Volunteer of the Year: Aleacia Landon Aleacia Landon smiles at the Saranac Lake Youth Center, which she manages.
(Enterprise photo — Griffin Kelly)
She’s only lived here a few years, but she’s thrown herself into various ways of serving others By GRIFFIN KELLY Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — Aleacia Landon has dedicated her life to community service and helping others. “I have a vision of the place I would like to be living,” she said. “I want it to be safe for my kids and the kids that I work with. I want it to be beautiful. We’re in an area that has lower wages and fewer opportunities. I just want to help.” Originally from Alaska, Landon has lived in Saranac Lake for only three-anda-half years and already has built up a stacked list of community services projects with which she volunteers. “The community is going to be what we make of it,” she said. “I hope to inspire others to get involved with their community in whatever way is comfortable for them. You can do one really small thing, and it can have a ripple effect. I tend to go all gung-ho and get involved with a lot of

different things that have meaning to me.” For employment, Landon is the executive director of the Saranac Lake Youth Center, a place where kids and teens hang out after school. They work on arts and crafts projects, play pool and air hockey, participate in community service programs and do homework. In the winter, the center sees about 25 kids a day, and 15 in the summer, Landon said. On a busy day, there can be 45 kids at the center. (Continued on Page 23)

Adirondack Medical Center volunteer Kathy Durkin answers phones and runs the welcome desk at the Saranac Lake hospital.
(Enterprise photo — Griffin Kelly)
Hospital volunteers lend an ‘eager ear’ By GRIFFIN KELLY Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — In a hospital, if you break a bone, you see an orthopedist. If shrimp suddenly starts giving you hives, you see an allergist. If you suffer from a heart condition, you see a cardiologist. There are all these special practices and professionals to help with any type of ailment. However, if you’re perfectly fine but have a sick loved one, it can sometimes be difficult to find comfort, compassion and just someone to talk to. That’s where the Adirondack Medical Center volunteers help out. On the surface, Kathy Durkin might direct people to where they need to go, and Karen Potts and Marcia Doty in the gift shop will help people pick out the right flowers for a sick friend, but their relationships with patients and hospital
guests go deeper than that. “I like to try and be a good listener,” Potts said. “Sometimes patients or families come in and they’re not happy, and I just listen. I think they appreciate that and feel better. I really do. It’s usually families of patients and somebody might be in the (intensive care unit) or the ER. You can tell.” Potts has volunteered in the hospital gift shop on and off for 10 years. “I don’t log my hours,” she said. “That’s not why I’m here.” Doty said people appreciate an eager ear willing to listen to problems. “It makes them feel comfortable that somebody else is sympathetic,” she said. Recently, Durkin helped a woman find her way to her doctor’s office. (Continued on Page 25)

Shania Muncil shows Sassy the cat some love at the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake on March 4.
(Enterprise photo — Katherine McDonald)
Animals appreciate attention from volunteers By KATHERINE McDONALD Special to the Enterprise SARANAC LAKE — The Tri-Lakes Humane Society is slowly building up its number of regular volunteers. Currently, it has 10 to 15, of all ages. The youngest volunteer, who is accompanied by a parent, is 6 years old. Kids who are 12 years or older are able to come in without parental supervision after school and spend time with the animals, while other adult volunteers often come in after work or during their free time. Shania Muncil is a 22-year-old North
Country native who attended St. Lawrence University and volunteered at the Potsdam Humane Society for four years during her undergraduate studies. She recently moved to Saranac Lake and drives by the Tri-Lakes Humane Society every day on her drive home from the Trudeau Institute, where she works as a research technician. It was only a couple of months after she moved here that she started volunteering again. “When I moved here, I was like, I defi(Continued on Page 17)

