Volunteer of the year: Vivian Smith
Vivian Smith poses next to the MAC’s Safe Ride Continued van. By BEN GOCKER Staff Writer TUPPER LAKE — The first thing a visitor to Vivian Smith’s office in Tupper Lake might notice is the collection of wasps’ nests and beehives decorating her walls. It’s perhaps a not unusual choice of rustic decor for a native of the North Country like Smith, but these abandoned insect dwellings tell a more personal story. “When my nieces and nephews were younger, they couldn’t pronounce the ‘V’ in Vivian,” Smith explained. “The way they said it was like ‘B.’ So instead of Aunt Vivian I became Aunt Bee.” The nickname is apt. Between her day job at Catholic Charities, where she works as coordinator for both the Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and her volunteer work as founder and president of Tupper Lake’s MAC’s Safe Ride Continued, Smith is as busy as any bee pollinating flowers in a field. “I’m the great enabler of life.”
Smith said, laughing. “That’s why I work in social services. I love to help people, love to give people the benefit of the doubt.” How MAC’s happened Smith’s desire to assist those in need through MAC’s Continued — whose mission is to provide free and confidential transportation services in an effort to reduce the occurrence of drunk driving in the Tupper Lake area — sprang from her own experience witnessing loved ones hurt by alcohol, as well as a tragic loss experienced by a close friend. As its name suggests, MAC’s Safe Ride Continued did not begin with Vivian Smith. In 2009, Smith’s friend Giselle Kress lost her son, Matthew Girouard, in an alcohol-related car accident. Along with Matthew in the car that night was his friend Craig Sears, who was also killed. Looking to prevent similar accidents, Kress founded MAC’s Safe Ride in Old Forge in 2010. The name MAC’s is a combination of Matthew and Craig. As a nod to

the boys’ favorite basketball team, the Syracuse University Orange, the organization’s logo is emblazoned orange and blue. “It started because Giselle needed to be reactive to the situation she was dealing with: the loss of her son.” Smith said. “She had two younger boys and a husband and a full-time job so she needed to carry on. And so she started MAC’s and the town stood behind her beautifully.” After brushes with drunk driving in her own family, the loss of a nephew to cancer at 26, and the death of a friend’s child due to a drug overdose, Vivian decided she needed to be proactive rather than reactive in facing life’s traumas. “You know, some things happened, and I just wanted to do something positive. I wanted to see something good.” Smith explained. “My cousin was visiting from Houston, and she donated an old vehicle, and we got it started. I had a meeting and invited people to come, and the board (Continued on Page 10)

Interfaith Food Pantry continues to support those in need
By CHRIS KNIGHT Senior Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — Time and again, the community comes through for the Saranac Lake Interfaith Food Pantry. The pantry’s shelves stay stocked in large part by donations of food from local churches, civic organizations, grocery stores and many generous people throughout the area. The pantry is run by a team of volunteers, led by Anne Cooney of Saranac Lake. “It’s a whole village that’s serving people,” she said. “I think it’s one of the greatest resources for the community because we give away food free every single week. Every Saturday from 10 to 12, people can come in, no questions asked. They fill out a little paperwork if it’s their first time, and that’s it.” In her 23 years as a food pantry volunteer, Cooney said the need for it hasn’t wavered, although the number of people it serves varies. In January, the pantry served 33 families, or more than 55 people. “It fluctuates,” Cooney said. “Now we have more college kids living in apartments, and we take care of them. We just had two of them come last week and said they’ve been living in an apartment but they’re running out of money. College is expensive, and they’re away from home. They may not be the best budget people. So, we help them out. There are fewer seniors coming, but they’re able to get more from the (Saranac Lake) adult center and meals on wheels.” The pantry is located at 15 Bloomingdale Ave. There are a few posters around town advertising its hours of operation, and organizers are talking about creating a website or Facebook page for it, but most people find out about the food pantry through word of mouth or the local churches, Cooney said. “They can call any church, and the church will refer them to myself or other volunteers and we’ll meet the people there if it’s an emergency during the week,” she said. “Suppose you just

Most people go through the church. That’s the easiest way.” The paperwork people have to fill out to use the food pantry is a simple, one-page form, Cooney explained. “We kind of need proof that they need to be there, because we do have some people who like to take advantage of it,” she said. “When they come in initially, we just ask for a driver’s license or library card or AARP card so we can see their name. But we don’t take pictures or require ID. The form just lists how many kids are living in the home with you, or if you have other adults living in the home. There has to be a little bit of accountability there.” The amount of food the pantry provides to one family each week is based on a list it gets from the

