Take an artistic journey through the Adirondacks

We’re surrounded by arts in the Adirondack Park. Other than the obvious art displayed by Mother Nature every day — the beautiful mountains and valleys, nooks and crannies, lakes, rivers and babbling brooks — manmade art comes from all corners of our small mountain communities.

Yet it’s Mother Nature who is our main muse, and she uses all the senses to get our creative juices flowing.

Artists take her soundtrack of bird songs, canvas of forested landscapes, fragrance of balsam, taste of maple and feeling of cool river water to create art.

We see it in the landscape photography of Brant Lake’s Carl Heilman, the plein air paintings made in Saranac Lake every August and the pressed-flower designs from Wilmington’s Alison Haas. We feel it in lakeside parks during a summer concert or through a dance performance at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. We hear it in songs such as Roy Hurd’s “Adirondack Blue,” Dan Berggren’s “Mountain Air” and Peggy Lynn’s “April.”

Much of that art comes from a moment — or moments — inspired by Mother Nature, our everyday lives, our friends and families, or other artists.

All it takes is that moment of mindfulness to spark a creation. We may spend a few minutes, several months or even a decade to finish a piece of work. But once it’s done, that art begins its own work — to inspire others, to communicate a feeling or idea, to teach or to let our imaginations run wild.

Art, however, isn’t just music and painting, photography and dance, or theater and film. Art in the Adirondacks comes in many forms: Architecture, Ceramics, Sculpture, Jewelry, Crafts, Furniture, Mural Painting, Boat Building, Fly Tying, Fiber Arts, Culinary Arts, Literary Arts, Cartoons, Calligraphy, Wood Carving, Woodworking, Fashion, Map Making, Graphic Design, Comedy, Magic, Mime, etc.

Art is all around us because art is inside every one of us. We just need to let it out. Inspiration comes in all forms and at all times of the day. Find a medium, express yourself, share it with others and see what happens.

We encourage you to take an artistic journey through the Adirondacks this year by exploring your own creations or those of your friends and neighbors. And let your journey begin here — with Arts in the Park.

ALCA announces its 2024 season

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts recently announced its lineup of programming for the 2024 season, “Back in Blue, Act IV: The Magic BUILDS!” featuring a continuing return to the live music and theatre, along with new art-gallery exhibits, workshops and kids’ activities.

The arts center 2024 lineup includes classical, folk, jazz, rhythm and blues, country, roots and Broadway music through its Weekend Series, including world-renowned pianist Tony Siqi Yun performing on the arts center Steinway on July 20 and a return by arts center favorites Martin and Kelly on Aug. 23. The popular “Tuesdays@theAC” series also returns this season, featuring locally-based or connected performers.

The magic builds with three touring ADK LAKES Theatre Festival productions: Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” in July, Gilbert and Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore” in August, and the premiere of Frederic Glover’s “The Cure: An Adirondack Story” in September.

“Fifty-seven years ago, in 1967, a little group called the Beatles came out with ‘The Magical Mystery Tour,’ a musical tour de force that helped define a generation,” said Arts Center Artistic General Director George Cordes. “That same year, Jim and Sheila Hutt founded the arts center in Blue Mountain Lake, a magical place that has continued

to help define what the arts mean to our Adirondack communities. We now present Act IV of our return to live programming (four years since COVID), and we continue to build back stronger every year.”

This year, the arts center opens its doors to the public on Friday, May 24, with its season running through Sunday, Oct. 6. New hours during the summer will be Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. (spring and fall hours will vary). The Gift Shop will also reopen to the public. For everything going on at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, check out adirondackarts.org.

Weekend Series

The 2024 Weekend Series kicks off on Saturday, June 29, with the classical vi-

olin/piano duo Bowlin-Cho, followed on July 20 by pianist Tony Siqi Yun. The highly sought-after soloist made his subscription debut last year with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Yannick Nzet-Sguin and regularly performs recitals throughout Europe and North America.