From left, Jules Callaghan, James Frenette Sr., John Gillis and John Quinn are given special vests by the Tupper Lake town board in April 2019 for their work grooming the town cross-country ski trails.
Adirondack Daily Enterprise/Lake Placid News • Community Resource Guide 2020
Snow stewards
By KATHERINE McDONALD Special to the Enterprise TUPPER LAKE — Back in the 1960s, Jim Frenette Sr. followed some Oval Wood Dish company logging trails around the Tupper Lake Golf Course and groomed them into cross-country ski trails. They now bear his name — the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails. He continued to groom these trails well into his 80s but eventually needed some help. He recruited his nephew John Gillis and a few others. Now Gillis — along with Eric Lanthier, Jules Callaghan, John Quinn and Scott Chartier — help groom the trails with their newest volunteer, Owen Littlefield. Gillis explained that he is “happy to help” but “would have been embarrassed to say no” to his uncle. Frenette set a great example. He had also coached many of the guys when they were younger, so they all had a special connection with him. Gillis said all the volunteers are “there because of Jim.” Gillis described the crew as “awesome, a great crew” and explained that they “get it done.” “We just show up and do it,” he said. “It’s been fun.” Now the trails are a multi-use recreation area owned by the town of Tupper Lake, which also owns the golf course. Skiers, snowshoers, fat-tire bikers and dogs all share them. Children learn to ski and race on them after school, led by Ken Kalil. And then there’s the Brew-Ski, an annual event at which skiers and snowshoers sample the wares of craft breweries from around the region. It drew 1,400 people to the trails this year — twice as many as organizers had expected. The surprise crowd left breweries running out of beer as early as 1:30 John Gillis skis on the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails in p.m., an hour-and-a-half into the event. Thousands of feet and dog paws tramped through the snow, Tupper Lake. (Enterprise photos — Aaron Cerbone) and afterward, the trails needed a good grooming. Gillis was back out that Sunday morning, getting them back in shape. ——— (Staff Writer Aaron Cerbone contributed to this report.)

Shania Muncil pets 19-year-old cat Amy at the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake on March 4.
Animals appreciate attention
(Continued from Page 8) nitely have to volunteer somewhere,” Muncil said. She now volunteers every Wednesday, stopping in on her way home for 30 to 45 minutes. She explained how she likes to spend time with all of the cats; “I just kind of sit. Sometimes I bring a book. Sometimes I read or just talk aloud to them.” She specifically does this with the shy cats in hopes of acclimating them more to people. With the notso-shy cats she also plays with them. “It’s great, I love it so much.” she said. Describing the cats, she said “They all have so many personalities.” She went on to Smudge, a little, blind, black cat who recently was adopted. Muncil was glad when she came in one week to hear that Smudge got a home. “It’s nice to just come in every week and be like, ‘Oh, so-and-so got adopted.’” Muncil even adopted her own cat from the shelter shortly after she began volunteering. She took home 12-year-old Jeter in mid-January. “I was really happy to adopt an older cat,” she said “I’ve always kind of wanted to do that. I mean they have a wonderful life here, but (it’s) better than them living out their last years in a shelter.” It’s hard for the older animals to get adopted simply due to the short amount of time that families

would get to spend with them. Some cats, like 19year-old Amy and 10 to 12-year-old Sassy, have been in and out of the shelter their entire lives. Amy has been with the Tri-Lakes Humane Society longer than most of the staff. She is a bit of an escape artist, so she would always end up back at the shelter. Eventually, they decided to make her their “mascot,” often bringing her to schools with them. Muncil is happy to see kids learning about shelters and animals. “That’s another thing I’ve noticed about here,” she said. “I’ve seen parents or grandparents come in with their younger kids and I think that’s really nice to do. I don’t see it often enough, and I’d like to see more of it. It’s such a nice thing for them to learn what a shelter is about but also how to act around animals.” Muncil has only been volunteering here for a couple of months, but she has already bonded with the animals. She feels volunteering is therapeutic for her. “I love having this because it gives me something extra in my life,” she said. “It means more than just work and home.” For more information on volunteering for the TriLakes Humane Society, go to trilakeshumanesociety.org or email cms@trilakeshumanesociety.org.