Northeast Regional Food Bank in Latham, which provides some of the food to the pantry. “It’s based on the number of people in the home,” Cooney said. “Say you have two kids and yourself, that’s three people. I can give you a certain number of boxes of cereal and cans of fruit and cans of vegetables. We actually don’t limit it very much. We just give. We’re just very lucky to have it here in Saranac Lake.” The pantry orders food through the Food Bank about once a month. It’s picked up in Latham by volunteers and brought back to Saranac Lake, where other volunteers unpack it, stock the shelves and serve it on Saturdays. “The rest of the food comes from donations from different organizations in the community,” (Continued on Page 39)

As population ages, Mercy Care volunteers offer friendship
By ANTONIO OLIVERO Staff Writer LAKE PLACID — Sitting in the quiet, peaceful library at the immaculate stained-glass offices of Mercy Care for the Adirondacks, Executive Director Donna Beal lays out the facts of the aging demographics here in the Tri-Lakes. Beal mentions how 20 percent of the current population in Essex County is 65 or older, and how it’s projected in just 13 years — by 2030 — one out of every three people will be a senior. She also shares how a few years ago North Country Home Services — a company contracted by the county that provides almost all for-profit homecare services in the region — wasn’t able to provide services to 6,500 seniors requesting authorized home health care services in Essex and Franklin counties. “That, to us,” Beal said, “was a real crisis.” Two years ago Mercy Care of the Adirondacks helped to launch the Home Health Care Crisis in the Adirondacks Campaign, a coalition of more than 100 organizations in New York striving to find solutions to serve a growing population of seniors who need help individually. In recent months, it’s been recognized as a statewide problem. And one of the focuses of the Mercy Care campaign was to raise awareness of the unique needs of people who need care in remote areas, places like the TriLakes where the ratio of baby boomers to younger demographics is particularly imbalanced, and skewing further in the future. “The need in our rural communities is unique,” Beal said, “because we have long distances from services, cold severe winters, and many young people leave for education and their career, their aging parents often need services.” As a nonprofit organization established in 2007 as a renewed mission of the Sisters of Mercy, a group that first came to the Adirondacks nearly 125 years ago, Mercy Care helps to fill the service void in the North Country
Donna Beal, Executive Director of Mercy Care for the Adirondacks, and Office Coordinator Jenn Grisi, right, help to run the friendship volunteer program with Sister Catherine Cummings (not pictured). by providing more than 125 friendship volunteers in the TriLakes region. These volunteers are of all ages from all over the area. Nearing the program’s 10-year anniversary, volunteers have helped locals in their 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even one woman older than 100. “There just aren’t government programs to relieve isolation and loneliness of elders,” Beal said. “Our sole purpose is to relieve elders’ isolation and loneliness, (and enhance) their connection to community — the community and fullness of life.” As of March — 10 years to the month after Mercy Care was launched — 135 volunteers were helping 107 elders in the greater Tri-Lakes region. The program has kept pace with the goal Mercy Care set for itself: a dozen new volunteers to train,