On Friday, Aug. 2, the Buffalo-based group FolkFaces bring their “rowdy jazz and bluesy roots” and on Saturday, Aug. 10, Chicago-based cellist Anita Graef will be joined by her brother Julian on violin and viola for a classical string program. The country duo Martin and Kelly returns to rock the arts center — this time with their full band — on Friday, Aug. 23, followed by a return to the arts center of the Canadian group Durham County Poets on Friday, Aug. 30. Rounding out the series, the Seagle Music Festival will again bring their talented young singers on Friday, Sept. 13, this year featuring musical-theatre songs from beloved Disney shows.

All Weekend Series concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. this year, and tickets will be available through the arts center website in advance and at the door.

Pinafore,” semi-staged and presented Aug. 17-21, with venues to include the arts center, Blue Mountain Lake; View Arts, Old Forge; Tupper Lake Middle/High School; and Indian Lake Theater, Indian Lake.

Finally, the ALTF features the premiere of North Country playwright Frederic Glover’s “The Cure: An Adirondack Story,” with performances Sept. 20-29 and venues

to include the arts center, Blue Mountain Lake; View Arts, Old Forge; Tupper Lake Middle/High School; Pendragon Theatre, Saranac Lake; and Tannery Pond Center, North Creek. Another venue is planned and will be announced.

In addition, visual-arts exhibits at the arts center will resume with its Members’ Show, along with number of artists featured all through the season, along with an exhibit of works from the Adirondack Folk School.

In-person workshops also return in 2024 as part of our Workshop Wednesdays, July 10 to Aug. 28. Kids’ Arts Camp activities will again be offered, this year on Fridays, running July 12 to Aug. 30.

Pendragon Theatre announces 2024 summer season

SARANAC LAKE — Secure your seats for an unforgettable summer filled with music, laughter and drama. From iconic hits to exciting new plays, Pendragon Theatre invites you to experience the magic of live theater like never before.

To kick off the 2024 summer season, Pendragon Theatre presents the hit musical, “The Marvelous Wonderettes.” This jukebox musical takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom, where we meet Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy — four girls with hopes and dreams, and their highs and lows over a decade. Featuring over 30 classic ‘50s and ‘60s hits, “The Marvelous Wonderettes” will keep you smiling in this must-take musical trip down memory lane.

Featuring an all-star cast, Pendragon welcomes back Hannah-Kathryn Wall and Kelly McCarty. Making their Pendragon debut are Miranda Macasero and Julia Feinberg. Directed and Choreographed by Pendragon alums Jessica Wagner with musical direction by Hawkins Davis Gardow, you’ll be humming these songs all summer.

Performances run Tuesday through Sunday, July 9-21, with 7 p.m. curtains and Sunday 2 p.m. matinees.

Then in August, Pendragon dives into the Camp Pendragon production of the musical, “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” directed by Hannah-Kathryn Wall. The production will feature over 20 local students, grades six through 12. Camp Pendragon serves to not only give students the opportunity to create a show but also provides a unique, professional experience to the local youth.

Performances for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” are Aug. 8-17. Then, join Pendragon for “A Moveable Feast Reading Series,” a special events reading series revisiting two American comedies and one new play. Three plays in three distinct locations around town. Mix and mingle with Pendragon artists before the show and share a reading with us.

July 27th: “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” the classic American dark comedy by Edward Albee.

July 31st: “God of Carnage,” the hilarious hit-Broadway comedy by Yasmina Reza.

August 3rd: [A new play in development], by Dipti Bramhandkar Broadway’s Anthony Michael Lopez (“Camelot”; “Our Town”) returns to direct with Cara Walters (“Guys & Does”) and Sarah Norris.

Also mark your calendars... in case you missed the hit Winter Carnival production of “Guys & Does,” the show will have a return engagement on Aug. 2 at Paul Smith’s College. Finally, to wrap up the season, Pendragon presents a first-look new play, “Tracks,” by Paula Stanic and directed by Artistic Producer Sarah Norris.

It’s London, 2011. In August, the shooting by police of a British Black 29-year-old, Mark Duggan, sparks unrest and rioting and the nation is tense. Set over a Friday afternoon to Saturday morning, “Tracks” shines a light on the complexities of broken relationships and abandonment over time. A story of growing up, getting older, love and resilience.

