Yes, art!

12th ANNUAL

t’s hard to think that art is a threat to the health and well-being of people during the coronavirus pandemic. Art? Really? No, not really. Art itself doesn’t spread the virus; it’s when crowds of people come together for large events that is the problem. Art brings people together, and we are used to celebrating it during the Third Thursday Art Walks in Saranac Lake, art gallery openings, workshops, dance classes, productions at Pendragon Theatre and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, concerts at a wide variety of venues and regional studio tours. Most of that coming together has stopped during the pandemic, and that means this summer will be a strange time for most artists and those who appreciate art. Yet we’re interested to see what kind of art comes out of all this. What paintings, photographs, plays, songs, films, poems and stories will we be seeing that explores the pandemic — the human pain, suffering, loneliness, small celebrations of life during a lockdown? Only time will tell. A lot of artists, venues and organizations have pivoted to provide virtual connections on videoconferencing platforms and websites, which becomes easier as the technology allows. But it’s not the same. We need that human connection when it comes to art. And we’re looking forward to a time when we can, once again, get together and share what we’ve created this spring and summer. Until then, just know that we’re missing you, and we hope that you stay safe and healthy during this challenging time. Andy Flynn, editor

BluSeed Studios makes COVID adjustments

SARANAC LAKE — As we work our way from “coronavirus lockdown spring” into “cautiously reopen summer” and see so much of our summer events canceled or postponed, we sometimes think that this is going to be the summer that wasn’t. Not quite, at least not at BluSeed Studios, located at 24 Cedar St. BluSeed is continuing to develop programming during this time of shutdown, programming that is specifically geared toward the need for distance and online arts workshops and classes. When things closed down in March, Carol Vossler, BluSeed’s founder and artistic director, was already looking at how to put on the popular BluSeed spring break art program for Saranac Lake area kids. In early April, BluSeed provided more than 800 art kits (along with producing online YouTube videos) for more than 200 elementary, middle and high school students on their spring break. BluSeed Studios quickly adapted to creating and producing programming within the restrictions, limitations and confines of COVID19 and it continues to develop programs. One example is BluZoo, an art and science camp which has, in the past, been located at the BluSeed Studios. BluSeed was awarded a grant from the Charles R. Wood foundation to create videos and art kits/instructions for a virtual “BluZoo” summer art camp. BluSeed is working on another unique video project, “Mapping Personal Change with Words & Pictures.” It was developed for people of all ages who want to advance their creative possibilities. An exhibition featuring paintings, drawings, digital art and photography by artists Shelley and Michael Blase, Xander Giroux and Brittney Sternburg will be on display throughout summer and fall. Concerts at Live on BluStage, a long-standing mainstay of BluSeed Studios will happen again, but that seems a bit down the road. The staff is looking at possible live open-line performances. And BluSeed’s annual summer fundraiser has evolved from the Summer Breeze Gala into the “Summer Breeze Bento-Bag Benefit.” Learn more about the BluSeed programs at bluseedstudios.org, on the BluSeed Facebook page or call the office 518-891-3799.

SUMMER/FALL 2020

Depot Theatre offers academy, no on-stage shows this year

WESTPORT — On May 20, Depot Theatre officials announced that the planned 2020 main stage season was canceled this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic. “Our intention is to pack up the whole 4-show lineup and produce it in its entirety — hopefully in 2021 — once it is possible to do so at the theatre,” officials wrote on their website. This nonprofit professional theater is located at 6705 Main St. in Westport at the train station — built in 1876 — still used by Amtrak. While there will be no stage productions this year, the Depot Theatre has developed an alternate Depot Theatre Academy 2020 outreach and education program. Originally set to be held inside the Whallonsburg Grange Hall as in past years, it will be held outdoors, under a large, open-sided tent in the one-acre parkland behind Whitcomb’s, the Grange-owned building directly across the street. The dates for the junior program (ages 8-12) are July 13 to 24, and the senior program (ages 13+) dates are July 27 to Aug. 7. “We are partnering with the Whallonsburg Grange Hall to provide a safe, outdoor space for this ‘al fresco’ version of the Academy. The Grange will be sponsoring community events some evenings under The Big Tent as well,” said Kim Rielly, Depot Theatre’s executive director. “I think it’s imperative for arts organizations to alter our perspectives and to find creative and collaborative solutions in order to persevere in the current environment and into an unknown future.” Junior participants will have safely-distanced training in dance, voice and scene work, and the ability to connect with each other to produce a take-home video compilation of their individual and collective performances, which we intend to present in a pubic showing The senior program will include scene and song study using modern-day Broadway hits — such as “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Hadestown” and “Mean Girls” — and will include audition preparation for stage and acting on-camera. Participants will take home a demo reel of their work. Strict physical distancing and health and safety protocols will be observed, in accordance with federal and state recommendations and

guidelines pursuant with the state’s Phase 4 guidance. Scholarships are available. Questions regarding the program should be directed to Adam Michael Tilford at academy@depottheatre.org. Learn more at www.depottheatre.org.

