Volunteers of the year: Vance and Maggie Mortensen
From left, Jerry Manning, Judy Bibeau, Maggie and Vance Mortensen, Phil Calabrese and Shadow help out at Grace Pantry inside Baldwin House at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Saranac Lake.

Couple fully commits to Saranac Lake charities
By GLYNIS HART Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — Vance and Maggie Mortensen always wanted to do this. Maggie taught school “forever,” and Vance was resident chaplain at Hartwick Hospital in Connecticut, before which time he worked for insurance companies, designing databases. Now they spend most of their time volunteering in Saranac Lake. They ring bells for the Salvation Army. They put together emergency food boxes for people in crisis. They work at the Grace Pantry and the Community Lunchbox soup kitchen, coordinate coat drives, round up donations and manage other volun-
teers. Now the Enterprise news staff, following up on nominations from the community, has chosen them as the Tri-Lakes Volunteers of the Year. “This is what we wanted to do, but we couldn’t because we had to work and raise kids,” said Maggie, standing in Grace Pantry. The Mortensens are surrounded by shelves stocked with dry goods — shampoo, laundry soap, diapers, toothpaste — that SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) won’t buy. Grace Pantry doesn’t offer food because other groups do that, but it recently received help from Jazzy’s Place, a philanthropic foundation, which enabled it to offer dog and cat food.
Grace Pantry opens once a week, Wednesdays, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Baldwin House at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. When the Mortensens retired, they moved to Saranac Lake. Maggie, who arrived a few months before Vance, walked into St. Luke’s and offered to volunteer. The woman running Grace Pantry at the time needed someone to take her spot while she underwent back surgery. With one thing and another, there was a need, and the Mortensens were glad to fill it. Four years later, the two of them run Grace Pantry with about 25 volunteers. (Continued from Page 12)

Chef Kevin Timm from the High Peaks Resort’s Dancing Bears Restaurant ladles out some homemade beef stew at the Adirondack Community Church’s lunch on Jan. 24.

By GRIFFIN KELLY Staff Writer LAKE PLACID — A handful of people sat down at the dining tables in the Adirondack Community Church on Jan. 24, like they do every Wednesday for the community lunch. This time, pressed up against the wall was a table stacked half a foot high with loaves of rye, pumpernickel and Italian breads for anyone to take. In the kitchen, cooks ladled out the day’s lunch — beef stew made with brisket, filet and short rib that was braised for 12 hours overnight. Also in the jus were wild mushrooms, parsnips, carrots, turnips, peas and sweet corn. As a side dish, a tossed salad was served with mixed greens and tomatoes. Chef Kevin Timm prepared the lunch along with help from his crew at the High Peaks Resort’s Dancing Bears Restaurant. For the past seven years, the Adirondack Community Church has held a free lunch every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. One of the people who organizes the lunches, Jim Hadjis,
‘It’s good to help people. I feel we don’t do that too much these days.’ Chris Popluhar
said the community meals provide food for the less fortunate, people on social security and people who need some type of social connection. Hadjis used to do the cooking but has since stepped out of the kitchen for the most part. “I’m not a kid anymore,” Hadjis said. “I don’t cook as much as I used to.” That job is now delegated to different groups within the community. Since April 2017, every fourth Wednesday of the month,
Timm and some volunteers from the Dancing Bears cook and serve food at the Adirondack Community Church’s community lunch program. Both Timm and Hadjis agreed that the High Peaks Resort’s lunches normally draw the biggest crowds. “I think we get a consistent turnout,” Timm said. “Our week is usually one of the more popular.” In the winter, it’s a little harder for older residents to get out of the house, but in the summertime, the High Peaks Resort’s lunch can attract as many as 75 people, according to Hadjis. On Jan. 24, Timm was accompanied by line cook Chris Popluhar and human resources representative Nancy Butler. Popluhar had just started working at the Dancing Bears only a few weeks ago, and he’s already fitting in well “You’d barely think he’s new,” Timm said. “It feels like he’s been working with us for awhile.” (Continued on Page 14)