Performances run Sept. 3-8 before moving to 59E59 Theaters in New York City for an Off-Broadway run Sept. 12-30. Last year, “Friends with Amenities” premiered at Pendragon prior to a sold-out and critically acclaimed run in New York City. See “Tracks” here first!

Meet the Artist: Larry Poole

Saranac Lake artist Larry Poole works in the area of intaglio printmaking. His involvement in printmaking began since his retirement when he found himself with the opportunity to reengage in his long standing interest in art and design. Combining the recent advances in non-toxic intaglio printmaking along with the changes in photography to digital imagining and the “computer darkroom” allowed him to delve into art in a way he never imagined.

Poole has been delighted by the response to his work, as evidenced by the variety of settings where it has been shown; including more than 50 local and regional juried art exhibitions where his work has been recognized with awards a number of times. His prints have also been selected for publication in the arts journal, Stone Canoe, six different times. In addition he has accepted invitations from a number of different area galleries to produce one and two person exhibitions. Poole had his work exhibited as part of four different artist exchanges, in California, Canada and twice in Mexico. Many examples of his art can be seen at www.printsbylarry.com.

Since immersing himself in printmaking, Poole has assisted and taught a number of workshops in non-toxic printmaking. He has also, demonstrated his techniques at a print studio in Mirabel, Quebec and at Montana State University. He has been involved with BluSeed Studios where he does his printmaking, serving on the Board of Directors from 2005-14 and as its Chair from 2006-14. Poole is also an active member of Saranac Lake Art Works and helped found Northwind Fine Arts cooperative artists’ gallery in Saranac Lake.

Meet the Artist: Diane Leifheit

Diane Leifheit, pastel plein air artist, has moved to the new Point of View studio/gallery, built last year right in her back yard gardens in Paul Smiths. Visitors to the studio there will find florals, still life’s, and landscapes of the Adirondacks and beyond.

Leifheit’s

Point of View former studio, located in a renovated building in Gabriels, served as a place to work and grow. However, the time came to move out of the space.

Last summer, the Leifheit’s made the decision to create a custom-built structure, crafted by the North Country Amish. The new studio is now nearly a year old. “I have to pinch myself almost every day. It so exciting to have a space that works for what I do,” Leifheit said.

The first big impression, as one steps into the space, is the gallery wall of pastel landscapes and still life’s. From there the visitor is drawn into visions large and small, of woods, streams, lakes and fields of the Adirondacks and beyond.

The vaulted ceiling accommodates the easel were work in progress is surrounded by an array of colorful pastel sticks, the tools of her trade. “I’ve only been in the space since October, so some things are not exactly where they will end up in time”, said Leifheit.

Diane is a peripatetic artist in that she travels to various plein air events during the summer. “I am not always at the studio in the summer because painting plein air, working outside, is really where I want to be. But when winter winds blow and the light goes away at four, the studio is the place to come home to.”

The classic Adirondack drive on Route 86 is a prelude to the work shown in the studio/gallery. After a view of the gardens, a chat with the artist, and exploring the gallery space, visitors are invited to bring home a piece of the Adirondacks. The studio is located at the entrance of 516 State Route 86, Paul Smiths, at the big heart painted on a wood palette. The studio is about one hundred feet in on the left. Check www. dianeleifheit.com for hours.

Meet the Artist: Shawn Halperin

Shawn Halperin has been working as an artist in the Adirondacks for the past 25 years, and now shares her studio time between Upper Jay and Fayetteville, New York.

Living in nature, the woods, waters, seeing an owl for the first time, it has all affected her work.

Shawn is a carver, painter, sometimes frame maker, jewelry maker and it all blends together in a great way with one technique encouraging the other.

All the wood used in Shawn’s work is either cedar or spalted yellow birch. It is collected sustainably from land that we have in the Adirondacks or from storm blow down. No bark is ever taken from live trees — that permanently damages the tree for life. Bark is collected only from the forest floor.