Pendragon cancels summer season

SARANAC LAKE — Pendragon Theatre actors are not expected to perform before a live audience this summer. “YOU, our audience are our priority, says a letter from the community theater’s board President Marc Gitlitz, dated Monday, March 30. “We won’t put your health at risk during the COVID19 pandemic. So we’ve made the sad and difficult decision to cancel our 2020 Summer Season. “But, he added, “as I write, Pendragon staff is working on creative ways to bring theater to our community virtually. If you can’t come to our home, we’re planning innovative ways to bring entertainment and insight to yours. The letter is also an appeal for donations to help Pendragon pay for its “bare bones year-round staff and heating bills. “Leaving Pendragon ‘dark’ this summer will bring financial shock, Gitlitz wrote. “Ticket sales, advertising, and sponsorship represent over half our annual revenue. “If we can raise $225,000 we won’t have to furlough staff, and we can keep the heat on (low!) Pendragon has also been raising money to build a new theater on the corner of Woodruff and Church streets.

Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery open ... with new rules

SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery, in its 23rd year on Main Street, has art up on the walls, in the window, and plans to be open with limited hours. Like all other businesses, masks and social distancing will be required, people in the gallery will be limited to six at a time. The Gallery wants buyers and collectors to know that while the website is fully set up for easy online shopping, they are also willing to have customers schedule private viewings in order to see artwork in person. The best way to schedule one is to email the Gallery at guild@adirondackartistsguild.com. The 2020 season opened with an online show, “The Color of Wind,” featuring the photography of Barry Lobdell. In this exhibit of discovered abstractions, color plays an instrumental role. Jacqueline Altman was the featured artist for June with “Close to Home,” her exhibit of watercolors. A seasonal resident of Lake Placid and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Jacqueline also had an online show as she was still in Pennsylvania in June. July’s featured artist is Jeanne Danforth with “Now and Then,” which will be hung in the Gallery and be online. August will feature paintings by Georgeanne Gaffney. In September, photographer Eleanor Sweeney will hang an exhibit. Master of ceramics Mary Lou Reid is the October exhibit. Plein air painter Nancy Brossard will fill the featured artist with oil paintings in November. Anastasia Osolin will close out 2020 with a display of her eclectic assemblages. No exhibit receptions are planned at this time, but all featured artist exhibits are included on our website for viewing and shopping. The Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery is a co-op retail gallery with 15 members. For more information, visit adirondackartistsguild.com.

Adirondack Plein Air Festival continues outdoors, online

SARANAC LAKE —The 2020 Adirondack Plein Air Festival is still on schedule — no postponements for viewers and purchasers, but the viewing and purchasing part of the event will be joining the virtual revolution. Instead of filling the Town Hall in Saranac Lake with wet paintings the annual Show & Sale will go online. The new 2020 virtual Plein Air exhibit will open on Aug. 22 for donors and on Aug. 23 for the general public. The paintings aren’t all that’s new this year, according to Sandra Hildreth, founder of the festival and one of the co-founders of Saranac Lake ArtWorks. “This will be a chance for patrons to explore our brand new website, SaranacLakeArtWorks.org,” Hildreth said. “We have had our website redesigned and added many new members throughout the North Country. We are also on the way to becoming our own not-forprofit organization which is why we have switched our website name from a .com to a .org.” Artists from all over the country had started registering for the Festival on Feb 1. With the onset and as yet unknown full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic some changes had to be made. It will no longer be a requirement for the participating artists to physically stay in Saranac Lake for a single week of painting the Adirondacks. Their work is still required to be new with the Adirondacks as the subject matter but artists are invited to paint wherever they like within the Blue Line of the Adirondack Park between the dates of July 30 and Aug. 19 this year. All paintings are to be completed, outdoors, on location, during the dates specified—the honor system will apply. Artists will email their digital images and the 2020 Adirondack Plein Air Show will be on the Saranac Lake ArtWorks website for a month beginning with the online preview party on Aug. 22. There will be a Special Preview Exhibit for those who make a $20 donation to Saranac Lake ArtWorks. The password for the private online viewing will be emailed to those who wish to see and have the first chance at purchasing works produced for the festival. ArtWorks is looking into the possibility of staging an outdoor

Plein air setup in Saranac Lake Saranac Lake ArtWorks

Show & Sale for local plein air painters the weekend of Aug 22-23 but that will be determined later in the season. In the meantime, the Saranac Lake ArtWorks website — SaranacLakeArtWorks.org — will post any new developments and live opportunities for artists and audiences. SUMMER/FALL 2020

