Walks that stop you in your tracks Saranac Lake Art Walks, the Third Thursday of every month

T

he brainchild of Saranac Lake artist Tim Fortune, Third Thursday Art Walks in Saranac Lake have been taking place annually from June through September for more than 20 years. The walks began as a way to help revitalize downtown Saranac Lake, as well as to showcase the work of artists who have chosen this small Adirondack village as their creative hub and to spotlight the historic downtown. Art Walks have played a major role in the effort to brand Saranac Lake as the foremost arts community of the Adirondacks. The 2019 Art Walks begin on June 20 and run through Sept. 19. Third Thursdays bring art to the streets of Saranac Lake — not just the visual arts, but also literary and performing arts. Community members and visitors to the village alike mingle on the sidewalks in a party-like atmosphere enjoying the outdoor performances while taking in the Adirondack air. All levels of skills are represented in the artist displays — from amateur to professional levels and even student artists. Founder and organizer Tim Fortune says, “The Art Walks bring artists and performers to the people by filling the downtown sidewalks and parks with the creativity of children, students and professionals in a celebration of the arts and our community.”

SUMMER/FALL 2019

In addition to the pop-up street art exhibits and performances, there are no fewer than a dozen Art Walk Galleries/Studios that are open for all to wander to and from on these Thursday evenings in the summer months. Many of downtown businesses also open up their sidewalk space — and sometimes their interior spaces — to give artists more exhibit and performance spaces to explore. The “walks” are self-guided, with a start time of 5 p.m. and an end time of 7:30 p.m. In the past, there have been as many as 30 outdoor venues supporting entertainment from magicians and musicians to wood carvers and painters — all lining the streets of Saranac Lake. Event schedules and maps are available on the day of the event at many of the local venues. Some of these venues include the village parks, art galleries, nonprofit spaces and various downtown businesses. A sampling of participating Art Walks galleries and businesses include: Adirondack Artist Guild, Adirondack Carousel, Art at the Pink House, BluSeed Studios, Cape Air, Mark Kurtz Photography, Lake Flower Landing, North Winds Fine Arts, The VIC at Paul Smiths, Pendragon Theatre & Gallery, the Small Fortune Studio, Downhill Grill and Left Bank Cafe. Third Thursday Art Walks are one of the many cultural events sponsored by Saranac Lake ArtWorks now under the umbrella of BluSeed Studios of Saranac Lake. ebecca Kelly Ballet and the Tahawus Cultural Center are the two main programs of Appleby Foundation. And they are brimming with creative energy with activities in Lake Placid, Plattsburgh and AuSable Forks. Dance offerings include Rebecca Kelly’s third annual Choreography Workshop June 24-28 at Guibord’s North Country School of Ballet in Plattsburgh. For more information, call 518-561-5550. Inspired by the Adirondack surroundings, New York Citybased Rebecca Kelly Ballet has made the North Country its summer home working throughout the region since 1987. Each summer new and repertory works are performed at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. Among this season’s offerings are the performances of “A Fine Line” and “Entanglements” at LPCA on Thursday, July 18 at 8 p.m. For tickets or more information, call the box office at 518-523-2512. For the 26th summer, the RKB professional dancers welcome aspiring semi-professionals to beginning dancers to the OnStage Performance Program, July 8-19 at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. In this demanding program, local participants mingle with visiting dancers from the United States and abroad, and learn about and understand choreography through original dances specially crafted for them. While broadening skills and confidence, Kelly’s choreography also extends their horizons through the art, in dances that reflect and encompass world culture, deep feeling, science in motion, environmental concerns and topical issues. Registration is ongoing through LPCA. The Youth Performance on July 19 at 10:30 a.m. concludes the Onstage program. The Tahawus Cultural Center, located on Main Street in AuSable Forks has a busy spring and lively summer lined up in its two galleries and Cloudsplitter Dance Studio. A community-wide Open

SUMMER/FALL 2019

Studio Tours expand in 13th year

N

David Woodward

SUMMER/FALL 2019

ow in its 13th year, this series of Studio Tours charts an art course that takes participants through the picturesque greater Saranac Lake area. For the third consecutive year, the studio tours will be every last weekend of the month from June to November — with a November surprise. Studio tours offer a unique opportunity to meet area artists and see their work or see artists at work in an intimate setting. With such a large population of artists in the greater Saranac Lake region, it is nearly impossible to do the whole tour in a single weekend. By opening the tours up to a sixmonth schedule, folks can take their time and have a leisurely experience with artists in one area, then travel to a different artist cluster for another weekend later in the summer or fall. They’re not just for adults … If you are traveling with children, don’t rule out taking them to some studio tour demonstrations.