The carving tools she uses are hand held pneumatic King Arthur Brand. These allow her to get the subtle curves and shapes that she finds pleasing — she does not use a lathe. The carved wood pieces are painted using oil paints in thin layers. Many layers are needed to get the affect that she wants with the grain showing through. This lets the wood’s character and beauty shine like it should.

The Wood used in the jewelry pieces is usually yellow spalted birch — spaltedwood is wood that has been cut and the natural break down process in the wood creates beautiful patterns and colors. The pieces used in her jewelry collection are made from wood that has aged about 3-4 years. The metals in the jewelry are either silver, sterling silver or bronze with attachment bails and washers made from steel or antique brass.

Annual Cranberry Lake Art Show returns

CRANBERRY LAKE — The 7th annual Cranberry Lake Art Show will take place August 10 and 11 at the Cranberry Lake Fire Hall. Over 45 North Country artists are expected to participate. The artist created pieces will be on display both days, and include paintings, photography, furniture, fabric art, pottery, wooden sculptures and jewelry.

Our seventh show will feature a live auction of decorated Adirondack canoes creatively designed and produced by participating artists. Auctions from past shows have featured decorated Adirondack chairs, wooden fish, mini canoe paddles, Adirondack pack baskets and loons. Todd Moe of NCPR, a media sponsor of the show, will once again be the auctioneer. Nobody does it better than Todd! Come join us under the auction tent, Saturday, August 10, at 3 p.m.

In addition to the live auction, a silent auction of pieces donated by the participating artists is active both show days. The bidding is fierce for these one of a kind pieces of North Country art!

The success of the art show has enabled us to give back to our community. The monies raised have provided scholarships for graduating seniors of the Clifton-Fine School. Funds also benefit the Clifton Community Library, the Cranberry Lake Fire Department, the backpack program at the school and the Clifton Fine School Art Department. In 2023 we were able to award FOUR $1,000 scholarships to seniors at Clifton Fine Central School. We are very proud of these students and the ability to award the scholarships.

Show times

Meet the Artist: Tim Fortune

year marks the 30th anniversary of the Small For-

Tim Fortune, the artist and owner, has held court there, greeting customers and working on his watercolors in the front window for three decades. During that time Saranac Lake has grown into a vibrant and energized creative arts community aided by Tim who started the Art Walks over 20 years ago as well as creating the cooperative gallery the Adirondack Artists Guild which has thrived for 25 years.

Since 2007, watercolor has been his medium of choice, capturing intimate images of what one would experience while walking on a trail or viewing a lake.

His intent is to capture the riveting, often solitary moments to share his personal engagements with nature. Of note are his very large watercolors which can exceed 3’ by 6’ in size. This scale recreates the immersive experience of the artist’s encounter allowing each work to present its own singular character.

As former director for the Adirondack Museum now Adirondack Experience, Caroline Welsh stated: “Artist Tim Fortune’s new work is nothing short of spectacular. It is technically a tour de force demonstrating a lightness and restraint not seen before in his work. The images are powerful and have a spiritual resonance as they draw the viewer in to experience nature. The sentinel pine, the glinting sparkle of sunlight on rushing water, the patterns of snow on the branches or the sunlight on fall leaves, the reincarnation of a milkweed pod underscore the cycles of life and death, the seasons of renewal and decay in powerful and often magnificent paintings.”

Tim’s works have been shown at numerous galleries both nationally and internationally. Several of his pieces are included in corporate collections. His paintings have been exhibited in the American Embassy in Guatemala as part of the Art in Embassies Program of the U.S. Department of State. He has won numerous awards including the prestigious Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Painting at the Society of the Four Arts, Palm Beach Florida. Fortune’s work is also in the permanent collection of the Adirondack Experience in Blue Mountain Lake, New York.

Tim studied art at Tyler School of Art of Temple University where he received a BFA. He later graduated from New York University with a Master of Arts degree in Studio Art and subsequently studied in Italy for several years.

Plenty of plein air to go around What makes plein air painting special?

The Adirondack region has become a hotbed for plein air painting events. Franklin County is home to three of them, including the original, nationally recognized, Adirondack Plein Air Festival in Saranac Lake, as well as the Keeseville Plein Air and Tupper Lake Plein Air Festival.