recruit and pair with lonely elders that first year. Mercy Care runs the program thanks to charitable contributions and grants. The volunteers don’t receive any sort of reimbursement and it’s no cost to elders. But the sign-up and training process is detailed, intended to pair volunteers and seniors who are looking for the same experience through the program. Three times a year, Mercy Care conducts friendship volunteer training, once each in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake. The seven-and-a-half hour training session includes guest presenters and is led by Sister Catherine Cummings, a registered nurse and qualified parish nurse educator who helped cultivate the educational component of the program. grew, and we filed a 501(c)3 (status for a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation), and we had a fundraiser, and things just happened.”
mean, we have some people with babies.” Smith said. “But people are very dedicated. Maybe once, we had a volunteer not show up to drive. I couldn’t be any prouder. It’s a great track record.”
Getting it going On New Year’s Eve 2014, MAC’s Continued picked up and dropped off its first passenger. Since then, Smith and her team of volunteers have given 8,732 rides to people in need of safe transport. Though Smith has been named this year’s Tri-Lakes Volunteer of the Year, she insists it’s not a oneperson show. “Volunteer of the Year is an amazing thing. I do not feel I deserve that by myself. I didn’t do this by myself,” she said. “People came to me and wanted to be a part of it. We have a great board. We have 12 people, and they work so hard. They’re overworked. They over-give, really.” Keeping the van running every weekend — from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and covering special events in Tupper Lake where alcohol is served such as the recent Brewski — is demanding. Though the all-volunteer staff works tirelessly, each shift requires a driver and navigator, so the demand for volunteers remains high. “We need more volunteers. I
Keeping it going To keep MAC’s Continued afloat financially, Smith relies on the generosity of community members, an annual fundraising event and paid advertising on the van itself. In addition to her board members, who are each responsible for the maintenance and care of the van for one month a year, Smith also cites numerous partners without whom, she says, MAC’s Continued never would have thrived. “The Lions Club supports us. Leroy’s auto repair gave us a van, did all of the repairs for free and never asked for any recognition.” Smith said. “And Stacked Graphics prints all of our T-shirts. People are so generous. I really have no complaints.” The full list of the partners who helped bring Smith’s dream to reality can be found printed on the back doors of the van. Smith is currently at work organizing MAC’s Continued’s annual golf tournament and fundraiser. But as her hive-minded alter ego, Aunt Bee, might declare, this, too, is not a one-person show.
“Oh, my God,” Smith enthused, “people are so generous. We auction off televisions. People rent their camps. (We give away) baskets with cookbooks, dinners, hair and nail (treatments), tools and golf bags, massages. We go around town and beg people for stuff, and they give.” The future Going forward, Smith says she would welcome the introduction of ride-booking services such as Uber to the region. Rather than a competitor, Smith views such businesses as another option in keeping the roads safe. As for the future of MAC’s Continued, Smith has no shortage of ideas. “I would love to see this become a municipal service with a paid position,” she said. “(MAC’s) could bring kids to the beach during the summer.” But if MAC’s Continued was no longer a volunteer organization, how would Smith fulfill her own passion to help those in need? “I want to run for judge (in Piercefield) next November,” Smith said. “I’ve always wanted to run for judge. My grandfather, James Powers, was a judge. I want to make a difference there, too. It would be a passion for me. It wouldn’t just be a position. I don’t do anything if I’m not passionate about it.”
Mercy Care volunteers offer friendship (Continued from Page 8)
“She plays matchmaker,” Beal said. Friendship volunteers perform a different function than the kind of home health aides the county provides seniors, as Mercy Care friendship volunteers do not provide hands-on personal care or assist with medicine. Beal describes it, rather, as a “social model,” where at least once a week for a couple of hours friendship volunteers help seniors do things such as go grocery shopping or provide companionship such as a trip to the Lake Placid Public Library to find audiobooks. After new volunteers complete training, Beal, Cummings and the other key component of Mercy Care’s program, Office Coordinator Jenn Grisi, complete other final steps that include criminal background checks, following up with three references for each volunteer and a personal interview with Sister Catherine to determine what interests they have in sharing with elders and their schedule of availability.
Beal said most applicants are approved for the program due to their innate individual altruistic ambition, and about 90 percent of the matches Sister Catherine puts together work out. Volunteers then set their own schedules with their new “friends.” She added that 75 percent of both volunteers and people assisted are women, Mercy Care also has several Intake Specialists — retired social workers — who enter the homes of the elders to conduct intake interviews to determine what their needs are. Beal said, friendships often last many years. She said some of the pairings between volunteers and elders are going on six years. “They walk that journey of their years with them as they age,” Beal said. “And maybe as their health declines, maybe volunteers help to see some additional services are needed.” (Continued on Page 39)

who need help,” Cooney said. “Of course, I’d like to have somebody take over my part of the job, but nobody seems to want to do it. It’s too much work. But we’ve gotten it so it works. We have quite a few really good volunteers. Everybody does a little part so it’s not so overwhelming to me. It’s a team approach.”

“Is that number finite?” she asked. “I’m always just so amazed when more and more people keep stepping up. One of the reasons I think is people, especially if newly retired, are looking for purpose and meaning moving forward. The Hannaford supermarket in Lake Placid provides bread every other Saturday. People donate food in boxes left at the two Tops Markets stores in the village. The supply of food is pretty steady throughout the year, but Cooney said donations tend to dip in the summer, particularly in August, when people take vacations and are out of town. Bitters & Bones donated more than $5,000, part of the proceeds from its Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, to the pantry last year. It gave the pantry $8,000 from the same event in 2015. Keith Gorgas organizes an annual benefit concert that raises money for the food pantries in Saranac Lake and Vermontville. “There’s a lot of private, individual people who give us donations of money, too,” Cooney said. “We bank it and it goes back into produce and food we don’t get from the Food Bank.” The food pantry used to be run by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, but now it’s a stand-