John Quinn sits atop one of the grooming machines he uses to smooth out the surface of the cross-country skiing trails on the Tupper Lake Golf Course.
Clearing the way for skiers
(Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone)
By AARON CERBONE Staff Writer TUPPER LAKE — The crosscountry skiing trails at the government-owned golf course are the only free-to-use, dog friendly, groomed cross-country trails in the Tri-Lakes area, and on Feb. 8, town Councilman John Quinn was out preparing those trails after the town received several inches of snow. Quinn brings the cross-country trail groomer to a stop along the Cranberry Pond Loop across the pond from the Big Tupper Ski Mountain and looks over at the white trails streaking down the mountain’s northern face. He does this every time he grooms, he says, usually he takes a minute or two, enjoying his coffee, listening to classic rock and studying the mountain he learned to alpine ski on. “I grew up there, my kids grew up there,” Quinn said. When the ski area closed in
All these machines were funded by a combination of taxpayer dollars and donations left by skiers in a trail head box. A third of the cross-country funding comes from donations.
1999, and again in 2014, after five years of volunteer operation, Quinn said many Tupper Lakers who would be learning to downhill ski, took up cross-country. Though the school no longer has a team, the elementary school has recently been hosting a class twice a week, training students alongside Ken Kalil, an instructor from Mount Van Hovenberg in Lake Placid. Quinn said that cross-country is a very inclusive sport, being relatively inexpensive, low-impact
and easy to learn for any age. “You can go at your own pace; it’s very peaceful,” Quinn said. “Anyone that can shuffle their feet can cross-country ski.” Quinn is one of the five groomers who take care of more than five miles of trails at the golf course, heading out on a fourwheeler modified to run on tank treads at least once or twice a week. They use three different groom(Continued on Page 16)

On a mission to lend a hand
By GRIFFIN KELLY Staff Writer LAKE PLACID — Hayden Plank is 16 years old, but he’s also a world traveler and highly empathetic person who wants to help others. A member of the Adirondack Community Church youth group, he and about 20 other students will attend one of two mission trips next summer. In July, the ACC youth group will send kids on mission trips to both Wilmington, Delaware and Cambodia. The youth group is currently raising money for the trips, which will cost about $30,000. On Sunday, Dec. 10, for example, they held a benefit dinner at the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort during the Holiday Village Stroll. The Delaware trip focuses on home repairs and helping the elderly and disabled while the Cambodia trip emphasizes education and the fight against human trafficking. Kaysie Kyler, one of the youth group directors, along with her husband, Lee, said these mission trips are important to kids because it helps them understand the world beyond their hometowns. “Some say it’s the best week of their lives,” Kaysie said. “Others say they’ve grown closer to God. It helps kids realize their privilege and what they can offer to make a difference.”
Delaware For the trip to Delaware, youth group members will repair and renovate homes for the elderly and the disabled. Toward the beginning of the year, those who need help will sign up for certain renovations. “It’s kind of like a wish list of what people want done to their houses,” Lee said, “whether that means painting, light carpentry or drywall repairs.” The youth group has done other projects like this before in Rochester and Owego, New York, and Scranton, Pennsylvania. One renovation project Lee remembers is the mission trip to a Native American reservation in Navajo Mountain, Utah. There, the group installed new roofs on homes. “They were out in the desert in

It was definitely one of the more in depth trips.” Cambodia For their service in Cambodia, youth group members help young men and women practice their English-speaking skills at what Kaysie called “English Camps.” Lee said the youth group members are paired with five to seven Cambodian students and are given a training manual, but the manual is mainly disregarded. Lee said he would rather make practical conversation than follow a text. “Often times the book is useless,” he said. “I’ll just put it on the table and ask things like ‘what

type of music do you listen to?’” He said the books aren’t necessary because most of the students they work with have a decent understanding of English. “We’re not teaching them anything they don’t already know,” Lee said. “It’s mainly just practice. Not often are they face to face with fluent English speakers.” The main reason the youth group participates in the English Camps is to keep young Cambodians out of prostitution, Lee and Kaysie said. “If you can speak English in Cambodia, you’re more likely to get a better job and not fall into the human trafficking ring,” Kaysie said. Students step toward empathy By GRIFFIN KELLY Staff Writer LAKE PLACID — There’s an old expression about walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. It’s supposed to teach empathy and compassion. That’s why the Lake Placid Connections for Change has adopted a pair of sneakers similar to Converse All-Stars as the logo for its program, which seeks to create a positive environment for students in the Lake Placid middle and high schools. Students and teachers were
inspired to make their own empathy-focused program after seeing a presentation from Tom Bull, a teacher and program organizer in the Peru Central School District. Bull makes it his mission to create a positive educational environment for all students. LPMS English teacher and LPCC adviser Kristin Tice said Bull had plenty of great ideas that create a positive and inclusive environment for all students. “‘You can’t get rid of bullying,’” Tice said, quoting Bull, “‘but you can make it a better
place for all of the kids to be everyday.’” “I’ve been the kid that has been made fun of for things that you can’t necessarily change about yourself,” she said later. “You know I’ve been the kid to stick up for a kid who’s getting bullied, so I can see it from all perspectives, and that’s a big part of why I am an adviser for this group.” The LPCC is currently raising funds on Adirondackgives.com for an “I Am” mural, inspirational