There is work going on that is fascinating for all ages. Woodcarver Mark Paul keeps busy and may even finish another carving while visitors take in his many intricate works. He may even offer a lesson while you are visiting. And it’s always a thrill to catch blacksmith David Woodward while his fires are burning. The studio tours are self-guided so you can set your own pace and spend as much time as you like with a particular artist. They are open to the public with regular hours from 10 to 5 p.m., Friday to Sunday on the last weekends of the month beginning June 28 and running through the end of November. Every month there may be different artist participants, so it’s important to check the new map-schedule that comes out monthly and is available at the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce and elsewhere. Details and locations can be found on the ArtWorks website at: www.saranaclakeartworks.com. (Continued on Page 14)

The summer program will include 32 extremely talented emerging vocal artists chosen from hundreds of applicants. As part of their training and along with a professional faculty drawn from the opera and musical theater fields and universities and conservatories across the country, they will present a full season of opera and musical productions. The four-show mainstage season in 2019 includes Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, The Manchurian Candidate, an opera by Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell, and the ever-popular Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein. As part of Seagle Music Colony’s commitment to presenting and developing new Shelly Mihm and Maria Vasilevskaya perform during the Seagle Music Colony’s 2018 production of (Photo by Eric Kephart, courtesy of Seagle Music Colony) operas and musicals, the Amer- Julius Caesar. ican Center for New Works Development (ACNWD) was launched in the fall of 2017. During the 2019 fall season of the ACNWD, Seagle Music Colony will foster workshops of four new operas and each workshop will include a public performance. More information about this exciting program can be found on the Seagle Music Colony website. In its continued mission to cultivate new audiences, Seagle Music Colony will also continue a summer and fall tour of a children’s opera and this year the show will be a fun new multicultural opera entitled Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers, by Indian-American composer Kamala Sankaram. Also touring in the early fall is a nostalgic revue entitled Hot! The Music of Cole Porter.

SUMMER/FALL 2019

T

he 11th Adirondack Plein Air Festival will begin in Saranac Lake on August 12. By the time this is published, the 50 participating artists will have been selected from the large number who annually apply. There will be five days of painting and then a huge Show & Sale. The public is invited to come and be a spectator, and maybe become a collector. What is plein air painting? Artists set up an easel and paint a location right on the spot. It’s usually done in three to four hours because the light changes too much to spend all day on a painting. It’s all about capturing the spirit or essence of a place — they are spontaneous and direct, the first impression. Yet for every minute a plein air artist spends out in the field, working quickly to create a painting in a few hours, they have spent many, many other hours learning and developing their skills. There is a full schedule of events and painting locations, but anyone visiting the Saranac Lake area between Aug. 12 and 17 is likely to spot artists out painting during all hours of the day, and night. Monday, Aug. 12 is check-in, and then artists may start painting. There will be maps and directions to painting locations available for both artists and spectators to pick up at event headquarters: the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery, 52 Main St., Saranac Lake. There will be a “Meet the Artists” Reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at the Hotel Saranac and they may start painting nocturnes (paintings done at night).

Each artist will be invited to submit one nocturne for a display at BluSeed Studios, with the winner announced at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15. Tuesday, Aug. 13 is “Paint the VIC” Day and all the artists will be out on the trails at the Paul Smith’s College VIC, with miles of

It’s all about capturing the spirit or essence of a place. trails and scenic views of mountains, wetlands, brooks and forests, just north of the intersection of Routes 86 and 30. This is a great opportunity to be outdoors and enjoy the Adirondack environment, and to watch artists at work. Wednesday, Aug. 14 artists will be harder to find as it is “Paint the Adirondacks” Day. They may choose any locations in the area to paint. Some head up Whiteface Mountain, or paint along the AuSable River near Wilmington, along Norman Ridge near Vermontville, in Lake Placid, Tupper Lake and wherever they find views. Thursday, Aug. 15 will be the best day to observe as it is “Paint the Town” Day and all the artists will be expected to paint in the historic village of Saranac Lake. One of the main features of the festival is the silent auction that will be set up by 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Adirondack Artists Guild

