th board last year. “He tried to finish 10 boards a day, every day of the week, seven days of the week,” Jay said. “And there’s lots of stages in making a cutting board, so all of them were moving through stages.” Then he’d sell them. The day before he died, Sid sold cutting boards at the Keene Farmers Market. A

lot of cutting boards, between $2,000 and $3,000 worth. “He worked hard at the sale on Sunday for the Upper Jay Fire Department,” Jay said. “I talked to him that evening. He was really thrilled because he had a great sale. He got up the next morning, and he was taking a nap on the couch and passed in his sleep.” Sid’s first sales - 20 cutting boards - were made at the Keene Valley Congregational Church in 2001. By 2015, he was selling more than 1,100 a year. He made boards of all shapes and sizes - traditional rectangles, circles and animal shapes such as moose, mice, fish, cats, pigs and lobsters - from a variety of woods, such as Adirondack ash, cherry, maple, red birch, oak and bird’s-eye maple, plus roasted walnut and Brazilian cherry. Perhaps Sid’s longevity had to do with keeping busy after retirement. Maybe it’s because he spent winters in Florida after working full time on cutting boards in the summer in the Adirondacks. Maybe it’s because he loved life and loved giving back to his community, which grew bigger with each cutting board sale. Or maybe because of all the vices he could have chosen, he only had one. “I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t gamble,” Sid said in 2018. “I don’t have a drug problem. I don’t have a four-wheeler or a boat. I spend all my time in my shop. I don’t have time for any of those things. My only bad habit is buying lumber.”

Catherine Moore departs after 47 years in the business

W By Andy Flynn

hen Catherine Hovland came to this village from Florida to study at North Country Community College in 1972, she wanted to be an art teacher. But life didn’t work out

that way. A year later, she began working part time for the Adirondack Daily Enterprise in the circulation department for Jim Bishop and earned a two-year degree at NCCC. “I needed more money to go to Plattsburgh State, and so I started working,” she said. Instead of transferring to Plattsburgh State, she stayed at the newspaper and made a career of it. She married Jack Moore on Sept. 8, 1974 at St. Bernard’s Church and bought a home in Saranac Lake later that month. Now, after 47 years in the newspaper business - and 31 years being the publisher of the Enterprise and Lake Placid News - Catherine Moore has retired at the age of 67 from her “accidental career.” Her last day was Aug. 14.

Moore grew up in Stony Brook, Long Island, moving with her family to Florida when she was 16 years old. “Meanwhile, Jack and I wrote letters back and forth,” she said in her office before retiring. “My husband was going to college up here, so that’s how I ended up in Saranac Lake. ... I had just landed here, and this (building) was a bar, and I said, ‘I love this place. I never want to leave.’ It happened to be a year later they made this the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.” Moore moved up the ranks, from assistant circulation manager to advertising representative, ad manager and finally publisher of the Enterprise and News in 1989. She never got that degree from Plattsburgh State because she kept getting promoted. When Publisher Bill Doolittle retired in 1989, he recommended Moore for the job. One thing she learned from him was to always get prepayment for an ad. “I was very trusting,” Moore said. “I remember calling on a farm that used to advertise big pages with us. I

fell in love with these people. I’d hold her baby while she wrote down the copy. And she called me late that night. She goes, ‘Cathy, I’m sorry, I can’t pay you and we’re leaving in the middle of the night. I’m sorry. Nice knowing you.’ And off she went. And I had to tell Bill that. And he said, ‘Don’t trust anybody, not even your brother.’ ... I learned my lesson after that.” Moore said that dealing with the coronavirus pandemic was the biggest challenge of her career. Yet, like everything else, she always looked on the bright side. “I mean it has its good points that people realize how important a newspaper is,” she said. “People want to know what’s happening locally and how things run, what stores are open and what stores aren’t.” Moore now plans on spending more time with her family, traveling and getting back to the art she’s been putting on hold for so many years. Who knows, there may be a long-awaited Catherine Moore art show in Saranac Lake in the near future.

People in the Adirondacks didn’t hear much about Elijah McClain when he died after police forcibly detained him in his Colorado hometown, but one year later, on Aug. 30, numerous people commemorated him at an outdoor concert by violinist Charlie Burnham and bass player Fred Cash. About 150 people attended the Violin Vigil for Black Lives at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid. The concert took place in front of the statue of abolitionist John Brown, around which Karen Davidson of Saranac Lake has designed and arranged markers for Black people allegedly killed by police brutality. The attendees wore masks and spread out on the lawn in groups 6 feet apart, and organizers asked that they sign in so contact tracing could be done later, if necessary. Part of the concert was a “Community String Along” in which at least a dozen local string musicians - mostly violinists but also some on cello, guitar and banjo joined Burnham and Cash on three traditional songs: “Let My People Go,” We Shall Overcome” and “Amazing Grace.” McClain was a violinist who was known to play his instrument for animals at a shelter in his hometown of Aurora, Colorado. Burnham called McClain’s death “heartbreaking.” Photos – Peter Crowley

FINDING A HOME

C o n sid er S cho o l Districts A

s you begin the hunt for a new home, several elements will contribute to the guidelines framing your search.

Number of bedrooms and bathrooms, square footage and neighborhood will all play a role — but so should schools. Even if you don’t have — and don’t plan to have — any children, the quality of a school district will affect the cost of a home, whether you are aware of it or not. HIG HER LIS TIN G PRIC ES This is both a benefit and (possibly) a disadvantage. Well-placed homes in sought-

after school districts are popular — and will therefore always garner a nice price. People with children are willing to pay more to ensure their kids receive a good education. Yes, it will cost you more now, but it will mean more money for you later if and when you sell. Is the probable payoff later worth the higher purchase price now? Keep in mind you will most likely get more house for your money outside

of a sought-after school district if square footage is your primary concern. HIG HER TAX ES Property taxes are a significant factor in overall home cost and maintenance. Homes in highly ranked school districts tend to have higher property taxes. Houses just outside the boundaries will retain features of the neighborhood you desire but may have lower property taxes.

M ARK ET S EC URITY Homes in a coveted school district have a way of weathering real estate market dips — which can be a welcomed piece of security in our recovering economy. A quality education will always hold value, and so will any means of getting one. If you are looking for your next home to be a true investment, don’t ignore school rankings when you make your choice.