All plein air events scheduled for the northern Adirondacks this year include:

¯ June 8-15: Publisher’s Invitational Adirondack Paint Week, Paul Smiths

¯ July 16-20: Keeseville Plein Air, as part of their Community Arts Festival.

¯ Aug 12-17: Adirondack Plein Air Festival, Saranac Lake

¯ Sept 18-21: Salmon River Valley Plein Air Festival, Malone

¯ Oct 1-6: Tupper Lake Plein Air Festival, Tupper Lake

What is plein air painting? It is a French term that basically means painting out in the open air. Instead of painting for hours indoors in their studios, artists take their paints and easels to outdoor locations. Natural light and scenic views, whether wilderness or farmland, industrial or village locations, offer unlimited subject matter.

Plein air paintings have to be finished quickly because the lighting and weather can change in a few hours. So rather than having days or weeks to contemplate their work, plein air painters work much more intuitively, painting what they see very quickly.

Plein air painting isn’t just an Adirondack thing — a revival of interest in plein air painting began some 20-plus years ago. Small groups of artists often chose a location and went out and painted as a group, sharing the experience. Festivals developed as artists learned that their audiences enjoyed the idea of being able to watch an artist at work one day and then be able to purchase the wet, framed painting the next.

In 2009, Sandra Hildreth, a Saranac Lake painter and one of the founding members of Saranac Lake ArtWorks, organized the Adirondack Plein Air Festival, which started out with just a few local artists who painted for two days and then hung a show of their

A plein air painting is an art work that, for the most part, is made outside, not in the studio. A plein air painter brings a lightweight set-up to venture into the out of doors, “en plein air” as the French say. A portable easel, a canvas or board, paints brushes, bug repellent, good shoes, a hat are standard, and a snack and the ubiquitous water bottle are a must.

There are all kinds of eventualities the plein air artist has to be ready for — a sunny day that turns rainy, or the wind comes up and wants to knock down the easel, or critters, from barking dogs to black flies — all just to paint outside. The end vision one sees is the effort of lots of planning. The colors of the Adirondack summer or the orange, red, gold of fall beg for different palettes, so the painter needs to prep their box of color for what they will see for the daily excursion into the woods and streams or perhaps the streets of town.

There is always that other animal too that may approach the painter, the curious passerby. At that point it may be time for a break, so there is a bit of chitchat about painting and aunts that paint and this other great place to paint.

What really makes it special, though, is being outdoors in the sun, in the air, painting what is of interest to the artist. The sparkle of light on water, cool shadows in the woods, that red umbrella on the beach, the way Adirondack chairs sit just so on the dock.

A painting made en plein air is not a photograph that captures only an instant, but about three to four hours of time, many blinks of an eye, clouds and sun moving, shifting shadows — a million different decisions that culminate in the final piece. The work may not be completed in one day but it usually is because it is rare the weather will hold its breath for 48 hours.

What makes a plein air painting special is it catches the day, the time, the place. It is one of a kind. In this day and age, that is a rare occurrence.

work on a Sunday afternoon. A few people came to see it. Now, after 16 years, the event has a national reputation, a juried selection process, five and a half days of painting, gives out over $5,000 in prizes, and hosts a huge show and sale in the Harrietstown Town Hall in Saranac Lake.

The Keeseville and Tupper Lake festivals were modeled after the Saranac Lake event and have no trouble attracting artists who want to paint the Adirondack landscapes, from the High Peaks, to the foothills, from mountain lakes to river valleys.

The Publisher’s Invitational Adirondack Paint Week is entirely different. It’s organized by Plein Air Magazine, a direct result of the fact that the publisher has a second home in the Adirondacks. It’s more like a summer camp for artists. The invitational is set up to host 100 artists who come simply for a week of painting and camaraderie.

There is no competition, no prizes, no exhibits — just artists going out in small groups to explore and paint.

Spectators are welcome at all the plein air festivals and most will have schedules or specific locations where the artists can be found, at least some of the time.

The exhibits, however, attract the most attention. Forty artists can frequently do at least two paintings a day, for five days, resulting in a show of more than 400 paintings. Large, small, oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, in a full range of subject matter.