Gallery. Artists are asked to donate a small painting and the proceeds are used to help support the arts in the local schools. It’s a great way to start collecting original art, so stop in and place a bid. It’s also a 3rd Thursday ArtWalk day, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., so there will be other artist displays set up downtown along with live music at a number of locations. BluSeed Studios will host the Nocturne Contest and the winner will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 the artists will be out at the Saranac Lake Fish & Game Club, which borders the Saranac River, in the morning for “Paint the Saranac Day.” It’s just north of the village on state Route 3, heading toward Bloomingdale. That afternoon their framed paintings are due and the Special Preview Party will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in Harrietstown Town Hall. Tickets are $20 per person, but attendees will have the first look at all the 300-plus fresh, new paintings and more than $5,000 in prizes will be given out at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 begins with the “Quick Draw” Competition. Celebrating 75 years of music education

T

he summer of 2019 marks the 75th year for the acclaimed Meadowmount School of Music located in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Founded by master teacher Ivan Galamian, Meadowmount continues to be the model by which other programs follow. Meadowmount’s rich history began in 1944 when Ivan Galamian moved his New York City studio to the Adirondacks one summer to immerse his students in practice without distractions that city life can bring. In 1952, the school incorporated as a non-profit and created the Society For Strings, Inc. The alumni represent a broad spectrum of talent from Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Kyung-Wha Chung, Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell, James Ehnes, and on and on. Concertmasters from around the world have spent their summers there, including Andres Cardenes, Glenn Dicterow, Jacques Israelievitch, Malcolm Lowe, William Preucil, Jing Wang and Josef Spacek, representing orchestras from Pittsburgh to the Czech Philharmonic. Meadowmount continues this rich heritage today. Housing about 200 students ages 13 to over 30 who practice five hours a day on their solo and chamber music studies. Add to this focus, an extensive chamber music program, a strong faculty and world-renowned quest artists. From the school’s humble beginnings of rented housing to now encompassing more than 52 building on 260 acres, including a

500-seat concert hall and a recital hall. Meadowmount continues to thrive 75 years later, setting the standards on which other programs emulate. Concert are held on campus, every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. The opening concert is Friday, July 28, featuring pianist Lydia Artymiw and Meadowmount faculty. The annual benefit concert will be held Aug. 4 and feature James Ehnes and the Ehnes Quartet. Join Meadowmount in celebrating 75 years of training students for distinguished careers in music.

Essex County Arts Council expands cultural experiences

By LINDA DOLLY he voices are giddy with excitement. Many patrons have donned their best clothes. They may have read about the event in the paper, online or heard the details from a friend. They planned their day, possibly their week around it, and it is time. The show, concert or museum tour is about to begin. And when it does, a hush comes over the crowd. If the audience is excited, imagine how the artists are feeling. They have been planning for months or longer because there is more to a “show” than the show itself. There are hours of prep time, and oh yeah, the finances. And that ladies and gentlemen is where the “CAP Grants” come into play. CAP stands for Cultural Assistance Program. These grants used for many things including bringing a hot talent into town, paying the light bill while a cast practices their lines or advertising for an art exhibit. CAP Grants, $18,000 last year, were funded by Essex County taxpayers and corporate and private donations. The Essex County Arts Council administers this program with funds allocated by the Essex County Board of Supervisors. Thirty-four organizations applied for the 2019

grant season, and many will receive financial support. The project cost and its cultural impact for the community are instrumental in grant allocations. An independent committee makes these assessments. In 2018, CAP Grants funded a wide diversity of programs in our communities: square dancing in Schroon Lake, classical music in Elizabethtown, an arts and crafts fair in Westport and an Art Director for a children’s summer workshop series in Ticonderoga, among many others.

If you would like to know about the CAP Grant awardees for 2019, keep an eye out for the Essex County Arts Coun-

Cranberry Lake Art Show Cranberry Lake Art Show Cranberry Lake Fire Hall Aug. 10-11 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

T

he fourth annual Cranberry Lake Art Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 10-11, 2019, in Cranberry Lake at the Fire Hall on state Route 3. The show brings local artists together to showcase their art and to “shine the light” on Cranberry Lake. The more than 40 North Country artists participating have very diverse artistic mediums, featuring glass blowing, oils and watercolors, wood fish and decoys, quilting, rug hooking, jewelry making and photography. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. All are welcome to an artist’s reception Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., immediately followed by an auction of original art created by the show artists. The auction will feature artistic creations incorporating hand-carved wood fish as the centerpiece of their art. The 2018 artist decorated Adirondack chair auction was an overwhelming success. The money raised last year supported the creation of two $1,000 scholarships for deserving students of CliftonFine Central School entering art or literacy studies. Show organizers are excited about the 2019 auction and the continuation of the scholarship program. A silent auction of artist supplied pieces runs throughout the show, providing a chance to take home a piece of local art. For more information, contact Marilyn Zimber at mczimber@aol.com.