tions. Vacations are not a possibility for them.” Through Grace Pantry, about 40 families a month receive a little bit of assistance. The items are portioned out, one each from several categories. Thus, a client could get free toothpaste one week and free razors, but would have to choose between shampoo and detergent. Depending on their family size, they could get one or two packages of diapers a month. “We keep track of how many families come through,” said Maggie. “Last year, 175 families were served, so when you count the individuals in the families, around 500 people. What percentage of Saranac Lake is that? That’s a lot of people.” When they started at Grace Pantry, they were putting a lot of their own money into it. That wasn’t sustainable, so they went around to local churches and asked for help. “If they were going to say ‘No,’ they’d have to say it to our faces,” said Maggie. “We did none of it by email. We went to the churches and said they could adopt the pantry for a month, and they did. The teachers’ unions are great. There are three that compete to see which can raise the most money.” It costs about $500 a month to keep Grace Pantry going. The Mortensens have also expanded what the Salvation Army can do. The annual Red Kettle campaign netted about $10,000 this Christmas season
alone, 90 percent of which goes to Saranac Lakers in need. All told, “We spent about $11,000,” Maggie said. “A couple of people made large personal donations,” Vance explained. With that money, they’re able to help people with emergency housing needs, such as making their rent payments or finding a place to stay for the night. Providing vouchers through the Salvation Army takes a lot of phone calls, said Vance. For instance, if someone needs help meeting their rent, the Mortensens will call the landlord to make sure the person lives there and that the landlord would accept the voucher. “We write around 50 vouchers a year,” said Vance. “It can take a while to get one thing done.” Maggie helps with the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad while Vance serves on the Ecumenical Council. He’s also volunteer chaplain and pastoral counselor at St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers, the Elderwood at Uihlein nursing home in Lake Placid and the Boy Scouts’ Sabattis Adventure Camp. “We know everybody who needs help,” said Maggie. Thanks to their community connections, they can also help people find help. “We’ll get a call from someone who needs help with housing, and we can tell them, ‘There are four places you can go,’” said Vance. “We definitely know a lot more people than we did in Hartwick.”

Volunteers of the year
“It is remarkable how they’ve thrown themselves into the fabric of our community,” wrote Chuck Van Anden in nominating them for the Volunteer of the Year award. “They have tirelessly given a huge number of hours to coordinate an impressive array of activities that involve countless others and deliver exceptional services to the community.” Maggie cooks twice a week for the Community Lunchbox and is currently its president. Vance serves as the ombudsman for Community Lunchbox. “If the clients have a problem or an issue, they can come to me,” said Vance. “Instead of their getting heated up about it — with each other, or with a volunteer — I’ll say, ‘Let’s talk about it,’ and usually I can help.” “He’s very calm,” said Maggie. “It’s nice to do together,” said Vance. “We have our separate things — I have more Salvation Army, Maggie has more time at the Lunchbox — but it’s good to do it together. You have to have a backup.” The Community Lunchbox, for instance, is open 52 weeks a year. Although the volunteers will sub for each other if needed, it’s still a big commitment. The Mortensens are acutely aware that the people they serve need real help. “My guys are not going to go to [other community dinners],” said Maggie. “They don’t want to hear people chatting about their vaca-