Lake Placid Sinfonietta looks forward to 2021

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Sinfonietta Board of Directors Monday, April 27, decided to postpone the 2020 performance season, “See the Music,” to the summer of 2021. “Given the likelihood that public health recommendations on social distancing will extend through the summer, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our planned 2020 summer season until 2021,” Sinfonietta Board of Directors President Robin Baxter said in a press release. “We cannot in good conscience plan for audiences to assemble, and for health and safety reasons cannot ask our performing musicians to work shoulder to shoulder on stage as they must in order to create their art. We have also considered that it may not be responsible to encourage the 20 plus musician households of the orchestra to move to the region for the summer.” This cancellation will mark only the second time since 1917 that the ensemble which is now the Lake Placid Sinfonietta has not performed. The other “quiet” summer was 1945 when the private Lake Placid Club was in use as a rest hospital for World War II. Newly appointed Music Director Stuart Malina expressed his sadness at canceling the 2020 season. “After the months of planning what would have been my first season leading this marvelous group of musicians, it is heartbreaking to cancel,” Malina said in a release. “I am sad for the players, for myself and for our loyal supporters. Having said that, the greater good and the health and well-being of our community must be the driving force in our decision making. We will be back making beautiful music and entertaining the music lovers of the Adirondacks next year.” In 2017, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta celebrated its centennial. In 1917, the Lake Placid Club began inviting 11 musicians from the Boston Symphony Orchestra to play seven concerts a week. The Sinfonietta as it is known today dates to 1939 after the musicians were pulled from Lake Placid as the Boston orchestra’s Tanglewood venue opened. The Lake Placid Club commissioned Paul White to organize 10 musicians from the Rochester Philharmonic and pick up the responsibility of bringing orchestra music to the Adirondacks. The

bandshell in Mid’s Park in downtown Lake Placid, one of the Sinfonietta’s primary venues, is named for White. During the summer, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta offers Symphony Series concerts on Sunday evenings at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, Park Series concerts on Wednesday evenings at Mid’s Park, Pro Musica Chamber Series performances under the artistic direction of pianist Navah Perlman, a Children’s Concert at St. Agnes School in Lake Placid and Adirondack Series concerts at venues throughout the region. The Lake Placid Sinfonietta’s 2021 season will run from July 7 through Aug. 15. Updates on the exact schedule and programming will be posted as soon as possible on the Sinfonietta’s website at www.lakeplacidsinfonietta.org.

Saranac Lake ArtWorks

SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake ArtWorks is alive and well, with a record 83 members in 2020, from all corners of the Adirondacks and beyond. COVID-19 has had a major impact on the arts in Saranac Lake. Due to restrictions, the Third Thursday ArtWalks have been postponed until further notice. The Studio Tours are also postponed at this time. The Adirondack Plein Air Festival, Aug 22-23, is being held, but will have no reception and no formal exhibit — the Show & Sale will be online.

Our member artists and organizations are not sitting around doing nothing. They have been creating new art, producing online exhibits, and developing other online content to connect with their supporters and audiences. They all have websites that provide information and things like online exhibits and performances, classes and workshops, and other creative opportunities. ArtWorks has a brand new website that provides each member with their own page of information and images. Visit SaranacLakeArtWorks.org and explore what

So please consider shopping locally and helping support the artists who live in your neighborhoods. We will be back with exhibits and ArtWalks and Studio Tours as soon as it is safe to do so.

Heidi Gutersloh

Art discovered Heidi Gutersloh when she was invited by her third-grade art teacher to be part of an exclusive afterschool painting class. What she discovered was a lifetime passion to be able to look at a scene, an old rusted antique or a playful animal or person, or as she says, ”whatever moves me,” and get it onto canvas. A self-taught artist, attending adult education classes for over 18 years afforded her the opportunities to watch, listen and put to use the teachings of trained artists. Growing up on the south shore of Long Island, the beaches were often the subject of many of Heidi’s earlier oils. After painting several portraits of friends’ pets and giving them as gifts, through word of mouth she found professional success in capturing the spirit of peoples’ beloved pets, family homes and prized boats. Living in the Adirondacks, Heidi is finally living a dream as a founding member and secretary of NorthWind Fine Arts, a collective gallery opened in the spring of 2011. PAGE 12

Anastasia Osolin

As an artist, Anastasia Osolin is primarily motivated by an enduring fascination with all things old and peculiar. She makes collages and assemblages from a wide variety of found objects and imagery gathered from flea markets, yard sales, books, antique shops, construction sites, and her daily walks in and around Saranac Lake, drawing inspiration from the history of science and astronomy, mysticism, art history, Victorian ephemera, and industrial decay (i.e. just about anything old and rusty). Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Anastasia has a bachelor’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. When not fiddling around with bits of rusty junk, she is also a professional book conservator, amateur writer, and certified yoga instructor. More of Anastasia’s work may be seen on her website, www.anastasiaosolin.com, and on the walls of the Adirondack Artists Guild, of which she has been a member since 2016. For more information, contact her at 518-891-2120 or aosolin1@gmail.com or visit www.anastasiaosolin.com.