Volunteer of the Year Aleacia Landon (Continued from Page 4)
“We know that there is a definite need,” Landon said. “I have many kids who identify in that community, but they don’t always come to the meetings. Sometimes we don’t have anybody who shows up. There are other times where they’re all allies, which is totally fine because you are still able to answer their questions and teach them how to be the best support that they can be for their friends or family members.” She also helps out at the election night dinners at the First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake. “I don’t mind doing dishes,” she said. How does she do it all? “I’ve got my family. I’ve got my work. I’ve got my volunteerism. There’s really no way that you can balance it,” she said. “Everybody is always trying to find balance, and I don’t think that is actually achievable. You just try and do the best you can. Things slip. Sometimes I’m slower to respond to emails on certain things.” When she’s not working or volunteering, Landon said she’s a homebody. “I derive a significant amount of satisfaction, absolutely, from what I do for others,” she said. “Giving to others fills my bucket, but it can’t all be volunteer work. I’ve got to have my me-time. So much of my life, and what people see is the outreach that I do, but I am actually an introvert. I love being home with my dog, my family and reading a book and relaxing.” Landon doesn’t exist in a vacuum. She said she sees people every day who are doing the same type of work she does with the same amount of effort. “I’ve never lived in a place like Saranac Lake, where there are so many people trying to do good works for the betterment of all,” she said.

“It’s just a great space for the kids,” she said. Since November 2016, Landon has delivered the food to the food pantry at the Saranac Lake Adult Center on Tuesdays. Avana Forsyth, who also helps at the food pantry, said, “She comes in with a smile and always leaves with one as well. She believes strongly in helping our community in any way that she can.” She’s a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Saranac Lake Women’s Civic Chamber and the Aktion Club, which is an activity group for adults with developmental disabilities. “My adult son has autism, so it’s a way for him to get out and get involved,” Landon said. She is the secretary of the Saranac Lake Fifth Quarter Club, which is the booster club for the high school football team, and serves as the director for the Olga Memorial Footrace, which raises money for the youth center and the Saranac Lake Rotary Club. “A lot of the things I’m involved with are centered around children, specifically teens,” she said. “I was a middle school track coach for many years. I love working with this age group. Whatever I can do to support them, I’m drawn to that.” Landon is a member of the Franklin County Suicide Prevention Coalition, and she runs the monthly Suicide Survivor Loss Support Group. “My brother died from suicide back in 2002, so it’s something that’s near and dear to my heart,” she said. “When I found out that there was a coalition, I definitely wanted to be involved.” She and Kelly Metzger established the local Teen LGBTQ Support Group.

Hospital volunteers

“She turned and said, ‘I really appreciate that smile when I came in that door,’” Durkin said. “I thought that was sweet.” As a joke, a former volunteer bought a Peanutsstyle sign that says, “Psychiatric Help, 5 cents,” to hang over Adirondack Health Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Rutledge’s office door. “That’s really what goes on all day long, particularly with the volunteers,” she said. Doty used to work full-time at AMC as a secretary in the surgical unit. She had to retire because her husband got sick, but she couldn’t just leave everything behind. “I worked here for so many years, so volunteering is kind of like coming home,” she said. “I actually didn’t want to retire. I think I would still be up there on surgical.” Doty said she volunteers because the work keeps her busy at the age of 82. “It’s to keep myself from becoming senile,” she said. “I still love being with people. I’m able to do it, so hopefully, I’ll do it until I’m not able. It’s great to get out and see people and be part of something.”

Durkin moved to Malone three years ago, so once a week she drives an hour south to volunteer at the front desk. “I like that they really appreciate their volunteers here,” she said. “I don’t think every hospital does that. I’d rather volunteer here than anywhere else. It gives you self-satisfaction.” She started volunteering in 2013, a year after she suffered a stroke. “I was having trouble walking and had to use a cane,” she said. “But then I noticed that down all the hallways are little railings you can grab onto. I swear that’s why I’m not using a cane anymore. I was busy, and I wanted to walk faster. I haven’t used a cane since 2014, and I don’t use the railings, either.” Currently, Adirondack Health has 35 volunteers. Most get involved through word of mouth, Rutledge said. “Our volunteers talk us up pretty well because they enjoy being here,” she said. “A lot of people are intimidated by coming into the hospital. Whether they’ve had a bad experience or a good experience here, I think some people shy away from it. I think it takes a special kind of person to volunteer here.”