Popluhar said he can relate to some of the people who eat at the community lunches. When he was younger, he didn’t always have the best food available. “Growing up, there was unfortunately a lot of takeout for dinner in my house,” Popluhar said. “It’s good to help people. I feel we don’t do that too much these days.” Like Popluhar, Timm also has not just a desire but a sense of obligation to help others. He grew up with a father who was disabled after serving in the Armed Forces. Since then, Timm has volunteered to cater lunches for veterans and wounded soldiers. When it comes to food, Timm
said he likes to approach cooking with an almost scientific mind, identifying what chemical compounds in foods will lead to the best flavors. “I like to understand food,” Timm said. “I’m kind of a food nerd.” Though for the ACC lunches, Timm prefers cooking comfort food - stuff that easily appeals to a variety of taste buds and stays away from the major allergies. Hence the beef stew, a dish that had many people asking for seconds. “It’s a cold winter day,” Timm said. “Stew seemed like it would warm them up.” Timm and his helpers make it a point to create delicious and creative food no matter the environ-
ment or guest. The beef stew may not be on the Dancing Bears Restaurant menu, but it uses the same quality of ingredients and effort any dish at the restaurant would. “We try to do our best to serve the same standards of cooking here as we do at the restaurant,” Timm said. Timm, Popluhar and Butler were happy to help out the community and feed some hungry mouths. It’s a little bit slower than the lunch and dinner rushes at the restaurant, and it gives them time to relax, reflect on their work and realize they’re making a difference. “Feeding people always feels good,” Timm said, “but feeding those who need it feels better.”

ing machines they use: a trail plane, which brute forces snow drifts flat after heavy downfall, a roller, which is a culvert bent in a circle and used to compact snow, pushing the air out of it before the groomer, a multi-faceted contraption is run over the trails. The groomer flattens, it builds ridges and leaves two deep, parallel lines for skis to run in. All these machines were funded by a combination of taxpayer dollars and donations left by skiers in a trail head box. A third of the cross-country funding comes from donations. The public-use ski area also features a sledding hill at the far end of the first green, which groomers started carving a path for just recently, to the delight of the kids who come looking for the fastest, smoothest ride. Heading deeper into the trails, Quinn points out that they wind their way onto land owned by the
Adirondack Club and Resort, a multi-level development bringing luxury housing to the mountain and funding the re-opening of the Big Tupper Ski Area. The ACR allows the town to operate trails on its property and the two organizations are working out an agreement for the town to give the developers a certificate of insurance to cover any injuries on the course. Quinn said the cross-country trails will lead straight to the ski area’s lodge and can be accessed from the “Great Camp” lots. Quinn retired in 2009 and started grooming the next year. He said he always thought he would be riding snowmobiles in retirement but enjoys grooming and riding the town’s four-wheeler for free. He is an avid cross-country skier, often bushwhacking in the backcountry along the Bog River or in the High Peaks. He has worked with the town and the Development Authority of the North Country to work out a
master plan for the cross-country trails, obtaining funding for a topographical mapping study and planning for the addition of several new trails and off-shoots. In the past few years volunteers have cut new trails along the north end of the Golf Course Loop and the Adirondack Park Agency has flagged an area to shift a trail on the southern end from the windy green into the woods. The land the trails sit on was once owned by the Oval Wood Dish Company. It was donated to the Hull family, whose name is borne on several trails, and transferred to the town in the 1930s. Jim Frenette, now 89 years old, developed the trails when Quinn was a kid, following OWD logging roads and forging his own path. Quinn has plans to continue Frenette’s development, adding and shifting trails, winterizing the clubhouse and possibly lighting parts of the trails for night skiing in the future.
their heads up. “When you’re walking down the hall,” Tice said, “it’s literally a sign hanging from the ceiling that just says something positive or has an inspirational message for the student to read.” Tice continued, saying the posters aren’t fluff; they really do impact the students. “I’ve had a ton of kids already say it’s just something — on their worst day — it’s something that made them, you know, think about it and be like, ‘OK it’s not as bad as I think.’” Tice brought up the point that despite Lake Placid being an attractive town, not everyone has it well off financially. “When kids sometimes wear clothes that aren’t seen as “the cool” clothes, they do get made fun of, but we have a pretty good school environment,” she said. “I don’t want to say it doesn’t happen, but it’s not as frequent where kids are made fun of because of their disadvantages. There definitely is a problem. A lot of people think, ‘Lake Placid, everyone has money here,’ and that’s not the case.”
As a former student and now an educator in the public school system, Tice said bullying still exists, but it’s done differently. Where it used to be physical abuse and name calling among the lockers in school hallways, much harassment is now done behind computer and phone screens. “Every kid has a cellphone,” she said. “Facebook and Twitter and Instagram — these are the things kids use now. That’s one of the issues. A lot of times kids do it when teachers aren’t looking or when they sneak out their phones — and because they’re so small — you can hide it anywhere. That’s where a lot of the bullying is happening. It’s more online than anything.” The LPCC isn’t solely about picking people up when they’re down but also encouraging those who are helpful students to continue to be a positive aspect of the middle and high schools. If Tice or anyone else from the LPCC notices a student sticking up for others, they write them a thankyou card with some candy attached.