The festivals may also have secondary events as part of their schedules: meet the artists receptions, silent auctions of donated works, and quick draw competitions. It’s best to check schedules of the individual events.

To learn more about these events, visit SaranacLakeArtWorks.org.

Lake City Arts Festival returns for third year

PLATTSBURGH — The Lake City Arts Festival launched its inaugural event in late August 2022 in downtown Plattsburgh. The festival was conceived by The Plattsburgh Arts Coalition and the city of Plattsburgh after hearing many community members express interest in finding a way to showcase and highlight the growing artist community in the North Country.

The festival brought together local musicians, artists, downtown businesses and food trucks to the intersection of Margaret Street and Brinkerhoff Street for an afternoon of live music, art demonstrations, a chalk art festival and Art Market. A highlight of the event was the raku firing demonstration that took place on the front lawn of The Strand Center for the Arts.

“I think the organizing committee would describe [the] event as a success,” says Courtney Meisenheimer, community engagement coordinator for the city of Plattsburgh. “There was music in the streets, and lots of foot traffic downtown. The chalk art festival in Betty Little Arts Park showcased our local talent in action while also providing a space for youth to participate, too.”

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 and will be located in Trinity Park, City Hall and MacDonough Monument Park. The festival features local live music, a beer garden (21+), food truck court, art demonstrations, Art Market, Mural Walk, Kids Art Zone and more. Visit www.LakeCityArtsFest.com for a full list of events.

Exhibits, concerts, classes and more at BluSeed Studios

SARANAC LAKE — BluSeed Studios is celebrating its 22nd year, coming off its 20th anniversary in 2022. While it was much fun and worthy of celebration to look back on its first 20 years, the focus at BluSeed in the past two years, and will be for the upcoming years, is the next 20 years.

While adhering to BluSeed founder Carol Vossler’s vision of creating a space where the alternative arts can flourish, either by being practiced in the studios or experienced in the gallery and performance space, BluSeed looks to the realities of maintaining that vision while keeping an art center open and available to the community — everyone in the community. BluSeed Studios added the tag line “Community Art’s Center” to its sign in front of the building, as well as the header on the website and Facebook page and letterhead, to remind us — BluSeed board, staff and volunteers, and the community at large — that BluSeed is open to all, to experiment, to experience, to take that first step in creating some art, or take that next step of pushing an experienced artist’s own envelope.

BluSeed maintains a year-round schedule of art exhibitions, concerts and studio classes — for details go to bluseedstudios.org or stay tuned in with the BluSeed Studios Facebook page.

BluSeed also offers its performance/exhibition space for rent as a space to groups and organizations for special events or parties. For more information, contact Executive Director Marissa Hernandez at 518-891-3799 or admin@bluseedstudios.org.

have the opportunity to learn and participate, experiment and diverge, exhibit and perform, move ideas and aesthetics forward, and to share this diversity as an all-inclusive gateway to artistic experience.

How it Started

In March 2001, founder Carol Marie Vossler, with the help of a business partner, family and friends, began transforming a 7000-square-foot, neglected train warehouse into a home for BluSeed Studios, Inc. Built in 1930, the building was originally used as a hardware store and warehouse to hold cast-iron pipes and fittings that were unloaded directly off freight trains. Later it housed a cobbled living and retail space and storage space for antiques. During the renovation, care was taken to retain the industrial feel of the space. In 2002 the doors opened and BluSeed studios came to life with wedding celebrations, art exhibitions, concerts and community meetings hosted by other organizations. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, BluSeed has evolved to the next level, moving forward under the assistance and guidance of a the board of directors, passionate in their efforts to “connect the community to the arts.” BluSeed Studios is active year round with exhibits, concerts, classes and other programming, for all ages.

Monotype prints made by printmaker and painter Katherine Levin-Lau are seen above on display during BluSeed’s 20-year celebration in September 2022.

