SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM

The Town of Franklin hosted a Summer Youth Program in Vermontville this Summer starting July 6 to Aug. 13th at the Kate Mountain Park. Balsam Pond

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: 0.1 mile carry (flat) PERKS: Seclusion, seclusion, seclusion. For a short carry, this will access you to a small hidden pond just off the Grass River. DIRECTIONS: Follow state Route 3 east out of Cranberry Lake. Continue for roughly 4.5 miles to the carry on the right. The pond can be seen from the road, but not easily. Only a small carry sign is located there on a tree.

Chaumont Swamp

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Easy DISTANCE: Roadside access PERKS: The swamp and pond combined will give you some outstanding opportunities for birdwatching and fishing if the idea strikes. DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of state Route 3 and Tooley Pond Road in Cranberry Lake, follow Tooley Pond Road for just under 3 miles to River Road on the left. Follow River Road 4.5

miles to the widening of the Oswegatchie River called Chaumont Pond. Locate the small public access site.

Cranberry Lake

ACTIVITY: Flatwater paddling DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: Roadside access PERKS: Cranberry Lake is the thirdlargest lake in the Adirondack Park, and its vast shoreline will not allow you to run out of things to do. Miles and miles of hiking trails access the lake from all corners and much of it is wilderness area. With ample state primitive camping along shore and on the islands, you will be able to camp for weeks and not see everything. DIRECTIONS: The best access for Cranberry Lake is at the state boat launch in the hamlet of Cranberry Lake. The launch is located about 0.25 miles up Columbian Road off state Route 3, just west of Cranberry Lake.

Oswegatchie River from Inlet ACTIVITY: River paddling

DIFFICULTY: Moderate DISTANCE: Roadside access PERKS: Inlet is the prime entry point for the Oswegatchie River and will access you upstream to the Five Ponds Wilderness. This perk should say enough - what an amazing region of the Adirondack Park. DIRECTIONS: Locate Inlet Road (dirt road) about halfway between Cranberry Lake and Star Lake, then drive Inlet Road to its end to the launch site, which is about 3.5 miles.

ashi “Techung” Sharzur and his wife, Olga “Sisa” Salgado, want to put down roots in Lake Placid, and one local organization hopes to rally the community to make that happen. AuSable Valley Habitat for Humanity, for the first time in the group’s history, is in the process of building a new home for the couple on a property off The Commons Way. On Tuesday, July 27, a small group of volunteers was on site pouring concrete for the basement walls. They began working on the house about two weeks ago, but this project is something AuSable Valley chapter officials have talked about for the past two years, according to HFH Board Member Steve Sama. “Habitat for Humanity does about one house every two years here,” Sama said. “This is the first Habitat for Humanity house in Lake Placid. We kind of think that’s a big deal, especially given the need for housing here.” Sama, who moved to this area from Long Island in 2014, has been working in construction his entire adult life. There’s a high demand for luxury home construction in Lake Placid, and developers can make a lot of money building homes for the wealthy, according to Sama. He believes that’s why more developers haven’t taken on affordable housing projects, despite the overwhelming need in Lake Placid. Sama hopes this volunteer-driven construction of the couple’s home — plus Fawn Valley, an affordable housing development slated for construction on Wesvalley Road, which he is

also involved with — will serve as a model and encourage other developers to take on similar projects. Techung is a Tibetan musician. Sisa is a dancer originally from Ecuador. “It is heartwarming to feel that we will have a place to call home in the near future,” Techung wrote in an email. Techung’s parents, alongside some 100,000 other Tibetans, fled Tibet to escape Chinese oppression. They settled in India. “In my entire life, in India and in the USA — I’ve lived here over 30 years — I never felt settled because I have been missing my home country deeply,” he wrote. “This housing project is giving me a sense of longing and settling. My wife and I have the support of our family and we’re ready to start working on our housing project. We feel totally blessed.” The couple was asked to attend a first-time homebuyers program as part of the approval process, and they required to put in 500 hours of “sweat equity” into their home. In exchange, they’ll have a no-interest mortgage with Habitat for Humanity. The land the home is being built on was donated by Lake Placid real estate agency Engel & Völkers, Sama said. The land itself will be turned over to the Adirondack Community Housing Trust, which will lease the property back to the couple for about $25 per month. If all goes well, the Techung and Sisa will have their own home in Lake Placid by the end of the year.

Meet Zelda, a local therapy dog in training

tuck at home at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Saranac Lake native Traci Marie Wagner had only her dog, Maggie, to keep her company. Wagner loved Maggie, a great dane-mastiff. She’d had the dog for 11 years, and it helped her through some of the hardest times in her life just by being there. With no family or kids to keep her busy during the pandemic, Maggie brought her a lot of comfort. Then she was gone. “(Maggie) passed away during the heat of COVID last July, on my birthday, nonetheless,” Wagner said. “It really made me realize how much she provided for me in my life, because it’s just me. I didn’t have a family to fall back on or kids to keep me busy, drive me crazy. It was just this huge void.” Losing a pet, even without the added impact of a pandemic, can be heartwrenching. Much like losing a family member, people process the grief of losing a pet in different ways. “I ended up just focusing 100% on work and just working all of the time,” she said. Wagner is the general manager of Adirondack Health’s Medical Fitness Center in Lake Placid. The facility was closed for months last year. She worked remotely from March until the end of June, before the facility gradually reopened starting later that summer. Wagner, even while dealing with her grief, worked a lot to help get the facility back up and running. “I look back on it now and think ... that was probably not the healthiest thing to do,” she said.

“It was my way of coping.” After Maggie died, Wagner thought she wouldn’t get another pet for at least another 10 years. Then came a text message from Wagner’s hairdresser. She suggested getting a dog that was up for adoption, and that conversation led to Wagner doing some research about the breed, which led to her finding a breeder in Vermont. Then she met Zelda. Zelda, a Bracco Italiano — also known as an Italian pointer — is a 15week-old puppy bred in Vermont. Like most dogs her age, Zelda is playful and energetic with a friendly disposition. After Maggie died, Wagner found herself wanting that companionship with a dog again. She did some research on therapy dogs and thought by getting Zelda, the dog could not only help her but others. “The first thing I noticed with having her ... I was like, ‘Wow, I haven’t laughed like that in a really long time,’” Wagner said. Wagner thinks it’ll take about a year to get Zelda trained and licensed as a therapy dog. Asked if there’s been a moment while training Zelda that Wagner felt they were making some progress, Wagner pointed to the dog’s ability to not eat a treat until she’s told to. “She’s so goofy when she does it. It’ll be right in front of her nose and she kind of bats her hands at it, but she won’t touch it. She won’t take it until I tell her it’s OK and I give it to her,” she said.