poster throughout the school and team building activities for all students. The fundraising campaign, which will be open until Feb. 15, has a $1,000 goal. The mural will be a platform for students to voice who they are without judgment. “I am different,” “I am weird” and “I am exciting” were just a few examples of what students could write on the mural. “It’s where all the kids in our middle school can add their own adjective describing who they are,” Tice said. “It’s OK to be outside the cookie cutter or what everyone expects you to be like. The whole point of the mural is to show that all of those things are OK.” Another aspect the funding would go toward is inspirational posters around the school, adding to the “look-up” posters already in place. The look-up posters are hung from the ceiling with positive quotes written on them, so students who might not be having the best day have a reason to keep

On a mission to lend a hand

(Continued from Page 10)
As part of their trip, the youth group visits the red light district. The analogy they like to use when explaining the red light district is “it’s like going to the edge of a cliff and seeing what happens when people fall off.” Lee said without proper schooling and encouragement many young adults will “fall off the cliff.” The brothels in Cambodia almost feel like a nightmarish eatery, according to Lee; someone stands outside with pamphlets describing how much particular sex acts cost. “It’s like going into a restaurant and looking at a menu,” he said, “only it’s sad because this time humans are on the menu.” Many of the customers Lee witnessed partaking in the brothels were westerners and Americans. Plank, who went on the group’s last trip to Cambodia, said it’s an extremely eye opening experience. And it’s not just the red light district that shocks people. When the youth group was in Siem Reap, Plank said their living situation was all right. The hotel was comfortable and the surrounding neighborhoods and religious temples were beautiful, but communities on the outskirts of town were crammed with small homes and large families, and the streets were often flooded. “If you take a second and look around,” he said, “you’ll see how scary it all is.” On the last trip, Lee saw a western woman about to walk into the red light district with her young son. The boy looked only eight years old. Lee asked the woman if she knew what neighborhood she was about to walk into. “She said they were going that way to stop by the markets and go shopping,” Lee said, “but you can’t ignore it, though. Even if you’re just there to shop, it’s right in your face.” The mission trips aren’t solely for members of the ACC. While most live in Lake Placid and attend the ACC, Lee said some of the members come from other communities in the Tri-Lakes region such as Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Keene. Pastor Derek Hanson, who started working at the ACC in September, said he appreciates that some of the youth group members don’t belong to that particular congregation in Lake Placid. “It’s good to see how our participation expands beyond the church,” he said. A former youth group member himself, Hansen once spent time in Masaya, Nicaragua building schools as well as relationships with fellow group members and locals. The Nicaraguans taught him how to be joyful, and he hopes the youth groups going to Delaware and Cambodia have a similar experience. “I hope the kids will understand what it means to serve God,” Hansen said. Lee called these mission trips a two way street. “Nothing we give them is more valuable than what they give us,” he said. He cited how the trips usually involve going to places where people don’t have the comforts most Americans do, and that puts life in a new perspective for the youth group members.

“A lot of these places don’t have good septic systems, or clean water or constant electricity,” Lee said, “meanwhile we’re back here in Price Chopper complaining about if we lose Wi-Fi. It makes you take a step back and say, ‘I can go without.’” Kids join the youth group because they actually want to give back and be empathetic human beings, according to Lee. The traveling to different places and making new friends are a great bonus, but he believes the youth community genuinely wants to help; today’s young adults aren’t the lazy, selfabsorbed millennials they’re sometimes seen as. “I believe in the modern teenager,” Lee said. “It’s not just all Xboxes and iPhones to them.” People or businesses interested in donating to the mission trips should contact Lee Kyler at 518-5233753 or 585-281-2785 (cell) or by email at adkyouth@gmail.com.