A vibrant arts community in Tupper Lake

TUPPER LAKE — Since 1976, Tupper Lake has been celebrating its artists and artisans that make up the small community. Before Tupper Arts, there was the Tupper Lake arts council, then named Tupper Lake Presents. Throughout the ‘80s, ‘90s, and early 2000s, the arts council continued strong, most notably starting the annual tradition that is the Tupper Lake Arts Show, now entering its 51st year. As time went on, there was a decline in support for Tupper Lake Presents, mostly due to a lack of community interest and volunteers.

Several years later in 2018, current Tupper Arts Vice President Louise McNally enthusiastically headed the planning to re-establish the arts council as the community entity it is today. Along with eleven excited board members, the arts council was saved and renamed as Tupper Arts and incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to allow for the collection of donations to start strengthening the arts involvement in Tupper Lake.

As Tupper Arts has grown, it’s seen several buildings around Tupper Lake as temporary homes, including the Tupper Lake Public Library, the Ginsberg Building (now the location of the Adirondack Store & Gallery), and the Train Station in the Tupper Lake Junction, until serendipitously settling on its current home in 106 Park Street, which came to current board member Liz Cordes in a dream. From these locations, Tupper Arts set up a tradition of year-round programming to involve the community and provide easy access to the arts, through gallery shows, classes for all ages, live performances, and community events.

In 2020, Tupper Arts launched its 2021-2023 Capital Campaign with the hopes of buying the building at 106 Park Street and completing interior and exterior improvements to better fit Tupper Arts’ growing needs. With the help of generous donors and grant funds, Tupper Arts has raised over half of their $450,000 goal and bought their permanent home on October 28, 2021.

Tupper Arts has proudly accepted grants through NYS Council on the Arts, the ADK Foundation, the Aseel Legacy Fund, ADK for Kids Foundation, Main Street Grant, Stewart’s Grants, the Cloudsplitter Foundation, and more, which have all gone towards Tupper Arts’ goal of supporting artists and artisans within and around the Tupper Lake region and supplying artistic opportunities for the Tupper Lake community.

Depot Theatre announces 2024 season lineup

WESTPORT — Complete with a little bit of country, a little rock and roll, and a lot of fun and inspriration the Depot Theatre has announced its 2024 professional main stage lineup.

Lights go up on the main stage with “Analog and Vinyl,” a musical rom-com romp featuring a memorable score infused with the influences of Elvis Costello, the Beatles and Brian Wilson. The musical is a “delicious, devilish tale of Harrison, a young record shop owner in danger of losing his family’s store, Rodeo Girl, the seemingly spacey — yet weirdly-wise — hipster obsessed with him, and a mysterious stranger who rocks their world with an offer they might not be able to refuse — and it’s not for vintage vinyl,” a news release from the theatre reads. Performances will be June 27 to July 14.

Next up on the stage will be “Every Brilliant Thing,” a play that the theatre describes as “hilarious, heart-wrenching, and heart-warming.” It’s a play about the efforts of a young boy to will his mother to live by creating a list of all the best things in the world; everything worth living for. The play is a “transcendent and tender coming-of-age journey that reminds us to

pay attention to life’s smallest joys — and to each other,” according to the theatre. Performances will run from July 18 to Aug. 4.

To top off the season, the Depot will serve up some rollicking down-home entertainment with “Pump Boys And Dinettes.” This boot-stomping country-western musical features Prudie and Rhetta Cupp, gals from the Double Cupp Diner, singing and performing along with talented guys from the gas station across the road. “Pump Boys” received unanimous raves on and off Broadway, including on the Depot Theatre stage in 1997. “Pump Boys” will run from Aug. 8-25.

The 2024 season was curated by the Depot’s Artistic Production Management team, Beth Glover and Karen Lewis.

“We wanted to choose a season of joy and feel-good shows that have great stories, heart and provide escapism,” said Glover. “Join us this summer at The Depot and take a journey to some brighter, more inspiring places.”

The professional productions are preceded on the main stage by a special Depot Theatre Academy production of “The 25Th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” with three performances by the region’s experienced student artists on June 7-9.

The Depot Theatre is a non-profit, professional theatre located in a historic, functioning 1876 train station in Westport, and it is the only theatre in the Adirondacks that operates under an agreement with Actors’ Equity Association.
